Like most high school students,Dusty realized SRJC could be astepping stone to the next phase inhis life. "The classes at SRJC weremore challenging. Once I started atSRJC, I realized it was muchharder than any of the UC's. Theclasses I eventually took at UCSBwere actually easier than those Icompleted at SRJC."

After finishing his bachelor'sdegree, Dusty worked for some ofthe top technology companies as aprogrammer, including Sonic.netand Blizzard Entertainment, as a programmer for World of Warcraftgame.

Why I Give: Building the Future Workforce of Sonoma County

As a manufacturer of high precision, liquid flow meters, Max Machinery is keenly aware that locally trainedtechnicians and engineers are in short supply. To remain competitive, area manufactures must support localprograms that will set students on a career path into the technical disciplines. For decades Max Machinery's latefounder, John Max, was the primary sponsor of the local high school science fairs.

In John's honor, Max Machinery continues to support science and technology programs in the Sonoma Countyarea. Through donations of equipment, hiring of student interns and school group tours, they continue to introducestudents to a high-tech manufacturing environment.

This spring, Max Machinery made a sizable donation of electric components and PCAs to SRJC's ElectronicsProgram for student use in the classroom. "I hope that our support of the SRJC will make it possible foradditional students to master the skills that we will need in Sonoma County for the decades ahead." says PaulHock, Marketing Manager.

Thank you to Max Machinery and our local business community for supporting the workforce of the future at SRJC.If you, or your organization, would like to donate to SRJC, please contact Sarah Laggos at 707-527-4733 [email protected].

Spotlight on Shone Farm: SRJC's Outdoor Learning Laboratory

Page 4: July 2016 - Home | Santa Rosa Junior College Foundation

SRJC's Shone Farm, a 365-acre outdoor learning laboratory forstudents enrolled in the Agriculture/Natural ResourcesDepartment, was recently featured in the North Bay BizMagazine.

The article highlighted the multi-faceted nature of the farm, whichincludes a winery, forest, pasture, vineyard, commercial kitchenand horse pavilion/event center. SRJC Viticulture, Wine Studies,Equine Studies, Animal Science, Sustainable Agriculture,Natural Resource Management and Environmental Conservationstudents learn the hands on skills needed in their respectivedisciplines at Shone Farm.

Shone Farm also practices what it preaches in sustainability. The farm uses an electric vehicle to transverse themany acres and receives recycled water from Windsor for crops. Students are educated in various programs aboutsustainability and renewable practices in agriculture and farming.

Shone Farm produces a variety of crops for a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program including zucchini, berries, cucumbers, apples, fresh herbs, tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, apples, winter squash and more. Theprogram is open to the public to participate. The community is also able to visit the farm during the annual FallFestival in October and pick produce, enjoy a bbq and other family friendly activities.

SRJC Ag and Natural Resources graduates are well prepared for the workplace or to continue their studies at afour-year university at this unique facility.

Professor Profile: Donald Laird, Computer StudiesDonald Laird's jovial, positive energy fills his computer science classes; he can transform a room within his firsttwo sentences. And his constant curiosity helps keep the department he chairs in tune with the latest trends intechnology.

Donald's story is intertwined with SRJC'sstory. When he was an SRJC student, studentemployee, and math tutor at the College in the late1980s, he met his future wife during one of theEngineering Club's field trips to the CaliforniaAcademy of Sciences.

The first class Donald taught at SRJC was Intro toMacintosh and throughout his years at SRJC he'sbeen an instructor for 24 different classes.

His lectures are hands-on and fun. While he sharespractical computer science knowledge to help hisstudents start their careers or advance at work, healso likes making them laugh. Either his puns or hisshirts might do this job - he sports a collection ofunusually bright shirts, because "if my lectures don'tkeep students awake, my wardrobe will."

Read more about Donald's story and his plans to keepthe computer science curriculum relevant for today's market.
