AMBITIOUS COMHALTASPROPOSAL SEEKS MUSIC
ACCESS FOR ALL CHILDRENBy Christy Parker
COMHALTAS Craobh Eochaille (Youghal Comhaltas) is seekingto establish a scheme whereby access to music education is provid-ed for every child in east Cork. Called Irish Traditional MusicEducational Service (ITMES), Craobh Eochaille chairmanMicheal de Buitleir also wants to establish a local, pilot version ofthe scheme (LITMES) over three years, before rolling out thewider version. Craobh Eochaille has written to Youghal Town Council and otherregional public institutions for support, while Cork CountyCouncil and several school principals have already agreed to backthe idea. Mr. Buitleir says the proposal complies with the vision ofthe Cork County Development Board (CDB) in its IntegratedStrategy for the county’s Economic, Social & CulturalDevelopment’.Bru na Si,Craobh Eochaille’s own base and education centre, is athriving tourism and cultural facility and Mr. De Buitleir contendsthat, as a community-based, voluntary organisation, it is ideallyplaced to initiate the plan. He reflects that it already providesmusic tuition at eight local national schools as well as runningadult courses.Yet while Bru na Si delivers an intense programme of specialistinstrument training, the chairman says it still needs "increasedmanagerial capability and skills delivery. The proposed LocalITMES would function as Bru na Si’s second stage developmentand meet this requirement. The three-year local pilot project would subsequently assist in set-ting up the countywide ITMES, which would run under the aus-pices of the CDB and be linked to Cork County Council’s Directorof Community and Enterprise", says Micheal. Further explaining his strategy, Micheal says, "It is prudent to firstcall on partners that have already supported us, such as councils,ECAD, Comhaltas Meitheal, schools and corporate sponsors.Other bodies, like the VEC and UCC, could be invited to con-tribute thereafter". He adds, "An integrated approach would givevalue for money and recognise a local, organically driven resourcethat has blossomed through huge voluntary effort and public fund-ing"The support of Youghal Town Council and other local bodies isconsidered crucial to kick-start the initiative while Micheal con-cludes, "A comprehensive business case will soon be presentedand input and observations will be very welcome."

Revins officially opened the Sli na Slaintewalk from the Mall House to the Front Strand Car Park recently. This involved the erection of appropriate signage marking theroute and showing the 1km and 2km positions. It is hoped thatsubstantial numbers of people will use the designated walkway asenvisaged. WATER & SEWERS:1. The reservoirs are at full storage capacity with the average dailydemand now increasing to an average of 620,000 gallons per daycurrently. 2. I am currently unaware of any problems with the waste watersystem and all pumphouses are operating satisfactorily. As in pre-vious hot summers and because Youghal is swelled with a tourismpopulation, citizens are asked to use water conciencously. PLANNING & DEVELOPMENT: 1. The grant of planning permission by Youghal Town Council toCrowley Homes for the construction of 12 eco friendly houses atYoughal Lands off of Windmill Hill has been appealed to An BordPleanala. Subsequently a decision will issue from An BordPleanala in due course on the matter. 2. A special meeting of the Council is scheduled for Monday 16thJuly next where a presentation will be given to the members byGalvin Developments in relation to a proposed development fortheir site which is the site of the old Couristan Carpets Factory atIndian Point, Mill Road, Youghal. Should this presentation be suc-cessful the members of Youghal Town Council will be required tovary the 2003 Development Plan to accommodate the proposeddevelopment by Galvin Developments. 3. A new Residents Association has been set up by the residents ofArd na Mara, Magners Hill. Works should com-mence on some of these projects on the Estate shortly. The formaltaking in charge of the estate is set for tonight’s meeting andshould be completed by the end of October next. 2. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the 240,000grant from Cork County Council towards the HeritageRegeneration Project. This money represents 120,000 for 2006 &120,000 for 2007 and will greatly aid the advancement of theproject on the ground. 3. I would also like to welcome the grant aid of 124,852.16 fromthe County Council for the completion of footpaths at ClaycastleRoad and Car Park. This is a very welcome contribution and willcertainly add to the infrastructure of the area.
Deputation from the Disability Action/Awareness Group. The newly formed Disability Action/Awareness Group presenteda number of outstanding issues to the Youghal Council. Theybegan by listing what they called the happy and unhappy aspects
to disability and parking in town. Sarah Walsh, who gave the pres-entation, praised the Council for colouring the spaces blue, there-by making the spaces more visible. They also praised traffic war-den, Tommy Roche for his ’brilliant’ work and the gardai for theirdiligence. The group is mainly unhappy about the abuse bymotorists of disabled spaces. The main objective of the group is toraise awareness with the public. To achieve this, the group is ask-ing for more clearly marked signs and erecting posters at mostcommonly abused spaces. They would also like to see fines clear-ly visible. Presenter, Sarah Walsh stated that most people park ondisabled spaces for a few minutes and that a more visible aware-ness would help change attitudes. The presentation also showedmembers just how difficult parking can be, even within the spaces, with some vehicles needing extra room for wheelchair loading andoff-loading. According to the group, a number of extra spaces arealso needed with some current spaces in inappropriate places. Thedeputation was very warmly received by the Council memberswho gave their support to the group’s proposals.
1. Votes of Congratulations.Cllr. Hennessy offered congratulations to all involved in St.Raphael’s Open Day. She also expressed best wishes to Cllr.McLellan, which was unanimously supported by the chamber.Cllr. Revins congratulated the Waterford hurlers on their victorylast Sunday. "We look forward to meeting them in the real final,"he added.
2. Town Foreman’s Report. Cllr. Burke asked that weeds, ’a metre high’, be cut by NorthAbbey graveyard. He added that a fence by Cherryvale had col-lapsed and the area is now being used as a shortcut. He said a ’bigiron bar’ had been thrown across the gardens of nos. 6 and 7 in theestate. He concluded by suggesting that the eastern walls of GreenPark be painted as they are in a shabby state. Cllr. Linehan-Foleyventured the proposal that a disabled ramp be fitted to the jetty forgetting on and off boats. The Town Clerk said it would need inves-tigation as to how a ramp would work. Cllr. Casey remarked thatsuch ramps are typically associated with marinas. Cllr. Linehan-Foley added ’weeds are all over town’. While recognising theefforts of Council staff she asked that the weeds be removed. Shecited pot holes in the car park behind Quays bar as in need ofattention. The Cllr. then said she felt ’strongly’ about the need formore defibulators in town. She suggested that the Chamber ofCommerce might provide one on the Main St. while the Councilshould provide one at the Town Hall. True to her direct sense ofhumour, the Cllr concluded by praising the Town Clerk for all his’wonderful work’ but ’could he do anything about the weather’?Cllr. Revins requested a tidying up of the Gas Works exterior. Cllr.Murray stated she had received ’a lot of complaints’ about the pub-lic toilets in Market Square, which, she said, are in a ’disgracefulstate’. She also cited a number of visually unwelcome aspects toPriory Court including unkept gardens, graffiti and two ’unoccu-pied, unsightly’ houses. Cllr. Casey noted a persistent litter problem due to the abuse ofsmall bins. He said the problem is especially bad in the earlymorning with the presence of crows. He suggested the Councillook at alternative bins to help solve the problem. This issue foundequal irritation with Cllr. Beecher who added that, along with dogfowling, those responsible ’must be caught’. He added that a dis-abled parking space is required at the top of Raheen Park estate forresidents. He then remarked that the backdoors of houses atDermot Hurley need upgrading. "You can fit your finger in thegaps of the doors," he said. Cllr. Hennessy informed members thata newly erected railing at the town walls sallyport is loose andneeds resetting. Mayor Savage revisited the litter issue to remindCouncillors that ’Youghal has litter free status’. He concluded thatthe Council should ’look again’ at the possibility of a pedestriancrossing at Greencloyne due to the popular use of the playgroundthere.
YOUGHAL TOWN COUNCIL JULY MEETING
Youghal News.....July 12th 2007
Youghal Town Council July Meeting3. Cork County Council ItemsReport by Cllr. Murray. The Cllr. told members that water metershave been installed ’without much disruption’ and that broadband is tofollow. She listed a number of events being organised for Youghallibrary, mostly children’s activities. A grant of 175,000 is availableto primary schools for the purchasing of books, according to the Cllr.with Cork County Council financing the initiative. Other Issues. Cllr. Linehan-Foley said Triathlon organisers are ’very happy’ with theroad surface in the strand area and are hoping for Cork CountyCouncil to leave it as it is prior to the event. Cllr. Burke said there wasa ’serious issue in Store Street’ that needed attention. He informed theCouncil a contractor had damaged a water main and Youghal Mealson Wheels were unable to provide meals to the elderly. He said thewater supply had been cut from 11.30 and had not been reconnectedby 4.30. The Cllr. requested an immediate response from the CountyCouncil. He then referred to the ’appalling condition’ of the Youghallandfill site road asking that it be repaired. The Town Engineer repliedthat the ESB must first install supply in the area before the resurfac-ing can be carried out. The Cllr. then revisited the front strand outfallproblem asking the County Council if they will match the 30,000committed by Youghal Town Council to have the outfall extended. The County Manager said it was his understanding that the work isdue to begin in 2008 and Cork County Council ’will not be foundwanting’, before adding that he would try to ’speed up the process’ toensure an early start to the work next year. Cllr. Burke again lament-ed the conditions in Sruthain na Saille citing the long grass, statingthat while all other areas get grass cutting, the estate has not yet beenattended to. Cllr. Murray remarked that the type of grass there couldcatch fire in a hot spell, before adding that the work requires a tractor. She also stated that she had asked Engineer, Jack MacCarthy about itand he replied that he ’does not cut grass’, Cllr. Casey asked if thatmeant Youghal Town Council staff are working for Cork CountyCouncil. The Town Clerk said the Council endeavours to ’maintain all areas ofthe town’. Cllr. Casey retorted. "Maybe Cork County Council shouldbe paying us." Cllr. Burke then asked if any progress was being madeon the structural issues at Moll Goggin’s corner. The Town Engineersaid. "Consultants have been appointed but there will be no work thisyear." The County Manager added that an on site inspection would becarried out soon. Cllr. Burke concluded that the footpaths in TallowStreet are in bad repair. Cllr. Revins requested an update on hismotion to have a section of the Claycastle car park closed at night bya gate to prevent boy racers from using the area. He also said a jeephad been burned out at Pilmore. The Town Clerk expressed the viewthat the onus is on the gardai, not the local authority’. He added thatenforcement is not being carried out. Cllr. Revins stated that the car-avan sites are now full and people cannot sleep with the noise. The Town Clerk said the problem was the same as anti-social behav-iour. "You are just shifting the problem somewhere else. You will onlysee a reduction when we have proper enforcement, " he said. TheTown Clerk forcefully restated his belief that measures were too oftenapplied to suit the minority. "It’s about time the silent majority hadtheir say. Why do we have to respond to minorities all the time? Thegardai do a good job but there is a problem when it comes to minorissues," he said. Cllr. Beecher said a national ban on noisy exhaustsshould be adopted. Mayor Savage suggested writing to theSuperintendent reminding him of his ’commitment’ to tackle the prob-lem. Cllr. Casey advised that areas of the slob bank are in danger of ’beingbreached in a storm’. He asked when broadband would be rolled outin Youghal and noted the strange phenomenon of a low frequency sig-nal interfering with push button car keys, which, he said, was affect-ing the Mall area in particular. "You can’t lock your car at times," hesaid. Cllr. Beecher complained that despite new laws against roadsidecar selling, cars are still being set up for sale at Dolphin’s Square. Healso wanted to know if a derelict site notice had being issued to theowners of the property opposite the League of the Cross building. Hestated the odour from the Youghal landfill site ’is poisonous’ andasked when would the super-loo be arriving for Claycastle. He thenrevisited his demand for a speed limit change in the Cock and Bullarea. The Town Engineer said it was ’all systems go’ regarding thespeed limit change. Cllr. Beecher concluded by asking if the Engineerhad found the owner of kilnatoora property with the ’dangerous over-growth’ problem. The engineer said he has still not ascertained who
still not ascertained who the owner is. "I have a number of names andI will pursue it," he promised. "I have full faith in you," Cllr. Beecherassured him. Cllr. Murray asked that the proposed library site becleaned of weeds. The Engineer said he has now got a key to thepremises and a clean up will be carried out. Cllr. Murray also raiseda problem of overgrowth on a path at Summerfield and the mound ofdirt at Shannavine. She then praised the ’swiftness’ to whichTravellers had been ’moved on’ from town recently. The Mayor alsosaid that he had contacted the County Council and ’asked for some-thing to be done about this’ and was pleased with the quickness of theresponse. Cllr. Beecher also offered his appreciation to the CountyCouncil and the Town Clerk on ’acting swiftly to remove theTravellers’. Cllr. Linehan-Foley asked if ’there is any chance of clean-ing the graffiti off the slob bank sluice?’ adding that when you drivealong the Breton Road ’all you can see is two big eyes looking at you’.Cllr. Savage expressed the view that the odour from the landfill siteis ’not from the heat’ and had noticed there is ’an inordinate amountof flies around’. On the issue of the foul odour emanating from thedump, the County Manager said the County Council has ’made cer-tain changes by redirecting waste water sludge’. He added ’all mate-rials are handled carefully’ and they are ’looking for more sustainableroutes’. On other issues, he said that a super-loo for Claycastle is nota priority and he believes both Councils should look toward sharingworkloads and co-operating to ’improve the level of services’. 4. Mayor’s Business. The Mayor informed members that Sr. Maura had sent a card thank-ing the Council for the recent civic reception held in her honour. 5. Flood Relief Scheme Correspondence. The Town Clerk informed members that the department has request-ed a report from the Council outlining the effects of flooding inYoughal such as the number of houses damaged and the extent andfrequency of flooding in the area. Cllr. Casey said it is ’well docu-mented how much flooding is in Youghal’. "We here in Youghal havesuffered regularly. This is an urgent matter and we should proceedwith it rapidly," he added. 6. Heritage Island Proposal - Ireland’s Visitor Attractions. The Town Clerk displayed brochures produced by Heritage Island toCouncillors informing them that the cost of advertising Youghal inthe magazine would be 1,800. The magazine’s ability to advertiseinternationally was greeted with favour by the chamber. Cllr. Revinssaid. "We should run with this and make it part of the Heritage Plan.Cllr. Murray said she thought the Chamber of Commerce ’have paidmembership this year’. "Do we need to pay as well?" she asked. TheTown Clerk replied. "We are applying for 2008. The onus is onYoughal Town Council to take ownership." The Mayor was alsoenthusiastic saying the Council ’had a great opportunity to get in fornext season’. He said other agencies such as Cork/Kerry tourism wereoften ’too late’ in the season when coming forth with marketing.7. Motion in the name of Cllr. Casey seconded by Cllr. Burke. "That this Council erects a sculpture of bronze or stone to mark thecontribution of the fishermen and their families to the heritage andculture of Youghal. That the sculpture be of a salmon yawl with oarsand nets". Speaking on this motion Cllr. Casey said. "The contribu-tion of fishermen to Youghal has been enormous and it has been takenaway at the stroke of a pen. Over the years their families workedextremely hard in terrible conditions. These were large families onsmall incomes and it is about time that their contribution was recog-nised." Cllr. Burke supported the motion and added. "The salmonfishermen have made a huge contribution to the heritage and eco-nomic development of the town. In the pre-industrial period fisherieswas the only industry in Youghal. Many of the fishermen formed thecore of the lifeboat service, people such as the Hennessys, theHickeys and the Murphys as well as the boat building Buttimers."Both Cllrs. Linehan-Foley and Cllr. Revins expressed praise for themotion while Cllr. Beecher remarked that it is ’right and fitting torecognise the men and women who went out on rough waters’ tocatch salmon from the ’world famous Blackwater’. 8. Any Other Business. Cllr. Casey was raising the issue of traffic dangers at RaheenPark/Sarsfield Terrace when he was informed by the Town Clerk thatplans for an overhaul are in placeCllr. Linehan-Foley expressed the view that ’a ban be put in place fora certain breed of dog. "We should write to the relevant departmentand declare that we want a ban," she said. She warned that dogsreared for fighting are loose on the beach.

Annual Summer CampThe annual summer camp was held in the club grounds last weekwith over 120 kids’ boys and girls involved. Ages ranged from 7-14 years of age and again this year it was a great success. The onlyaspect of course to dampen things was the weather. One day hadto be cancelled due to the persistent rain, which is the first time inthe five years of the camps that a day had to be cancelled. I wouldlike to thank Billy Cotter who co-ordinated the camp with the FAIand Sally O’Sullivan who helped out throughout the week. Alsothe coaches, for their time and enthusiasm during the week.Volunteers RequiredThe club at the moment are having difficulty in getting peopleinvolved in helping out with the younger kids aged 7-10. For par-ents or people willing to help, it is very enjoyable coaching thesekids. At the moment there are too many kids for the amount ofcoaches involved with these age groups. But the simple fact is thattwo people cannot train fifty or sixty kids. We need people to getinvolved. The club are now actively asking people to help out forjust one hour a week. This hour can be organised to suit the peo-ple involved any evening or at the weekend.Training will be pro-vided to everyone willing to help. Due to regulations within theFAI, all kid’s teams must have two adults present at all timeswhich the club will be strictly putting into place.Dog Foul - Dog BanI am sorry to say that the club have to introduce a total ban on dogsbeing let free or walked by there owners in the clubs grounds atArdrath Park. This is because of a very serious health and safetyissue that has being getting progressively worse over the last year. The amount of dog foul that is on the clubs pitches and trainingfacilities is totally unacceptable. A lot of dog owners are bringingthere dogs into the grounds and letting them free and don’t seemto care about the fouling.Dog foul is a very serious hazard to play-ers who, if they get it in there eyes can be blinded in certain cir-cumstances. Also this goes for our FAS guys who when cutting thegrass. Another aspect is that it just isn’t nice for an eleven year oldto fall on the ground while playing a game and, get destroyed indog foul which has happened. Also a referee can call off a game ifhe deems the pitch to be a health hazard to the players because offoul. Signs are in the process of being erected notifying people ofthe ban. Please respect them as it will be strictly enforced.Advertising SignsThe club are in the process of writing to businesses that don’t havean advertising sign in the club grounds. People are being asked tosee if they would be interested in erecting a sign to advertise therebusiness. The cost will be 150 a year rental charge which is only3 a week. The first 150 would cover the cost of the sign anderecting it. This would allow up to three main colours on the signand would be a standard 8 ft by 2 ft. Every year there after wouldbe rental charge. Anyone who has an interest can contact DamienO’Brien on 086-1988526.Fallen TreesLast Wednesday evening saw the felling of two mature trees onthe Windmill Hill side of the grounds. The bordering ditchbetween the grounds and Seaview Place is where they came downdue to the ferocious winds at about 6pm. These trees fell into twoadjacent gardens. The club are in the process of organising in con-junction with the residents tree surgeons to remove the fallentrees. Thankfully nobody was hurt in the incident.All-Weather Pitch The clubs all-weather pitch is available for hire at 25 per hour forfive a side pitch or 50 for a full pitch. The man to contact is Chrison 086-3461540.ManagersThe club are looking for people who are interested in managingthe clubs junior team to contact them over the next week as theentering of teams has to be finalised over the next ten days. Alsothere are a couple of kid’s teams that the club are looking for man-agers for. Again, anyone interested please contact anyone withinthe club.

The edu-cation they received here was invaluable in instilling in them asense of pride and preservation for Ireland’s unique musical cul-ture. Without this important foundation, many of them would notbe where you see them today. Dancing Thru the Ages is a won-derful showcase of the very best of local and national talent andwe extend an invite to locals and tourists alike to witness Irish tra-ditional culture at its best. The cast of Dancing Thru the Ages demonstrates how success canreach anyone, no matter where they are from, and they are aninspiration to all those wishing to emulate what they do. Dancing Thru the Ages accomplishes what few others have tried:to fuse the ancestral legacy of Irish culture and tradition with anexciting contemporary one, without losing the spirit and exuber-ance so associated with the Irish style of music and dance. Theinteraction between band members and dancers during the per-formance is very special as it is a genuine display of enjoymentand fun and it mirrors the relationships forged many years agothrough music, song and dance. That sense of togetherness andcommunity is an integral part of traditional Irish culture and is anintegral part of our Show. Tourist Guide to Services & Shopping in YoughalInternational Quilt Competition
For the past four years, as part of the Youghal Celebrates Historyend of summer festival, an International Quilt Competition hasbeen held in St. Mary’s Collegiate Church.Since its inception, the competition has gone from strength tostrength, growing each year in terms of the number of entrants andin the quality of their entries. It has thus become one of theregion’s most important showcases for the craft. Last year’s competition was won by the Ungemach sisters fromthe US, Janet Parker, Joan Brumbach and Lee Baszczewsk - affec-tionately known as the ’YaYa’s’.The sisters had travelled to Youghal the previous year as part of acontingent of performers involved in the 2005 Youghal CelebratesHistory Festival, ’The Life and Times of Sir Walter Raleigh’.’Throughout our Ireland visit, the citizens of Youghal went beyondhospitality to make their American visitors feel welcome,’ saidJoan who lives in Manteo.’We were particularly drawn to the Festival’s Quilt Exhibition atSt. Mary’s and decided to show our gratitude to our Irish hosts byentering the competition the following year.’The twinning of Manteo and Youghal provided the inspiration forthe sisters to link the towns in fabric and they set about creating afantasy scene of the two shores of Youghal and Manteo as viewedthrough the window of a ship’s captain’s quarters. The result- sen-sational.Joan remarked on the quilt, ’Any quilter knows, part of the processof creating a quilt is holding the image of the person - or persons, and in this case, a whole town - in your heart whilst working on it.All of y’all in Youghal have been in our hearts since we left andwe want to send you a very big "Thank You"!’
The theme of this year’s competition is ’Churches and Cloisters’and organisers anticipate that it will be the best yet. Some of the enquiries already received have been from the UnitedStates, Australia, Hungary and Britain - in addition to those of ourown talented quilt makers in Ireland. The competition will run from Sunday 23rd September - Sunday30th September and quilts will be exhibited in St. Mary’sCollegiate Church for that duration. Judging will take place on28th September, with prizes to the value of 1000.The closing date for all entries is 15th September 2007. Howeverthe Youghal Celebrates History Office asks that notices of intentbe submitted by the 21st July 2007. Full details can be found atwww.youghalcelebrateshistory.com

CEOLTA SI AG TEACHT ARISBy Christy Parker
The sun may be uncertain but Seisiun Ceolta Si can be trusted toshine every summer in Youghal. This year will be no exceptionand Comhaltas Craobh Eochaille’s annual show of traditionalmusic, song dance and storytelling is poised to brighten our skies. To mark the 25th anniversary of Comhaltas in Youghal, the groupwill perform 25 nights throughout the town this summer. The pro-duction team will be led by Daithi Kearney of UCC and formallyof Simsa Tire, in his third year with Ceolta Si. Ceolta Si has long supported fundraising causes and several suchgigs are scheduled for the coming weeks. Amongst the beneficiar-ies will be Youghal’s Cois Abhann Retirement Home while a con-cert for the Arusha Project in Tanzania will help ease hardship atthe further end of the global village. Meanwhile Youghal Scouts and Guides plan to celebrate their70th year at a Bru na Si night and several organisations are book-ing the Gazebo restaurant, Cork road, to experience the newly-established, innovative ’taste of Irish’ nights. Since acquiring its own home in 2004, the Ceolta Si group hasblossomed, adhering magnificently to the original, traditional val-ues of Irish music, song and dance. In sparing no effort to explorethe vast repertoire of traditional Irish tunes, the group regularlyresearches the national archives. The resultant performances from these dedicated exertions havebrought international recognition. Last April, the Irish Embassy inMexico chose Ceolta Si to represent Ireland at the highly presti-gious ’Ollinkan International World Cultures Festival, where theyalso delivered a lecture on Irish traditional music, its roots andsurvival. "It was a tremendous honour to be invited to representour country amongst so many global traditions but to be asked todeliver a lecture as well was the ultimate seal of approval", saysCeolta Si chairman Micheal de Buitleir. The Mexico adventure was preceded by another invited journey tothe Welsh Senate, where their performances were televised towelsh audiences. Other countries visited in recent times includeFrance, Italy and the Czech Republic. All funds generated Ceolta Si are re-invested in the branch whosework also includes music lessons for all ages, school outreach pro-grammes dancing classes a local radio show and various concerts. Its enterprises are co-ordinated from its purpose built headquartersand education centre at Bru na Si, Magniers Hill. To witness these talented exponents of traditional Irish culture thefollowing schedule applies to the end of August: Mondays, WalterRaleigh hotel, 8pm; Weds: ’A Taste of Irish’, Gazeborestaurant,8pm (024) 91373); Thurs: Bru na Si Magniers Hill(8pm) Tickets: Adults 10, children 5 from Youghal Touristoffice (024) 20170. It’s a small world..An Australian couple visiting Youghal tourist office with theYoughal relative they were staying with couldn’t believe their eyeswhen cousins from back home down under walked through thedoor. Neither couple knew the other was holidaying in Ireland."It was extraordinary that they should travel across to the otherside of the world and meet members of their own family quite bychance in this tiny crossroads called Youghal tourist informationoffice," said their host.It proves, yet again, that it’s a small world out there.
Youghal Tourist Information Centre and Shop had a very busyseason in 2006 and welcomed visitors from 30 different countries:France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Finland, Poland, Holland,Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Czech Republic, Hawaii, Scotland,Wales England, Northern Ireland, Israel, Canada, the US,Tasmania, Ecuador, Argentina, Malaysia, China, Japan, S. Africa,India, New Zealand, Australia.Obviously the majority of these visitors were from Britain, theUnited States, Australia, France, Spain and Germany. So far, in 2007, the office has been visited by people from theStates, Canada, Germany, France, England, Scotland, Wales,Switzerland and Italy.Last season there were increasing numbers from Scandinavia,Eastern Europe and the Far East and it will be interesting to see ifthis trend continues. There were also last season the intriguing’rarities’ - Ecuador, Israel and Malaysia, for example.Strangely, considering the direct all-year connection betweenCork and Amsterdam airports, there are few Dutch visitors andItalians come much less often than other Continentals - againdespite the direct connection between Cork and Rome. Our visitors’ book attracts many favourable comments aboutYoughal and its environs and there is a high number of repeat vis-its: a couple from Wales have been coming to Youghal every yearfor over 40 years.Naturally there are a few negatives: the condition of the public toi-lets in particular is a constant source of complaints, then there isthe lack of boat/bicycle hire facilities and the lack of proper moor-ing for visiting sailors. The Tourist Office & Shop is operated by Youghal Chamber ofCommerce & Tourism and the Chamber welcomes suggestionsand initiatives from the local community: the more we can offervisitors the more money is put back into the local economy.

YOUGHAL TOURIST TRAILThis tour will take about one hour. It starts at the Heritage Centre in theold market house which was built on reclaimed land on the site of themedieval harbour. The Heritage Centre will introduce you to the story ofYoughal and this trail will take You to see important landmarks in thatstory.
(1) Water GateThis Water Gate was built in the 13th century to provide access throughthe town walls to the docks. It is still known as Cromwell’s Arch, as thisis the place from which Oliver Cromwell left Ireland in 1650.(2) Clock GateThis is the third gate on this site in the town walls and was completed in1777. The tower was used as the town gaol until the mid-19th century.Prisoners were executed by hanging from the windows.(3) Main Street and ShopsThe fronts of the buildings on the Main Street are stepped to follow thecurve of the original shoreline. Many fine examples of 19th centuryshopfronts survive today.(4) St. John’s PrioryThe Priory was founded in 1350. Small portions still survive, includingthe door arch and small window on the street front.5) The Red HouseThe Red House was built in the early 18th century for the Uniacke fami-ly. It is reputed to be the only example of the Dutch or Queen Anne styletown house continuing in use as a private dwelling in Ireland.(6) Tynte’s CastleThis 15th century Norman tower was used by a local merchant family asa house and as a store for valuable goods. It is unusual to have such a for-tified dwelling built inside the town walls. Sir Robert Tynte owned thetower in the early 17th century - he married the widow of the poetEdmund Spenser.
(7) Alms HousesThese houses were built in 1610 by Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork, forsix old soldiers. The soldiers received a pension of £5 per annum. Someof the houses were altered in the mid-19th century.(8) Shalom HouseThe Protestant Asylum was built in 1838 by the Protestant Relief Societyto provide rooms for the homeless. It was renovated in 1992 to providesheltered housing and was renamed Shalom House(9) Myrtle GroveThis attractive house was the home of Sir Walter Raleigh when he wasresident in Youghal. It was purchased by Richard Boyle, first Earl of Cork,in 1602. It is a fine example of a late medieval dwelling. (Restricted open-ing times, please contact the Tourist Information Office).(10) St. Mary’s Collegiate ChurchThe church was built in 1220 and extended in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is one of the few parish churches of the period still in use in Ireland. Ithas a fascinating history which is fully illustrated in the church.(11) Town WallsThe first record of the town walls is a charter of 1275, granted by KingEdward I, for their repair and extension. The walls surrounded the/townon the shoreline as well as inland. Most of the inland portion still survivestoday. A good vantage point is in the grounds of St. Mary’s CollegiateChurch.(12) The CollegeThe College was founded in 1464 by Thomas Fitzgerald, 7th Earl ofDesmond. It was referred to as the University of the City of Youghal in aLetter from Pope Innocent VIII in 1492. It ceased to function in the late16th century and very little of the original building remains today.
Completion of the Town TrailOur Trail finishes at the College gates. You can explore the small lanesand backstreets of Youghal or return to the Heritage Centre by the route you havecome.

YOUGHAL MOTHER ANDDAUGHTER FOR SRI
LANKA MERCY MISSION.By Christy Parker
A Youghal mother and daughter are preparing to bring hope andkindness to the lives of young orphans when they fly out to SriLankan later this month. Joan and Lucy Collins, mother anddaughter respectively of popular CRY presenter Tommy, departfor Asia on the 21st for a fortnight’s voluntary work at the VajiraSri Rehabilitation Centre in the capital Colombo. The pair, from Ballymacask, Quarry Rd., are travelling via theDungarvan branch of i-to-i, the volunteer travel company that hassent over 40,000 voluntary workers to work on community proj-ects across 34 countries since 1999. They will pay their own costsof approximately 5,000, for which contributions, however small, are welcome. The trip follows a visit last year by i-to-i coordinator JennyBeresford to her former school Ard Scoil na Deise, Dungarvan, where Joan and Tommy are teachers and where Lucy, now a col-lege student attended school. Lucy struck up a friendship withJenny and later opted to travel. Music teacher Joan had long har-boured a similar ambition and seized the moment when Jennysuggested she go too. The Vajira Sri Rehabilitation Centre, in western Sri Lanka, wasestablished as a shelter for approximately 100 orphans of the pro-longed civil war raging mostly in the northern regions. Followingthe 2004 tsunami, however, is has became the only home to over370 children. Their two-week project also includes "an Irish mother and her 16year-old son and two 20 year-old women from England andAmerica", says Joan. "After a day’s induction, we will work 9-5,Monday to Friday, assisting with sports and games, teachingmusic, dance, painting, computer literacy and developing social
and other skills to increase employability. During the eveningswe’ll teach English." On such voluntary gesture does the much ofworld’s disadvantaged rely and Joan’s fears seem trivial when sheadmits to worrying about "the tropical climate and insects" thatmay find her Youghal blood irresistible! A celiac, she has foodconsiderations to but feels the predominantly rice diet will meetrequirements. Yet, the biggest trepidation is psychological. Joan helped foundthe Youghal Chernobyl group and was actively involved for sev-eral years. Hence she knows well the emotional tightrope that isboth the high and hazard of working with disadvantaged children."I’m frightened that I’ll get attached and want to bring them allback with me!", she predicts wistfully. To help finance their trip, Joan and Lucy are hosting a coffee-with-music afternoon in her home in Ballymacask on Sunday next(15th) from 3-6pm. Her Ard Scoil students will provide the musicbut financial notes -or coins- towards the trip would also be muchappreciated. "We’d welcome any small musical instruments thatwe can bring with us for the children too", Joan adds. Seldom hasmusic been more profoundly ’the food of love’. Information/dona-tions: (024) 92937

DRUGS PROJECTSWORKER FOR YOUGHAL
Gordon Kinsley displays an infectious enthusiasm. His energy isexpansive and it will need to be. His repertoire of skills will be putto the test and his sharp optimism is set to meet many a dullshield. The challenge ahead is as broad as it is deep. He is thenewly appointed Drugs Projects Worker for Youghal. He headsthe Youghal Community Drugs Initiative and it is the first govern-ment funded scheme of its type in the town. It’s a project thatYoughal and many other towns have been crying out for. Hisarrival has brought relief to many agencies who have struggled tofind a way into the mire that is drug and alcohol abuse amongstthe young. The Youghal Community Drugs Initiative will work in associationwith Foroige and the Youghal Youth Committee. The initiative ispart of the developing response to drug and alcohol abuse beingtackled by the Southern Regional Drugs Task-force, which has setup sixteen committees so far. Gordon believes that his portfoliowill only grow larger as the initiative embeds itself in the commu-nity. His immediate concerns are directed to making initial con-tacts. "Every town and village in Ireland has experience of drugsand alcohol abuse. Kids are taking drugs at a younger age and withthe Celtic Tiger they have more money to spend. I have sent let-ters to all the clubs, to the doctors and pharmacists, I will meetwith the school and talk to publicans and I have contacted somebusinesses. All of this is down the line at the moment and myimmediate goal is to make contact with users and those who areunder the radar," he said. Gordon has over a decade of experienceworking in youth and community development work, severalyears of which he spent at Pathways, Cork. After working closely with kids who are homeless at one time oranother and passing through the system of residential care onesenses his relief of finally getting his teeth into the sort of prob-lems that bring these kids into that world. "I have twelve yearsexperience with 14-18 year olds with issues of homelessness but Ihave a passion for this job." he said. Asked how he envisages getting close to the kids he explained."Before we even get to the issues of drug and alcohol use I will belistening and befriending and then exploring their drug use. Youhave to meet them at their level, see them through their hearts andminds. I will go with what I’m presented, work with them to maketheir lives manageable. If it gets to the stage where they contem-plate change we will look at how to get into treatment." A permanent office is not yet secured but Gordon is looking to theimmediate future and that means clients. "I will be doing a lot ofwork on the ground. That means one to one meetings. Early inter-vention is very, very important. A lot of users get caught in the system and it becomes a revolvingdoor, when that happens it’s often too late. We will be dealing withusers and high risk users between the ages of 14 - 23 years.Making contact with them in a small community like Youghal hasa great knock on effect. As the initiative grows we will also look to reintegrate users backinto the community. These are people who have been through thesystem, who might be in danger of relapse and in that way our roleis two-fold." He knows Youghal well having lived in the town fornine years. Home grown judgments will not be made. "Focus onthe solution, not the problem," he said. The challenge is broad and it is deep. His vision remains uncloud-ed about drug and alcohol abuse in the town, an open case book isan open mind with an eye to the long view. "Change is a process, not an event. It will be a drip, drip effect." he concluded.

BAR ROOM BRICKBOLSTERS DEBATE
By Christy ParkerIn terms of preserving Youghal’s heritage it may not rank as mag-nificently as restoring a wall or resurrecting an ancient graveyardso to speak, but a single brick has inspired considerable reflectionamidst the contemplative clientele of Tynan’s bar. The debated brick is inscribed ’Youghal Brick Company Ld -Youghal’. The company ceased trading about 200 years ago but asthe brick hails from the oldest part of town it is probably mucholder. This and much relevant information has been traded since itsarrival on the premises. The brick spent most of its lengthy life as part of a chimneyattached to Joe Green’s pub, nowadays Mackey’s. Having spent99% of its life in the vicinity of a bar, it is glazed and very red-faced but in this case amazingly intact and well preserved. Having survived all weathers, it was dispatched from its wateringhole when builder David O’Callaghan’s employee Mick O’Connellwas helping to demolish the 50ft chimney. Quaintly bestowing afemale gender on the sturdy artefact, Mick says, "she came fromBlyda", a local yellow-clay region and was one of only twoinscribed bricks amongst the seven tons that was knocked "She’dbe good for another 200 years", Mick adds. The earthy lady is extremely heavy for her standard size and, inFrank Tynan’s words ’you couldn’t lift her with one hand.’Nonetheless, Mick somehow managed to bring her ’sister’ homefor safe keeping. While such bricks are now barred from house building, the ex-Mackey’s stalwart is now firmly embedded in Tynan’s establish-ment. Mick encased her in a wall of the smoking area, where shewill no doubt appreciate a return to her old habit. Curious callershave been dropping by to view the Red Lady of Tynan’s and Mickplans to encase her in glass to protect her from Coincidently she reclines only a trowel removed from several, similar ’cousins’ once installed during repair work on an arch lead-ing to Tynte’s Castle. They appear to be constantly plasteredthough.

Youghal Achieves Litter-Free Status in IBAL PollCampaign Group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL), whorecently carried out a poll of the cleanliness of 50 towns and citiesacross the country, found Youghal to be among the 18 towns whoachieved litter-free status. The impression of a town is colouredhugely by what one encounters on approaching it, said IBALchairman Tom Cavanagh. The survey was carried out by heritagegroup An Taisce which found that just 36% of the towns surveyedcould be classed as litter-free (Youghal included). 19 places wereclassed as being moderately littered, littered status went to ninetowns and cities, six were named as having a serious litter prob-lem and two towns - Navan and Newbridge - had the unflatteringlabel of litter blackspots. IBAL said Irelands average cleanli-ness rating is now 75 points and within sight of the 80 point mark, which is deemed clean to European norms.Anyone who has an hour to spare and is interested in helping the YoughalTidy Towns committee with planting and weeding would be more thanwelcome. The Irish Senior Team
Hugh O’Rorke, SALC Rep. Ireland Fed. Sea Anglers presents the Gold Cup toNorman Berry and the winning England Team
Donal Domeney, Chairman Munster Council presents the gold cup to JoyceRogers, Manager of the England Junior Team
By Christy Parker Youghal cast a benign impression on a couple of hundred visitorslast week when the town helped facilitate the 2007 ’HomeCountries’ International Shore Angling Championship. The two-day event (plus one practice day) brought over 100 fishermen, friends and families to the region, where the waters fished includ-ed Caliso Bay and Ferry Point up to Marloag Point (East Ferry),Ballybrannigan Strand (near Whitegate) and Monkstown Wall. The hub of activity was the fully-booked Walter Raleigh hotel, where Kieran Kidney, a former Irish International angler, Marinecorrespondent with Youghal local radio and PRO of the YoughalBass Club found "unanimous praise from all quarters from both afishing and tourism perspective. The scenery and the friendlinessof the people in the area was very much remarked upon," he adds. Each of the competing countries -Ireland, England, Scotland andWales- sent out a five-member team to compete in the Senior eventwith a similar procedure for U-21 and U-16 competitions, whichran simultaneously. The championships rotate annually amongst the countries andwhile Ireland hosted it four years ago it was 16 years sinceMunster had done so. "The east Cork area is considered particular-ly good as it provides high catches and exceptionally good back-up locations in case of poor weather or other possible problems",says Kieran, who along with Tommy Collins, ensured CRY did notlet this prestigious occasion escape the net. Under the auspices of the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers (IFSE),the Irish Senior team comprises four provincial champions plusthe winner of a national Jimmy Smith competition, who is alsoteam leader. This year’s team was: Cliff Gallogley (Youghal) JPMolloy (Dungarvan), Eamon Birmingham (Dublin), Sean Fleming(Giants Causeway) and Siert Schuls (Dundalk). The teams used lug and rag worm, the preferred peeler crabs beingdismissed on the basis there might not be adequate supply."Nobody blanked on the first day and very few on the second",says Kieran. Catches are returned to the water after points are awarded accord-ing to species and length. The species caught were conger, dogfish, wrasse, ling, and blenny, with the largest being the event’s solitaryconger (congers aren’t measured) caught by Cliff Gallogley. In the angling equivalent of a last minute goal, England snatchedthe championship from Ireland in the dying stages. "It was basical-ly down to a fish or two caught in the last half hour after 10 hours
