Cost: Mbrs-$10.00 Non-Mbrs-$20.00

Volunteers Needed! We need help in making the ―Diversity of America‖ event a success.

We will have 5 round tables specifically set up for regions around the world: North America, Asia, Europe, Central & South America and the Middle East. We need one person for each of these tables to be responsible for putting together an informative and eye catching display from those areas. It can be photos, books, items from the countries or areas. You can also bring something sweet (easy to serve in small portions) to share at those tables. We have already spoken to some people that can loan some items for these tables but can't physically be there. I can pass these names on to whoever takes on each table.

We need to have these people come in at 9:00am on the 11th of August to set up their display. Flat Creek will have the tables set up for us the day before.

Please remember we are working with no budget and using our resources to make this a successful membership drive luncheon and program. This is a great time to bring a guest and show them more of what value our great board has to offer.

Any and all help is much appreciated!

Thank you, Veronica Bangsboll

CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT in Honor of RYAN BLOYD August 1, 2009

7:30am Breakfast & Range Balls ● 8:00am Shot Gun Start

Four Man Scramble ● Auction & Lunch following round Fox Creek, 1501 Windy Hill Road

Ryan’s Story

In September 2008, Ryan contracted a blood infection which caused a brain aneurysm to rupture, followed by a stroke. Being in a coma for six weeks at Emory University Hospital’s Neuro ICU, he was given about a 20% chance to survive and 10 % chance to walk again. In late October, doctors performed brain bypass surgery, which was successful with a few complications. This facility saved his life. In November, Ryan entered Shepherd Center’s Acquired Brain Unit for healing and therapy. His right arm and leg were physically challenged. He was discharged in mid December and began the day program at Shepherd Pathways. These two facilities have brought Ryan from not being able to lift his head to walking and strengthening his arm. Although Ryan’s speech and understanding has progressed very well, his brain is working hard to get his thoughts from his brain into words, so speech is his biggest challenge at this point. The current plan is for him to attend an intensive speech therapy facility in either Michigan or Florida for six weeks to really boost his communication skills. Ryan’s therapists say he is about the hardest working client they have had, and his doctors at Emory and Shepherd are amazed at his determination and progress. His wit and personality are back; he truly is a miracle.

Every donation counts

Because of Ryan’s great progress, his doctors have recommended that he attend a specialized speech rehab program to improve cognitive and motor skills, in hopes that this will complete the rehabilitation process. They will use tools such as presentations from sales meetings to familiarize Ryan with industry knowledge. Because these programs can be costly, Ryan, his family, friends and co-workers all appreciate any contributions. The contributions from this tournament will enable Ryan to complete the speech rehabilitation program. Thanks in advance for your compassion and participation.

Safety is a Year-Round Priority for REALTORS®

NAR is committed to help educate and empower every one of our 1.3 million members to ensure that they make good choices and practice personal safety on the job.

Look For REALTORS® Safety Tips in each upcoming issue of the Friday Facts.

Consider learning self-defense. The best way to find a good self-defense class is to learn what is available, and then make a decision. Many health clubs, martial arts studios and community colleges offer

some type of class. You can also ask your fellow REALTORS®, friends and family if they have taken a self-defense class that they would recommend. Park smart. When showing property or meeting someone, park your car in front of the property rather than in the driveway. You will avoid having your car blocked in, you’ll have an easier time escaping in your vehicle, and you will attract lots of attention running and screaming to your car at the curb area.

Hints & Tips Website Images

JPG files are best for photographs or art with gradient tints.

GIF images are best for online art (cartoon-like drawings, text

rendered as an image, artwork with flat areas of color).

Images should be saved to the exact size you want them to be

viewed on the web.

Do not resize images using size attributes in your HTML code or

FrontPage. Taking a large image and having it display at a smaller size not only slows down loading times but also distorts your image.

Final web images should be saved same size at 72 pixels per inch

resolution.

An ALT tag should be used for each picture. Many search engines

index these tags. The HTML for inserting ALT text is: <img src="filename.gif" alt="Alternative description goes here">

The following letter was written by HBAG Member, Rick Porter and submitted by Sandra Boda, Executive Officer of HBA of

Midwest Georgia. She wanted to share it because it is so heartfelt and so true. It is a beautiful reminder of why people buy ―homes‖.

LET’S GO HOME By Rick Porter There are few more comforting phrases. I recently sold the house I grew up in, but I didn’t sell the home. I was about 8 years old when we moved into the house. It was a mansion!!! My two sisters and I all shared the same bedroom in our previous home, but now we got to spread out a little bit. We had two whole bathrooms in the house!! And what a front yard. It was flat with no trees---a ball field right there! My father must have thrown a thousand pitches to me in that front yard and I bet I kicked a hundred winning field goals. Then we would sit on the front porch and rest. My father spent a lot of time rocking on the front porch after work. He never said much, but would just sit and rock. He would play a ―name that car‖ game with me.

He knew a lot about cars---or so I thought.

On our first Christmas, my mother and I wrapped red ribbon around the columns on the porch. They were beautiful---looked just like candy canes. Especially with the tree glowing right behind them in the front window. My sisters were older, but Santa kept coming for many years. I started riding horses when I was about 12, and one year I got a real saddle of my own for Christmas!! My mother and sisters pulled a trick on me and I didn’t even know that the big present was for me until Christmas morning. I really liked egg sandwiches for breakfast. It’s funny. I’m sure we all had problems getting dressed in the morning, but I don’t remember it. I do remember breakfast, though. My mother liked butter, and put plenty on the bread before the eggs. I wish she could make me one now. The Russians were a big threat back then. They set up missiles in Cuba, and my father was concerned. I don’t really remember being scared, but my father wanted to be safe so he built a bomb shelter under the patio of the house. It was really dark in there,

though, since he never quite finished it to his plan. The Russians didn’t really scare me, but that dark place did. It’s still there---almost cost us a sale because it had some water in it. I had my first date while I lived there. I fell in love there, and got my first broken heart there. I remember them both. I brought me Senior Prom date to that house to see my Mother before the big event. She was pretty. She still is. You see, we got married and bought the house from my parents when they wanted to move further from the city. We had our kids in that house, and it became their home, just like it is my home. You see, homes don’t get bought and sold, houses do. I’ve been building houses for over 30 years. I’ve sold most of them—thousands of them. I hope that every one of them became a home, because that’s what is neat about my business. We’re in a tough economy right now, and it’s hard to sell houses. I wonder if it would be as hard to sell homes? Our minds are cluttered with all the talk about the value of houses, and what we should offer and what we should take and where the bottom is. It must not be much fun these days to buy a house—to imagine where the bed will fit, to listen to strange birds on the deck early in the morning, to taste the cookies that could be cooked in that magnificent kitchen, to hear the laughter when our favorite show comes on, to help a young man tie a tie, to pick the perfect fabric for curtains, to make

the house a home. And that’s the real tragedy in the housing world today. We’re taking away the fun of buying a home by talking so much about houses. So what can I do? All anybody wants to talk about is price and deals. Except me, and maybe you. And then maybe someone else. And then maybe someone else. And then maybe the word gets around. We want to help you find a home. The path out of the wilderness starts with one step, and I think I’ll take it. We’re not in the house selling business, we’re in the home selling business. And home is where the heart is, if we put the heart back in it. Sure it’s a lot of money and it’s scary and risky, but let’s take on the burden of the business so the customers can get back to creating homes. How can we make it more fun, with more heart and less head? We’re not investors in pork futures; we’re creating homes for families of all types and descriptions. This is the place where they will make egg sandwiches. They will cry here, and laugh here, and love here. Their hearts will sing here, and hurt here. It will be beautiful, it will be a home. Will they make some money on it? They might---always have over time. But, very few buy houses to make money, they buy houses to create homes. I’m not hearing much about that in the news these days, nor is anyone else. I’m sure folks are a bit confused. I would be if I didn’t have my home in my heart. I’ll never sell it, not for any price to any body. Houses get bigger and get smaller, go up in price and go down in price, but homes never lose value. What a great investment!!! Porter is President of Richport Properties, Inc. and a Lecturer in the School of Building Construction at Georgia Tech.
