Could YOU be an on-call fire fighter?ShepShed Fire Station are looking to recruit on call Fire Fighters.This is a part time position

providing fire rescue cover to the community of Shepshed and the surrounding villages. Suitable candidates must be at

least 18 years of age, physically fit, and be able to respond to the station within 4 minutes from either their place of work or home address.Potential candidates will be

expected to undergo a series of tests which include educational test, job related tests and a medical examination. Successful applicants will be fully re-imbursed for the work they carry out and will be eligible to join the service pension scheme.Most importantly the successful

Newhurst Quarry environmental permit approved by agencythe environment agency has decided to issue an environmental permit for an energy from waste facility at Shepshed in Leicestershire.Biffa Waste Services Limited, will operate the facility,

which burns waste at high temperatures, using the resulting energy to generate electricity. The decision to issue the permit was made

following careful consideration of all aspects of the application and taking into account views from the public and organisations. This permit (issued under the Environmental Permitting (England & Wales) Regulations 2010) requires the company to comply with all relevant legislation including strict air emission and monitoring standards. geoff craig, Pollution Prevention Control Team Leader said: “We have carefully considered all the responses and

have issued this permit because we are satisfied it contains the necessary conditions and control measures to ensure that Biffa Waste Services Limited operate in a way that will protect both the environment and human health.’ “Issuing the permit is only the first stage in our regulation of the facility. Should it be built, we will monitor its

environmental performance, including emissions to air, to ensure that permit conditions are not breached.” Our environmental permit decision is separate from the planning process. Planning permission allows a new site to

be built. An environmental permit allows the site to operate once it has been built.Any permit that is issued is made available on our public registers. If you would like to see a copy of the final permit

Offer Of Free Home Compost Bins (220 litre)Due to receipt of a Climate Change Grant from Charnwood Borough Council, Shepshed Town Council

has been able to purchase 36 Home Compost Bins which will be made available FREE of charge to residents of Shepshed. The bins will be allocated on a first come basis and you must be able to collect

Shepshed team triumph in Memorial swimming galaReport from Steve Russellthe Bryan moore and andy munn memorial Swimming gala took place on 21st may at hind Leys community college, and what a fantastic evening it turned out to be!There were four teams involved:-

Shepshed, Swadlincote, Coalville and Loughborough. The pool was packed to the rafters and what an atmosphere - I think my ears are still ringing now. The support was brilliant and in every event we all knew who Shepshed were and I am positive this urged all our swimmers on.With a squad of 38 swimmers on

show we had a phenomenal 33 Personal Bests and, such a short time after our time trials as well, this was a great achievement. All the teaching and coaching staff should take credit for this. It shows us all that the hard work and dedication is paying off and we are definitely heading in the right direction. Out of the 50 events we had 16 first places and 8 second places but to be quite honest it would be very difficult to

single out any individual swimmer’s performance as everybody was outstanding. That means almost half the events we took the top two positions.After half way through the gala there were three teams all within four points and although we were leading a good

second half was needed. We kept this theme going throughout the evening and going into the last two events we were two points in front of Coalville, then three points. We needed two points from the last event the cannon to ensure we lifted the trophy and with twenty swimmers waiting their turn it was very tense.We started off well but then started to slip back a little and were nearly a length behind at one stage but everybody

dug deep and on the final takeover there were three teams neck and neck fighting for the win but in a gripping finale Chris Moore brought us home in first place and the noise nearly blew the roof off.A fitting finish to a great night and I would like to thank everybody involved in the club for their support, hard work

and dedication as without this we wouldn’t be able to enjoy great nights like this.• The gala is a memorial event in memory of Bryan Moore and Andy Munn, two policemen who were tragically killed

on the M42 in the line of duty. Bryan’s children Chris and Vicky are active members of our club and this year the police donated a trophy for the event.

tuesday 14th June saw the Shepshed history society being entertained by mr. Ken day who gave an excellent and entertaining talk on Fun in a Bookshop. A popular speaker with the

society, Mr. Day related amusing tales of antique bookshops, the treasures people find in old books and the odd antics of the book shop owners themselves. Today he assures us, the old familiar second hand bookshops are a part of life that are rapidly becoming part of history themselves and the true historian will sadly mourn their passing. The speaker for the July meeting will be Mrs. Austin giving a talk on Life in

the Fifties.

We are definitely now well and truly in to summer, and i have been thoroughly enjoying the opportunity to get out and about visiting local clubs, schools and businesses around the constituency.With the warmer weather, many

of us take the time to capitalise on some of our precious green spaces and I therefore welcome the Government’s plans to protect our natural environment.I know that the preservation of

our green spaces is high on the agenda for many Shepshed and Loughborough residents. Measures in these plans would

give local people more power to protect the green spaces they value, and encourage Charnwood Borough Council and other local bodies to work much more closely together.The package of proposals has

Olympic torch relay for Charnwood schoolchildrenFOUR-hundred schoolchildren will take part in a ‘mini-Olympics’ to launch a major project to take an original 1948 Olympic torch to every school in Charnwood.With 400 days left until London

2012, Charnwood Borough Council has organised the Torch to School project, in partnership with Loughborough University and Loughborough College, to inspire young people to get more involved in sport. Children from 10 schools will

represent countries at the event which is being held at Loughborough University’s athletics track on Thursday, June 23. It will feature an opening and closing ceremony, sports and the start of the torch relay.The torch, which has been donated

by Loughborough College, will then embark on a 12-month tour to visit every one of the borough’s 65 schools. Councillor David Snartt,

Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services, said: “We’re delighted to have secured a torch from the 1948 games to inspire children who could be our future Olympians. It really does bring the past, present and future together in the name of sport.”

Speeding traffic discussed at the June Forum meetingthe latest meeting of Shepshed and hathern area Forum was held in hathern, at hathern club, on 16th June 2011.The main item on the agenda at the meeting, as a result of this being

asked for at the previous meeting, was a discussion on speeding traffic in Shepshed and Hathern. Chair of the Forum, county councillor mrs radford, invited members to identify which roads were particularly hazardous, and why, and then mike Wilson, from Leicestershire County Council, outlined how the local community can help to educate people to reduce their speed through forming a local Community Speedwatch group. Shepshed is currently undergoing a procedure to produce a plan to

meet local priorities and local members of the group were present. anne glasper, secretary of the group, explained that speeding, as an issue, was raised sufficiently often to meet the criteria to be able to set up a speed group. pc phil martindale said that though the police know that speeding is an issue it isn’t their first priority to respond to, and if the community could do something to help themselves, this would make a very important contribution. graham compton, Leicestershire Police, explained the work, and successes, of the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Road Safety Partnership.The meeting also received an inspiring presentation on the Passion Youth

Club from mads morgan. Passion is a faith-based youth organisation which has been operating in Shepshed for two years, It has done a great deal of outreach work for the Diocese of Leicester, and what works well in Shepshed is often replicated elsewhere in Leicestershire. She was pleased to introduce dan gardiner, the new youth worker, to the Forum and Dan outlined what he planned to do in the Summer and Autumn.paul goodman, Community Engagement Officer, outlined the success of

the projects supported by the Area Forum’s budget last year. There is a new budget available for the Forum, with a Workshop meeting of the Forum to be held on 1st December to decide on how to spend it to meet local priorities. If you have an idea of a project which is appropriate and feasible (it can be delivered by 30th June 2012) and which has a long-term, lasting, effect please begin preparing your ideas and getting relevant costings. Ultimately, the decision will be taken by people who attend the meeting on 1st December.There will be another Forum meeting in the early Autumn (date and

venue to be agreed) and more information and help will be available then.Mrs Radford, chair of the Forum, was thought it had been a positive

meeting and thanked all who had contributed. “Hopefully, with the support of Shepshed Town Council, the Shepshed Plan Group can form a Community Speedwatch group and begin to do something about speeding in the town” she said. Borough Councillor Local InformationFoLLoWing my re-election in may i have been allocated different committees, I am still on the Planning Committee, but no longer sit on the Licensing

Committee. I now sit on the Standard Committee and the Overview Scrutiny Committee; this Committee will be very interesting as it scrutinises papers to be discussed at the Cabinet before they go to Cabinet and this Committee is then able to raise concerns or suggestions to the Cabinet prior to them discussing the papers. I am pleased to report that Charnwood Borough Council are extending

their no parking on pavements policy which in some areas of Shepshed have been a major concern to residents who are unable to walk on pavements with pushchairs or disabled buggies. There is now a telephone number to report the problem - 01509 634564 - please use it to help the disabled and young mums walks safely on Shepshed pavements.This being a new Council there has been quite a considerable amount of

training which I have attended which has enabled me to be brought up to date with new policies.I work closely with the Clerk to the Town Council and the Shepshed Town

Councillors and at all times I will only support any proposals at the Borough which will have no detrimental effect to Shepshed and its residents. I hold a regular monthly surgery together with my fellow Conservative

Pavement Parking campaign rolled out across Charnwooda maJor crackdown on pavement parking is being rolled out across charnwood following a successful pilot scheme in Loughborough.The Cars Off Pavements campaign

was launched in Loughborough in March to stop vehicles from blocking pavements and has led to a 75 per cent reduction in incidents at four hotspot areas.Blocked pavements put vulnerable

people at risk as pedestrians in wheelchairs, parents with pushchairs or the partially sighted are forced to walk on busy roads to get by. The campaign is a joint initiative

between Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire Police and the Royal National Institute for the Blind. Claire Kay, regional campaigns officer for the RNIB in Loughborough,

said: “Speaking as someone with sight loss myself it can be incredibly difficult when confronted by a car blocking your path. In some situations I have been forced to walk into the road which is not the safest of options. “People who park on pavements in most cases do not do this maliciously,

they simply haven’t thought about the possible consequences of their actions. We hope this campaign will make people more aware of how their actions could impact on the lives of others and hopefully make them think twice.”The campaign aims to raise awareness of the issue, deter motorists from

parking on pavements and to prosecute drivers who flout the law.In just two months, the Loughborough pilot scheme received more than

90 reports to a dedicated hotline and email address identifying offenders.Councillor David Snartt, Chairman of the Charnwood Community Safety

Partnership which has helped fund the campaign, said: “This is an extremely serious issue which is why the safety partnership felt it necessary to help provide funding to publicise it.“Motorists have no excuse and should make no mistake – if we get a report

Leicestershire pilots new integrated day care service in librariesLeiceSterShire county council is improving services and saving money by proposing to run day care from its largest library.Work is well underway on a major new project

that will integrate day care provision for adults with services in Loughborough Library. Lead by Leicestershire County Council, the project is believed to be one of the first in the country and will make council services much more accessible to members of the public and enable them to enjoy a wider variety of services under one roof. This project is part of the council’s wider day

care services strategy and as well as the benefits to local people, the move will help the council make significant savings in the future by relocating services currently housed in other buildings.Last month, the Council’s Cabinet approved plans for the project to be piloted at Loughborough Library. The library will be extended and refurbished to include modern fully equipped accommodation to provide day

care services including activity areas, office space, a kitchenette, an area for therapeutic activities and it will also have an open air courtyard.The work will also allow for a major local studies collection about the history of Loughborough and the County to

be relocated from the first floor of the library to the ground floor making it more easily accessible to library users.The new integrated service will offer a full range of day care services for people with physical or learning

disabilities and will provide the opportunity for them to use the library and its resources whilst in the vicinity. Loughborough Library is located centrally and offers easy access to other services and facilities in the town.Subject to planning permission, it is anticipated that the project at the library will be completed by summer next

year. The project may be extended to include other libraries within the county in the future.david Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said: “This new

way of delivering services to Leicestershire people will ensure that members of the public are able to access important day care services whilst being able to enjoy a whole range of other facilities and resources at our libraries. I am pleased that we are amongst the first in the Country to take on this initiative that will shape how council services are delivered in the future.”

£340,000 Big Society boost for countya £340,000 people power fund is being launched by Leicestershire county council, to get community schemes off the ground.It’s part of the council’s support

for the Government’s Big Society, which aims to enable people to take key decisions over their lives, to run local services, to buy land and buildings and encourage people to take part.The county council has launched

a £340,000 fund to support the pump-priming work that’s required, such as:• Identifying community needs• Developing a business plan• Getting technical or legal advice• Advice on running a specific

ShepShed & diStrict round table no.1160, affiliated to the international round table movement, located within area 14 of the u.K. organisation, ceased to exist in Shepshed in 2008 after 33 years active service to the community. The Round Table Movement is an organisation of like-minded young

business men between the ages of 18 and 45 who meet regularly for fun and fellowship and are renowned for helping communities and good causes throughout the world. Chartered in 1975, the Shepshed club was formed by members of Loughborough and Coalville Round Tables when the movement was expanding. Unfortunately in latter years the Movement has become a victim of a world-wide reduction in membership which has seen a number of Round Table Clubs disband including Coalville and Shepshed.The international 41 Club movement was formed to enable ex Round

Tablers to continue to meet after they had passed the age of permitted membership and to which Round Table members, having reached the age of 40 may be invited to join. This movement is set up in the same way as the Round Table on an international basis. A very active 41 Club has existed in Shepshed since 1983 and still meets monthly for fun and fellowship. However, since the demise of the Shepshed Round Table the club no longer has an automatic influx of new members and would therefore welcome interest from any ex Round Tablers over the age of 40 in the area to come along to our meetings. It doesn’t matter which Round Table you were a member of or for how long. Following concerns raised by a large number of residents regarding the position of the War Memorial, the Conservatives promised if elected to look into the possibility of moving it to somewhere more central. This we have started by setting up a sub-Committee of the Estate and Recreational Committee this will be Chaired by Cllr Ian Hamilton-Smith and members of the public who have an interest will be invited by the Clerk to Shepshed Town Council to sit on this sub-committee. It was also agreed that the dog

control, football and Projects Sub committees should continue with Councillors from all political persuasion sitting on them.

Loughborough school boosts its Ofsted ratingpupiLS, parents, staff and governors at thorpe acre Junior School are celebrating after government inspectors gave the school an improved ofsted rating. At its last inspection, the school was given a notice to improve but after much hard work the school has achieved

a satisfactory rating with good capacity for further improvement. Ofsted praised the progress made by pupils and the extent to which they enjoy their learning. The school’s inspection report says that pupils’ positive attitudes to learning ensure they listen carefully, help each other, and persevere with challenging tasks. Pupils’ behaviour is also said to have improved since the school’s last report. Ofsted said new staffing appointments have brought good teaching and lessons across the whole school. The head teacher and the rest of the senior leadership team were praised for successfully driving improvement at

the school, including motivating staff and accelerating pupils’ progress.

Local schools get a late present from Santa

the memBerS of Shepshed charnwood rotary club have been busy giving away the money collected last christmas with their Santa Float, and last week it was the turn of local schools to benefit from local generosity. The Rotarians wanted to support

projects in the areas where the money was donated and decided to approach the local primary schools to find out what would be appropriate. In the end it was decided to make

a donation to each school for them to put towards a project connected to the improvement of literacy.

The headteachers from Kegworth, Sutton Bonington and Hathern Primary Schools were at Kegworth School recently to each receive a cheque for £150 from Rotary President Roger Hutchinson.Donations were also made to

Long Whatton and Diseworth Primary schools.

LETTERIncinerator: an alternative viewi have read a lot about the incinerator and how residents of Shepshed are opposed to it but i feel that most of these are against it because of a fear of the unknown and i wonder how many of these residents have been able to see both sides of the debate. The waste industry is the second most regulated industry in the UK (behind

nuclear) and we have amongst the strictest monitoring regimes in Europe for incinerators. Gone are the days where waste is burnt with thick black smoke going into the atmosphere. Today’s incinerators are incredibly efficient with very little actually coming out of the chimney. In fact, if the arguments against the incinerator are based on environmental

grounds, then you should consider that there are more dioxins and pollution released into the air on 5th November (Guy Fawkes night) by all of the fireworks and bonfires across the UK than what all of the incinerators in the UK generate in a year. Another very important point to consider is ‘what are the alternatives?’

Experts suggest that the UK has around 7 years of Llandfill space (which themselves produce the greenhouse gas methane) so what will happen in 2018? If we don’t have the incinerator where will the waste go? Other technologies such as gasification and Mechanical Biological

Treatment are prohibitively expensive and relatively untested. It is illegal to export it and I don’t think residents will want to bury it in their own back yard or burn it in their garden. It is also worth knowing that it is a compulsory requirement that these new

incinerators have to use the waste as a fuel source to generate energy. Using the waste as a fuel will therefore prevent coal from being mined, transported and burned at power stations as could essentially generate our own. As the saying goes ‘there are two sides to every story’.

Five Dales WalkOn May 7th a group of seven did the Five Dales walk, starting from Millers Dale. (see right) It was a beautiful day, and the wildflowers (anemones, ransoms, orchids …) were amazing. We hope to arrange another walk later in the year.

Oxley with the école Jean Moulin, and St Botolph’s with école Charles de Gaulle.

Children have exchanged easter cards, and we hope for further developments.

Conversation GroupThere was a good turnout for our first French conversation group, brilliantly hosted by Alison on May 13th. We enjoyed food and drink, while talking (in French) about music, dance, and lots of things.

Latest News from Shepshed Camera Clubthe month of may saw the final clubroom meetings for the members of Shepshed camera club before the usual break until early September. it was a busy schedule though and included two competitions, a visiting speaker and the selection of prints for the annual exhibition in Shepshed Library commencing on 30th.august.The third league

competition of 2011, judged by Nigel Ward, LRPS, saw the themed subject, Feathered Friends, won by Phil Tapp with his print called “Young Starling.” He also took second

place and Rowland Price was third. The Open class this time was for digital projected images and Chris Coxon took first place with “Full Steam.” Malcolm Diaper was second and Ian Bradford third.The final meeting of

the month was for the Postcard Challenge” in which members produce prints in the style of

holiday postcards. rowland price won both the classes, Serious and Humorous, and also took third place in the former class. Brian Walbey took second place in that class and in the Humorous class alan Blood was second and peter harvey third.The Club’s website, http://www.shepshedcameraclub.co.uk/ will still

be active through the summer months and information regarding the Club’s activities commencing in the Autumn will be available there in due course.

of the senior scientists at the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.But in March last year the 2nd largest drug

company in the UK announced it would be closing its Loughborough site in 2011 and moving operations to Sweden. That decision left over 1000 staff facing redundancy or relocation. Dr Williams said: “I love my job and am very

News from Shepshed WIFor their June meeting Shepshed Wi welcomed Betty cawte who talked about Staunton harold. She spoke about

the people who had shaped the history and landscape and members learned someinteresting facts about the estate and its past, and about the chapel, founded in 1653, which is now looked after by the National Trust.

The name “Staunton” means “the stoney settlement” and there is evidence that there was a medieval village on the site. Staunton Harold Hall and most of the parish was owned by the Shirley family for over 500 years until 1954 when the hall was purchased by Group Captain Lord Cheshire and tunred into a home for people with disabilities. Now it is privately owned. President Lynne Diaper reported to members about the stall at the Oaks

Country Fair on Bank Holiday Monday. She said that inspite of the dreadful weather £150 was raised for WI funds by selling cakes, sweets and pastries and although it rained most of the day quite a few people turned out to support the whole event. The next meeting to be held at Christchurch Methodist Church on

Thursday 7th July at 7.30 pm will be a demonstration by glass artist claire Williamson and the August meeting on Thursday 4th August will be Pat North talking about her trip to India, illustrated with photographs. As usual visitors will be most welcome.

LETTERdear Sir,We, in the Shepshed Liberal democrats, would like to thank all of the residents of Shepshed who supported us in the may elections. Even though only two of our candidates were elected, we feel this

was quite good - despite all the adverse publicity we have received in most of the media. We will continue to fight for the return of a High Street bank to

Shepshed. However, there is one misnomer that we would like to point out that at the time of HSBC’s closure on 5th January 2007 the Liberal Democrats did not run Shepshed Town Council as stated to the contrary in another political party’s election leaflet. In that leaflet we were accused thus, “they allowed the only remaining bank in Shepshed to close – now they want to bring one back – we say that’s empty words”. We would like to set the record straight that when the last bank

shut on 5th January 2007 there were 7 Labour Town Councillors, 2 Liberal Democrats, 2 Conservatives and 4 Independent Councillors. Both the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Town Council were Labour Councillors. The Borough Councillors for Shepshed consisted of 3 Labour Councillors and 1 Liberal Democrat and the then County Councillor was also Labour. In fact it was a concerned resident - who was not a councillor - that fought this by mobilising support from businesses and residents in Shepshed and achieving a petition with 1400 signatures and national press and TV coverage.We will continue to do our best for Shepshed residents, and shall

look back on a very busy last four years, in which we achieved a lot for the community of Shepshed and are especially proud about our efforts in keeping the toilets open for the people of Shepshed. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all new councillors well in the years ahead.

due to a lack of staffing.But a team of volunteer water bailiffs have now been recruited to patrol Dishley

Pool which has 20 pegs available for anglers.councillor hilary Fryer, Charnwood Borough Council’s cabinet member for

Cleansing and Open Spaces, said: “Dishley Pool is a hidden treasure which not only boasts an amazing variety of wildlife but is also a superb venue for fishing.“We’re very pleased to be able to re-launch it just in time for the coarse fishing

season.”

a coarse fishing venue with day tickets available for both at £3.60 and season tickets at £40. One ticket will entitle anglers to fish both lakes. Tickets are available from local angling shops and Loughborough Leisure Centre on Browns Lane. Anglers will also need a valid rod

Rotary Club Of Shepshed NEWS

a hectic few weeks followed a relatively

relaxing period – “When was that?” someone asked. The club is busy, thank goodness,

and at the recent AGM we, amongst other things, recognised that some members of the club, over the years, have contributed a great deal of effort to further the aims of Rotary. Hon.Members who retired from the club some years ago. John atkin and albert Smith were made HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBERS. Two recently retiring members

Sidney Freckelton and ray Biling were also made HONORARY LIFETIME MEMBERS in recognition of their incredible commitment to the club in particular and to Rotary in general over many years. They are true Rotarians - always willing to help. On 23rd May the club

welcomed Sophie Stevens, fund-raiser for the D.L.&R Air Ambulance who gave a brilliant informative presentation about the organisation. All sorts of technical details about helicopters, pilots, doctors and other essential staff engaged in this vital activity. There

are, in a NORMAL day 3, 4 or 5 emergencies. The response time is usually 8 minutes, each incident flight costs about £1,500. The annual running costs are about £2,000,000. The club presented Sophie with a cheque for £1,304.56 - an amazing amount of money. This was the result of the Rotary Club working with mr. michael Wortley at his Magic Lantern show earlier in the year, reported in the April issue of The EYE. operating a charity stall at The Oaks

Church Spring Fair. The club is full of admiration for the organisers of this very popular event. Although it rained quite heavily at times, the supporters braved the weather and came along to experience the joys of the fair. The Rotary club had a stall, as usual, and although our takings were down we were able to swell the coffers of the fund which we use for local deserving causes. The photo on the right shows the Rotary Charity Stall being attended by Rotarians Janet Sinclair, Liz marshall and ngaire hall. They were three of the dozen or so Rotarians involved on the day. There was also an Australian visitor sheltering from the rain On Monday 6th June we had

as our guest speaker mr.adrian Stephenson, the headteacher of Shepshed High School, who gave an illuminating presentation on his school’s links with a school in the university town of Jima. Ethiopia. There is a strong link between S.H.S. and the Jima University School where lessons are taught through the medium of English. Staff from the two schools have undertaken exchange visits. The official language is Amharic. Along with English, Amharic and Arabic there are several regional languages. The adult literacy rate is about 42% and living conditions

outside the major towns could be described as basic. There are no plans to create a student exchange but the flow of information about a very different culture can only be beneficial to all involved. It was a most interesting presentation On Wednesday 8th June

members of the club led another visit to Drayton Manor Park- this time taking seven students from the ERP centre at Shepshed High School. “rotary Kids day out” is normally identified as the second Wednesday in June when over 28,000 disadvantaged children/students with their school carers/teaching support staff are

taken by Rotary clubs across the U.K. to one of over 100 venues such as Safari Parks, Theme parks, Zoos etc. An independent charity “KIDS OUT” is the only charity in the U.K. dedicated to bringing fun and happiness into the lives of disadvantaged children. On Thursday 9th. June we again

met our colleagues from the Rotary Club of Coalville for a “skittles evening” at The Odd House Snarestone. We enjoyed a buffet meal, plenty of sociable banter AND WE WON. 203 –200. Don’t ask me how we did it. Friday 10th June at

St. Botolph’s Church Shepshed we held a concert, principally in aid of our Youth Activities in the local schools. The St. Botolph’s School Choir, having gained an excellent reputation well and truly lived up to expectations. They were magnificent and credit must be given to all the staff for their commitment and to the parents for

their encouragement and support. We also had the very highly

regarded Garendon School Loughborough Wind Band under their teacher mr.norman morfill. The choir and the band have performed together several times before and make an ideal combination with varied choices of music.

This time we introduced the “something extra” not just to add variety but also to serve as a model for the young school choir singers. The something extra was the talented trio of ladies known as the “Doh, Re, Mi singers”. Janet clitheroe, Sue cooke and Liz muller. They were accompanied by Peter Finch and sang songs to suit a wide variety of tastes.

Most enjoyable. The whole evening was great

success. Thanks to all involved.We are most grateful for the

sponsorship and continuing support of the Shepshed Building Society.

I got a job as a historian, but I soon realised there was not future in it.

Too much ambition results in promotion to a job you can’t do.

Sing a new song!We are certainly singing ‘a new song’ at christchurch methodist. On Sunday 29th May, alongside hymns hundreds of years old was one hot

off the press, literally, as it was photocopied the very morning it was sung for the first time. A hymn of praise and thanksgiving for music and song, written by David Stevenson, was used to mark the 80th birthday of Keith Bailey, who has been the Organist and Choirmaster at Christchurch since the 1950s. As well as acknowledging Keith’s

valuable contribution to church life over the years, ‘We praise with grateful hearts,’ also celebrated the 14th birthday of Mattie Unwin, who has been a Junior Chorister for seven years. The evening service ended with a buffet laid on by the Senior Choir.David has written a number of

hymns, and has been published in varied hymn collections. One recent composition has even been performed at Methodist Central Hall in London.

mp For Loughborough nicky morgan met with rniB and the royal college of ophthalmologists at a parliamentary reception last month, to learn more about the availability of cataract surgery to people in Loughborough.Mrs Morgan was briefed about

how cataract surgery is safe and has been shown to be both cost effective and clinically effective. Both RNIB and Royal College representatives raised their concerns with Mrs Morgan that Leicestershire County & Rutland PCT is currently reviewing their policy on access to cataract treatment. The RNIB outlined that any delay

could mean that many people in the area could have to wait some time longer before surgery, potentially having lost a significant amount of sight, with a serious impact on their quality of life.“The RNIB concern over the

potential impact of Leicestershire County & Rutland PCT restrictive policy for cataract surgery is quite worrying,” Mrs Morgan said. “Older people in our area, who

would benefit from this cost-effective surgery, could potentially be forced to wait for it while their vision deteriorates. I have contacted LC&R PCT asking for a meeting to discuss this and to be kept fully informed about the progress of their review into eligibility for cataract treatment. I am aware that excellent progress has been made since the cataract waiting time initiative was introduced in 2002 and I intend to support RNIB with their efforts in maintaining this,” she said.Steve Winyard, Head of

Campaigns at RNIB, said “Delaying cataract operations is a false economy. A patient whose sight is restricted by a cataract will, at some stage, absolutely need surgery.“

County Councillor’s ColumnFrom Christine RadfordaS your county councillor, i am always on hand to try and deal with any concerns you may have about services provided by Leicestershire county council.It is usual in May/June to have a move around

regarding Committees which Councillors sit on. I am pleased to say that I can still represent Shepshed on the Fire Service Authority and would like to report that the Fire Service have extended the use of part of the fire station offices in Shepshed to the Police. This will not unfortunately involve a front desk, but this was not used very much by local residents due to the restricted opening hours, but it will be made available to our local beat bobbies to use, which will mean a continued regular police presence in Shepshed.I am still on the Board of Trustees for Bradgate Park which I know is well

used by the residents of Shepshed. The new café it is hoped will be open in the Autumn, and this facility will be easily reached from the car park in Newtown Linford.I also continue to sit on the Development Control Board, Children and

Young People’s Committee, which looks after the welfare of Children in Care Homes. I continue to take the opportunity offered for extra training which will help me deal with concerns raised by residents. I hold regular meetings in Shepshed with officers from County Highways

in the hope of getting some of the trouble spots in Shepshed sorted, such as the junction of Paterson Place and Brook Street, the entrance to Weavers Way and the junction of Oakley Road, Belton Street and Tickow Lane.I have to report that unfortunately the Environment Agency have granted

a Permit to Biffa for an Energy from Waste Incinerator to be sited at Newhurst Quarry, but Biffa still have to gain planning permission for the Incinerator. I hold a monthly surgery at the Council Offices in Shepshed between 10-11

Chainsaw sculptor gives trees a new lease of life!visitors to one of Leicestershire’s flagship country parks will be able to watch as a professional sculptor uses a chainsaw to create large scale wooden sculptures right before their eyes! Nottingham based sculptor Peter Leadbeater started creating his

masterpieces at Beacon Hill Country Park in mid-June. Some of the wood he is using will be sourced from actual trees that have died naturally within the country park and Peter will be giving them a new lease of life as sculptures.Members of the public are invited to come along to the country park and

watch as over time, each piece takes shape and is carved into its unique style.Peter is working with Leicestershire County Council to make a number of

different sculptures that will be permanently displayed at Beacon Hill for visitors to enjoy. They will be themed around the parks extraordinary environment and wildlife. Staff and volunteers at the country

park have been closely involved in the project and have contributed towards ideas for the theme that each of the pieces will take. The themes include:

The parks history, geology, archaeology and historic wildlifeAnimals and wildlife in the parkLarge scale representations of seeds and leavesLocal legends

When completed the sculptures will be located within the wonderful surroundings of the park. It is anticipated that all of them will be completed by next spring. Byron rhodes, Leicestershire

County Council’s Cabinet Member for Country Parks said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for people to watch in real time as these fascinating sculptures come to life and recreate the history, wildlife and nature at Beacon Hill. We are fortunate enough to be able to obtain these sculptures and to display them within the beautiful surroundings of the country park. Beacon Hill has always been a popular destination for visitors and these new sculptures will add to the vast range of things for people to see and do whilst at the park.”Peter Leadbeater added: “I feel very lucky to be able to draw inspiration

for my work from such a diverse, interesting and stunning location and I am looking forward to getting started on making a contribution for visitors to enjoy.”This year the Wood Fair is taking place on 29th August and Peter’s
