OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
WATERMELON CREATIONS
ZERO EDGE SPAS
The Summer Issue
SUMMERTIME IS A MAGICAL SEASON. The kids are out of school, the sunshine seems never-ending, and there’s no shortage of adventures that await. For many, summer evokes fond memories of childhood—sleepaway camp, family vacations, and swimming until your fingers are shriveled like prunes. I know for our family, most
of summer is spent in the pool!
Of course, summer and sunshine also go hand-in-hand with everyone’s favorite sum-mer fruit—watermelon. Though it’s wonderful to eat simply sliced up, there are also so many creative recipes that incorporate watermelon. On page 34, Denise McCreery shares three that are sure to become staples in your summer rotation (and mine!). In fact, I’m making her Thai Shrimp & Watermelon Salad at a pool party I’m hosting this month!
Of course, while I do have a pool, I don’t have a spa. After reading the article on page 22 though, I want one! We showcase a few of California Pools & Landscape’s
drool-worthy zero edge spa creations—and boy, are they gorgeous!
Although it’s tempting to stay in air-conditioning or my pool all summer, Chandler Parks & Recreation reminds us that even though it’s hot out, summer is still the perfect time to get outdoors and take advantage of everything our city has to offer. Celebrate Park and Recreation Month this month with Chandler Parks & Recreation’s many outdoor activity
ideas, programs and events (page 42), and really make the most of your summer.
As for me, I’m planning to do it all—eat watermelon, relax in my pool, take in a concert at Gila River Hotels & Casino, spend time with my family, and just enjoy the season.
Have a wonderful month!
Yours,

Crews began work in mid-May on the 125,000 square-foot center, which holds national retailers like Zia Records and Compass Bank, to name a few. The renovations include new stone design work, awnings, a repaved parking lot, updated landscap-ing and new painting.
The renovations are expected to take 90 days.
DONATIONS AND SPONSORS NEEDED FOR ANNUAL OPERATION BACK TO SCHOOL
The City of Chandler Diversity Office, along with For Our City-Chandler and a volunteer com-mittee, is gearing up for another Operation Back to School event on Sat., July 20, at Chandler High School, 350 N. Arizona Ave. Operation Back to School (OBTS) is a one-day event where kids receive a free, brand-new backpack filled with school supplies to ensure Chandler students are ready with the supplies they need for the first day of school. Haircuts, uniforms, socks, shoes and underwear also are a few of the freebies students may receive during the event. There are several ways to get involved, including corporate sponsor-ships, individual donations, donating supplies, vol-unteering to assist with inventory or day-of-event assistance, donating a new backpack filled with supplies or hosting a backpack drive, and hairstyl-ists are needed to cut hair at the event.
Nearly 2,200 families and students from 43 (of the 47) Chandler Unified schools attended last year, and more are expected to attend this com-ing year. To view a complete list of sponsorship opportunities, school supplies needed or volunteer opportunities, visit bit.ly/2019OBTSChandler.

“I want my companies to bless our local com-munity by providing a great place to connect and practical training to the business community for both business and personal growth,” explains Chuck Fazio.
Chuck (along with his wife, Angela) owns four Chandler-based businesses: Revelation Real Estate, the Chandler Real Estate Training Center, The Forum Coworking + Events and The Forum Business School.

THE RISE IN POPULARITY OF THESE STUNNING BACKYARD ELEMENTS
Zero Edge Spas
ARTICLE MICHELLE GUERRERO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
Chandler Lifestyle |22 July 2019
CONTINUED >
“This is a great example of an overall backyard,” says Jeremy. “You can tell on that particular project they don’t have water features. The spa is the focal piece and the water feature.”
This is truly the quintessential zero edge spa, with all glass tile making the light inside visible. The home itself has many windows, which seamlessly merges it with the outdoors.
The outdoor kitchen and seating area create additional living areas for the family.
JEREMY SMITH, THE OWNER OF CALIFORNIA POOLS & LANDSCAPE, HAS SEEN A RISING POPULARITY OF ZERO EDGE SPAS. They differ from the traditional variety for several rea-sons, but perhaps most notable is the aesthetics. Water floats over its edges into a hidden trough, giving the illusion of a vanishing edge. They can also be built above ground, creating a waterfall feature as water flows into the channel below.
“It looks really great with high-powered LED lights going around the whole spa. It’s spectacular,” Jeremy says. “We’re kind of geeks when it comes to spas. People can use them year-round and we like to trick them out and make them different.”
A positive to zero edge spas is the freedom of design. They don’t have to sit right on the pool, therefore creating a destination area elsewhere. Also, the pool’s equipment can be used for the spa, elim-inating the need for a separate system.
“I can take that water in the trough and circulate it back into the pool,” Jeremy explains. “Some people like to separate the spa from the pool, and the zero edge concept makes that more economical.”
Zero edge spas are often used as a decorative feature, as well as a place to relax. According to Jeremy, users are more comfortable because their arms are always submerged with the water level up to the edge and there’s no deck hitting them at the back of the head.
California Pools (CalPool.com) has created outdoor living spaces for 31 years and is fully licensed to build backyard spaces from out-door kitchens to bathhouses.
23 | Chandler Lifestyle July 2019
They used small glass tiles around the spa and placed them verti-cally to create a smoother, rounded look. This spa doubles as a water feature, adding ambiance with the sound of the water as it flows over the edge, hitting the trough below.
This spa is framed with the fire pods that fill with water, and after dark, it’s lit by LED lights, bathing the water in light all the way up to the edge.
“Spas make yards aesthetically pleasing and add function,” Jeremy says.
ZERO EDGE SPAS (CONTINUED)
Chandler Lifestyle |24 July 2019
The customer who built this spa wanted an area where the family could enjoy time together and have movie nights from the com-fort of the water.
The swim-up bar is accessible from both locations and there are stools on the other side for non-swimmers, as well.
This was a remodel. California Pools & Landscape did some work to the pool, added new decking, fountains, a BBQ, and the zero edge spa.
Instead of tile, this spa is surrounded by concrete cladding. It sounds like rain when the water trickles down the sides and into the basin below.

ARTICLE GEORGANN YARAPHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
IT ALL STARTED WITH A RARE DATE NIGHT AT A COCKTAIL BAR. Lauren and John Maggio were in the throes of the early years with their four children and had the opportunity to be spelled by a sitter for the evening.
They each ordered the same cocktail that was well-balanced and hit all the perfect notes that a per-fected libation aims to reach. Because this night out was a luxury that would not be repeated regularly, they asked their bartender to share his recipe. He was happy to do so, down to the measurements of each spirit and accou-trement so they could recreate this experience at home.
And they were able to do just that—trips to three dif-ferent liquor stores and $103 in receipts later.
With her stash of ingredients, Lauren replicated that recipe a few times at home. But by the end of the sea-son, she had moved on to another cocktail of choice. She thought there had to be an easier—and more eco-nomical way—to enjoy a bar-quality drink at home.
Six years later, the magic in a glass that Lauren and her husband experienced is available in a can for Arizonans to enjoy.
“I had this lightening-bolt moment that there are plenty of people like us who are busy and working hard that would appreciate the ease and portability of a premium cocktail that’s more accessible and ready-made,” Lauren says.
From that spark emerged their Boulder-based bev-erage company Cocktail Squad and its lineup of six classic cocktails ready-to-go and ready-to-drink in a sleek, yet convenient can.
Cocktail enthusiasts will be tempted by the Gin & Tonic, Margarita, Vodka Soda and Greyhound variet-ies. Brand new additions are a Bourbon Smash and Whiskey Sour, which is produced under nitro so it has a creamy mouthfeel and a luscious finish that mimics the profile of an egg white without it. Lauren,

who is personally a big bourbon fan, advises shaking the can before popping it open to get the full impact.
Each 12-ounce can offers two servings with a 10% ABV. Recipes use premium real spirits and natural and organic ingredients, and all non-whiskey cocktails are gluten-free. It retails for $4.99 a can and can be found locally at select grocers like AJ’s Fine Foods.
The Maggios may have come up with a new kid on the cocktail block, but they are no strangers to the food and beverage market and what makes a successful business in this space tick. John is the co-founder of Boulder Canyon Chips. Lauren has a background in investment banking and interior design.
The combination of an elevated cocktail in an easily totable vehicle makes these beverages ideal companions on quests where their glass counterparts cannot venture.
“We are the solution for modern luxury in today’s cocktail industry,” Lauren says. “Consumers today want to experience life and adventures. They don’t have to sacrifice on qual-ity while going on life’s experiences.”
This spring, Cocktail Squad cocktails made their debut in Arizona, making it the second state to carry the brand. For its creators, this makes perfect sense.
“Our premium cocktails are perfect for the seasons in Arizona and perfect for golf courses, pools, hiking, rafting… all of the great adventures Arizona offers,” Lauren says.

ADULT- AND KID-FRIENDLY NATURAL BUG REPELLENTS FROM A BEAUTIFUL MESS
your way to adiy
suMmerWHAT YOU NEED:+ 10 drops lemon essential oil+ 10 drops lemongrass essential oil+ 8 drops lavender essential oil+ 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil+ 1 ½ ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)+ ½ ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*
ADULT(AGE 15 AND OVER)
WHAT YOU DO:In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to com-bine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
KID ’SWHAT YOU NEED:+ 10 drops lemon essential oil+ 10 drops lemongrass essential oil+ 4 drops lavender essential oil+ 1 ½ ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle) + ½ ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*
WHAT YOU DO:In a 2-ounce spray bottle, add the grain alcohol (or Solubol) and drop in essential oils. Swirl to combine. Place the cap back on the bottle. Allow the oils to disperse in the alcohol for about 1 hour, then add distilled water, swirling again to combine.
*The grain alcohol is used as a preservative as well as a carrier for
the oils, but you can also use a product like this instead of grain alco-
hol at a 1:4 ratio (1 drop essential oil to 4 drops Solubol) if you’d rather
and then just fill the rest with water to fill the 2-ounce spray bottle.
While there can be concern about citrus oils on the skin when exposed to sunlight, lemongrass isn’t a photosensitive oil, and if lemon essential oil is steam-distilled rather than cold-pressed (Oui Fresh essential oils are cold-pressed) it can be used on the skin. So just make sure to note which one your lemon oil is and only spray on clothes if you don’t have a skin-safe lemon oil (which is an application method a lot of people prefer anyway if they are more sensitive to oils).

suMmerWHAT YOU NEED:+ 10 drops lemon essential oil+ 10 drops lemongrass essential oil+ 8 drops lavender essential oil+ 8 drops eucalyptus essential oil+ 1 ½ ounces distilled water (minus 1 teaspoon to make room for the essential oils in the bottle)+ ½ ounce 95% proof grain alcohol*

3 MUST-TRY RECIPES
ARTICLE DENISE MCCREERY PHOTOGRAPHY LINDSAY BORG
WONDERFUL WATERMELON
THE TEMPERATURES ARE RISING, AND NOTHING SAYS SUMMER IN THE KITCHEN LIKE THE COOL, JUICY TASTE OF WATERMELON! This versatile annual fruit has many places at the table, from breakfast to dessert, sweet to savory, and salads to slushies—there’s almost no summer dish that isn’t enhanced by the watery bite of this ancient melon.
When picking a watermelon, try to find one that is heavy for its size and has a yellow-ish patch on one side; it should sound loud and hollow when thumped. For recipes, almost anything goes with water-melon; try pairing with creamy foods like feta cheese and cucumbers, or sharp/acidic flavors such as balsamic, mint or black pep-per to keep the contrasts interesting.

THIS SUMMER HAS SPECIAL MEANING TO MANY MEMBERS OF THE GILA RIVER INDIAN COMMUNITY—THAT’S BECAUSE GILA RIVER HOTELS & CASINOS WILL KICK OFF ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY WITH A SERIES OF SPECIAL EVENTS AND PROMOTIONS OVER THE NEXT SIX MONTHS. This celebration will culminate with a massive party and concert on New Year’s Eve at Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass.
“Looking back, it’s remarkable how our community has grown,” says Kenneth Manuel, CEO of Gila River Hotels & Casinos. “When our first casino, Lone Butte, opened in 1994, it was just a modest building. Now, we have three spectacular properties that we’re very proud of: Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Wild Horse Pass and Lone Butte are both in Chandler, and Gila River Hotels & Casinos – Vee Quiva is in Laveen.”

GILA RIVER HOTELS & CASINOS KICKS OFF ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Chandler Lifestyle |38 July 2019
Kenneth credits the enormous growth of Gila River Hotels & Casinos to his tribe’s culture of collaboration.
“Many people don’t realize that our com-munity is an alliance of two tribes, the Akimel O’otham and Pee-Posh, also known as Pima and Maricopa,” he says, adding that the Gila River Indian Community was established in 1859. “Now we are the largest indigenous population in the Phoenix metropolitan area, with our borders expanding more than 600 square miles from Phoenix to Florence.”
Early on, tribal leaders recognized the importance of collaborating with others out-side of their community.
“Much of our success can be credited to our strong relationships with local and national business and civic leaders,” he says. “From an industry standpoint, our two hotels at Wild Horse Pass and Vee Quiva provide first-rate service and accommodations. Our dining facilities at all three properties have received many accolades, and we’re con-stantly upgrading our technology to bring the most exciting gaming opportunities to our casinos.”
Giving back to the community is also a priority.
“We’re proud of our Gila River Cares pro-gram, which supports local non-profits with grants throughout the year,” he says. “In addition, through our partnerships with the Arizona Cardinals, Arizona Diamondbacks and Arizona Coyotes, we are able to provide unique and once-in-a-lifetime experiences to children in the community, which has a profound impact on not just their lives, but their families as well.”
Highlights for summer include staycation deals, an Independence Day weekend of fun, giveaways and fireworks, and an exciting lineup of entertainment.

FIGHT THE INDOOR EPIDEMIC WITH PARK AND RECREATION MONTH'S FUN AND GAMES
ARTICLE CHANDLER PARKS & RECREATION | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
WHETHER YOU CONSIDER YOURSELF OUTDOORSY OR NOT, THE SUMMER SHINE MAKES THE WHOLE FAMILY EXCITED TO STRETCH THEIR LEGS AND GET SOME FRESH AIR—ESPECIALLY KIDS. But when summer temperatures get in the way of fun, sometimes it’s easier to turn on the TV and stay inside. As Americans, we spend an average of 95% of our lives indoors. Our health could be affected. This summer, #BeAnOutsider as you get your Game On and play it cool.
In this tech-driven world, it’s no surprise that Americans see more screen than green, explains Chandler Parks & Recreation Manager Joe Petrella.
“We are in the midst of an indoor epidemic due to Arizona sum-mers and our digital and sedentary lifestyles. Recreation is all about the power of play and adventure, and Park and Recreation Month provides us with the perfect opportunity to be part of the solution,” says Joe. “Studies have confirmed that parks and recreation, com-munity green space, and time outdoors is critical for creating healthy, active and sustainable communities. Some have even suggested that people feel reduced stress, improved mood, and increased energy the more time they spend outside.”
So this July—and all summer long—Chandler Parks & Rec is leading initiatives and providing opportunities for the community to achieve healthier lifestyles through a variety of programs, special events and services. Whether it’s summer camp, an adult sports league, learning to swim, exploring nature, or meeting friends in the park, parks and play go hand-and-hand in helping you live well.
Visit ChandlerAZ.gov/breaktime to build your summer, with an eye towards keeping the fun high and indoor opportunities to a minimum.
