Messages from NET Leadership

NET Television first signed on the air in 1954. Now, 60 years later, it’s time to celebrate that anniversary and see how the network has grown from humble and limited beginnings to a vibrant statewide network comprising television and radio.

Come tour the NET television and radio studios, see the Remote Truck and meet on-air personalities and news reporters at NET’s Open House, from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 16, at the Terry M. Carpenter and Jack G. McBride Nebraska Educational Telecommunications Center, 1800 N.33rd St., in Lincoln.

Learn about NET and enjoy chatting with our team to see how your favorite NET-produced programs are put together. The Platte Basin Time Lapse Project team will have videos about this unique science project. Producers from NET Sports and Big Red Wrap-Up, Nebraska Stories and QUEST Science will be on hand to talk about their projects. You can also meet and learn about Vision Maker Media, which works with Native producers to develop, produce and distribute all types of programming by and for Native people, including American Indians and Alaska Natives.

NET’s Learning Services group will tell about initiatives such as Nebraska Ready To Learn and State of Education in Nebraska series.

NET Radio personalities, including Genevieve Randall and Lora Black, will be joined by NET News Director Dennis Kellogg, in showing off NET Radio’s studios.

NET General Manager and CEO Mark Leonard hosts this free family event.

For more information, check netNebraska.org.

Mark Leonard NET CEO and General Manager July marks the beginning of NET’s fiscal year, and 11 months since I arrived in Nebraska as NET General Manager. It has been an exciting year for me, getting to know the state and the wonderful work that NET does. Your continued support of NET allows a lot of amazing things to happen. Probably my greatest surprise has been the sports productions on NET. It is a pleasure to be able to watch

high school sports championships on NET. I doubt that there is any other public broadcaster who covers the range of sports with the quality level that NET achieves in its sports coverage every month. And of course, Big Red Wrap-Up is a perennial audience favorite during football season. Backyard Farmer is a gem and a real piece of broadcast history as the longest-running television series in public television. It may be the second-longest continuing running series in all of television! Documentaries, news and public affairs are all part of NET’s local production portfolio. Signature Stories daily on NET Radio offer you deeper coverage of issues affecting Nebraskans. Nebraska’s Capitol Masterpiece shared the splendor and history of this groundbreaking architectural treasure. And Growing Up Gambling examined the impact of gambling, particularly on our youth. This is only the tip of the iceberg! NET is part of the fabric of Nebraska, telling the stories, celebrating the traditions, and addressing the key issues affecting our State. Thank you for your support, and know that you are an essential part of preserving this powerful tradition.

Debbie Hamlett Assistant General Manager for Development and Marketing You’re holding the first edition of NET’s redesigned member magazine. It’s a smaller size that translates into significant cost savings on postage and allows us to send the magazine to nearly three times as many members. NET Now’s new format features larger and easier to read text, and a weekly schedule of primetime offerings on NET’s three stations – NET1, NET2 World and NET3 Create. At the top of each page you’ll find highlights of the PBS and local

programming you’re sure to enjoy. NET Now still includes information about special NET events happening around the state and remarkable stories about those who generously support our organization. You’ll also still find the daytime television listings and the schedule for NET Radio. And, an online version is available on our website if you choose to access it electronically. This month, we celebrate America with A Capitol Fourth, the state’s best student athletes compete in Nebraska High School Basketball and Volleyball All-Star games and PBS’s summer offerings include a second season of Last Tango in Halifax and a new season of Masterpiece Mystery! Endeavour. All of this happens with your generous support and we couldn’t be more grateful. Thank you. We are serious about serving our members – and we’ve thoughtfully designed this new version of our magazine with you in mind. Sit down with a glass of iced tea or a cup of coffee and look it over. Then, if you’d like, please let me know what you think. You can reach me by phone at 402-470-6380 or via email at [email protected].

NET Television presents stunning aerial views of Nebraska in an hour-long presentation NEBRASKA Land & Sky. In summer 2013, British aerial photography team Skyworks spent a week filming Nebraska. Shooting from

a helicopter, Skyworks and NET teamed to film and archive Nebraska’s unique landscape and the perspective from the air is extraordinary.

“You don’t have to go very far before the landscape completely changes,” said Richard Mervyn, Skyworks’ director of photography. “The Sandhills were completely riveting. I likened it to waves; I mean, it just looks like a choppy sea of green. I haven’t seen anything like that before. Scotts Bluff National Monument was fascinating. Nebraska is more varied than I thought. It looked brilliant.”

Skyworks’ high-quality footage appears in many National Geographic, BBC and PBS national productions. This program weaves the visual beauty of Nebraska with our history, heritage and legacy in a way that captures our magnificent land and sky.

Fly with us when NEBRASKA Land & Sky premieres in August on NET1.

A production of NET Television.

Coming in August to NET1
