LAGNIAPPE Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

July 5, 2015

St. Jean Vianney Youth Group

Recently members of the SJV Youth Group, along with myself, attended Blessings on the Bayou at St. Philomena Church in Labadieville. Over a 5 day span, we had many opportunities to interact with the community. There was time set aside to pray and visit nursing homes and homebound parishioners. We also did service projects on houses, such as scraping, painting and landscaping. Each night we reflected on our day with an option to receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. We all enjoyed ourselves, including team building exercises, general fun and goofiness as well. We thank Fr. Michael Alello for inviting us to attend, and we encourage all of you to pet his hair next time you see him! Just leave my name out of it. Carlos

Dear Friends, A great deal is being said and written about the Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the question of legal marriage equality. The Church finds itself apparently marginalized again on a moral issue and an issue that deeply impacts what is expected from marriage and the value of a male and female in creating a family. This does not diminish the Church’s role in presenting a moral compass or being faithful to the Gospel. Despite the Church’s own sinfulness, the witness to faith remains a gift the Church offers to society. This witness may well be a minority opinion at this time in history, but that does not mean that way of understanding and practicing marriage is ill founded or bigoted as some have claimed. The quarrel is not so much with persons, but with what the institution of marriage is. similar to “when does life begin?” While a Solomon-wise answer is a hoped for expectation of society from its courts, the ultimate answer to what is marriage is not a matter of opinion based on legalities but rather on a moral code, a way of life, rooted in something that has been known from the beginning of human relationships. The public Law does not make a society informed or moral. That kind of moral society is formed by people living a consciously moral life, which has as its touchstones the Scriptures, the lived tradition of the best of our ancestors, the lived Tradition of our Church. Marriage was not created by the law. However, when we live in a pluralistic society we can expect to be ignored or rejected. Remaining the loyal opposition is not a bad place to be. As we enter into July, we can give thanks for many daily gifts. Don’t forget your prayer during the summer. Men, please consider being on the next Christ Renews His Parish Men’s Retreat on campus the weekend of August 29-30. You will not regret being a part of this retreat. Have a blessed holiday weekend. Love,

ADORATION “NOT JUST ANOTHER MEETING”

All are invited on Tuesdays to continue their worship and love of God at adoration. It is a visit, not a meeting. A visit of ‘love to love’. Bring whatever is in your heart and soul and leave it at the feet of the Lord for HE will be at yours. “Adoration for the Blessed Sacrament is the best time you will spend on earth”. -Mother Theresa Join us every Tuesday evening at 7:00pm for Eucharistic Adoration. Taking special time with our Lord is a great way to grow closer to Him.
