Telangana Formation Day

The Telangana Formation Day was marked by a splendid assembly presented by students of V on the 1st & 2nd of June 2018. The occasion was graced by the Principal and the Headmistresses. The celebration commenced with the unfurling of the National Flag. Students then put up a very informative show where the audience was made aware of the various state symbols of Telangana. Students were fascinating to learn about the reason behind the state being named Telangana. Students from the middle school spoke about the history of Telangana. The long struggle for a separate state was the focal point. The inspiring narrative ended on an expectant note with a call for Bangaru Telangana. The colourful presentation concluded on a melodious note with an earthy folk song that had everyone’s foot tapping to the tune. The Celebrations did not end there. Various activities were conducted across the grades based on the culture of Telangana. These included the folk dances, the food, music, art and literature. What truly brought out the talent of the students and teachers alike was the poem recitation competition for which the ingenious canorous poems were composed by DPS students and teachers.

We the Hyderabadis

- Nayonika Mitra Class XII D There it stands. The majestic Buddha statue amidst the heart of the heart warming lake to let its magnificence catch you

Along the wondrous lake The road twists and turns with grafitti filled walls and smiling vendors A glee in your heart slowly burns

When the skies turn dark There lights up the pious buddha statue his all knowing smile and half closed eyes observes the dazzling streets, it can never get used to

There you can hear those muffled giggles there you can see children running and playing there you can see those quaint conversations in all the footpaths and the parks around the lake, winding. And when the air fill up with the smell of Hyderabadi biryani and the people converse over the enlivening Irani tea

Thats when you slowly realize, how beautiful it is to be a hyderbadi and how much more you have got to see.

My City, Hyderabad

- Nayonika Mitra Class XII D

I walked through the gusty streets of Hyderabad to smile over the Nawabs’ old, beautiful city At its heart, the high-tech buildings made me both happy and sad, But its adaab still remained intact with integrity

I saw people sharing a warm embrace Bonding in an old tea shop over a cup of Iranian tea The essence of brotherhood spread a smile on my face Along with the aroma of biryani making me dangerously hungry Shopping from the streets of Charminaar, To the markets of Laad Bazaar, Sightseeing from the Chowmalla Palace, To the Golconda fort that remains artless Gazing at ever-famous pearl market while the Birla planetarium showed the planets, The Musical Clock at Salar Jung Museum strikes twelve, And our cicerone has another story to tell

This is the city with a story to tell This is the city where everybody wishes everyone well This is the city where our boundaries fell This is the city where your memories and heart remains well

‘Yoga citta vrtti nirodhah’ – Yoga Sutra; meaning, Yoga frees you from the drama, the tragedy, the saga your mind creates and allows you to experience your ‘true self’. The longest day of the Northern hemisphere is celebrated as International Day of Yoga. This year the theme for the day was “ Yoga for peace”. Justifying the theme, the students of DPS, Hyderabad observed the day by conducting an assembly in which they shared the origin, types and benefits of yoga. Environment Day

Connecting with nature means to connect with ourselves. If we do so, we nurture a better planet. - PM, Sri Narendra Modi

On account of World Environment Day, celebrated on 5th June, every year, the students of class III observed a PAPERLESS & NO PLASTIC Day while the students of class IV observed a Don’t be Mean, Go Green Day. It was just another school day, but with a difference. The students did not carry any books to school. Parents were also requested to send metallic water bottle and lunch / pencil boxes in cloth or jute bags.

The Social Studies Dept. planned a role play to make the students of grade 4 understand the importance of clean and green environment. The students came out with the problems faced by the farmers in India, effect of global warming or changing climatic conditions on crops, how to get a good farm produce and many more burning social and environment issues. While grade 3 had a brainstorming session on the advantages of using steel or copper bottles/ boxes over plastic, English Dept. had planned a debate on Current Society Uses and Abuses of our Global Home. Hindi and Telugu Dept. had planned group discussion on environmental issues. Science Dept. had a discussion session on what changes the students are adopting or can adopt in their daily life to go green. They also discussed the preventive measures to reduce pollution. A pledge was taken to “Go Green”. Maths Dept. planned a game of Housie session for the students to be able to calculate quickly the data given to the students on environmental problem. Students’ reactions are a testimony to the fact that they learn best when they do what they care about - in this case, about the environment.

“Handwriting is rooted in the spirit, even though it appears by means of bodily senses.” ― Al-Nazzam

Inter House calligraphy contest for class III was conducted on 11 June, 2018 in order to improve presentation skills and to inculcate habit of good handwriting among the students. This event was held in view of the changing ways of written communication among children today due to the growing interest in computers. “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.” - Robert Frost

A poem is a mixture of emotions and imaginations. Poems are not about rhyming lines; their essence lies in the expression of emotions which is open to a number of interpretations. Writing, speaking, and understanding can all be greatly influenced and nurtured by the use of poetry. Speaking poetry aloud with its beat, rhythm, and rhyme can loosen the tongue and craft a firm foundation for verbal communication.

Grade VIII

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.” - Saint Augustine Humans have been travelling from time immemorial for a variety of reasons. Travelling not only takes us to distant lands and acquaints us with different people, but it also tends to break the monotony of our lives. Tourist information has been shown to have an important influence on the choice of vacation destinations. When a traveller opts to visit a place for the first time, information related to its geography, culture, important attractions, places to stay, eat and idea of cost are all very important. Travel Brochure, therefore, plays a very important role in planning a vacation. As a part of the on-going celebration of Telangana Formation week and to increase awareness about Telangana, students of Standard VIII designed beautiful and informative travel brochure for the Inter- house competition held on 14 June, 2018 on the topic “Telangana Tourism”. Students were divided into teams house-wise and the resultant team work was outstanding giving a hard time for the judges to choose the winners.

“You can't act alone. Use the props, the setting, the crew around you, and of course, your fellow actors.” - Jon Polito The earliest known use of props as stage accessories dates back to 1425 CE, The Oxford English Dictionary finds the first usage of "props" in 1841. Over the centuries use of props has seen a dramatic change. With the advent of different media props also have evolved. To give the members of the millennial a challenge, a prop mania competition was organized for classes XI & XII on 13 June, 2018. Students were given socially relevant topics and asked to present their topics with help of props. All the props had to be made by the students. A total of 4 topics were given and 16 teams from classes XI & XII participated. The students participated with much zeal and exuberance either by presenting the props or by lending their support in the making of props and audio visual support. Each group had their own interpretation and unique presentations. The judges had a difficult time to judge the best among these fantastic performances.

Telugu Learning Initiative

Just learning to think in another language allows you to see your own culture in a better viewpoint.

- Gates Mcfadden

The learning of different languages would definitely bridge the cultural barriers and would positively contribute to the cultural integration of the country. The Supreme Court has ruled that a state government can make learning of its regional language compulsory even in linguistic minority in order to strengthen national integration and cement the gap between different cultural segments in the society. The decision of Telangana Government of making Telugu as a compulsory third language has been accepted with open arms by our young Dipsites. Most of the kids have said that they are

enjoying learning Telugu a lot. Surprisingly, there are many Telugu speaking kids who are learning to read and write Telugu for the first time. Few testimonials of enthusiastic learners:

“Even though it is difficult, as it is not my mother tongue, I am enjoying it and want to learn it as fast as I can.” – Aishani Roy Chodhury “I am enjoying it a lot. It is good to learn our state language.”- Keertana “New language is difficult but exploring is good. “ – Karthikeyan “I always wanted to learn to read and write Telugu. I know how to speak Telugu.” – Nishchay “Good to learn a new language as I am from Maharashtra.” - Nitya Bharat “My grandmother can communicate only in Telugu. So I need to learn Telugu to be able to read her letters and also write to her.” Shivesh “Road signs and direction can be read and understood,”- Vishnu “I am from Odisha. My mother doesn’t know Telugu. So, now I can help her to communicate with the maid and other local people.” - Prajukt Manik “I am enjoying the Telugu poems.” Ahana “Enjoying speaking in Telugu with my non-Telugu friends.” Sanyu

Theme of the Month

“Little Kids enjoy all the little things in the world, like everything is amazing”.

To introduce our little dipsites to the world of colors, art & craft, a very innovative theme of the month was organized, called “Picasso’s Play Time” where various colourful activities & unique ideas were planned. Smearing paint on paper, feeling the touch of soft colourful clay, vibrant paper crumpling without any distraction was part of the event.

It is said that “the kids are the master of the moment”. Art & craft not only fosters creativity, but also develops the child –mentally, emotionally & socially. Inclusion of such activities in our curriculum at this stage boosts their self-confidence. It acts as the driver for the improvement of child’s fine motor skills, cognitive skills and experiment with the materials.

The Event started with the introduction of ‘who the artists are’. Children were asked to imagine themselves as ‘Little Artist’ and they were made aware of the tools used for painting and also helped them to know new words (of names of tools). A poem ’we are the little scouts’ was recited by the children, followed by a group activity- sponge dabbing on Rainbow with two groups each section. Children were also engaged with activities like paper crumpling, making Tulips and clay modeling.

“The Picasso’s playtime” also included the individual activities like finger printing on flower (for Nursery) and Fish cutout craft (for Prep). The event was concluded by showing kids a movie, “The little engine that could” which emphasized on the first habit of “7 habits of highly effective people” – Be Proactive.

It was a successful event in inculcating love for art and craft in the young minds.
