First Presbyterian Church helped make dreams come true!

A group of people in Grand Forks, North Dakota have made a BIG and LONG LASTING impact on children thousands of miles across the Atlantic. In the mid 1990’s, Jane Kurtz was living in Grand Forks. She had grown up in rural Ethiopia, and as a children’s book author, she wanted to help increase literacy for the children living in the country of her childhood. Jane and San Francisco Children’s librarian, Johannes Gebregeorgis, began conversations about sending books to Ethiopia. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, Jane proposed that the church support this effort. Church members stepped up to write the bylaws for Ethiopia Books for Children and Education Foundation (aka Ethiopia Reads) and incorporated it as a nonprofit. They volunteered to raise money with a read-a-thon, books sales, donations, and several matching grants from the Presbytery of Northern Plains. This money was used to print 10,000 copies of the first book for children in Amharic and English entitled Silly Mammo by Yohannes Gebregeorgis. (This book and others are available on www.EthiopiaReads.org.) Children’s books were collected, and the National Presbyterian Women awarded the church a $10,000 grant to help ship the books to Ethiopia. After several years of hard work, on April 7, 2003, the Shola Children’s Library in Addis Ababa opened with Jane in attendance! It was the first ever free library for children in Ethiopia. This was possible due to the compassion and determination of a small group of people in Grand Forks, North Dakota - population 50,000 - at First Presbyterian Church.. Once the church’s leadership council adopted the project, they never stopped supporting Ethiopia Reads’ literacy mission. The seeds they planted grew to include other Grand Forks churches, schools, and organizations. Grand Forks Friends of Ethiopia Reads

Violante, Tida. “A Small Group of People in Grand Forks, ND, made a huge impact across the World.” https://www.ethiopiareads.org/2020/05/19/a-small-group-of-people-in-grand-forks-nd-made-a-huge-impact-across-the-world/. May 2020 Newsletter. Ethiopia Reads.

have “planted” three school libraries, supported professional training of local educators and purchased local language books. These ”Friends of Ethiopia Reads” in Grand Forks, ND (population ~50,000) people have been the most consistent Ethiopia Reads supporters from any part of the US. Over $150,000 has been raised, through their fundraising efforts. This unwavering commitment to the cause of building a reading culture for Ethiopia’s more than 50 million children and young people has been critical to Ethiopia Reads ability to focus on important issues – professional development for Ethiopian librarians who introduce books and reading to children. Today, nearly 20 years later, we may have a chance to help make sure that all of Ethiopia's 35,000 primary schools will have a library and trained librarians. Thank you, First Presbyterian Church, for planting the seeds that have helped thousands of children become readers and bloom! Will you join us in bringing about change? Create your own local Friends of Ethiopia Reads group and help increase children’s literacy! We all have the power to make a difference in this world. Sincerely, Malcolm Clark

What do you love the most about First Pres? We love the members of First Pres. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. We also love Pastor Homan’s sermons and the music.
