Greetings Rotary Friends!!! I am indeed very honored and humbled by the opportunity I have been given to serve as your District Governor for the year 2010- 2011. It is a great responsibil- ity that I take very seriously knowing that together we can Build Communities and Bridge Continents. It is also my honor to be a member of the Sweetwater Rotary . Rotary is very fortunate to have an outstanding leader such as Ray Klinginsmith to serve as our Rotary International President for 2010-2011. His theme this year is Building Com- munities - Bridging Continents. A theme that talks about the work of Rotarians. I hope that this theme will encourage your clubs to think outside the box in order to make Rotary, our district, and our clubs Bigger, Better, and Bolder. I hope that each of you will consider in joining with others within and out- side our district to work on new and exciting projects. I know that as Lucy and I begin our journey in August to visit the clubs in the district we will be amazed by the amount of work you have done on your projects to better your communities and the world in general. I look forward to learn about your projects, your goals, and share in the fellowship that Rotarians in our district are known for. We as Rotarians have the unique opportunity to serve and make a difference in the life of those less fortunate. As we move into our new rotary year I would like to see a revitalization of our district membership and a record breaking year of giving to our Rotary foundation. Attracting new members is something each and every Rotarian in our district can do to impact the future of our district and Rotary International. It cost nothing to extend our hands in fellowship and share the ideas of Rotary service with those in our com- munities. Greetings Rotary Friends!!!

I am indeed very honored and humbled by the opportunity I have been given to serve as your District Governor for the year 2010-2011. It is a great responsibil-ity that I take very seriously knowing that together we can Build Communities and Bridge Continents. It is also my honor to be a member of the Sweetwater Rotary .

Rotary is very fortunate to have an outstanding leader such as Ray Klinginsmith to serve as our Rotary International President for 2010-2011. His theme this year is Building Com-munities - Bridging Continents. A theme that talks about the work of Rotarians. I hope that this theme will encourage your clubs to think outside the box in order to make Rotary, our district, and our clubs Bigger, Better, and Bolder. I hope that each of you will consider in joining with others within and out-side our district to work on new and exciting projects.

It cost nothing to extend our hands in fellowship and share the ideas of Rotary service with those in our com-munities.

When you make a contribution to the Every Rotarian, Every Year program you help change the world. All money raised through EREY goes to the Annual Programs Fund, which supports The Rotary Foundation's humanitarian and educa-tional programs. Become a sustaining member by contribut-ing $100.00 a year to the EREY program. That’s less than $9.00 a month.

We must also strive forward with our promise to the children of the world of eradicating polio. I would like to see each club in our district contribute to this worthy cause and help meet the challenge made by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

PDG Jim Cole left Lucy and me with a new high level of standards to follow. I am very appreciative of all the support, guidance, advice , and above all the friendship PDG Jim has given Lucy and me.

I would also like to thank all those PDG’s who encour-aged me with their words of wisdom to follow in their foot-steps. We are so fortunate to have among us great leaders who share the dream to make the world a better place for our future generation.

Best wishes as we begin this Rotary year together building communities and bridging continents.

Donors of $1,000 or more to the Annual Programs Fund, PolioPlus, or the Humanitarian Grants Program, or people who have that amount con-tributed in their name, can be recog-nized as Paul Harris Fellows. Each new Paul Harris Fellow receives a com-memorative certificate and a pin.

MAKE SOMEONE ELSE A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW

Friends, family, spouses, and colleagues make so many valuable contributions to your life. You can give back by donating $1,000 to the Foundation’s Annual Programs Fund in their honor, which will earn them Paul Harris Fellow Recogni-tion.

You also may give another person recognition points, which are accumulated when Paul Harris Fellows make per-sonal contributions in addition to their initial gift of $1,000. As donors increase their recognition levels through new gifts, they accrue points, which don’t expire and can be transferred to other donors’ accounts. If 1,000 points are transferred to one person, that individual becomes a Paul Harris Fellow.

The points also can be split between multiple ac-counts. For example, if 1,000 recognition points were divided equally between two people who had not previously contrib-uted to the Foundation, each of them would need to contrib-ute only an additional $500 to become Paul Harris Fellows.

As of 1 July 2009, points may only be transferred in transactions of 100 points or more, and individual donors will be the only ones authorized to transfer points from their indi-vidual accounts. Club presidents and district governors may no longer authorize point transfers for other individuals, but they may continue to authorize transfers from their club or district accounts. Also, as of 1 July 2009, individual points will expire upon the death of the donor, or the death of the surviving spouse of a Major Donor. (Major Donors have contributed $10,000 or more to the Foundation.)

Donors who are already Paul Harris Fellows become Multiple Paul Harris Fellows if 1,000 points are added to their account. To transfer points, use the Recognition and Transfer Request form (PDF).

PLAINVIEW CLUB

Congratulations to these Plainview Club Rotarians for this wonderful accomplishment. Their contribution to the Ro-tary Foundation of Rotary International is improving living conditions, and providing educational opportunities for young people somewhere in the world. I encourage you to wear the Paul Harris Fellow Pin to all Rotary events, as a symbol of your appreciation and support of the programs of the Rotary Foun-dation.

NEW ROTARY CLUB MEMBERS

WELCOME!

New members join Rotary Clubs to improve the qual-ity of life in their communities and make a difference in the world. For more than a century, Rotary clubs have been pro-viding vital service within their local communities throughout the world. Their achievements are the result of dedicated member action and participation. Let’s all grow our club mem-bership by a minimum net increase of one member per club.

The Rotary themes mostly speak to Rotarians who understand what to expect. It explains what Rotary does. Some themes did not seek to explain Rotary to non-Rotarians.

The 2010-2011 theme explains to non-Rotarians what rotary is, and what rotary accomplishes. It validates what Ro-tarians have been doing since 1905 to our current rotary mem-bers. The theme expresses the contribution of Rotarians in the local communities and around the world.

Building Communities - Bridging Continents, these four words describe Rotary’s current mission and highlight the achievements. Rotary is best in linking people of goodwill and in gaining their support to make the world a better place.

We need to focus our best efforts on encouraging our clubs to do what we as Rotarians are passionate about, and on what we are good at doing, which is Building Communities and Bridging Continents.

It is my desire to carry out the traditions established by my predecessors of bringing new and innovating ideas to our district. With your commitment to serve I am sure that together we can accomplish the 2010-2011 goals set forth by RI President Ray Klinginsmith. The journey that awaits each and every one of us will be filled with challenges that will help us understand the import role that Rotary plays in our local communities and around the world. Listed are the objectives and goals for 2010-2011: 1. Membership - a minimum net membership increase of one member per club, to maintain retention rate of 80 percent, a n d

to add at least two new clubs. 2. The Rotary Foundation - support our foundation with a per capita giving of $100.00 per Rotarian. Assist in the promise to

eradicate polio. 3. 2010-2011 Presidential Citation - each club in the district to achieve this recognition. 4. Major Emphasis (Water, Hunger, Health, and Literacy) - each club to have a service project on one of these areas of major

emphasis.

This month’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants.

It is called the Paul Har-ris Memorial Road, a half mile long concrete walkway which helps the villagers of Nabapally, India keep from being isolated during the rainy season. It is also one of the many infrastruc-ture projects supported by a Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grant that has brought pros-perity to a rural corner of India. Sponsored by the Rotary Clubs

of Calcutta Metropolitan, India and Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada the grant has supported schools, micro credit loans, wells, toilets, and a health clinic for several communities.

The road is not just a way out of isolation it is a road to a brighter future – thanks to Rotary.

“Rotary must not content itself with being anything less than a move-ment affecting the lives of all men and women; its requirements are so simple, its doctrines so universally acceptable that its sponsors are not visionary in thinking of Rotary as an all pervading influence.” Paul Harris 1928

I’ve attached to this month’s newsletter a wonderful project idea, Trick or Treat with Pennies for Po-lio, from District 5110 in Oregon involving school children helping in the eradication of polio. Please read and let me know if

your club will participate in a similar program. You may also find additional information about the project on this website: http://penniesforpolio.org.

This is a simple way of getting your community involved in the End Polio Now campaign and in raising the $2,000.00

goal that Rotary International has requested for all the club. It is good Public Relations and it will make your community aware of the work that Rotary clubs do.

ROTARY FOUNDATION THOUGHT WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID

RI STRATEGIC PLAN GOES INTO EFFECT

With the start of the new Rotary year, Rotary Interna-tional’s revised Strategic Plan officially goes into effect.

The plan comprises three priorities, all of equal impor-tance to Rotary's future: support and strengthen clubs, focus and increase humanitarian service, and enhance public image and awareness. These priorities stem from Rotary’s core val-ues of service, leadership, diversity, integrity, and fellowship.

Rotary clubs can use the priorities in the RI Strategic Plan as a basis for developing their own plans, tailored to their size of their club, the skills of their members, and the needs of the communities they serve.

My first convention and what a wonderful and memorable experience it was. All the speakers were very inspirational. This event makes me realize just how much good Rotary does around the world. The city of Montreal was just amazing with its buildings, people, food, and things to see and do. It was great to see Rotarians from our district. I hope that for next year’s Inter-national Convention we will have more Rotarians from our district than in any past conventions. Enjoy the pictures.

Every time you induct a new member into your club, send me their name. Every time a Rotarian in your club be-comes a Paul Harris Fellow or a Multi-Level Paul Harris Fellow, tell me about it. Major Donors, Benefactors, Bequest Society Members... Let me know of the accomplishments of individual Rotarians. After all, this is your District 5730 Newsletter and it’s about the service of those dedicated to bringing a ray of hope on a dark cloudy day.
