Thanks to the hard work of the Union, Petra was relieved of potentially over $76,000 in medical bills she would otherwise have been asked to pay. Petra was very emotional and thankful the Union was there to protect her interests and repre- sent her to the Company. Beyond having to battle cancer and fight for her life, Petra had the added stress of figuring out how to pay for over $76,000 in medical bills – unless the Union could get Boeing to agree to reinstate her health care coverage. The stress over these poten- tial financial bills was incredible. For Joe Crockett, it was a personal challenge he was determined to fix for this member. One of the gains in this new contract that received little attention is the work of the Jobs Committee. As a result of their efforts, nearly 500 members in sev- eral jobs received upgrades with the po- tential for several hundred more mem- bers to be upgraded as the Jobs Commit- tee continues their work. During the recent negotiations, mem- bers in various job classifications spent countless hours compiling data and build- ing a case to illustrate why their job should be paid at a higher pay rate. While the past two contracts have delivered upgrades to only a few dozen members, this year the Jobs Committee was able to negotiate upgrades for job codes with a much bigger impact. Effective with the November 1 st ratification vote, over 275 decorative painters moved from Grade 7 to Grade 8, and another 175+ Integral Fuel Cell Inspectors were upgraded from a Grade 6 to Grade 7. While negotiations have concluded, the Jobs Committee continues to work for additional upgrades. An agreement during this round of talks charged the committee with reviewing the job pack- age for differences between knowledge, skills and responsibilities for the assem- bler installer structures/assembler in- staller wing structures. If both parties agree there is a higher graded work state- ment, then we will utilize an existing modified inline promotion process, which could result in up to 250 upgrades from Grade 4 to Grade 6. Union Reps on the Jobs Committee worked closely with Union Business Reps to educate members on the con- tractual process, as well as counseling members on the extensive data and docu- mentation required to convince Boeing such an upgrade is justified. This re- quired a serious commitment of time and research from members in those jobs to compile a successful upgrade presenta- tion. While the decorative painters were the largest group to receive an upgrade, it was not their first attempt. These mem- bers had proposed upgrades in three dif- ferent contract negotiations before meet- ing with success. They built on what was learned in previous negotiations to present a stronger case. Members also faced new obstacles from management that made their work more cumbersome – not to mention the cre- ation of potential safety hazards. The most glaring change was the dis- appearance of chairs throughout the 787 program work stations – ironically, on the airplane line that needs the most work to get up and running. Specifically, in the 787 line all MT mechanics now have to stand as they pull up Standard Operating Instructions (SOI’s), Veloc- ity (the computer program used with the 787), and other online documentation required to perform their work. 787 members in Quality Assurance (QA) now find themselves standing at computer stations for hours at a time. The result is members on this airplane line must stand, kneel or lean over the computer work stations because of the absence of chairs and stools. To make matters worse, since the 787 line has huge issues plaguing it, most 787 work- ers are on 10-12 hour days in an effort to get the program back on track. The situation has created a number of back, feet and joint issues. To get some action, various SHEAR (Safety, Heath, Environmental Action Request) forms have been filed with the Company’s Safety Office. Taking a “Stand” on the 787 Line

Thanks to the diligence of Union Healthand Benefits Rep Joe Crockett, Christmascame early for 751 member PetraRogowski. Thanks to the hard work of theUnion, Petra was relieved of potentiallyover $76,000 in medical bills she wouldotherwise have been asked to pay. Petrawas very emotional and thankful the Unionwas there to protect her interests and repre-sent her to the Company.

Beyond having to battle cancer andfight for her life, Petra had the added stressof figuring out how to pay for over $76,000in medical bills – unless the Union couldget Boeing to agree to reinstate her healthcare coverage. The stress over these poten-tial financial bills was incredible.

For Joe Crockett, it was a personalchallenge he was determined to fix forthis member.

One of the gains in this new contractthat received little attention is the workof the Jobs Committee. As a result oftheir efforts, nearly 500 members in sev-eral jobs received upgrades with the po-tential for several hundred more mem-bers to be upgraded as the Jobs Commit-tee continues their work.

During the recent negotiations, mem-bers in various job classifications spentcountless hours compiling data and build-ing a case to illustrate why their jobshould be paid at a higher pay rate. Whilethe past two contracts have deliveredupgrades to only a few dozen members,this year the Jobs Committee was able tonegotiate upgrades for job codes with amuch bigger impact. with several other Subject Matter Expert(SME) members, put together a compre-hensive proposal, which outlined the rea-sons for such an upgrade and how thescope of work had changed to incorpo-rate additional responsibilities and farmore complex processes. The presenta-tion included a history of the job, photosto demonstrate the work performed, andfacts on how airline customers put atremendous amount of focus on the exte-rior paint scheme of the airplanes today.

751 member Jeff Knight, who helpedput together the Integral Fuel Cell In-spector presentation that resulted in over175 upgrades noted, “I am very satisfiedwith the process our Union has set forthin ensuring that all members have a voicein matters affecting them. The inequityin the pay rate for in tank inspectors has

been an issue for over 8 years. Onlythrough our presentation and the effortsof the Union Reps on the Jobs Commit-tee were we finally all assured that theseconcerns were heard during contracttalks.”

“I want to thank Jobs Committee chairStan Johnson for his assistance and ef-forts in securing this upgrade. He was amajor force in assuring that all memberson the Jobs Committee understood theimportance of pushing this through,” Jeffadded.

Business Rep Brett Coty, who repre-sents the painters in Everett noted, “Kevinand his crew did all the data collectionand packaged it in a great presentationthat not only impressed the Companyside of the Jobs Committee but the hourlyside as well. The presentation reflectedthe increased complexity of the workand resulted in the new labor grade.”

Union Steward Kevin Berry said,“Members are glad we continued to push.We know how dramatically our workhas changed over time.”

When the decorative painter job de-scription was written nearly 50 yearsago, there was only one airplane modelbeing produced – Boeing’s 707 with justa few basic paint styles used. Today,Boeing produces multiple airplane mod-els and derivatives. This diversity in-creases the knowledge base required. Inaddition, airlines have begun using theirplanes as flying billboards – frequentlyopting for elaborate, flashy paint jobsthat will catch your eye – even 30,000feet below on the ground.

Beyond using lasers for the custompaint jobs, our painters must apply freehand applications of multiple colors tointerpret photographs and transfer thedesign to the airplane, not to mention thevarious computer programs now requiredfor their jobs.

751-member Rich Clark, who worksas a decorative painter, stated that, “Per-sistence paid off. The fact that we hadtried for an upgrade in the past set thegroundwork for this time. We were moreprepared and could anticipate the ques-tions they would ask.”

751-member David Harrison added,“I feel that the Company as a whole isextremely out of touch with what hourlyworkers actually do on a day-to-daybasis.This is a hazardous and compli-cated job we perform and the more wecan show them the complexity of ourtasks, it creates a better working envi-ronment for everyone.”

As we wrap up 2008, Iwant to extend a heartfeltthank you to all the mem-bers and their families forthe tremendous solidarityand work you have donethroughout the year. We would not havebeen successful without your efforts anddedication. I am proud of what we haveaccomplished together in securing whatremains the best contract in the aero-space industry.

It seems we were in a constant battlethroughout 2008 - whether it was fight-

ing to overturn the tanker battle(which we will continue to fight in2009), working hard to negotiate afair contract that addressed yourissues, standing strong on the picketline, pushing to get worker-friendlycandidates elected at both the stateand federal level or correcting ven-dor issues on all the airplane lines.

Each and every issue has been met withsuccess. While some will be ongoing,your solidarity resulted in success.

It is this solidarity that will continueto produce results in the future. As theeconomy continues to decline, we willpush to ensure that our members are notimpacted by these turbulent times.

For our members in SSG (Facilities/Mainenance) who have heard rumors ofpotential layoffs, we have met withBoeing and emphasized the meaning ofchanges in LOU #2, which we believewill preserve the jobs of every membercurrently in those positions. Boeingshould eliminate the use of facilities ven-dors rather than trying to reduce thenumber of our members in those jobs.We fought hard at the bargaining table toupdate this language and will remainadamant about the protections the up-dated language provides. How ironic thatthe Company puts a big article highlight-ing the expertise and skills of SSG in thismonth’s Boeing Frontiers Magazine, in

the same month they begin talking lay-offs. The article highlights the value ofSSG employees – something we willcontinue to point out to Boeing.

After returning from the strike, it wasour members who put in long hours tocorrect “nutplate” issues on every air-plane line. We all know the “nutplate”issue was the reason only 4 planes weredelivered in November.

As far as Boeing’s latest slide on the787, Boeing wants to point to the recentstrike as a main reason, but we all knowthat other factors are the cause. The factis we had a 57-day strike. We have re-peatedly warned the Company when they

The men and women who work for aliving, and the unions that represent them,moved heaven and earth in 2008 tochange the political landscape inAmerica. In a determined effort to changethe direction of our nation, record num-bers of ordinary people rolled up theirsleeves, volunteered for phone banks,canvassed neighborhoods and encour-aged their fellow citizens to cast votesfor candidates to make life better for themiddle class.

The results were truly stunning. TheDemocratic majority grew in the U.S.House of Representatives and the Senatesaw an increase from a 51 to (at least atthis writing) a 58 majority of Democrats.We re-elected a worker friendly Gover-nor Chris Gregoire. Now what do we do?We hold these politicians’ feet to thefire, that’s what we do.

At the national level, we must insiston passage of the Employee Free ChoiceAct. When this bill is passed into law,workers will have a much easier go atexercising their right to belong to a union.Currently employers delay, refuse to fol-low the law, and fire workers to keepfrom paying the higher wages and ben-efits that union workers are able to nego-tiate. The Employee Free Choice Actwill allow a simple majority of workers

to gain recognition of their union andrequire companies to bargain a first con-tract. The bill will also protect workersfrom illegal firings.

Passage of the Employee Free ChoiceAct will not be easy. Some have estimatedthe employer community will spend over$200 million to defeat it. They will say allsorts of outrageous things to prevent work-ers from having their say and their union.Your union will be asking you to help inthis effort. Be prepared to contact your

Congressman and Senators to encouragetheir support for the Employee Free ChoiceAct.

For the 2009 Washington State Leg-islative Session, the Machinists Unionlegislative priorities include, but are notnecessarily limited to, the following:

• Passage of the Worker Privacy Act•Continued Funding for the

Aerospace Worker Apprenticeship pro-gram

• Passage of an Aerospace Industry

Incentives Look-Back BillThe Worker Privacy Act will help

protect workers from invasive or coer-cive employer mandated meetings.While employers may require their work-ers to attend meeting related to their job,it would provide workers the right to optout if the meeting pertains to religion,politics or labor organizing. The lawwould also prohibit retaliation if theworker opts out.

The Aerospace Worker Apprentice-ship program was funded in the 2008legislative session and we will lobby forthe continuation of this program to en-hance the skills of aerospace workersand make our industry more competitivein the State of Washington.

The Aerospace Industries Tax Incen-tives Look-Back Bill would provide fora report to the 2010 legislature. Thereport from the Washington State De-partment of Revenue will inform thelegislators of the quantity and quality ofthe jobs for employers collecting theWashington State Aerospace IndustryTax Incentives. The report would pro-vide wages and benefit levels for theseemployers. The idea is that the legisla-ture should know what these tax breaksfor industry are buying the state.

As Machinists around the country,along with members of other unions,have fought to preserve the aerospaceindustry this entire year, union membersworking for the big three auto-makershave been fighting to preserve their in-dustry. Their livelihoods depend on thesuccess of a GM, Chrysler, and Fordbailout resolution. Much like our fight towin the Tanker Contract and preservethe industrial base here in Washingtonstate, these union members have beenrallying for support from the govern-ment during this tough economic time.

But, why should we care? Well,there’s more to this situation than meetsthe eye, and you may be surprised to seejust how much the failure of these threecompanies could impact us all - espe-cially union members.

The “Big Three” as they are calledsupport 850,000 jobs in the United States– including the support jobs and suppli-ers that are found outside of their facto-ries. During strong economic times, aloss of so many jobs would be devastat-ing. Today, our economy could in noway absorb such a tragic loss.

When the bailout reached the Senatelast week, it was squashed early on bythe Senate Republicans. The Republi-cans who shot down this important bail-out argued that the union members work-ing on these cars should take on massivepay-cuts and benefit concessions to off-set the needs of their employers. Theyargue that the unions are responsible forthe current plight of these companiesand that the government is not respon-sible to help in such a case. By arguingthat union members shouldwork at ratesseen in non-union, foreign-owned shops,the Senate Republicans are taking aim atorganized labor - not the business fail-ures that got the Big Three into this messin the first place. As UAW PresidentRonald A. Gettelfinger said the day after

the bailout was shot down, these law-makers were essentially trying to “piercethe heart of organized labor” and “theybelieve workers are expendable andwages mean nothing.”

The current plight of the auto indus-try, and the industrial base of the UnitedStates as a whole, cannot be pinned onthe workers and the unions that supportthem. Instead, the governmental and ex-ecutive decisions to increasingly “glo-balize” our economy are to blame. Wehave lost much of our industrial capacityin the past decade and the combinationof those jobs, industry, and export losseshave accumulated to create this eco-nomic meltdown.

The future of the middle class de-pends on the strength of industrialAmerica. If the Big Three aren’t sup-ported in their struggle, the economy,the strength of unions, and the middleclass will all be at risk.

We have now reached a crossroads.There are two outcomes. One is the in-creasingly rapid collapse of industry, thegovernment-aided desolution of collec-tive bargaining rights, and the deteriora-tion of the middle class. The other is anincreased focus on the maintenance andrebuilding of the American industriallandscape, the steady support of middleAmerica, and governmental action thatwill foster economic growth instead offurthering the current downward spiral.

If the community, and union mem-bers nationwide, stand for one thing inthis complex economic meltdown thatwe now find ourselves in - it should bethat industrial America is key to an eco-nomic turnaround. It is the unions thathave set the standards for manufactur-ing. It is the workers, union and non-union, that build a sound economy.

How will we ever, as a community,escape such terrible economic times with-out fostering the growth of all three?

offload the build and design process, youlose control of the product and that isexactly what happened. Why weren’tthey catching up with suppliers or fixingthe fastener issue during the strike? Theonly answer is they need the expertise ofour members to build the airplane –proving our value in fixing problemswith vendors and the supply chain. Be-cause of vendor issues, another delaywas already impending before the strikeand Boeing waited to announce it untilthis month. Our members continue towork hard despite obvious obstacles (re-moval of chairs, incomplete and inaccu-rate vendor subassemblies) Boeing con-tinues to place in the way.

We would encourage Boeing to trulypartner with their workforce and harness

the tremendous skills and experience ofour members to find more productiveand efficient ways to build and deliverplanes. Our members have so many ideasthat could make Boeing more success-ful, but there are no clear channels toprovide input or direction from the shopfloor. Union leadership will continue topush for such a partnership with theworkforce and hope Boeing will recog-nize and tap into the wealth of knowl-edge that exists on the shop floor.

I hope each of you enjoy your union-negotiated holidays with your familyand friends. Keep in mind that any over-time over the holiday period (includingweekends) is strictly voluntary (per LOU#11 of the contract). You certainly haveearned the well-deserved holiday. Besafe, and I look forward to serving thismembership in the coming year.

Workers Vote to Get PayAfter 6 days occupying the plant,

workers at Republic Window and Doorsin Chicago voted to accept a settlement.The settlementtotals $1.75mil-lion. It will pro-vide the work-ers with:

• Eight weekspay owed underthe federalWARN Act;

• Twomonths of con-tinued healthcoverage, and;

• Pay for allaccrued and un-used vacation.

JPMorgan Chase will provide$400,000 of the settlement, with the bal-ance coming from Bank ofAmerica. Although the money will beprovided as a loan to Republic Windowsand Doors, it will go directly into a third-party fund whose sole purpose is to pay

Aero Editor’s Scrapbook Shows Rich Labor HistoryWilliam T. Holloman began as the Edi-

tor of the Aero Mechanic in May of 1943.As the editor of a prominent Union paperduring the years that Washington Stateserved as America’s foremost supplier forwar-time manufactured goods, Hollomanwas one of a small group of Labor Editorsdispatched to the Pacific Theater to ob-serve the battle line of supplies. Othersdispatched included representatives fromthe CIO News, the Federated Press, theAmerican Federationist and AFL NewsService, and the Labor Section of the Bu-reau of Public Relations.

The importance of this special invita-tion by the Army and the Navy was not loston Holloman, who compiled an incrediblescrap-book of literature, photographs andarticles detailing his experiences. It wasthis scrapbook that was discovered by asecretary at the Seattle Union Hall twoweeks ago. To say that it is a great find bothfor the District and the Labor History Com-mittee is an understatement. This piece ofhistory not only speaks to the experiencesof the soldiers who sacrificed everythingduring the war and the war workers athome who provided the supplies neededon the battlefield – it also speaks to justhow much the appreciation of Labor haschanged over the years since World WarII. Unfortunately, it also speaks to howmuch we’ve lost.

The first article entered into the scrap-book speaks loudly to those differences.Covering the deployment of the group of

labor editors, the article includes a state-ment by the War Department. “It is thedesire of the War and Navy Departmentsto give American war workers, as fullpartners of our fighting forces, the mostcomprehensive information obtainableabout the problems our troops face in thewar against Japan.” During this trip,Holloman was flown to each major com-bat zone in the war against Japan in anIAM member built C-24. His mission:“Write a regular weekly column for theAero Mechanic covering the war situa-tion in general and the more individualproblems of our servicemen as seen fromlabor’s viewpoint.”

As the scrapbook unfolds, Holloman’sexperiences speak of true patriotism – ofan America where there were no secretattacks, where the workers who made war

supplies at home were as valued as thesoldiers on the front lines, where labor andmilitary co-existed under a blanket of mu-tual respect because, after all, you could nothave one without the other.

Halfway through Holloman’s memo-ries is a picture that stands out more than therest. It’s a photo of the labor editors,Holloman included, meeting with Generalof the Army Douglas MacArthur on Au-gust 24, 1945. MacArthur received thegroup of labor representatives as they pre-pared to tour the Philippines for the purposeof surveying labor conditions there.

Why does this scrapbook stand out? Is itjust for historical reference? Of course not.In an age where the critical connectionbetween labor capability and militarystrength has been nearly severed, it is im-portant that we reflect on just how impor-

Nearly every day, Carlvisited all picket locations at the Everett site – capturing inphotos the various members walking the line. It was a missionhe enjoyed and took very seriously. When members wouldask what he was planning to do with the photos, he replied“build a strike scrapbook for all members to enjoy.”

Carl’s 2008 scrapbook begins with the Everett march tovote on September 3rd and ends with the November 1st vote.Beyond just the photos, Carl also included nearly every storyprinted in the Everett Herald on the 2008 strike.

Carl also included a dedication statement, “I hereby dedi-cate my time and effort taking these photos to every 2008striking IAM member. You made it possible for our future atBoeing. Bringing each and every day of your hopes andleaving a legacy of everlasting spirit on the picket line.Pictures were taken at all picket locations in Everett –knowing it would bring smiles and raise morale. Through therainy, windy and early morning hours, you were there hold-ing picket signs, dodging smoke from glowing hot burnbarrels (and meeting new fellow Machinists), while waitingfor the Union food van to arrive with hot coffee. Then finallyreturning to the Union hall to have your picket duty cardstamped off. Your time and dedication was well spent. Ipromised every picture I took from the picket lines would beplaced in a book and it has. I only hope the Everett IAMmembers enjoy these pictures of the 2008 strike. Thank you.”

During the 2005 strike, Carl put together a similar book,which many members have viewed over the past threeyears.Thanks for all the time and effort put into this book. Thebook was displayed at the December local lodge meetingsand will be permanently displayed in the Everett Union Hall.

Oak Harbor Freight employees and members ofthe Teamsters Union in Washington, Oregon andnorthern Idaho have been on strike for eleven weekswith no resolution in sight. Over six hundred familiesare hurting because a greedy employer demanded theloss of healthcare coverage for retirees, eliminationof paid sick leave, reduction of pension benefits,minimizing health care, the right to prohibit unionreps from talking to workers at the workplace andlower working conditions in order to maximize prof-its. To make mat-ters worse on thefirst day of thestrike, Oak Har-bor started hiringscabs to take theirjobs and breakthe Union so theywill be free to paywhatever theychose with mini-mal or no ben-efits – again toincrease theircorporate profits.As a result ofthese corporate tactics, Union families are suffering,unable to pay their monthly bills for food, clothingand medical expenses. Any financial assistance youcan provide will make their holidays brighter. Contri-butions can be sent to:

to the striking Teamsters at the December 12th meeting.But the support from 751 goes much further.

After Teamster members spoke at the Local CNovember Union meetings, those attending voted todonate the annual turkey giveaways to the strikingOak Harbor Freight families. 751-C member Terry“Caveman” Henderson has taken food and othersupplies to the picket line weekly. After he had a heartattack, immediately after being released from St.Francis hospital the day before Thanksgiving, Terrystopped to buy three cases of water, 50 apples, 50

oranges and numerous chickens to bring support tothe striking Teamsters.

“I have been bringing supplies several days aweek and stopping by to lend moral support. As theweather changes and holidays approach, it becomeseven more important for them to know they are notalone in their fight,” noted Terry.

In December, many members stepped up to de-liver firewood to stoke the burn barrels for the coldDecember nights. Others dropped supplies and took

an hour to walkthe line andshow their sup-port.

The strikingTeamsters havegarnered sup-port outside thelabor move-ment, includingthe ChurchCouncil ofGreater Seattleand the Interna-tional LaborRights Forum.

The Forum released a 23-page report finding thatOak Harbor Freight Lines violated international la-bor rights standards. According to the report, OakHarbor intentionally provoked a strike by proposingchanges to employees’ wages, benefits and workingconditions that would be unacceptable to the unionand its members during collective bargaining. Ratherthan correcting these violations by negotiating withits employees in good faith, Oak Harbor’s ownershave hired a notorious strike breaking firm andimported teams of professional strikebreakers tocoerce and scare loyal long-time employees.

Oak Harbor’s labor relations practices have alsocome under increased scrutiny by the company’scustomers. Since the strike began, a number of thecompany’s customers reportedly have stopped usingOak Harbor for shipping, including JC Penney, REI,Urban Outfitters inc., and Maytag Corporation.

It was fought and won by truepatriots – men and women who under-stood the importance of labor in America.Now, in 2008, our industrial base is but afraction of what it once was. If membersfrom that forgotten era of industrial strengthhad been asked the likelihood of defensecontracts – like that of the Air Force Tanker– being given to foreign countries theywould have guffawed. No way could thathappen. Well unfortunately it did. Now wehave some questions to ask ourselves.Where did America get lost? And how canwe use historical pieces like this scrapbookto find the answers? Most importantly,how can we rebuild a united country oflabor workers, military leaders and gov-ernment agencies?

nomic issues. You can walk through the787 line and see people leaning overcomputers with unnatural posture or evenkneeling on the concrete to get somerelief from the hours of standing on theconcrete.”

After initial complaints were filed,members were allowed to check out cush-ioned ergo mats to lessen the impact ofstanding on concrete for hours, but man-agement has yet to relent and allow chairsback into the areas.

787 management told the Union thatother QA areas in the factory do not havechairs at the work stations, but a walkthrough the 747, 767 and 777 lines foundeach area equipped with chairs. In the777 line, some of the QA areas had thechairs chained to the work stations sothey would stay with the work station aspart of the moving line. Even in the IRCand ESRC, all QA work stations haddesks and chairs. In 777, they have or-dered new ergonomic tables that can beeasily raised or lowered by simply turn-ing a handle to accommodate the indi-vidual as he/she works at the station.This attention to safety should be thestandard throughout the factory.

At times management seems combat-ive and interested in causing “issues”rather than finding the most efficient,productive way to build planes.

With the Company needing the ex-pertise of our members to work longdays to fix a number of 787 vendor issuesand fastener problems, this programshould provide the best ergonomic equip-ment available.

787 Union Steward Allen Neph whois also on the Site Safety Committeenoted, “Standing up for 10 hours createslow morale. We have an ergonomist ana-lyzing the standing work stations and theimpact on joints, feet and knees. Man-agement claims there are no chairs be-

cause they want QA and mechanics towork together as a team. Yet manage-ment took away the mechanics ability toinstant message QA when they wereready for an inspection. Now mechanicshave to come off the plane or choose touse their personal cell phone to find theinspector. This is not about efficiency.”

Business Rep Brett Coty agreed,“There is just no reason for employees tostand while working at computers forconsiderable lengths of time. Some mem-bers brought in their own chairs andmanagement threatened them with cor-rective action. We will work through thesafety channels to get this corrected be-fore workers end up on industrial leavesdue to injuries sustained from extendedstanding on concrete.”

Armed with evidence from the otherairplane lines showing the dramatic dif-ference, the Site Committee intends toget the SHEAR forms resolved as soonas possible so members can again focuson building the airplane rather than find-ing ways to get through the grueling longdays without injury.

Members Offering a HeThroughout the season of giving, Ma-

chinists Union members stepped up andhelped out others who might be less for-tunate during this holiday season.Salvation Army Red Kettles

Bells were ringing on Friday, Decem-ber 5th and 751 members were ringingthem as Machinists Union volunteers tookover the Salvation Army’s red kettlesthroughout Westlake Center in down-town Seattle. In all over 36 members andfriends gave a very strong Machinistspresence throughout Westlake Center andshowed others the Machinists are there togive back to the surrounding community.Over $1,200 was collected during theMachinists’ two hours on the kettles.

751 Steward Robley Evans noted, “Ihad a woman bring a huge bag of changeto my kettle. She explained that through-out the year she picks up all the sparechange and saves it to give to the Salva-tion Army once a year. It took her nearlyfive minutes to empty the bag. What agreat idea and an easy way to give moreat the holidays.”Holiday Food Drive

On Saturday, December 6th, Machin-ists Union volunteers were again out inforce at the Tacoma Mall and Everett

Mall to help with North-west Harvest and King5’s annual Home TeamHarvest food drive.

Because of the tougheconomic times, theneed was even greaterthis year, but area resi-dents emptied theirpockets and pantries tohelp the hungry in West-ern Washington. Thefood drive donations goto Northwest Harvest,an organization thatsupplies 300 food banksand meal programsacross Washington.

As a result of the one-day drive, NorthwestHarvest collected morethan $205,000 in cash –double the amount do-nated last year and a new record. Peoplealso gave 243,000 pounds of food – amore than 20 percent increase over lastyear. People filled huge trucks with fooddonations and delivered cans of soup,top ramen, and thousands of pounds ofpotatoes. Machinists were there to ac-cept the donations and transfer the foodto semi trucks for transport.

District 751 presented a check for$751 at the Everett Mall location, as wellas having numerous volunteers help atboth the Tacoma and Everett Malls fromthe start at 7 a.m. until nightfall.

Thanking the Longshoremen for StanMembers of the Longshoremen’s Union

(ILWU) showed their support throughoutour recent strike. Business Reps Jon Holdenand Richard Jackson traveled to the EverettLongshoremen’s hall to thank them fortheir actions and support.

Beyond just walking the line with us,they took a stand and refused to load orunload Boeing containers – arguing thedock was an extension of the Boeing plant.The issue went to arbitration to try to forcethe Longshoremen to handle the contain-ers. A Boeing rep even had to testify on theissue to try to move the shipment. The

arbitrator ruled the Longshoremen only hadto handle the containers that were loadedbefore the strike began. With the ruling, theLongshoremen refused all other containerssince they would have been handled byscabs at the Boeing plant.

“We wanted to help in any way wecould. We get a lot of steady work for theport because of Boeing so your work ben-efits us,” noted ILWU President MarkSullivan. “Boeing even thought of sneak-ing the train to other ports. We got a callfrom the Vancouver local and our clerkshad the container numbers from the Boeing

Thanks to an unprecedented show of generosity by Boeingemployees, three Puget Sound region food service agencies will beable to provide greater support to those less fortunate during theholiday season when demand is typically greatest.

Boeing employees around Puget Sound donated record amountsduring the 2008 Food & Essentials drive — more than $190,000 incash contributions, which is more than 400 percent greater than lastyear’s total. In addition, the company and the Employees Commu-nity Fund of Boeing Puget Sound matched employee contributionsup to $100,000 each. Combined with 36,240 pounds of food andessential items dropped off at donation stations, the drive generatedenough resources for nearly 2 million meals, or enough to feedabout 5,600 families of four for a month.

“It’s overwhelming for all of us to be recipients of such generousspirits and tremendous contributions,” said Camilla Bishop, direc-tor of development at Food Lifeline. Bishop spoke at a recent checkpresentation where the three recipient agencies – Food Lifeline,Northwest Harvest and Emergency Food Network – were pre-sented with contributions generated from the drive.

The record-breaking gift to the community comes at a time whendemands on food banks and other basic-need service providers areincreasing, Bishop said. One-third of food recipients are childrenwho often go to school hungry, and working families make up about70 percent of food bank clients.

Food & Essentials DriveHarvests Bounty of Generosity

During our recent strike, 751 Union Steward Brendon Anderson gota unique opportunity to help others. When he saw news coverage ofHurricane Ike’s devastation, he wanted to help. He called the localAmerican Red Cross (ARC) chapter and immediately began takingtraining so he could be effective in providing assistance. After about 11/2 weeks of training, Brendon flew to Houston on October 4th as partof the Red Cross effort.

Brendon spent nearly amonth helping others. Af-ter a few days volunteer-ing, the ARC recognizedhis leadership skills and ap-pointed him to serve as oneof three dormitory shift su-pervisors at the AuchanMega Shelter for a 12-hournight shift. In this position,he was responsible for over1,000 clients – many ofwhich were homeless be-fore Hurricane Ike. It was avery stressfulassignment for all volun-teers, and a position thatrequired Brendon to be as-sertive while dealing with many difficult clients.

“On a nightly basis I had to deal with client evictions due tointoxication, drug overdoses, verbally abusive behavior, etc. Inaddition, I was required to help with nightly ambulance calls forclients with medical and mental health issues, assist in the registra-tion process (in the especially challenging single men’s area), workto ensure client safety, break down cots with my teammates, monitorsmoking, showers areas, shelter perimeters and answer clients ques-tions,” Brendon recalled. “My supervisor said I had a can do attitude

The week of Thanksgiving, 751 mem-Al Conerly, who works in the Rentong majors, organized a collection to

p the less fortunate. With only a fews before the holiday, he wasn’t sure ifmbers would take part. Within two

days, Al had collected$220 in cash and hun-dreds of pounds offood. The food andmoney were given tothe King County La-bor Agency to helpunion families in needat Thanksgiving.

As Christmas ap-proached, the wingmajors group againstepped up and de-livered over $300cash, as well as otheritems, to the 751Hardship fund tohelp Union familiesin need.

“I thought weshould do somethingfor families in need.We all got bonusesand wanted to share

a little bit with others.The little boy who diedand inspired so manypeople to feed the home-less gave me the moti-vation to do something.I figure if we can’t helpothers, something iswrong,” stated AlConerly.

Retirees Annual HolidayLuncheon Packs Seattle Hall

The Seattle Union Hall was filled onMonday, December 8th as retirees andguests turned out for the annual RetiredClub Christmas Luncheon. The eventbegan with live music playing variousholiday songs, which made for a festiveatmosphere. Handmade, uniqueplacemats decorated each table.

Those attending were treated to a de-licious turkey dinner complete with allthe trimmings and pumpkin pie for des-sert. The stage was filled with over 100raffle prizes ranging from candy, wine,hickory farms gift sets, to photo frames,cash, and household items.

Many retirees wore festive Santa hats for the event.

Joe declared, “It was a very longstruggle and hard not to get emotionalwhen I called her with the good news. Itold her it is finally over, her insurance isback and reinstated and doctors can billfor the treatment she received. I wasproud to deliver the great news in timefor the holidays. She was very emotionaland choked up. Being able to fix an issueof this magnitude is why we becomeactive in the Union. It is a privilege to dothis job and great when you can makesuch an impact on a member.”

Petra has been very ill since 2006when she was diagnosed with cancer andwent out on a medical leave. She hadmoved in with friends and forgotten toupdate her address with Boeing. As aresult, the premium notice (because itcontains personal information) did notget forwarded. Between her treatmentsand moving, somehow, the $11 a monthmedical premium for Traditional Medi-cal Plan did not get paid.

After 60 days, the Company cancelsinsurance coverage; however, you have90 days to call up and get it reinstated. Onjust about the 90th day, Petra got herinsurance turned back on; however, theyclassified her as not having insurance forthe three previous months. During thosesame three months, her intensive cancertreatments accumulated over $76,000 indoctor bills. About the same time, shereceived a vacation payout from whichfour months medical premiums werededucted. Petra noticed the deductionand assumed everything was handled.However, Boeing insurance didn’t knowabout the deduction or that payroll re-funded the money rather than applying itto her insurance.

Boeing refused various appeals, butJoe continued to pursue the issue forPetra. He elevated it to Corporate Boeingin Chicago, who reviewed all the factsand agreed with Joe that had the deduc-tion been applied, Petra’s insurance pre-mium would have been covered.

Petra knows the value of Union repre-sentation and couldn’t say enough aboutthe great work of our Health and BenefitsRep Joe Crockett.

“He never gave up and continued topush to ensure the bills would be covered.I had no idea what I would do if I didn’thave Joe’s help. There was no way to findthe phone number to get ahold of them -I only had TotalAccess. Joe did a greatjob, held my hand, wrote letters, and gotme through this tough time. I am so ap-preciative. I would encourage other Unionmembers to contact the Health & Ben-efits office with problems,” stated Petra.

his initial volunteer tour was up, he ex-tended his deployment for another twoweeks. After closing the mega shelter, hetransferred to Kuentze, Texas to help outwith the ARC and FIMA warehouse –loading and unloading 100 plus 53 footsemi trucks daily. These trucks deliv-ered to food banks and homeless sheltersall over Texas and Louisiana.

“I was impressed that even in difficultsituations everyone worked together andgave 200 percent without complaining. Igot to meet volunteers from every state,which was a great experience,” Brendonrecalled. “As you know the ARC is anon-profit that relies on private dona-tions. Funds have been depleted by anactive year (Hurricane Ike and Gustav,California wild fires, etc). I would urgepeople to donate time or money to theirlocal Red Cross because of the greatwork this organization provides to oth-ers in their time of need. I know many ofour members are still recovering fromthe strike, but I just think what if thishappened to your family?”

Brendon is just one of the many mem-bers who found ways to give back to thecommunity and help others during ourstrike - proof of the tremendous roleMachinists play in the community.

The Organizing Department has beenvery busy over the past few months help-ing workers gain Union representation.Employees at Solid Ground, Doss Avia-

tion, and the City of Woodinville all

voted to have the IAM provide Union

representation. The Union is currently

meeting to hammer out a first agreement

at all three employers.

On September 3, 2008 the NationalLabor Relations Board (NLRB - the gov-ernment agency that covers private sectoremployees) certified a Union Representa-tion election for a new bargaining unit foremployees at Solid Ground. The results ofthe election was unanimous for IAM Dis-trict 751. This Company is a subcontractorof Metro Transit, which provides access/transportation for individuals with specialneeds. Workers we now represent overseedriver routes and activities on a daily basisensuring the safest and best service pos-sible. Business Rep Ron Bradley has beenassigned lead negotiator on this projectwith Business Rep Heather Barstow andOrganizer Jesse Cote assisting.

Doss Aviation is a Service Contractemployer at the Ft. Lewis and Yakima

firing range providing aircraft servicesto Army aircraft. The workers there ap-proached IAM District 751 looking forprofessional representation and strengthin bargaining a good agreement. Theyheard about the IAM through other work-ers on the base that have IAM collectivebargaining agreements. On September28th, the NLRB certified this new bar-gaining unit for IAM District 751. While

the first contract is being negotiated, the

Union was able to secure a pay increase

for the workers in the meantime. IAMSpecial Rep Kevin Cummings has beenassigned by General Vice President LeePearson to head these negotiations andOrganizer Jesse Cote has been assignedby District 751 President/Directing Busi-ness Rep Tom Wroblewski to assist.

In the City of Woodinville employeesvoted in two separate elections overwhelm-ingly supporting IAM District 751 to be-come a Union workforce. The Public Em-ployees Relations Commission (PERC -state government agency covering public

sector employees) certified all full-timeand regular part-time supervisors on Octo-ber 16, 2008. The second bargaining unitelection was certified on October 29thcovering all full-time and regular part-timeemployees including facilities maintenanceworkers I and II in Public Works. Some ofthe different classifications consist of main-tenance workers, permit technicians, rec-reation coordinator, planner, building in-spectors, engineers, GIS analyst, code en-forcement, administrative assistants, ac-counting and supervisors. This is a very

diverse group of occupations white andblue collar throughout the two units. Al-though this proves to be challenging toidentify and address all issues, it demon-strates that all workers are making an effortto be union represented and the IAM canhelp any worker groups obtain it. BusinessRep Jon Holden is the lead negotiator withOrganizers Jackie Boschok and Jesse Coteassisting with these first contract negotia-tions.

All of these different and diverseworkforces have decided on the Machin-ists Union District 751 for dignity andrespect on the job. They are now lookingfor a legal binding contract in respect totheir wages, hours and working condi-tions. “You have to be proud of theseworkers standing up for their rights. Ittakes guts since many employers coerce,intimidate and threaten groups to staynon-union. Each of these negotiationswill have their own sets of challenges toovercome, but with the quality teamsthat have been assigned we hope for thebest outcome for each,” stated 751 Dis-trict President Tom Wroblewski. “I wantto thank all of the volunteers from Dis-trict 751 that helped on these projects ITTAKES ALL OF US to be successful.”

Workers Say Yes to 751 Union Representation

When the silk screen shop in Everetthad a temporary supervisor, Union Stew-ard Cindy Ha helped educate that super-visor on Section 6.9 Report Time in ourcontract and ensured that six memberswere paid for their entire shift per thecontract.

The incident occurred when one ofthe machines in the shop was taken out ofservice for certification. The temporarysupervisor gave different instructions tovarious members of the crew – tellingsome they had to go home either withoutpay or using sick leave or vacation. As aSteward, Cindy knew about Report Time,which ensures if a member reports forwork as instructed and is subsequentlysent home, they will be paid for eighthours. Knowing that the importance ofconsistency, Cindy questioned the ac-tions and pointed to report time.

Cindy recalled, “At that time, we hadmany new people who did not have ben-

efits to cover the time. They asked if theycould work in another area and were toldno. Without vacation or sick leave, theywould have taken the time without pay,which they couldn’t afford to do. Othermembers burned up vacation or sickleave simply because a machine wasbeing certified. I knew this wasn’t rightand continued to pursue it.”

Business Rep Heather Barstow as-sisted Cindy in writing the grievance andelevating it to the proper level for resolu-tion. Once they reviewed the facts,Boeing agreed to pay report time to thesix members and reinstated vacation forthose who had used their benefits tocover the time.

Cindy added, “I am very appreciativeof the assistance from Business RepHeather Barstow in working this griev-ance. Report time is in the contract Boeingsigned and they must abide by it.”
