Riders will have the option to stay at the dorms of the colleges for a nominal upgrade fee per night, stay at hotels (at their own expense) or camp (free). You will also reserve your spot on a bus to the start in Cincinnati and/or from the finish in Cleveland if needed. Mission Moment: “Why you volunteer”—Volunteer Spotlights 1) How many years have you been involved with POHR?

This will be my 5th year volunteering in the SAG program and my husband’s 6th year riding

2) Tell us more about how you have been involved and volunteered with the Pan Ohio Hope Ride?

The 1st year my husband rode, I grabbed my kids & my parents and we followed the ride down to Cincinnati visiting with the riders at the finish line at each college. We had so much fun, I thought I would officially volunteer the following year! The next 3 years, I hit the roads with my POHR Co-Pilot, Shannon Hammons, in the giant TeamMCPc Family Charities truck and supported all the cyclists throughout the route as a SAG Driver. Sometime during that time I became honorary Team Mom for TeamMCPc—I help build fundraisers & socials, recruit riders and support training rides. After our beloved SAG Captain, Steve Levine passed away, I was honored to be asked to join the HAM/ SAG Leadership team to lead the non-radio SAGs in conjunction with HAM/SAG Co-Leads, John Padley & Jason Boone, for the 2017 event. This year, I am again honored to be on the HAM/SAG Leadership team to lead the non-radio SAGs & participate in multiple POHR committees throughout the year. I cannot wait to see everyone in July!

3) Why do you volunteer for the Pan Ohio Hope Ride and the American Cancer Society?

I hate cancer, I hate how it affects everyone around it and I want to do everything in my power to eradicate the disease and its power from taking any more birthdays away.

4) Where are you from?

Born and raised in Illinois, my husband and I moved our family to the Cleveland area 7 years ago.

5) Why should someone volunteer or register as a virtual participant for POHR?

Why not?! The friendships you make are lifelong. Who doesn’t love seeing the smiles of everyone you interact with whether you are grabbing their luggage, giving them some delicious M&Ms at a water stop or cheering the cyclists on with cow bells as they cross the finish line after a day’s long ride. The difference you make is enormous on the riders, on other volunteers, on the residents of any Hope Lodge, the survivors and on yourself! So, no matter how you get involved, just get involved. YOUR action is what helps make our mission successful.

6) What is your favorite thing about or a past memory of POHR?

I have so many great memories that I could fill this entire newsletter with happiness so I’ll keep it simple – I come back for those amazing veggie chips!!!

1) How many years have you been involved with POHR?

2018 will be our 10th Pan Ohio!

2) Tell us more about how you have been involved and volunteered with the Pan Ohio Hope Ride?

We started as volunteers with YPACS at a water stop in 2009. We brought along our camera on a whim. While taking pictures we met the PR Director for the ACS and he asked if he could get copies of some of our shots. One ended up being used as a press release in the Cincinnati Enquirer. We were then invited to take pictures at the finish line that next year and continued doing so until 2015. After 2015 we became four-day volunteers—and the rest is history.

3) Why do you volunteer for the Pan Ohio Hope Ride and the American Cancer Society?

Drew: It’s the people involved that keeps us going

Carol: I want a future where Cancer is no longer and of course the people (staff, riders and volunteers)

4) Where are you from?

Maineville, OH (6 miles from the Morrow lunch stop)!

5) Why should someone volunteer or register as a virtual participant for POHR?

It’s an experience like none other and is our favorite event.

6) What is your favorite thing about or a past memory of POHR?

Again, It’s the people. We have new friends from across Ohio, the U.S. and Canada! Riders always have a smile when they see the photographers.

5 February 2018

1) How many years have you been involved with POHR?

This will be my 4th year riding! The first year I rode it with my dad and it was just the two of us. We now have about 17 riders on our team! It is awesome to see how our team has grown.

2) Why do you ride the Pan Ohio Hope Ride?

The main reason why I have always rode is to fight for those battling cancer. As the years have gone on more people I know have been affected by cancer. This just gives me more determination as I am riding over 4 days. The main person I am riding for this year and it has been in the past is "The Suz." Seeing how strong she is and how she keeps fighting shows me that I can overcome over any obstacle that gets thrown my way during the ride a.k.a. the hills. I also ride because it all started out with my dad and I. This has strengthened our relationship and I wouldn't be riding for my 4th year without him.

3) Where are you from?

Cincinnati, OH—Team: We Build Champions

4) Tell is about your bike and your favorite piece of gear to use on the POHR:

Oh I have come a far way to get the bike I have now! The first year I had a hybrid bike and now I ride a road bike. It is nothing fancy, but it is a much better ride!

My gloves! After my first year with not having a pair the first two days, I learned my lesson!

5) What advice do you have for new POHR riders?

This ride will truly change your life! You will realize how strong you are. Just believe in yourself and remember why you are riding. When you want to give up, think about why you signed up. Think about those you are fighting for! Also....buy Chamois Butter! This is something I quickly learned after my first year.

6) What is your favorite thing about the POHR or a past memory?

POHR has brought many good memories! My favorite thing is that I am able to do this with my family. Last year, my mom

joined us for 2 days and I am so thankful that I get to spend this time with them. A memory that sticks out to me is on my first year crossing that finish line in Cincinnati! The feeling of accomplishment that I felt and seeing my family as I crossed the line. There is no way to hold back the tears because you can finally say "I did it!" I have made lots of good memories during the ride and I love the time spent with my team! We truly get to bond together and just lift each other up.
