Attending this meeting, signals to Boeing you are commit- ted to getting a good contract. The show of solidarity demonstrates members support their negotiators. District 751 Presi- dent Mark Blondin stressed, “Waiting to vote on the last and final proposal on September 1st is not enough. It is over by that time. Union Negotiating Committees are meeting on an ongoing basis to exchange proposals. Both sides have agreed not to negotiate in the me- dia. Therefore, little details will be available on a daily basis. Blondin noted, “I understand the mem- bers’ concern and interest in receiving details of the negotiations. However, it is not condu- cive to the negotiation environment to release details while the negotiations are continuing. Once we enter the critical phase, I will do everything in my power to keep the members apprised of the progress of negotiations.” For an overview of the proposal, see page 7.     LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

    Your Union Leadershipformally submitted our con-tract proposal to the BoeingCompany on Friday June 10th

    at the Union Headquartersin Seattle. Our proposal con-tains changes and additionsto the current Collective BargainingAgreement – changes and additions thatreflect your answers and input to themultiple surveys and shop floor meet-ings that you have participated in thisyear.

    Pension is the top issue. Our proposalnot only significantly raises the basicbenefit, but asks for cost-of-living ad-justments for past and future retirees.

    We have also proposed posi-tive changes to the alternateformula. In addition to thechanges to the Boeing de-fined benefit pension plan(currently at $60.00 permonth per year of service)and the alternate formula –your Union is proposing asecond pension plan, the

    IAM National Pension Plan. With in-creases and changes to the Boeing Pen-sion Plan along with the addition of theIAM Pension Plan, your union feels wecan achieve your goal – retirement secu-rity.

    Your Union is also proposing manynecessary changes to the Medical Plans.These changes will increase the qualityof our health care, and curtail out-of-

    pocket expenses and deductibles. This isa top issue of our membership and yourbargaining team intends to bargain hardon your behalf for this as well as pen-sions.

    Jobs in the Puget Sound region arecritical for us and future workers. Weintend to push for Puget Sound to be thecritical and foremost area of expertise inthe fabrication and assembly of Boeingaircraft. We should be the workforce ofchoice as the Company moves forward,and we should share in the success of theCompany.

    There are many more issues than thesetop ones I have written about. Whetherit is pension, health care, shift differen-tial, more vacation, sick leave, training,upgrades, transfers, or any issue – wecan only achieve them if we are solidly

    together. Thanks for the continued soli-darity and support. The shop floor lunch-time meetings have gone well and all ofyour input is really appreciated.

    Membership participation will be keyto our success. I need every member toattend the Strike Sanction meeting onJuly 13. We need to stand together andsend that united message to Boeing – themessage that the Union is together andwill do what it takes to get a great con-tract. Big numbers show solidarity andhelp win a good contract. We expect theCompany to Do the Right Thing andtreat our members fairly. I will see youthere.

    If every member of this union takesthis seriously and attends this very im-portant meeting, we will be successful.

    Over the last few weeks, we’ve seenunprecedented attacks on our members.United Airlines is about to default on itspension plan, adversely affecting thou-sands of IAM members. Over 400 IAMbaggage handlers have lost their jobs atAlaska. …And now, this despicable cut-throat contract at Wichita, which ourmembers soundly rejected. In each ofthese cases, thousands of other employ-ees of these companies are also gettingthe “rug pulled out from under them.”

    It’s time for District 751, and all of us in

    Members at United to VoteIAM members at United Airlines will

    vote on a five-year tentative agreementthat resolves all outstanding issues for anamended collective bargaining agree-ment. Voting will be concluded by July22, 2005.

    “We believe this tentative agreementis fair to our members and contributesthe cost savings United needs,” said IAMDistrict 141 President Randy Canale.“The IAM Negotiating Committee unani-mously recommends ratification of thistentative agreement as the best way toavoid contract termination, provide se-cure pension benefits and job securityfor our members.”

    The tentative agreement establishesparticipation of IAM-represented em-ployees in the multi-employer IAM Na-tional Pension Plan, a fully-funded de-fined benefit plan covering 65,000 ben-eficiaries at 1,700 U.S. companies.

    “This Negotiating Committee did anoutstanding job under appalling circum-stances,” said Robert Roach, Jr., IAMGeneral VP of Transportation.

    “This agreement preserves the integ-rity of our contracts and bargaining rightsat United,” said Canale. “A negativedecision in court could have wiped out50 years of collective bargaining achieve-ments.”Alaska Airlines is Off Course

    The IAM is prepared to resume nego-tiations with Alaska Airlines on all out-standing contract issues, in the wake ofthe June ruling denying the IAM’s re-quest for an Emergency Motion for Pre-liminary Injunction against Alaska Air-

    labor, to take a clear, public stand in sup-port of our fellow union members andrelated workers. At a minimum, we neednotices on the web site and in our paper aswell as public demonstrations of solidar-ity. Our members can be counted on to

    respond generously to all requests for aidfrom our fellow brothers and sisters. Ex-pressions of solidarity now are crucial to asuccessful conclusion to our own contractnegotiations this fall. Do the right thing!

    Attacks on Workers Are a Call to Action for All of Us

    If Alaska is unwilling to bargain asettlement to the satisfaction of our mem-bers, then the IAM will notify the Na-tional Mediation Board that negotiationsare at an impasse and ask to be releasedfrom mediation. This initiates a 30-daycount down which would result in astrike at Alaska Airlines.

    Meanwhile, hundreds of IAM mem-bers and union activists rallied at Seattle’sSea-Tac International Airport and thenmarched to the airline’s headquarters.District 751 members and leadershipwere there to lend support. In addition,

    District 751 has helped with mailings,flyers, media and other activities.

    Alaska Airlines has been beset withoperational problems since the lockout.The airline’s CEO, Bill Ayer, said in aconference call with the IAM and otherunions that some of the cost-cutting de-cisions the company made have been“backfiring.”

    Ayer reported beginning of summeroperations has been a “disaster.” He saidthat on-time performance is about 40percent with 35 cancelled flights.Talks with Onex Restart

    In Wichita, negotiations between theMachinists Union and Onex got off to arocky start on June 20. The Union pro-posed to use the last, best and final offerthat was rejected on May 24 as a startingpoint.

    On June 20, the company’s proposalincluded language that was similar to theproposal that was rejected on May 24.However, changes to the proposal in-cluded no pension, no equity participa-tion program, changes to vacation andsick leave accrual rate and changes to themedical package.

    “We need to secure the very bestCollective Bargaining Agreement aspossible for our members, with as manyaccompanying jobs as possible,” saidIAM Aerospace Coordinator DickSchneider. “We hope to have a newproposal for our members to vote on inthe next few weeks.”

    At a press conference timed to coin-cide with the opening of the Paris AirShow, District 751 President MarkBlondin joined U.S. Senators PattyMurray and Maria Cantwell in callingfor an end to unfair subsidies for Airbus.

    Senator Murray has continually ledthe charge in urging the U.S. govern-ment to go after the European Union forsubsidies which give Airbus an unfairadvantage. Murray applauded the U.STrade Rep for moving forward a tradecase with the World Trade Organization(WTO).

    Along with airplanes and technology,there’s something else on display at theworld’s biggest air show, declaredMurray, “the fruits of some thirty yearsof direct cash advances and illegal subsi-dies to Airbus.”

    She added, “Some may ask why theEuropeans must subsidize their new air-craft, but we know the answer. The Eu-ropeans understand that without the sub-sidies, without an unfair advantage, theywould have a heck of a time competinghead-to-head with American workers.They would lose. We’ve got to stop thesubsidies.”

    District 751 President Mark Blondinnoted, “It is time to level the playingfield and protect and support our aero-space jobs. We have to hold Airbus ac-countable.”

    He complimented the tireless effortof both Senators and the Washingtondelegation in eliminating the unfair sub-sidies.

    “It is essential to stop Airbus from

    Some 57 million workers inAmerica say they would join a uniontomorrow if they could. A bill wasreintroduced in both houses of Con-gress that would level the playingfield for workers trying to formunions. It’s the bipartisan EmployeeFree Choice Act, and it could makea difference for working people try-ing to gain a voice on the job. Thebill was introduced into the 109thCongress by Senators EdwardKennedy (D-Mass.) and Arlen Spec-ter (R-Pa.) and Reps. George Miller(D-Calif.) and Pete King (R-N.Y.).

    The Employee Free Choice Actis a common sense approach to re-storing workers’ freedom to formunions. It would require employersto recognize the union once a major-ity of workers signed cards autho-rizing union representation.

    The Employee Free Choice Actalso provides for mediation and ar-bitration of first-contract disputesand authorizes stronger penalties foremployers that violate the legalrights of workers seeking to formunions and negotiate first contracts.

    On paper, U.S. labor law andinternational standards give work-ers the legal right to form unions—but in the real world, employersblock that right day after day.

    POLITICAL ACTIONPush to Eliminate Airbus Launch Aid

    Realizing President Bush’s plan forprivate accounts has little hope of pass-ing, Congressional Republicans are look-ing to salvage a modest victory on So-cial Security. The Senate is focused onsolvency by raising the retirement age toage 69 and cutting benefits. The Houseis concentrating on a broad package ofreforms that address retirement secu-rity. According to The Wall Street Jour-nal, conservative Republicans Sen. JimDeMint (R-SC), Sen. Rick Santorum(R-PA) and Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX),who staunchly support private accounts,are preparing to introduce legislationthat would use Social Security’s current

    don’t sell. We should all be so lucky.“Companies having to contend with

    the risk of financial loss is what guaran-tees the public the highest-quality, safestproduct...Airbus takes short cuts andapplies for massive subsidies to avoidsuch risk.”

    In Geneva on June 13, the U.S. andEuropean Union both blocked requestsfrom one another asking the WTO tocreate panels to investigate illegal subsi-dies.

    Free Choice ActIntroduced

    On June 11th, Boeing Forklift Operators from thePuget Sound area held a Rodeo, but left the livestock onthe farm. The 2005 Boeing Internal Forklift Rodeo wasconducted to select the eight team members that willrepresent Boeing at the Governor’s Conference ForkliftRegional Rodeo on August 13th.

    Fifteen competitors went at it in a display of safety

    and skills that kept the spectators on the edge of theirseats. The course was extremely challenging, and thescoring was close. Every driver met the challenge!Judges were Material Handling Managers, Safety Moni-tors and LTD Instructors.

    Not surprisingly, the top three competitors, DougGraham, Mike Weinman, and Tim Eacrett were theState Championship Team in 2004.

    On hand to observe the event were Tom McClelland,Director of IDS WPS, Stu Holdridge, Director of Au-burn WPS, and a special guest, Greg Davis, Chairmanof the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advi-sory Board.

    A highlight of the event was a challenge “grudgematch” from Material Handling manager Mark Ribichto his peers. Stepping up to meet his challenge were

    Congress Maneuvers Around Opposition to Private Accountssurplus to create private accounts, a movethat would worsen Social Security’s pro-jected future shortfall.

    “The president didn’t realize when hedecided to invent the Social Security‘crisis’ that he was actually creating acrisis of his own,” said George Kourpias,President of the Alliance for RetiredAmericans. “He didn’t expect such aloud and united reaction from thousandsof seniors around the country. Medicare payrolltaxes, for example, continue regardlessof income and without increased ben-efits.

    Americans are opposed to any at-tempt to dismantle Social Security –especially in view of recent pension planssuch as United Airlines.

    Nominations shall be made for the fol-lowing Local Lodge officers for a three-year term as described in the table below,in each first Local Lodge meeting in Sep-tember with elections held in October.NOMINATION QUALIFICATIONS:

    When is the Strike Sanction meeting?

    Wednesday, July 13 at Safeco Fieldin Seattle. Gates open at 8 a.m. Meet-

    ing begins at 10 a.m. Bring yellow eligi-bility card for admittance. All membersare excused from work without pay for thetime necessary to attend this meeting.

    Members at Edwards Air Force Base willmeet at 10 a.m. on July 13 at the sign at thewest entrance to the base in Rosamond,California.

    Why do we have a second vote on Sep-tember 1 to reaffirm strike sanction?

    When you vote on July 13th, youhave not seen the proposal. Once

    members see the final offer, members havethe opportunity to change their minds. Theinitial Strike Sanction meeting on July 13is a showing of solidarity among the mem-bership and support to the negotiators. It isalso required by the IAM Constitution tostart the process of preparing strike checksin the event a work stoppage occurs. Astrong showing at the Strike Sanction meet-ing sends a message to the Company thatyou are serious and you deserve a fair andequitable contract. A re-affirmation voteis your commitment to withhold your la-bor in solidarity if the offer is unaccept-able.

    How do I get a ballot?

    Exchange the yellow eligibility card

    NOTE: No special parking for motorcycles, which get the same rate as cars.There are numerous smaller parking lots surrounding the stadium that range from $3 to $6. There are many lots on 1st Avenue,Occidental, and under the viaduct. If members carpool, the Safeco Field, Qwest Field and Home Plate Parking should be sufficientto hold the majority of the membership.

    Chartered BusesIf a shop wants to organize and get the required riders, the

    Union will order a bus. Deadline for ordering buses: Monday,July 11, 2005. BUSES MUST BE FULL to get the pricesquoted below. When the money for a bus has been received atany Union Hall the bus will be ordered.

    Will we get paid for attending?

    No - this is the one day every threeyears that all members take time off

    to show their commitment by leaving theworkplace to show their solidarity andsend a message to the Company that weare serious.

    Do we get excused from work to at-tend the Strike Sanction meeting?

    Yes - all members are excused onUnion business to attend this meet-

    ing. (The time necessary to reasonablyprepare for and travel to and from theevent). It is imperative that on this ex-cused absence, you show up for this meet-ing and stay for the entire event. TheCompany may require proof of attendancein order to allow such an excuse.

    Where can we park for the StrikeSanction meeting?

    Parking is available in multiple lotssurrounding Safeco Field. See the

    map below for specific locations andprices. Handicapped parking will be avail-able in both the Safeco Field and QwestField lots. Simply show a WashingtonState handicapped decal, bumper stickeror hanging notice from rearview mirror.

    Will buses be provided as transpor-tation to the meeting?

    No - there is ample parking in andaround Safeco Field. There are many

    other means of public transportation: citybuses, commuter trains and carpooling areall available transportation to this veryimportant event. This is your contract andyour livelihood. If shops want to organizea bus, the Union will help schedule a bus(see details in lower right corner).

    What will be on the ballot?

    You will vote either YES or NO togrant the Negotiating Committee

    Strike Sanction Authority (see sample bal-lot above).

    Who counts the ballot?

    Members who volunteer will countthe ballots immediately following

    the meeting.

    Where can I get the “Right Thing”commitment wristband?

    The ONLY place to get one is at theStrike Sanction meeting on July 13.

    Wear it daily to show you attended and arecommitted to getting a good contract.

    Will Boeing allow us to wear the com-mitment wristbands in the shop?

    Yes. Corporate Boeing assured us thatmembers will be allowed to wear the

    wristbands through September 1st. If man-agement in your shop asks you to take themoff for safety reasons, comply and then callthe hall to get the situation resolved.

    Can family and friends attend theStrike Sanction meeting?

    No; however, if someone cannot finda sitter for kids or any other special

    circumstances, they will not be turned away.We have not opened up the Strike Sanctionmeeting to family and friends in the past. Itwould be too much of a logistical undertak-ing to ensure the proper folks received aballot. The Strike Sanction meeting on July

    13th is for 751 members only.

    Can members bring family and friendsto the Truth Rally on August 21st?

    Yes, family and friends are welcomeat the contract Truth Rally on August

    21st at Angle Lake.

    Other Transportation Options

    Many members have asked for an ex-planation of the strike sanction process sothey better understand its importance.

    Holding an initial strike sanction votewell in advance of the actual contract expi-ration date accomplishes two importantthings.

    First, the initial July 13 vote providesadvanced legal notice to the Grand Lodge,so members will receive the strike benefitchecks without any undue delay if theyvote to strike on September 1st. It is re-quired in the IAM Constitution.

    Explanation of Strike Sanction ProcessSecond, an early strike sanction vote is a

    prime opportunity to educate and rally themembers. An open, strong signal of mem-bership determination can persuade the com-pany to bargain earnestly and reduce thechances you will have to strike to secure agood agreement. Boeing closely watchesattendance at this meeting as a gauge of howsupportive the members are of Union nego-tiators. A small crowd tells them membersare not serious about obtaining a fair con-tract and do not support Union negotiators.

    This vote is in no way an indication a

    strike will occur on September 1st.The IAM Constitution requires a reaffir-

    mation of strike sanction when you vote onBoeing’s final offer. The second reaffirma-tion gives members a chance to change theirminds once they have seen the Company’sproposal. When a member votes to reaffirmon September 1, they are saying they arewilling to strike and support the Union’sposition. The initial strike sanction vote onJuly 13 is done before members have seen aproposal. It would not be fair to use that voteto take members out on strike.

    HEALTH CARE – Our proposal focuseson controlling out-of-pocket costs bylooking at all alternatives and options.We are searching for creative andinnovative ways to control costs. Theanswer is not to shift costs from em-ployer to employees. We need theUnion and Company working togetherto get more value from providers.

    COLA FOR RETIREES – Union is pro-posing all retirees, past and future, getCOLA. While it is not a mandatorybargaining subject for past retirees, itis an issue we will continue to push.

    SICK LEAVE/HOLIDAY/VACATION/BEREAVEMENT – Proposing improve-ments in all four benefit areas.

    JOB SECURITY – Union proposes limit-ing ability of the Company to offloadour work.

    Focus groups continue to give members personal one-on-one interaction with Union representatives. PoliticalDirector Linda Lanham and Communications DirectorConnie Kelliher continue to conduct focus groups andstrive to ensure members feel comfortable and give hon-est input.

    In addition, Union Business Representatives continueto hold shop floor meetings to provide information andget feedback from the members.

    751-member Alan Stach attended the SeattleFocus Group and stated, “The focus groups makesure our message is not filtered through UnionStewards. It is an opportunity for Union leaders tolisten and hear us. Focus groups will help bolsterand build up trust with the Union. They answeredour questions honestly and allowed us to providecriticism, as well.”

    Wayne S. Johnson agreed, “Focus groups givethe Union members a chance to have a local voiceand to speak their concerns. They ensure our mes-sage gets to the negotiating table.”

    Focus groups discuss a wide spectrum of issuesand are driven by concerns of the members. Recenttopics discussed include contract priorities, what isan acceptable pension, team leader, what are strikeissues, union credibility, and how to deal with risingmedical costs.

    Below are a few comments from recent focus groups:“I would rather see a percentage on pension.”“Make sure to tell us if the final offer has a sucker punch (a

    Motorcycles roared from Everett toAuburn to converge on the Seattle UnionHall in the third annual Puppy Putt mo-torcycle ride to benefit Guide Dogs ofAmerica. Nearly 100 riders turned outfor the event, which raised over $7,000for Guide Dogs of America. Riders fromboth the south and north met at Down-town Harley Davidson before leavingfor the Seattle Union Hall.

    Besides putting along the course route,participants enjoyed a barbecued lunch,and music from Bret Wilks Music.

    Those attending voted to select the win-ners of the bike show (1st, 2nd, 3rd, People’sChoice and Best of Show). Other compe-tition included slow ride and loud pipes.

    At the June 13th business meeting, AlMenke called the meeting to order at 11a.m. The Lord’s Prayer was said followedby the flag salute and the singing of “GodBless America.”

    Business Rep Report: Business RepPaul Knebel reported formal negotiationswith Boeing began on June 10. Getting anincrease or COLA for existing retirees is apriority and part of the Union proposal.

    Seniors from around the state gath-ered at the Seattle Union Hall on May 31for the third annual Alliance of RetiredAmericans conference. Many 751 retir-ees attended to hear updates on seniorefforts to save Social Security, improveand protect Medicare and preserve pen-sion plans. Washington Alliance Presi-dent Art Boulton welcomed the crowd.

    Senator Maria Cantwell addressedthe crowd and provided an update on thefight to preserve Social Security.Cantwell pledged her unwavering com-mitment to stop President Bush’s plansto privatize Social Security. She addedthat she has led the charge against en-ergy companies that were overchargingcustomers (particularly seniors).

    The conference also featured “TheTruth Truck” which is carrying morethan one million messages to Congressfrom seniors opposed to the privatizationof Social Security. Will Parry, LouiseParry and Lonnie Nelson told movingpersonal stories about how Social Secu-rity impacts their lives. The WA StateAlliance represents more than 61,000seniors and retirees across the state.

    O’Brien reported in 1985, therewere 3 1/2 active workers forevery retiree covered by a plan(retirement plan). Today, thenumbers are equal, reflecting thatemployers have eliminated plansfor many new workers.

    A dangerous pattern is being set todump pensions, i.e. United Airlines. DeltaAirlines may seek bankruptcy protection,as well as General Motors and Ford. In1964, 58% of autos and light trucks sold inAmerica were G.M. Today, it is 26 percentand GM and Ford bonds have been re-duced to junk status. Healthy companieswith sound plans may try to end them andfreeze benefits.

    Tom O’Brien also spoke on how toprotect ourselves from identify theft.

    John Guevarra read exerts from MollyIvins column, which pointed out how wellthe super rich have done under the currentadministration. The hyper rich have donewell. Under the Bush tax cuts, the 400taxpayers with the highest income – aminimum of $87 million – now pay in-come, Medicare and Social Security taxesamounting to virtually the same percent-age of their incomes as people making$50,000 to $75,000.

    Under the Bush tax plan, by 2015, thosemaking between $80,000 and $400,000will be paying as much as 14 percent moreof their incomes than those who arehyperrich.

    It turns out the American dream of

    moving up is now more likely to occur inBritain and France.

    The scale of the decline of the middle class isbecoming very apparent to all. The mainstreammedia is trying to divert attention from the depravitythat is signaling the end of America with “hot topics”that have little or no impact on daily life. I will beglad when the “mainstream media” stops focusingon trivial monkey business like Michael Jackson orthe “runaway bride.”

    In other major news mediums, we hear about thewar in Iraq, poverty and insurgency in Afghanistan,unrest in Kosovo and other real issues that have adramatic effect on the world. Missing from theheadlines in this country is in depth coverage onpension fund bailouts and record foreclosures, whichare up 50 percent in the last year. In the San Fran-cisco Bay area 82 percent of the home loans areadjustable rate loans. They have lost more than threehundred thousand jobs in that area. We are alreadypainfully aware of the job loss here in the northwestin the aviation industry.

    Let’s twilight and zone out for a moment. Imag-ine, America without a middle class. No mediumprice homes, no economy or affordable cars, nodiscount malls at Target anywhere. All that will beleft is crowns for the rich and crumbs for the poor.This is what you will have in a country where theonly jobs available are service work. Imagine work-ing at a fast food chain or cleaning rooms at the localmotel being considered as good jobs we should begrateful for.

    The “American Dream” is all but gone, a fadedmemory. A home? Please…. The average home inthe Seattle city limits can cost a buyer $400,000.This means someone making $60,000 a year hasvery little or no chance of acquiring an average homein Seattle. Even if that “Dreamer” and their spousemake $60,000 a year each… they would still bethousands of dollars too short to qualify for a home

    Then there is that nasty littlebusiness of the pensions, themoney paid to retirees? It, too,is in grave danger. With onemajor company dumping theirsituation on the taxpayers orthe government it only causesother companies that are main-taining their pensions to cringeunder the higher insurance pre-miums they must pay to make sure that the retireesget their pensions.

    Social Security is being maneuvered into theclutches of Wall Street sharks. How many of you arewilling to trust Wall Street with your Social Secu-rity? These funds are supposed to sustain you toyour dying day.

    Public apathy in America is the disgusting can-cer that will spell the demise of the greatest nationon earth. Lack of concern, interest, willingness toread, learn, and understand your world, will createa very different world for your descendants. Yourown children will suffer the pains poverty inflictedon them by those of us today that do not answer thecall to secure the future of our nation. If we who cansee this coming do nothing, future poverty will beour fault.

    We are all charged with the daunting task ofsecuring our children’s future. Do you want yourchildren and grandchildren to live in the samemanner as the “peasants” of the 12th century? Are

    you comfortable knowing your actions todaymay impoverish future generations of Ameri-cans long years from now? We should not be soconcerned about our own paychecks that werelieve future generations of paychecks earnedon American soil. The decision is now yours tomake now.

    The Union got involved and met withUnion Relations, HR, and SHEA. To-gether, we found a common solution to“Do the Right Thing” and keep the workin-house – letting our members finishthe job they had started.

    In Renton, an effort toimprove the communica-tion on the shop floor be-tween the Union and theCompany has resulted inthe Union Stewards of the737 final assembly build-ing and the superintendentand general managers mak-ing a commitment to meettwice a month. These meet-ings occur on payday, ev-ery other Thursday and in-clude both the first and sec-ond shift union stewards.

    The meeting agenda caninclude any number of top-ics; however, usually theitems for discussion are thehot issues of the day. Recent discus-sions have centered on the increas-ing workload and production ratesfor the 737 program. With start upof new work the meetings havefocused on shift preference, workassignments and recalls. Previously,these meetings covered other im-portant topics from the urgent safety item of the day, to themore mundane, such as parking.

    Perhaps even more important than the actual topic ofthese meetings is the opportunity created by havingface-to-face discussions. This open dialogue betweenmanagement and the Union strengthens the lines ofcommunication. This enhanced communication helpsavoid problems and improves the Union’s ability tosolve the contractual conflicts which inevitably occur.

    Longtime Union Steward Bob Merritt believes therehas been improvement but there is still progress to bemade. Bob states, “Since we started meeting with thesuperintendent and the general supervisors, the com-munication has greatly improved between the Com-

    age. In order to win the work, we had to prove toengineering we could do it. We have done a lot ofMR&D work to prepare for 787 production. We like totake on new challenges such as working with a mainlycomposite airplane and dealing with a much largerplane. Our work with Super Plastic Forming and tita-nium is unmatched anywhere else in the world,” addedUnion Steward John Davis.

    The unique production capabilities at EMF makethem the logical choice to produce the 787 aft enginepylon heat shields. Members in EMF combine excep-tional skills with cutting edge technology to hot formtitanium and utilize super plastic forming technology.EMF has bids in on other 787 work packages. They arestill waiting to hear if they will get that work.

    Just in the hard metals area of EMF, headcount willincrease this fall. When 787 production begins, addi-tional headcount may be required.

    As part of Boeing Auburn’s role in new productdevelopment, the site is also providing to the 787 pro-gram essential test, tooling and support work in areaslike Cutting Tool Services, where the group perfectedimproved processes for drilling holes more accuratelyin composites. In addition, Developmental Manufactur-ing and other employees at Boeing Auburn are perform-ing test part machining, manufacturing the wing test boxand completing composite panel build-up.

    In January, the 787 program unveiled its first full-scale composite one-piece fuselage section, demon-strating the concepts for production to begin next year.Boeing Auburn is part of the multi-functional team thathelped develop the barrel panels. The results are excep-tional – with the site helping prove tooling and manufac-turing concepts and material choices.

    The Union continues to push for additional 787fabrication work for our members.
