Missionary Appeal the Weekend of August 6th and 7th for the Diocese of Neyyattinkara, Kerala, India The Diocese of Neyyattinkara, Kerala, India was established in 1996. It is a diocese in which there are many conversions to Catholic Christianity from other religions. Most of the 150,000 Catholics are either seasonal farm workers or marginal farmers with less than ½ acre of land. These farmers have no other sources of income. Many of them have less than ¼ of an acre to farm. This is mainly due to the population growth in the last 50 years and the property laws which have forced families to divide land among their children. Most parents do not have the ability to support themselves or educate their children---or support their Church. This is the great challenge for the diocese of Neyyattinkara. The diocese has all the growing pains of a new diocese over and above the poverty of the people and the lack of resources within the diocese. The main focus now is on the children. The weekend of August 6th—7th at St. Jean Vianney. Fr. Joy Antony , who represents this diocese, will ask your support in prayer and in finances for this missionary ministry. The gift you give will be during the second collection and will go to help children from poor families receive an education. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our mission as the Body of Christ in the parish of St. Jean Vianney is to model the love of Jesus by discerning and doing God’s will, consciously Sharing the Word and Eucharist at worship, educating in faith all ages, evangelizing our parishioners for Christ’s mission, and serving justly God’s people, our sisters and brothers within our parish boundaries, our larger Baton Rouge community, and into the world.

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, This weekend is one of our parish blood drives. I hope you can help and give blood. Doing so helps others in the parish who may need blood at crises times be able to secure the supply needed. I am grateful to the Social Responsibility Committee and Commission for coordinating this yearly project. This past Friday, our contribution to the Diocesan 50th Anniversary Time Capsule was sealed into the capsule at the Catholic Life Center. The Capsule is to be opened 50 years from now. I imagine the folks then will wonder about us and what we were up to as a Church during these times. We supplied pictures and stories about our parish’s past 35 years of existence. Hello to the future and thanks for the past. The new road-way and sidewalk construction is basically complete. We did this work in anticipation of the road construction on South Harrell’s Ferry which will create a wider front entrance/exit yet to be done. The new paver- plaza has the large planters with built-in watering system so that the greenery in the planters can survive. These planters also signal that no parking is to be done on or near the walkway. I want to encourage the men of the parish to consider making a retreat this year, the weekend of August 20-21. Christ Renews His Parish is a close to home spiritually enriching day and a half which brings new insight into the spirituality of men at home and in the world. Go to www.stjeanvianney.org for information, registration. Click on the Christ Renews His Parish button. I am leaving this weekend for vacation. While I am away if you have any pastoral needs, please contact the parish office and one of the Parish Staff will assist you. I will pray for you while I am away; please pray for me too. Love,

program, we will send you a brochure providing information that details the impor-tance of this aspect of spiritual stewardship. We invite you to indicate your ministry preferences, a prayerful response regarding your involvement in the life of our local Parish. Called by God and “born in the spirit of faith”—like the apostles and two millennia of the faithful—you preserve the legacy of faithful Catholics who preceded you and provide for all those who will follow, ministering to their hurts and meeting their needs.

Over the last few weeks we have been writing about both what changes are coming with the new translation of the Roman Missal, as well as, what will remain the

same. The decade of the 1960’s brought Catholics many changes in how we worship by opening up the liturgical experience with the acceptance of the liturgy being celebrated in the mother tongue of the community. In the early Christian Church much of what was done in liturgy was handed down orally from one generation to the next. Eventually scribes or writers were charged with the task of collecting the oral prayers from Mass into a written book of sacraments. Other books were written as well: Lectionaries that contained the Scripture readings, a book of Gospels called the Evangeliary, and books of chants and antiphons. Finally, all of these writings were compiled into a single volume called the Complete Missal or the Roman Missal. With the invention of the printing press in 1470, this volume was standardized and became published universally for the Church to use. Over the next five hundred years, this Complete Roman Missal inspired our worship. Following the Second Vatican Council in 1962, the Complete Roman Missal was divided into two parts; the Lectionary, from which the lectors proclaim the readings and the Sacramentary, the red book of prayers used by the priest during the liturgy. The first English translation of the Roman Missal was created in 1969 and was concerned more with the spirit of the text rather than the literal translation. Considering the cultural climate of the sixties and early seventies, this is a prime example of the Church’s being in touch with the world around it. The English translation of the Roman Missal was again revised in 1975. However, in 2001 the Church issued a document concerned with the method and process for translation of liturgical texts into the vernacular languages. As a result of this deeper understanding of the rich value of the Latin Text, the commission in charge of this endeavor spent the next ten years re-evaluating our English translation to determine if changes in the translations needed to be made. On April 30, 2010 the need for changes was announced and these changes will be implemented in every Catholic Church world wide on November 27, 2011… the first Sunday of Advent---very fittingly at the start of a new Liturgical year.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY NEWS

“JustFaith” “Love your neighbor as yourself” is the great commandment. But, in my busy life, who really is my neighbor and what does my faith say I should do for my neighbor? JustFaith is an intensive thirty-week program that helps to answer these questions through reflection, study, prayer and community. For information, please join us at an information gathering on August 25th at 6:30 p.m. in the parish office, or contact Pat Callies, 362.2816, or Cindy Tracy, 752.6232; as well as, www.justfaith.org. Our Lady of the Lake Hospital Summer Blood Drive this Sunday The summer months are especially long when the blood supply within our community is short. The lives of many of our parishioners have been touched through the varied services O.L.O.L. provides, including opportunities for employment, medical care, education and support. We are happy to link with O.L.O.L. in this summer appeal for donors from SJV. Please support this drive by donating blood this Sunday, July 24th in Fr. Engels Hall, any time between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. If you are unable to donate, we ask for your prayers for a successful drive.

ALBERTSON’S COMMUNITY PARTNERS How can shopping for all of your summer needs – cookouts, celebrations, pool parties, picnics – help our Social Responsibility Ministries? If you are an Albertson’s store shopper, please use or obtain our Community Partner key tag to scan when you shop. Our ministry will earn cash rewards based on our supporters’ sales. We can earn 1% of the sale each time our Community Partners barcode is scanned with a grocery purchase. The permanent key tag may be obtained from the parish office, or my emailing Lori at [email protected]. Or, you may cut out the temporary key tag below and scan it when you shop. It just takes one person to help make a difference. You can help support our ministries just by doing what you are already doing – shopping.
