Dear Friends,

Nearly 100 members and friends of NET attended events at Chadron State College's Mari Sandoz Heritage Center and the Scottsbluff Country Club in late September during our Inspire Nebraska Campaign swing through the Panhandle (see pages 12-13 for photos and a story about the events). As always, our faithful supporters rolled out the red carpet for us. The genuine appreciation Nebraskans have for NET seems to run stronger the farther west we travel in the state. So many folks tell us that NET Television was one of the very few channels they received over the airwaves when they were younger. Likewise it seems the appreciation for NET Radio is as strong, if not stronger, in the Panhandle than anywhere else.

Sometimes those of us in the eastern part of the state think of the Panhandle as a distant land somehow dislocated and separate from the rest of Nebraska. But it never fails – when we travel to that region it’s clear just the opposite is true. The Panhandle region contains vibrant, thriving communities and resourceful, innovative residents who are very much in tune with the entire state ofNebraska. Panhandle residents possess great pride in their culture, their beautiful landscape and their communities.

Michele Peón-Casanova, Ron Hull, Dawn Amory and I greatly appreciated the Panhandle supporters’ hospitality, as well as their financial support of NET and their warm commendation of NET’s programming and services. From everyone at NET, I want to say thank you to the Panhandle for their many decades of loyal support.

Sincerely,

November Celebrate Big Band Spotlight and NET RadioFriday, November 127-9 p.m.NET Studio One1800 North 33rd StreetLincoln

simplify Your life: become an neT sustaining Member We want to make life easier for you, which is why we’ve launched the NET Sustaining Member program. This initiative is particularly useful for long-time members who commit support to NET Television and/or NET Radio every season. The program works like this:

• Your annual gift is deducted directly from your bank account through a secure withdrawal system or charged automatically to your credit card.

• You decide the gift amount, the method of contribution and the interval (monthly, quarterly or annually).

• Your membership will be automatically renewed each year, so you will not receive multiple renewal notices in the mail or wonder when your membership is due.

You can withdraw from the Sustaining Member program or change your gift amount or the process by which you give at any time.

Your Sustaining support will reduce administrative costs and ensure that your contribution is a full investment in the quality programming you love and respect.

With unprecedented access granted by Big Apple Circus, viewers of Circus will get an insider’s look not only under the big top, but far beyond it – into what circus performers call the “backyard,” where the real heart of the circus beats.

This multi-part series showcases this “city without a zip code” and captures the training and rehearsals, the flubs and foibles, the work and the intensity of life in the circus. It also offers a revealing behind-the-scenes look at how the company of a large traveling circus governs itself. And it explores the ways the company navigates conflict and underscores just how challenging it can be to spend day and night for nine months straight with 150 other people of differing nationalities, belief systems and backgrounds.

This new NET News investigative documentary examines one of the most controversial crime stories in recent state history. In 2006 a respected farmer and his wife were murdered in their Murdock, Nebraska home. Four years later, the questions remain. Over the course of a year NET News producer Bill Kelly attended trials, interviewed key participants and reviewed thousands of pages of documents. The results of his research unveil the best and worst of a justice system struggling to find the truth.

Astronaut Clay Anderson may have had his sights set on space, but his heart has always been firmly planted in Nebraska. The “Homemade Astronaut” made it back to the Cornhusker State in late September, and he stopped by NET to greet fans and reconnect with Sue Maryott, producer of the NET Television special Homemade Astronaut, and other NET employees.

General Manager Rod Bates, Maryott and several other NET staffers traveled to Florida in April 2010 to witness Anderson make his third trip into space aboard the space shuttle Discovery. Mission Specialist Anderson, of Ashland, packed a photograph of NET staffers for the trip to the International Space Station, where he spent two weeks and performed three space walks. When Anderson visited NET in September he returned the photo and presented an official plaque to Bates and Maryott.

“When you sit on the inside of the shuttle, you don’t get a sense of what’s going on with the people who are gathered to watch the launch,” said Anderson, after he viewed footage of the April launch with the NET staff gathered. “Watching the video footage and seeing the reaction of the crowd is very moving to me.”

Guests received Dr. Seuss-themed bookmarks and coloring sheets, and enjoyed story time too. In addition, 10 percent of all purchases made at Barnes and Noble that morning benefitted NET Television. “We looked! Then we saw him step in on the mat! We looked! And we saw him! The Cat in the Hat!”

Children, parents and grandparents thought the

Dr. Seuss’s most famous feline, the Cat in the Hat, posed for pictures and shook paws with 500 visitors at the O Street Barnes and Noble in Lincoln on September 18 to celebrate the debut of the brand-new PBS Kids’ program The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That (weekdays at 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. CT on NET1/NET-HD).

breaking news: Dennis Kellogg Joins neT

“News, this is Dennis” is how NET News Director Dennis Kellogg answered his first phone call on September 22, his first day on the job at NET.

Call it habit or call it instinct, but the truth is, Kellogg has answered his

phone with those very same words for much of the 23 years he has worked in broadcast journalism.

In his new position leading the team of seven radio and television reporters at NET News, Kellogg will tap into his wide range of experience in radio, television and the Web.

“I’ve been doing a lot of thinking about where NET can go and grow,” Kellogg said. “Having spent my whole career in commercial broadcasting, I know that the pace and style of public broadcasting

will be very different. I’m looking forward to producing longer, more in-depth news stories.”

“Dennis will be responsible for setting the vision for news coverage and the execution of that vision on NET Radio, NET Television and NET online,” said David Feingold, assistant general manager for content. “He will lead the news team in the creation of daily news content, specials, series and documentaries.”

A native of North Platte, Kellogg graduated from the University of Dayton in Ohio and later received a master’s degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University in New York. His previous experience includes employment as the news and sports director at KODY-AM and KXNP-FM in North Platte; news anchor and sports director at North Platte’s KNOP-TV; news reporter and weekend news anchor at WSTM-TV, the NBC affiliate in Syracuse; and, for the last 12 years, news director at KHAS-TV in Hastings.

Looking back at his career, Kellogg said he is most proud of the feature stories that focused on unique Nebraskans across the state. Of the 300-plus profiles he completed for “A Day in the Heartland” series over the last seven years, many were about military veterans. Kellogg flew on five of the seven Honor Flights to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. with Nebraska veterans.

Kellogg and his wife Jennifer, a fifth grade teacher in Grand Island, have three grown children, all of whom live in Lincoln.

a Positively Perfect Panhandle Visit

The Mari Sandoz Heritage Center at Chadron State College and the Scottsbluff Country Club were the most recent stops on NET’s Inspire Nebraska Campaign tour across Nebraska. More than 100 supporters turned out at the end of last month to celebrate NET Television and Radio and raise funds for future programming.

“I am invigorated every time I’m in Chadron or Alliance or Scottsbluff and meet the people who support NET,” said Campaign Co-Chair Ron Hull. “As one person I spoke to said, ‘Our children have this beautiful community to live in, they are close to the land, they have the animals and the wide, open spaces, and, thanks to NET, the world is brought to them through responsible radio and television programs.’ I couldn’t have said it better myself!”

Campaign leader Nancy Forney, of Scottsbluff, served on the NET Foundations Board for two years and was in attendance at the Scottsbluff event. “Both NET Television and NET Radio are essential,” said Forney, “not only because of the programming, the in-depth news and the unbiased reporting, but also because the networks keep the state connected.”

Forney also mentioned that while the kickoff events in September are a great start, the real work begins with group and individual meetings. “That’s when the Campaign leaders and NET staff members will explain the long-term benefits of the Campaign,” she said.

The Inspire Nebraska Campaign will host more dinner events coming next spring with stops in western Nebraska. Stay tuned!

In The NewsPanhandle Patrons: rita and John stinner

For people “on the move,” like John and Rita Stinner of Scottsbluff, NET is part of their everyday lives. NET Radio travels with the Stinners from their home to the office and back again.

“If I am in my car, NET Radio is my companion,” Rita said.

Music, especially classical and opera, is close to Rita’s heart. While a student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Rita not only sang in many UNL Music School operas, she was also named a Metropolitan Opera Awards Medalist. Besides being an accomplished vocalist, Rita also acts and directs. A few years ago, she played the lead role of Florence in the Nebraska Repertory Theatre’s production Souvenirs.

As the Director of Music at Western Nebraska Community College, Rita encourages her students to listen to NET Radio. She personally adores the NET Radio local program Classics By Request, hosted by Lora Black.

Both Rita and John are very involved in the Gering/Scottsbluff community. John is the president and CEO of Valley Bank & Trust and a former Husker football player (1969-1973) coached by both gridiron legends Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne.

Rita’s commitment to NET includes serving on the NET Foundation for Television and Radio Board of Directors. She just signed up for her third consecutive term. The Stinners are also major donors to the Inspire Nebraska Campaign.

“We wholeheartedly support the Campaign,” Rita said. “We want to ensure the future stability, success and growth of NET Television and Radio, particularly in the western part of Nebraska. We can’t imagine not listening to NET Radio every day. It’s just a part of our everyday lives.”

Visitors to Nebraska City last month harvested more than McIntosh, Golden Delicious and Granny Smith apples as a steady stream of history buffs stopped by the Lewis & Clark Visitors Center for Friday Live and History Harvest.

Broadcast live from the center on Friday, September 10, NET Radio’s Friday Live featured Will Thomas, University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Professor of History and History Harvest project coordinator. Host William Stibor also interviewed Erv Friesen, Rose Ralstin, Barbara Heger and Heather Austin about upcoming Nebraska City arts and culture events, while local musicians ReLeasT and Andrew Turpening performed live on the show.

On Sunday, September 12, Nebraskans shared their old letters, photographs, diaries, maps, images, documents and other noteworthy items with Thomas and his team of student historians. The objects were analyzed, photographed, documented and in some cases filmed for an upcoming NET Television program.

“Our nation’s history intersects with family histories all the time,” said Thomas. “The History Harvest project hopes to bring these segments together and open up new sources for understanding our past.”

banking on a Great PartnershipFrom the Sandhill Cranes to the Creighton Bluejays, First National Bank of Omaha is invested in the faces, places and rich treasures that make Nebraska such a unique and gratifying state. One way First National Bank demonstrates its loyalty to Nebraskans is through its underwriting partnerships with NET Television. Over the past 10 years First National has supported dozens of programs, including documentaries like Crane Song; Nebraska, Creighton and University of Nebraska at Omaha sports action and, most recently, daily children’s programming. “First National Bank has been a long-time supporter of NET because of the quality programming and diverse content that it offers,” said Kevin Langin, First National Bank’s director of public relations. “In addition, the geographic reach and its ongoing focus on the people and places of Nebraska are important benefits that can only be found on NET Television.” “We truly value the underwriting support First National Bank has offered NET over the last 10 years,” said Michael Winkle, NET’s assistant general manager for business development. “It’s this type of corporate support that allows NET’s quality television and radio

neT Upholds long Tradition of Watchfulness

“The Salvation of the State is the Watchfulness of its Citizens,” reads the famous inscription engraved above the doors of the Nebraska State Capitol. That statement rings most true when the subject of gavel-to-gavel live television coverage of the Legislature is discussed. During a late September Inspire Nebraska Campaign event in Chadron, State Senator LeRoy Louden of Ellsworth spoke eloquently about the valuable service NET brings to the citizens of the Nebraska Panhandle. Before a crowd of enthusiastic NET supporters, Louden thanked NET for providing such complete coverage of the Unicameral sessions, as well as public hearings and special session meetings to listeners and viewers [coverage is also streamed online]. He emphasized how valuable it is for citizens in the western part of the state and those across Nebraska to be informed on the important issues of governance today. “Ever since NET signed on the air in 1954, we have provided programming, discussion and analysis on state governance,” said Ron Hull, NET Special Advisor. “NET is proud of this longstanding tradition.”

We are grateful to Jeanette Rasmuson, of Fremont, who recently bequeathed more than $120,000 to NET Television.

Ms. Rasmuson watched the NET Television documentary Canteen Spirit more than 10 times – she was a true fan of local, Nebraska-based programs, including specials like Widescreen Nebraska, Hear That Train A Comin’ and Holiday Harmonies.

“Everything on NET Television is A-1 quality,” Ms. Rasmuson told us during a membership pledge drive in 2005.

If you are interested in including NET Television and/or NET Radio in your estate plans, please contact one of the NET Foundations staff members pictured at the bottom of this page.

new neT foundation board Chairmen namedTwo longtime NET Foundations for Television and Radio Board of Directors have moved up the leadership ranks. New Board Chair, Dr. Bradley Krivohlavek of Norfolk, has taken over the chairmanship reins from Brian Alexander Young of Omaha. Serving as Vice Chair of the Foundation Board of Directors is John McPhail of Columbus.

Krivohlavek, an NET member since 1998 and a board member since 2004, has been a dentist in Norfolk for 31 years. A graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Dentistry with a degree in dental surgery, Krivohlavek opened his practice in Norfolk on June 1, 1979. Originally from Fremont, Bradley and wife Brenda have three grown children, Amy, Scott and Jeff. The Krivohlaveks are active in many church and civic activities in the Norfolk area.

McPhail, a retired attorney and former general counsel for Nebraska Public Power District, has been a member of NET Television since 1993, of NET Radio since 1998 and on the Foundations board since 2003. A native of Omaha, John and his wife Linda are active in many areas of the Columbus community when they are not traveling internationally.

“We are just delighted that Brad and John have stepped up to serve NET in such important roles,” said Jeff Beckman, NET Foundations Executive Director. “We all look forward to working together on seeing a successful completion of the $25 million Inspire Nebraska Campaign that will support future programming on NET Television and Radio for generations to enjoy.”
