Who is Julia Child? The following is an excerpt from Charlie Gibson in Julia Child’s Kitchen Wisdom: “One of my college roommates moved to Cambridge after we graduated from

Princeton; he was a teaching assistant getting his PHD. He was living with his wife in a fourth floor walkup in cambridge, in a tiny little apartment. With great trepidation, they decided to have their first dinner party ever.

And she worked; she had to work long hours and wasn’t going to get home until about forty minutes before the guests arrived. She wanted to make a bearnaise sauce with some sort of meat and didn’t know if she should make the bearnaise sauce the

night before, or would it separate in the refrigerator. “How am i going to figure it out? No cookbooks will have that,” she stated, and my college roommate said, “call Julia Child.” “You can’t do that,” she said, “I bet you can,” he said. They looked her up in the phonebook, and there she was. They called her up. “Well darling what are you having for dinner? Tell me about your menu,” and my friend’s wife spent 25 minutes on the phone, going through the entire menu. Julia changed this, went all through this, and “you have to make this now, but make that tomorrow night,” and she said “i hope you have a wonderful time.” They hung up after 25 minutes on the phone; Julia Child planned the whole dinner party and never talked to her again” I think this quote shows that you should look deeply to find opportunities and grab onto them. As a result of Julia Child’s great success, she got to have great opportunities other people only dreamed of doing, like having her own TV show and a collection of ten books published. Julia Child is a famous american known for her french cooking and her show “The French Chef” that swept

the nation. Julia Carolyn Child was born on August 15, 1912 in Pasadena, California. Julia’s

birth name was Julia Carolyn McWilliams. Julia changed many Americans’ lifestyles

with her cooking. Sadly, Julia died on August 13, 2004, two days before her ninetysecond birthday

Many people know Julia by

her television show sensation The French Chef, an older TV show hosted by julia that showed Americans how to cook french food.

Schools Throughout Julia’s

childhood, she mostly went to private schools. Like her mom, she went to Smith college, near where Julia was born.

Jobs One of many jobs Julia had was working for the O.S.S. (Office of Strategic

Services). an intelligence agency set up during World War Two. Some of Julia’s other jobs included writing advertisements for a furniture store and she also worked for a fashion magazine.

Who is Paul Child? Paul Child was Julia Child’s husband. Paul and Julia met while they were both working for the O.S.S. They got married on September 1, 1946 in Lumberville, Pennsylvania. Paul was born on January 15, 1902 in Montclair, New Jersey. Paul’s birth name is Paul Cushing Child. Paul wrote a biography of Julia also being married to a famous French chef, Paul sadly died on May 12, 1994 in Cambridge Massachusetts, at age ninetytwo.

Paul and Julia go to Paris Paul got a job offer to work in the American Embassy in Paris. Paul and Julia decided that Paul should take the job and they would move to Paris. Paul loved Paris; it was his favorite city he had been to. Julia had not been to Paris or Europe. Paul and Julia got a one way ticket on a boat from Washington, DC, to La Harbor, France. They brought their car and their valuables. Once the car

was removed from the boat they gathered their

valuables and drove to paris. Their first stop before Paris was a restaurant named La Couronne. Paul told Julia

to get the oysters. When they came out, the waiters looked like their life was the food, and Julia had to have her first bite. When she dived in, the flavors started blooming inside her mouth. She needed to know how to make this dish and she wanted to learn it all.

Le Cordon Bleu

Afterward, Paul and Julia decided she should take cooking lessons at Le Cordon Bleu (a famous cooking school in Paris). When julia signed up, the owner, Madame Elizabeth Brassart, put her in the basic

cooking class withinexperiencedcooks (like her). Julia confronted Elizabeth, saying she deserved to be in the professional class. In two days, Julia was happily in the professional class. Julia was taught by professor, Chef Bungard. Julia was in a class of boys. Julia felt like she needed to show herself off. After every lesson Julia would go home, trying to improve her cooking techniques to show that she cared. This quote is about Elizabeth telling us who Julia child is: “a woman who knew what she wanted and stood up to her rights” (Dearie: The Remarkable Life of Julia Child, by Bob Spitz). think this quote shows that in Elizabeth’s opinion, Julia was persuasive in her thoughts and actions about what she wanted and deserved.

Julia’s Life on TV Julia changed American cooking with her TV sensation “The French Chef.” She changed how people felt about food and told viewers what food really is. Julia once said “Cooking is not a chore, it is a joy. Dining is not a fuel stop, it is a recreation.” (Julia Child’s Kitchen Wisdom) Julia auditioned at NBC studios, New York. When Julia got the letter to audition, they promised her an oven, but when she got there it was a hot plate. She was also told she would have an hour to prepare, but only five minutes to perform. During this time Julia really had to look for opportunities, so Julia got an idea. She would

premake the omelet and then, when the audition started, she would make an omelet the normal way, but while the omelet was cooking she would take out the premade omelet.

How Julia Child Affected Cooking

Julia affected cooking in many ways: a TV show, ten cookbooks, and seeing how she could “untie the knot.” She didn’t improve anybody; she improved herself to get people to think differently about her. You can see Julia Child if you search “the French

chef” or “Julia child, PBS.” You too can see how she made a difference.

Julia’s Kitchen is located in Washington, DC, at the Smithsonian Museum of American History. Below is an image of Julia Child's kitchen. It is her actual kitchen; she let the museum take out everything except the floor tiles and put it in on exhibit.
