CONGRATULATIONS!to John Foley & Carolyn Young, who were married on Saturday, July 4. We wish them a lifetime of grace and happiness!

BAA/OLA KICK-OFFDear Our Lady of Perpetual Help family,

As we all know, 2020 has been quite the unexpected year. Although we have been physically separated for much of the spring, our church is still alive and still on mission. Because we are Catholic we still realize the Joy that is present in the world brought through Living the Gospel.

One of the ways we participate in that mission is through the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The impact and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has created extraordinary circumstances for our parish and our regional church, the Diocese of Columbus. Your participation is critical!

The overall goal for the Diocese this year is $6.85 million and our parish share of the Appeal is $148,468. If we exceed this goal, all excess payments received will come back tax free to us and go towards the Our Lady Appeal. This year’s Our Lady Appeal will focus on replacing one of our HVAC units for the church building, which costs about $82,000. Any additional funds are planned to go toward audio-visual equipment, which will help us adapt to some of the more permanent effects of the Coronavirus outbreak and reach our parishioners in new, exciting ways.

Due to the COVID-19 and recent suspension of public Masses, the Appeal was moved from May and will begin the weekend of July 11-12. I know there are many obligations and concerns facing each of you and your families, but please consider supporting the ministries and programs made possible through the generosity of the people of faith. Be assured of my gratitude for your gift – whatever the amount - and of my continuing prayers for you and your loved ones! We have two simple ways for you to donate:

• Go online to columbuscatholicgiving.org to make a secure pledge and/or gift.

• Extra pledge envelopes will be available to pick up at OLPH.

Let us pray for the success of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. I am confident that together, with everyone’s participation, our parish will exceed our goal. I thank you for the generosity that you have shown in the past as I pray for our parish family.

MASS INTENTIONSDuring the outdoor Mass in the Grass, Father Dan shared that God has interrupted our lives in unexpected ways. For most of us, the canceling of public Mass was an unwelcome jolt. We attend Mass to pray for one another as well as for loved ones that have gone before us. One way to pray for a loved one is to have a Mass offered in memory of them.

Due to the pandemic shutdown earlier this year, dozens of Mass intentions were put on hold. Like you, the church office anxiously waited for Mass to resume. When the time came to open up, the diocese advised us to resume Masses but with a new, reduced Mass schedule. Our new schedule requires a longer break between Masses to allow for sanitizing the church. The new schedule also removes a Mass each weekend.

This created two challenges for the church office. We had to reschedule each Mass intention that was canceled during the shutdown. We also needed to reschedule upcoming Mass intentions impacted by the postponement of the 9:30 Mass. We were able to reschedule each preexisting intention to a remaining, available Mass during 2020.

Numerous weekend Mass intentions could not be rescheduled on an upcoming weekend. Canon Law mandates that we provide a Mass intention within one year of the request. Our Lady of Perpetual Help is an active parish with Mass intentions typically booked out several months in advance. This makes rescheduling dozens of Masses a complicated task. We have done our best to reschedule each Mass intention while honoring Canon Law that guides us. We know that some of you will not be able to attend a Mass offered for a loved one because of a new date and time. We sympathize with you and we apologize for the inconvenience.

There are many uncertainties as we move forward. Will there be another shutdown in the fall as the next flu season commences? When will a new pastor be assigned to our parish? Will a new pastor change our Mass schedule? If so, how many Masses will be offered at Our Lady and what will those Mass times be?

Because of so many uncertainties regarding our Mass schedule, the church office is not accepting new requests for Mass intentions at this time. Our parish already has a Mass intention associated with each of the remaining Masses during 2020. Thank you for your dedication and support of our parish. Please continue to keep our parish in your prayers. The church office appreciates your patience as we navigate this ongoing interruption together.

HELP OUR SCHOOL!If you have not done so already, please take a moment to download the Box Tops For Education App. It allows you to scan your grocery receipt in a matter of seconds and automatically identifies any qualifying items you’ve purchased and then earns money for Our Lady of Perpetual Help! Couldn’t be easier! You’re buying groceries anyway —this does not require you to spend any additional money but makes a huge impact for the school if everyone participates. THANK YOU!

MINISTRY TO THE POORThis month we are collecting hand or face towels, hair conditioner, and women’s deodorant for Holy Family and the Open Shelter. Please place all items in the compartment located near the Scrip desk in the Gathering Space.

ATTENTION ALL CATHOLIC YOUNG MEN ENTERING 9TH – 12TH GRADE. Do you know where your life is going? The Lord Jesus has a great plan for you! You are invited to attend the Quo Vadis Retreat, spending time with other young men discerning God’s call. Quo Vadis is led by priests and seminarians of the Diocese of Columbus and is supported by the Diocesan Office of Vocations. Quo Vadis will be held July 26 – July 29. The cost of the retreat is $40. For more information or to register go to faceforwardcolumbus.com/quo-vadis/ or contact Michael Haemmerle at [email protected].

GRANT RECEIVEDWe received a grant from the Catholic Foundation in the amount of $8,200 to help purchase and install equipment to broadcast the Mass here at Our Lady. This grant will pay for additional cameras and equipment that will help in efficiently broadcasting the Mass, especially as the Bishop’s dispensation continues due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

We have used our live streaming capabilities for two funerals to accommodate family members who could not travel because of the pandemic. The families have been extremely grateful. We are excited to expand our production capabilities to serve our parish and community!

Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it.

the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies.

GOSPELMatthew 13:1-23

On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.”

The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted, and I heal them.

“But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.

“Hear then the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of

Let’s be blunt. Most fellow pew-sitters will downright question your sense of decency if you pull out your smart phone during Mass and gaze at the screen. Etiquette is clear: use of a mobile device in a house of worship is not acceptable–taboo in most circles. That being said, my husband and I (along with legions of others) read from a missal app on our phones as part of our participation at Mass. These Catholic apps are designed for use in worship and are here to stay. So shouldn’t we all agree on certain ground rules?

ETIQUETTE FOR USING A MOBILE DEVICE IN A HOUSE OF WORSHIPCheck device settings BEFORE entering your house of worship (I usually do this on the way to church with my husband driving):

• Silence your mobile device.

• Dim the light on your screen to lessen the distraction to others around you. If the app offers an option to choose a background that is not bright white, go for it. Bright objects distract others around you, and this is particularly so if you use a device with a large screen like an iPad or tablet.

• Disable those pesky notification center banners, popups, badges, and sounds by switching to airplane mode. As a double precaution, turn vibration off for all events that you normally select to vibrate when on silent mode (incoming calls, emails etc.).

• Open the app you plan to use at Mass and set it to the first text you will read. Then put it in sleep mode.

Don’t even think of entering the church building until you have covered that list in preparation. Now, once you are in the sacred space,

• Keep your device out of sight until needed. Put your device away the moment you are finished using the app. For the love of God, unless you really need to read the text of the Consecration, make sure your device is put away by then.

• Hold your device in such a manner that it is not distracting to others–down low and cupped in your hands.

• Bump up text size if you cannot read when your device is held at waist level. If your app does not offer text re-size option, choose another app that does (or get glasses). That light on your phone really is distracting to others. Keep it low.

• As an optional courtesy before Mass begins, you may wish to inform those around you that you will be using your mobile device to read the missal texts.

• You may wish to select a pew off to the side and against a wall to lessen the number of people who will see your screen. But that is just an optional idea.

As you can see, using your cell phone in church requires preparation on your part. Do not walk in expecting to whip out your phone, switch to silent mode and start fiddling with the touch screen. Still not convinced all those elements on the list are important? Keep reading.

YOUR DISCRETION IS CALLED UPON IN SACRED PLACESWhile the Emily Post Institute’s book, Manners in a Digital World, (2013) does not offer advice on using mobile devices in houses of worship, it does offer important ground rules for their use in social settings. The most important concept underlying digital etiquette? “Treat others with respect. Think about how your actions will affect the people around you.” Then “use common sense.”

Hence, distractions of any kind should be kept to a bare minimum if not eliminated all together. For that reason, it is common sense to silence one’s phone, lower the intensity of the backlight and keep any fiddling with the device to an absolute minimum. Your neighbor in the pew is attempting to communicate with God. That sentence was written with all sincerity. This is serious business which we are about in that house of worship. God wishes us to have a transformative experience. Let us keep that foremost in our deliberations about any little thing we may do (digitally or not) that would distract us or our neighbor from this lofty mystical endeavor.
