JULY 2020
MARKET LIFE WITH
MARGARET Margaret Lindsay Francis… Where do I
start ? Certainly not finished! Margaret
wrote out her first invoice for the
Maitland Markets in August 2006 and
has hardly taken a break since.
A little background on the Markets of
which some people may not be
aware. The council shed that houses
the Markets had it’s interior designed
and developed by The Maitland Auto
Preservation Society (MAPS) between
1990 -2000. This has been the
streetscape backdrop for the
Maitland Markets from August 2006 up
until today.
Throughout that time Margaret has
kept up to date with the
bookkeeping, made sure the stock
and craft supplies were full, kept tabs
on the active creative displays, quality
of cooking and produce plus displays
of artwork to name but a few.
Filming of Postcards with Keith Conlon
helped to put Maitland Markets on the
Tourist Map when the uniqueness of
the shed interior was recognised.
Monies raised by the Maitland Markets has been used to assist Maitland Progress
projects including bedroom furnishings for the Clydesdale Cottage Bed &
Breakfast. Also for charities including Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea and
local groups like Maitland Music and Arts Club and supplying home made
biscuits and packaging.
Margaret opened the Maitland Markets for special groups and bus loads of
people for morning tea. She used to make real soup, NOT from packet stock, in
winter until too many were bringing their thermoses to take more home.
Maitland and District Progress Association Inc Markets and Community Engagement Coordinator

the Maitland Markets. Working with the Administrations and Promotions, duties include but are not limited to: developing an implementing a plan with budgets, for the use and activities in the
Maitland Markets that meets the M&DPA objectives. Working with volunteers sourcing sellers, grants and developing new activities
at the Markets. Sound organisational and people management skills are essential. Computer literate
and a community focus and interest in the local region are required. Attendance at monthly Progress evening meeting is required.
E-mail your application to: [email protected] before 4pm Friday 28th August 2020.
More information can be requested by e-mail.
Margaret showed she was flexible and able to adapt when musicians dropped in
randomly to entertain and enthral. Guitarists, keyboardists and Classical
musicians were all given their time to shine. Margaret made room for local school
students to operate a coffee machine and sell homemade muffins as part of
their curriculum.
Margaret, a Justice of the Peace since 1964, has quietly provided her services at
the Markets and also from home to the wider Maitland Community.
Margaret has shared that throughout her 14 years of volunteering her time at the
Markets and she has worked with a good group of people. She has immensely
enjoyed their company and meeting new people with the flow of tourists through
the Markets doors. She also added her personal touch to the Markets with her
own knitted and crocheted items along with plenty of baked goods, jams &
pickles.
We would like to take this opportunity to Thank You Margaret for everything you
have brought to our wonderful community.
Margaret has been at the helm of the Maitland Markets for many years. Her
knowledge of the town and surrounding districts that she could give to the
travellers and public was priceless. Margaret’s organisation skills are second to
none. We had many positive comments at the Market regarding the beautiful
quilts, craft and produce. The Maitland Markets is also a meeting place for locals
with morning tea and coffee and homemade cakes and biscuits.
All the Volunteers would like to thank Margaret for all the fun we have had and
wish her well in her retirement. We all can’t wait for the Maitland Markets to
re-open.

NEWS FROM THE MAITLAND & DISTRICT PROGRESS ASSOCIATION
It seems slightly surreal to think that it has now been three months since we
first were told to social distance, cough into our elbows, wash our hands for 20
seconds and to stay at home. While we have been lucky in South Australia,
we have seen how quickly things can change if we don’t continue to take
care. However we don’t want to confuse social distancing with social
isolation; we still need to keep an eye out for friends and neighbours as many
still feel anxious. Just asking someone how they are, even a friendly wave,
can help make someone feel valued.
As the rules help take us to a new normal, many of Progress activities are
returning. The Men’s Shed is back in action, as are several of the community
groups that use the meeting room at the information centre. One important
activity of Progress that will not open immediately is the Maitland Markets.
During the Covid closure, many of our volunteers decided they enjoyed the
freedom from the weekly commitment to the Market and as you will have
seen from the article in the cover Margaret Francis, the backbone of the
Maitland Markets, has resigned due to poor health. I would like to express my
gratitude to Margaret and her loyal volunteers who have built-up the Markets
to a location which is valued by many in the community as well as tourists.
Are you looking for a new challenge since Covid?
Margaret has left big shoes to fill. With guidance from the Market volunteers
Progress has decided that it needs to establish a part-time, paid role ‘The
Markets and Community Engagement Coordinator’ – please see advert on
previous page.
Our AGM will be held in August and I would love to see some new faces
come and join Progress. If you are passionate about making Maitland a
great place to live, work and visit then why not come and join M&DPA
because that is our objective as well.
Stay Safe

A HEART-FELT THANK YOU
"We would like to thank everyone who has looked after Trev during his (multiple)
hospital stays. The marvellous ambulance volunteers and their team leader, who
came to assist during his first heart attack. The wonderful nursing staff at Maitland
Hospital. Dr Bromley who organised the helicopter transfer and the prompt
treatment at the RAH and who stayed with Trev until the air ambulance people
arrived. Paul Whittaker, Maitland hospital for his patience and care, coming out
to our home with the follow-up care and his clear explanation of Trev's heart
condition. Dr Duah's care and treatment during Trev's subsequent hospital stays.
We also extend our thanks and praise to the specialists, doctors and nurses at the
RAH, who literally saved Trev's life twice in one night.
To all the friends who have kept us in their prayers, friends who have kept in touch
and passed on their good wishes and offered gifts of food. Our family and my
distant old friends who have kept in touch, with many words of comfort via the
internet, we say thank you. Words alone cannot express our gratitude to all. You
have all been absolutely wonderful - Thankyou"

A MESSAGE FROM PASTOR ANN PHILLIPS
Maitland Uniting Church will open for worship from Sunday 9
August. We will be subject to the government restrictions and
will be practicing social distancing and other guidelines
required at that time. Initially we will not share in morning tea
and will closely monitor the health guidelines. Opening is
subject to the covid-19 situation continuing to improve as it
has recently in South Australia.
You may wonder why we are waiting so long, when other
churches are opening earlier? Maitland Uniting Church
consists of members who are mostly in the vulnerable section
of society. We value the welfare of our community and have decided it is best for us to
proceed with caution when it comes to opening. We have decided to take some extra
time to examine our practices and not rush back. Church itself has not closed or
stopped. Although our building has been closed we have continued to worship at
home in a variety of ways and have kept in contact with each other and the
community during this time of isolation. Worship at home resources are available to all
(please contact Pastor Ann via phone or email) and these will continue for the
foreseeable future. We have realized that there are some who wish to worship but are
unable to get to church and this may be felt even more during the coming months; so
for that reason we will continue to supply a worship at home resource and connection
to our church.
The church will be available for hire after the 9 August. If you are interested in using the
facilities please contact Pastor Ann or the church leaders in the first instance.
2020 has been a very different year, one that will go down in history and be
remembered into the future. What have you learnt during this time? Many of us have
had more time to think, more time to spend with families. For some there have been less
demands on our time. I want to acknowledge and thank those who have worked
harder than ever before, who have kept things going while others have been isolated.
As we begin to come out of isolation things will be different; there will be a new set of
social guidelines. Some will be excited to meet with friends, but others will be fearful. We
are all different and cope with things in different ways. I encourage us all to be gentle
with each other as we enter into a new normal.
Grace and Peace
Ann Phillips
