John Petschel Managing DirectorAPS Innovations

Awarded the Inaugural Plastics Industry Award for Excellence

Mr. John Petschel has been awarded the PlastixANZ-Plastics Pioneers Plastics Industry Award for Excellence. Mr. Petschel accepted his award at a Cocktail Reception held to coincide with AUSPLAS 2011 at Melbourne Exhibition & Convention Centre.

Techspan History

Techspan was incorporated in 1979 by the late Frank John Fastnedge.Frank was an electronics engineer and in the 1950s and 60s he worked on industrial high frequency generators for induction heating and hardening of metals, forming and welding PVC and polyurethane materials. This led to an interest in plastic welding, and when Frank established Techspan in 1979, one of the first products was a hand-held hot air plastic welder. With the passage of time, dedication and persistence, the product range has improved and grown, and we now have 5 core product lines : plastic injection moulding machines, plastic welding equipment, ultrasonic equipment, industrial printing systems, and process heating equipment.Techspan Industrial Printing Systems was incorporated in 1996. TIPS supplies a range of industrial printing, marking and coding equipment, and operates a high speed precision converting plant for the production of Thermal Transfer Ribbons - the consumable used in thermal printers.Techspan Australia Pty Ltd was incorporated in 2001.Today, Techspan Group is still a 100% privately owned (family) company, with warehousing in Sydney Australia, and Auckland New Zealand.... You  have  to  make  products  overseas  to  be  profitable....?

....  WRONG  Many  Australians  are  of  the  mistaken  assumption  that  you  MUST  go  overseas  to  make  products  cheaply    but  smart  local  manufacturers  are  proving  otherwise.

With  large  retail  chains  such  as  supermarkets  and  hardware  stores  stocking  an  ever  increasing  number  of  cheaper  priced,  overseas  manufactured  goods,  it  is  not  hard  to  see  why  it  could  be  a  common  belief  among  Australians  that  you  cannot  profitably  manufacture  locally.

The  perception  is  often  sector  is  in  dire  straits,  and  that  our  only  alternative  is  to  divert  our  attentions  to   high-‐tech  sectors  to  save  ourselves.    Manufacturers  assume  the  only  way  to  make  a  profit  is  to  spend  as  little  as  possible  on  design  and  tooling  and  then  have  the  manufacturing  done  offshore.

...China  should  be  used  where  appropriate....

Astute  Australian  manufacturers  have  recognised  that  manufacturing  in  China  should  be  used  where  appropriate,  but  is  not  a  one-‐size-‐fits-‐all  formula  for  success.    Without  examining  each  project  on  its  own  merits  it  is  impossible  to  determine  the   optimal  approach  to  maximise  ROI.

It  is  surprising  the  number  of  times  when  a  project  is  examined  to  determine  true  client  ROI  that  the  work  proves  to  be  cheaper  when  carried  out  locally.

Financial  Model  Data  shows  that  for  low  volume,  low  complexity  products  there  are  little  savings  to  be  made  by  looking  offshore.    As  the  production  volume  rises  to  suitable  levels  and  complexity  increases,  there  exists  a

benefits  of  cheaper  labour  costs.

There  is    in  thinking  that  volumes  and  complexities  continuing  to  rise  will  result  in  increased  savings  manufacturing  out  of  the  country,  when  in  fact  the  opposite  is  true.

A  product  designed  to  be  made  cheaply  can  be  made  cheaply  anywhere  in  the  world    material  costs  are  much  the  same  the  world  over.    With  sufficient  volumes,  investment  in  automation  far  outweighs  the  costs  associated  with  sourcing  the  cheaper  labour  in  countries  such  as  China.

                                   local

offshore

local

one  such  company  taking  up  the  challenge  to  create  local  industry  growth  from  adversity.

When  a  valued  customer  returned  to  APS  with  a  design  requirement  for  a  new  product,  it  was  perceived  that  it  would  be  necessary  to  go  to  China  to  be  competitive.    The  reality  was  after  proper  analysis  the  facts  showed  that  it  could  be  made  in  Australia  more  profitably  and  more  conveniently.

With  a  clear  focus  on  client  ROI,  the  product  was  designed  to  take  advantage  of  automation,  and  cycle  quickly  with  a  minimum  shot  weight  -‐  all  without  sacrificing  aesthetic  style  or  product  strength.    The  tooling  was  designed  and  specified  locally,  and  sourced  through  an  Australian  tool  maker  with  a  Chinese  tool  shop,  using  a  hybrid  program  to  allow  local  support  and  control  quality  at  an  optimal  price.

....  and  this  budget  consumer  item  has  become  their  most  successful  product  to  date  and  retails  for  less  than  $2.

Trade attendance figures for Ausplas 2011, Australia’s national trade show for the plastics industry have shown an increase of 57% over attendances at the last event in October 2008.

Ausplas was presented in Melbourne in late May alongside two other major industry trade shows, National Manufacturing Week and Austech, with the three shows occupying the entire 30,000 square meter Melbourne Exhibition Centre.

Busiest of the four days was Thursday with 2339 visits, with steady flows on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, for a total of 5669* compared with 3606 for Ausplas 2008,which coincided with the beginning of the GFC in that year. These figures do not include visits from the other two adjacent trade shows as “cross over” attendances were not recorded.

Attendance across the three shows was just over 13,000 with the NMW and Austech figures showing an increase of 28% over the previous Melbourne show attendances in 2009.

Ausplas exhibitors have reported pleasing sales generation opportunities with several multi million dollar closures claimed. Exhibitors in the new plastics “fabrication” category were especially encouraged by the new business opportunities.

The Director of Cut to Size Plastics Pty Ltd endorsed Ausplas as being “one of the best exhibitions I have been involved with in 30 years- a credit to the huge number of attendees ”

Discussions between three show organisers will now take place to firm up arrangements for the next co location, expected to be in Sydney in 2014.Ausplas has not been held in Sydney since 1990.

(*denotes once per day exhibition visits to include repeat visits. Total number of visitors was 5128.)

Don’t  be  a  Cardboard  Cut  Out  –

if  You  Want  More  CustomersBy Scott Bywater

Do you want to know what is perhaps the most powerful – yet overlooked – word in marketing and advertising?

While words like headlines, testing & measuring, reach and frequency, target market, etc. are all thrown around like sausages on a BBQ – and are certainly important…

The one word many marketers forget is…

AUTHENTICITY

That’s right – being real… being human… exposing your faults…Instead, you end up with this bland, tasteless advertising that…

NOBODY GIVES A STUFF ABOUT

Just look at those letters you get from your credit card company.

Forget that – just open up your newspaper and take a look inside…

There’s no authentic ads in there.

Open up your email inbox - and it lacks authenticity.

Don’t be a cardboard cut-out.

Instead, be human…

Remember, friends are real with each other…

So to treat your customers like friends.

Tell them your faults. Expose how you feel about things. Show themyou’re not perfect. Feature your photo in your ads. Speak from your heart.

If you do that, you’ll connect more – and that will give you a unique sellingProposition that cannot be replicated.

Why? Because there’s nobody quite like you

Do you want to learn the easiest way to get more customers fast? Leading advertising copywriter, Scott Bywater, has just completed his brand new guide "7 Ways to Get More Customers" where he

outline everything so it's as easy as 1, 2... 3. Download it for free by visiting: www.copywritingthatsells.com.au

Why Hilton Vacuum`s was born...

AN EXPENSIVE PROBLEM COSTING CLEANERS TOO MUCH MONEY[/Andy Andersons Industrial Cleaning was facing a problem, several in fact. While they had plenty of work, the jobs were taking too long and costing too much to complete. Thousands were spent on `big name` industrial vacuums, however they simply could not cope with the demands of the work. The vacuums started out fine but very quickly the fine dust would block up the filters and restrict airflow. The hassles were to painful: stopping a job to shake the filters every 10 or 20 minutes, empty the machine every 1/2 hour, or order a replacement for a burnt out motor every other week. A better solution was needed...MORE

One button changed everything! It  used  to  be  so  easy.

Get  a  website.  Get  on  Google.

After  that  you  just  wait  for  the  leads  and  enquiries  to  pour  in.  Yeah  right!

Unfortunately  your  potential  customers  now  expect  a  lot  more  than  your  standard  website.  If  you re  serious  about  getting  more  business  from  the  Internet,  you ve  got  to  see  your  website  the  way  your  customers  do.

Is  there  too  much  going  on?

Does  your  website  have  lots  of  buttons  and  links  competing  for  attention?

Is  there  a  simple  message  and  clear  direction  for  what  you  should  do  now  that  you re  on  the  website?

Most  websites  fail  to  give  their  audience  a  clear  sales  message,  and  the  main  reason  for  this  is  because  everyone  is  doing  the  same  thing.

For  a  select  group  of  business  owners,  they  are  seeing  a  rise  in  enquiries  because  of  a  secret  weapon  most  businesses  have  not  yet  taken  advantage  of.

Video.

An  effective  video  on  your  website  can  work  as  a  high  impact  sales  presentation  working  24/7  to  best  present  your  business  to  the  world.

Video  has  been  proven  time  and  time  again  to  increase  enquiries  and  generate  a  higher  response  from  website  visitors.

So  the  question  is,  are  you  one  of  those  business  owners  with  a  website  that  looks  like  everyone  else s?  Or  do  you  have  a  well  crafted  sales  message,  in  video,  dominating  your  home  page  and  converting  more  eyeballs  into  phone  calls  and  email  enquiries?

If  you re  interested  in  how  video  can  work  for  your  business  online,  check  out  this  free  guide  I ve  put  together  for  you  at  http://myvids.com.au/freepack

Cash FlowProvided by Bob MontgomeryDirector, Corporate Finance

Cash flow is the life blood of any successful business, particularly in a manufacturing environment. A restricted or uncertain cash flow is damaging to relationships with customers and suppliers as well as restricting growth.

How businesses address this cash flow issues varies from case to case but invariably it involves borrowing by means of an overdraft or line of credit from a banker. These types of facilities almost always require real estate security and once in place have limits and lack flexibility.

There is an alternative, Debtor Finance, this use the assets within the business to generate the necessary cash flow while freeing personal assets from encumbrances.

Debtor Finance is a flexible business funding solution designed to improve cash flow by releasing working capital from outstanding invoices and inject it back into the business quickly, efficiently and cost effectively. With stronger cash flow and a flexible source of funding, the business is free of funding constraints and can focus on management and growth.

Unlike an overdraft or other line of credit, Debtor Finance will grow in line with the business’ sales, making it ideal for supporting growing businesses.

It is also a very useful tool for business ownership transitions where personal real estate assets of a departing party were previously used as security to a bank. This can be released without disruption to liquidity or cash flow.

There are many variations of the Debtor Finance product. If what I have outlined above is of interest to you I would be happy to meet personally and expand on both the basic product and tailor a model that parcelled your particular situation.
