Fifteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time July 16, 2017

I have extended an invitation to Rev. Bob Hasenkamp to come to our parish on the weekend of July 22--23, 2017. Father Hasenkamp will speak to you about the work being done by Unbound

(previously known as CFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 19 developing countries since 1981—empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. Unbound’s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encourages that person. With a monthly contribution, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. Please join me in welcoming Father Hasenkamp to our parish. We still have the August 5--6 dates as our first weekend at the new church. To help prepare for that special weekend we are having an Open House at the new church on Sunday, July 30 from 1:00-3:00 pm. This will be an ideal time to not only see this beautiful new church but also familiarize yourself with the parking lots, building entrances, bathrooms, etc…...please stop by. Fr. Vitali left Friday for his annual trip to Alaska, where he will reside at a parish in the North Pole (not the top of the world but a Fairbanks suburb) and serve there while the pastor travels to remote Alaskan villages, followed by his vacation. Father will be there for six weeks. I am leaving today for a short vacation in the Ozarks. I’ll be back Thursday afternoon. Pray that God will keep Fr. Vitali, and me safe. Know that I will pray for you. May God bless all of you. Father Hambrough

Please note the change in the daily Mass schedule. Beginning Friday, July 21, daily Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 a.m. only. This time change will be in effect until Labor Day.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THERE WILL NOT BE MASS THE FIRST FOUR DAYS OF THIS WEEK, MONDAY—THURSDAY. THERE WILL BE A COMMUNION SERVICE EACH DAY AT 7:30 A.M. LED BY DEACON ALLEN BOEDEKER FROM ST. ANDREW PARISH.

Finally, we will not have Eucharistic Adoration this week. Adoration will resume on July 24th.

St. Mark Girl Scout Troop 4 will be having a Car Wash at Immaculate Heart of Mary on Sunday, July 30th beginning

at 8:00 am and continuing after all Masses. Come out and show your

support as they are raising funds for an 8th grade Girl Scout trip. Thank you!

A note to Fr. Hambrough from the Affton Christian Food Pantry:

“May the blessing of God be upon you. I am writing to thank you for your recent gift, and for all you do to care for those in need. Thank you! The good people of St. Mark’s collected 847 food and personal care items, and donated $1,570 in cash and checks toward our mission. What a blessing! With your help, we are able to feed all who need help in Affton this summer. Your donation means we can provide food for many families for we see more families needing assistance as the summer heat rises. Fr. Hambrough and ALL at St. Marks, your gift makes a real difference right here in Affton, every day! Thank you!” Jennifer Meehan ~ Executive Director, Affton Christian Food Pantry

We welcome to our faith and to our parish Aubrey Marie Lehmkuhl, daughter of Andrew and Nicole Lehmkuhl, who was baptized last week. May God

bless and guide Aubrey and her family as they journey with Christ to the Kingdom.

We offer prayers and congratulations to Christopher Ian McClay and Anna Alicia Martinez who last week celebrated the Sacrament of Matrimony in our

church. May God bless in many ways Christopher and Anna as they together bring to others the love of Christ.

RCIA - Our Journey in Faith

RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, at St. Mark Catholic Church is a Journey in Faith in which men and women become full members of the Catholic Church. (St. Mark Church also offers these classes for children past the age of 7 years who have not been previously baptized.) RCIA is a process in which we look at ourselves, tell our stories, and figure out how God and the Catholic Faith fits into our lives. We ask questions and we search for truth.

Have you been thinking about joining the Catholic Church?

Have you been Baptized but have not received First Holy Communion or been Confirmed?

If you answer “yes” to either of these questions, contact Christina Sanders, St.

Mark Pastoral Assistant, at 314.743.8604 or [email protected] for more

information about the RCIA Inquiry classes which will begin in September.

Seeking Area Families to Host International Students

For the last two years, Ed McElroy of KEM Educational Group has been hosting Chinese high school students at St. John Vianney High School. Next year, there will be more than a dozen Chinese students at Vianney. Ed is currently leasing the convent at St. George to house these Vianney students.

Next year, there will also be several Chinese students attending Rosati-Kain High School. Ed is looking for several area families to host one or more of these students. One Vianney student has also expressed a desire to live with an American family.

Host responsibilities will include preparing breakfast and dinner for the students and driving the students to and from their school. If we can find host families that live close to St. George, the possibility exists that the students may want to eat Chinese dinners at the St. George convent. A perfect situation would be where the local family has a spare bedroom where the student can stay. Ed and his wife will still act as the liaison between the school and each student’s family. Host families will receive a monthly amount for providing home stay services.

If you would like any information about this opportunity, please feel free to contact Ed at (858) 869-5065.

VBS: Around the World in 5 days … … exploring various Saints and the virtues of Faith, Hope, and Love

During the week of June 26th – 30th, 25 young children gathered at St. Mark’s Church to learn about:

FAITH-filled servant, St. Juan Diego (of Mexico) who did as Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mary) asked. Juan told the Bishop of Our Lady’s appearance and her want for a church to be built; and, they learned of the sign Our Lady left on Juan’s tilma (cloak). The children made a tilma with the sign/image of Mary on it.

HOPE-filled St. Brigid (of Ireland) who lived at a time when Christians were persecuted; and, so, she wove a cross from hay or straw that collapsed and could be easily hidden near the fireplace when an unfriendly person came to one’s house. The craft for the day was the making of Brigid (folding) cross; and the children played outside spreading Brigid’s “cloak” to show how big Brigid wanted a church to be built.

LOVE-filled man St. Martin de Porres (of Peru) who healed many sick people and believed even the mice should be taken care of. The children snacked on mouse food … cheese and crackers (and grapes, too). St. Martin humbly called himself “Brother Broom,” and he was even seen throughout the week sweeping the floors of Hambrough Hall (VBS main gathering space).

St. Nicholas (of Myra in what is modern day Turkey) was a Bishop and, so, the children made mitres (Bishops’ hats) and wore them during music time where they learned that “Our God is Big, our God is Strong.” In the spirit of St. Nicholas (Santa Claus), the cheerful giver, the children brought in toys to benefit the infants and toddlers served by Our Lady’s Inn.

St. Kateria Tekakwitha (from America) who is known as the “Lily of the Mohawks.” She had a great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and Holy Communion, and our campers learned about Eucharistic Adoration and experienced prayer time in front of Jesus in the monstrance. Praying to Jesus can give us the strength to be missionaries and go tell others about Jesus.

Many thanks to each and every person who made VBS possible … … the adult and teenage volunteers … as-well-as the children who came each day ready to have fun and learn about our Catholic faith.
