Welcome! Welcome to the first edition of Mira Mesa Living. If you’re reading this, then congratulations on getting your hands on the newest (and best, in our humble opinion) way to learn about all things Mira Mesa.

We have several goals to meet with each edition. Overall, thispublication is geared toward bringing the community together. We will highlight the positive aspects of our community, including Mira Mesa, MCAS Miramar and Sorrento Valley.By presenting positive messages, we hope to unite our diverseneighborhood and allow more good things to happen.

Cultural diversity can be a dividing factor in a community, butat Mira Mesa Living, we believe it is our strongest asset. Wewill strive to promote, educate and embrace our differences to seethat we really are more similar than we might think.

Our plan is to get back to basics. Inside the pages of each issue youwill find information on our schools, community and neighbors.Ideally, our articles will inspire readers to grow with the community.

It is exciting to give birth to this publication at the same time wecelebrate the birth of this great nation. And with so many men andwomen serving our military and living in our neighborhood, wecannot think of a better time to launch this publication.

Putting together a publication of the quality and depth that we strive to reach isnot easy. It could not be done without the support of our local communityleaders, schools and businesses. Several people and groups put their faith and, inmany cases, their dollars into this project and we cannot thank them enough. The next time you are on a campus or see one of Mira Mesa’s leaders pleasethank them for their hard work. And please, consider the businesses you see inthis issue the next time you are looking for goods and services.

Ultimately, Mira Mesa Living is about you. To ensure we have you covered, weneed your help. Please let us know of anything going on in your world. We willdo our best to put it in these pages. Initially, it might be difficult to fit everythingin, but believe we will do our best. And anything that does not find its way intothe pages of Mira Mesa Living will likely be available atwww.miramesaliving.com.

While a handful of people have put in countless hours to launch Mira MesaLiving, it is up to every member of the community to see it grow to its fullpotential. There are several ways to reach us:

Retirement can be a wonderful time in a person’s life. Finally, afterall those years of diligent toil, finally, finally a life of leisure. Kickback—relax. Watch all those wonderful exciting daytime televisionshows (argh). Cruise down to the park and watch the excitementthere (zzzz). Then there’s golf, bowling and other leisure activities(yawn). What a life!

Trust me on this—it ain’t what it’s cracked up to be--it can get old, real old. After a short time many retirees get bored out of theirskulls. If you are one of these (and even if you aren’t) then youshould seriously consider serving in the Retired Senior VolunteerPatrol or RSVP. This is one fantastic way to enrich your life and atthe same time serve your community. The requirements are thatyou must be at least 50 years of age, a U.S. citizen or have legalresident status, possess a valid California Driver’s License, havemedical and automobile insurance, you must be of good moralcharacter with no felony convictions, pass a police backgroundcheck, and attend a weekly police academy training class.

Okay, so you fill out the form, pass the background check, and getthrough the academy, now what? Once you have done all of thatyou become a member of one of the most elite groups in the land, the RSVP. You are required to go on patrol at least three times permonth in uniform, radio in hand. Patrols are typically four hoursin length. Duties may include assisting with Community Policing

and Training with public presentations, vacation home securitychecks, visiting home-bound people as part of the Y.A.N.A. (YouAre Not Alone) Program, providing citizen assistance (i.e. informa-tion, directions, etc.), directing traffic at vehicle accidents or serv-ing in the city-wide RSVP Color Guard. The RSVP officers assistSan Diego Police Officers in a number of ways.

So who are these people? What makes them special? Why do theydonate their precious time? Well, that is hard to say; certainly eachhas his or her own reasons. If you spot one and strike up a con-versation you will find a very friendly and sincere person but theydon’t stand out. They seem just like the rest of us. There is one andonly one thing that separates the women and men of RSVP fromothers who are retired. They have a strong desire to be a part ofsomething larger than themselves and in so doing to contribute ina meaningful way to the wellbeing of their communities. And onceyou join the RSVP you will quickly learn the camaraderie sharedamong the members is very special—an intangible benefit that inand of itself is truly worth all the effort.

For the rest of us too young to retire, the RSVP is there to serve.People in Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch can request vacationhouse checks by simply filling out a form at the Police Storefront(8450 Mira Mesa Boulevard). Invalids can register with the store-front by simply making a telephone call. Suspicious activity can bereported at the storefront to direct those watchful eyes in thedirection of the problem. In short, we can rely on RSVP to bethere when we are in need. And by the way, lest anyone forget, our RSVP was a major factor in sheltering those displaced by thefires of a few years ago. So, in times of trouble you can expect tosee the RSVP come to the aid of those in need. Retired SeniorVolunteer Patrol—always vigilant.

Thank you so much for invitingme to celebrate America’sIndependence with you today. We are so blessed to live in theUnited States, to raise our fami-lies here and pursue our dreams.

This opportunity is ours because 234 years ago, the Declarationof Independence was signed by fifty-six men in Philadelphia anddefended fearlessly by thousands more. These patriots changedthe landscape of history and made possible the birth of a free andIndependent United States.

Brave men and women still stand ready to give their last fullmeasure of devotion to the cause of freedom. As we enjoy today, let us also remember to give thanks for them.

America is the shining city on a hill, the last best hope of earth. And America is entirely worth fighting for. May we be willing, like those great heroes before us, to pledge our lives, fortunes andsacred honor to continue this legacy.

Happy Birthday America. Here’s to hundreds more.

Message from San Diego CityCouncil MemberCarl DeMaio

I would like to offer my sincerecongratulations to Mira MesaLiving on its first publication.

The community of Mira Mesa is aneighborhood that has a diverse range of opinion andinterests. It is important to have a publication such as MiraMesa Living that serves as an outlet to express those differ-ences and allows citizens to let their voices be heard.

The first publication also takes place on the 4th of July. Thefree fireworks show in Mira Mesa is a Jewel to all SanDiegans and I am proud to have it in my district. It is fit-ting then to release the first issue on this very special dayfor our country and our community of Mira Mesa.

I look forward to working with Mira Mesa Living in thefuture to help better inform the community and keep it asa neighborhood we can be proud of.

By Ted Brengel

Let me begin by congratulating Michelle Tsai for her stellar effort to getthis fine publication off the ground. Starting anything in these troubledtimes is a supreme challenge, but Michelle’s boundless energy andindomitable spirit have triumphed.

Now let me introduce the Mira Mesa Town Council. We are a focalpoint for all things Mira Mesa. We celebrate every positive aspect of ourdiverse community with vigor and we work diligently to cover signs ofblight, decay, and deterioration. Our political leaders or their represen-tatives usually attend our meeting both to feel the pulse of the commu-nity and to provide us with information on significant legislative issues. Our meetings are public and everyone and every business in Mira Mesais encouraged to attend.

We are often asked if MMTC is a political organization. I think that theanswer is “no”. By that I mean we do not endorse or oppose any can-didates or issues, but we will provide a forum where all candidates canstate their positions and all sides of each issue can be discussed. So Iguess one could say that as an organization, MMTC is politically awareand concerned, but we are not political in that we do not participate incampaigns.

So what do we do? Each year there are three major MMTC-sponsoredevents: The Volunteer of the Year Dinner, the Fourth of July celebration, and finally the Mira Mesa Street Fair. Except for the Fourth of July cel-ebration these events are all organized and sponsored by MMTC. Inpast years (including this year’s celebration) the Fourth of July festivitieshave been organized by an independent committee, but starting thisyear the Fourth of July Committee will become part of the Mira Mesa

Town Council. We are one of the few communities who still have theirown fireworks display as part of Independence Day festivities. This isthanks to donations by generous sponsors and the hard work of manyvolunteers both in Mira and Scripps Ranch both to organize the eventsof the day and to solicit those very necessary donations.

We also work to improve our community. To date, in concert with MiraMesa HEROES, we have painted over 15,000 linear feet of walls andfences in Mira Mesa.

MMTC has seven standing committees: Fourth of July Committee,Landscape Maintenance Assessment District Committee, CommunityPride Committee, Stakeholders Committee, Mira Mesa Street FairCommittee, Scholarship Committee and the Volunteer RecognitionCommittee. We are aligned and cooperate with about two dozen groups. The members of each of these committees works diligently to make day-to-day life in our fair community a better experience for everyone.

Please join us! The Mira Mesa Town Council meets on the first Mondayof each month (except for July) at the Senior Center (8460 Mira MesaBoulevard). Meetings begin at 7:00 PM and last two hours. Attendanceat meetings is encouraged but not required. We also have a fantasticmonthly newsletter that is distributed only to members. The newsletteris the only way to keep track of all of the ongoing efforts to improveMira Mesa.

Please visit our website at www.MiraMesaTownCouncil.org where youwill discover a wealth of additional information including links to thewebsites of all of our business members. You can even join the TownCouncil right from the website—no need to mail any forms. Everythingrequired can be completed online. Join today. It will be the best twentybucks you ever spent!

Inside Hangar 3 (the same hangar used in scenes of the 1986movie “Top Gun”) at MCAS Miramar two best friends worktogether to make sure F-18 fighter jets are safe to fly. If eitherChris Gray or Fletcher Pak makes a mistake, a pilot dies. That, inpart, is why they take their jobs so seriously. Pak said, “It’s a wayfor me, as a civilian, to contribute to the United States and bepatriotic.”

Pak served in the Marine Corps. Having worked around theglobe, Pak now continues his work in San Diego as a civilianworking at MCAS. The avionics technician calls himself an elec-trician. Instead of wiring homes for low-energy lights, he isplugged into multi-million dollar weapons. Pak repairs the radar,GPS and communication systems of F-18 fighter jets. The samejets used in military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The pilotsin those missions learn how to fly on the jets Pak fixes. It isimportant work, and a job Pak cherishes. He said, “You get to bepart of something that will help the US.”

As a Marine, Pak’s passion for his country moved him up theranks in his field. He made it all the way to number two. Theman consistently in front of Pak was Chris Gray. Pak and Grayworked in Kuwait in 2003. A piece of paper pinned to a wallranked 100 marines by ability in their field. Gray and Pak, oneand two, knew each other by name and reputation. Gray said thetwo marines sometimes worked within a dozen feet of oneanother without knowing each other.

As often is the case in the military, Gray and Pak went on sepa-rate paths after their time in Kuwait. Pak continued his desire tobe the best avionics technician. Gray eventually took on more ofa managerial role. Today he is the final say on whether a jet canleave Hangar 3. Gray said, “Every time I sign that piece of paperI’m basically signing a check for $42 million and life insurance.”

In 2006, at MCAS, Pak and Gray first worked together. Afteryears of battling for promotions, the two men met face to face for

the first time, not as competitors, but as colleagues. Their nameshad been inked and linked for years. When they first met, how-ever, a mutual respect buried any potential animosity. Gray said,“At that point we both knew we were working with the best.”

Pak said the new working relationship took off immediately. Hesaid, “There was a different bond. Like a fraternity. It’s differentbecause you do things together in war time, a crucial time.”

Pak and Gray have a shared military background, a commonwork ethic and a shared roof. Their work relationship turned intoa friendship. Six months after working together, they becameroommates. Now the two men are best friends. It is a friendshipfounded on military discipline and patriotism, started in Kuwaitand strengthened in Mira Mesa.

From coaches to mentors, from intramural sports to school activ-ities, your Marines and Sailors are honored to be a part of thedevoted, patriotic, and vibrant community of Mira Mesa.

This Independence Day let us remember all those who havemade our freedom possible. As Americans, this is truly our holi-day to celebrate. I wish you and your families a safe and memo-rable Fourth of July.

Getting to Know Your Neighbor – Ted BrengelBy Steve Nicoles

An erroneous street sign at the corner of Thomas Hayes Lane andCalle Cristobal vaulted Ted Brengel into the forefront of Mira MesaLiving. A simple sign reading “No Right Turn” when only a right turnwas possible sparked interest in Mira Mesa politics. The mistakensign was the catalyst for Brengel’s current journey with Mira Mesa’sTown Council and the Mira Mesa Planning Group. Twenty years agohe started attending meetings. Two decades later and Brengel is inhis fourth term as Planning Group Chair and second as vice presi-dent of the Town Council.

To anyone who knows Brengel, and many Mira Mesans do, it comesas no surprise he is consistently serving our community, although itis actually a step backward from serving the entire country. He is aretired Navy Lieutenant Commander. Brengel said one of his great-est memories is overcoming his fear of flying… upside down. Hesaid, “I was able to overcome my fear and then after that I just want-ed to fly the plane upside down all day long.”

His flying days may be behind him, but Brengel’s positive attitudecontinues to soar over Mira Mesa. In 2008 the Mira Mesa TownCouncil, or MMTC, named Brengel Volunteer of the Year. Therecognition came in part because he is known for always being avail-able to lend a hand, whether it is providing photography for thestreet fair (This year it is September 25th. MML will have all the cov-erage you need.) or representing the Town Council and Planning

Group at an event.Brengel’s personal mottohas also won over MiraMesans since his arrival inthe early 1990’s: Be hon-est with yourself, friendsand other people. Brengelsaid, “Lies are way toocomplicated to sort out.”

Brengel’s military background and lineage is the basis for his patriot-ism, but he says he continues to believe in the American Way, andfor him, voting is the key. He said, “Our liberty is only servedthrough elections.” He hopes every Mira Mesan takes the time tomake informed decisions at the polls.

Next time you see Brengel, possibly at the July 4th parade, note hissmile. It will certainly be there. It is easy for him to smile. He livesin paradise. Most of us agree few places are better than San Diego. And few neighborhoods have the cultural diversity and businessprospects of Mira Mesa. Brengel takes advantage of both as a pro-fessional photographer. His services include restoring old photos. He offers discounts to Mira Mesa residents. Brengel says he couldnot be happier. He said, “I do what I love. I have a happy family. Iam healthy and satisfied. Mira Mesa is a fabulous community.”

A normal day in the life of Sandy Smith’s is simple, she loves help-ing people. This east coast transplant moved to Mira Mesa in 1971and five years later started her career as a real-estate agent. It tookSmith no time to begin making an influence on the community andrecognizing everything that Mira Mesa has to offer.

Smith is interested in the community because as a realtor she wantsto be involved in the place that she lives, works and plays. Nowafter all her time spent learning about the community and all thatit has to offer, Smith says that her most memorable moment in lifehappened recently when she was awarded the 2009 Mira MesaVolunteer of the Year. Smith is a huge asset to the community ofMira Mesa, but what defines her success? Happiness. She believesif you are happy with your self then you are successful.

Smith wantsthe Mira Mesa borders to be known sothat every member in the community can begin to identify with theplace that she calls home. Getting to Know Your Neighbor – David Baqi By Steve Nicoles

David Baqi did not know the path to achieving his dream would placehim in the middle of Mira Mesa. The 19-year-old guitarist and songwriter wants to share his music with the world. He left his suburbanneighborhood just outside Mission Viejo in Orange County for achance to explore and relish in Mira Mesa’s diversity. David said,“Every time I come here it’s been the most positive experience ever.I want to comeback all the time.”

David came back to Mira Mesa for good in April. The decision was notthe easiest for the young man who had never lived away from home.He had a comfortable life in a comfortable community. He knewalmost everyone he saw on the street. But the economic crisis hitDavid’s family hard. Just like it had for so many others across the coun-try, his family’s economic bubble burst. His parents filed for bankrupt-cy. He had to decide between living with his mom in Los Angeles andmoving south to San Diego. In Mira Mesa he lives with his brother, abanker with USE Credit Union. David does not regret his decision. Heonly looks back when he wants to see his girlfriend, Bre, who is finish-ing high school and plans to follow David to Mira Mesa.

The couple met at a coffee shop in their home town. An affinity forcaffeine brought them together. A passion for music keeps their rela-tionship strong. They spend hours talking about music, writing music, playing music. They hope to get some of those songs onto CD, andthey want to perform at the Epicentre. David said the venue has thepotential to draw major artists as well as lesser-known acts. He sees

the opportunity forvariety because hesees the diversityeveryday in MiraMesa. He said, “Itdoesn’t matter whatyou look like or howyou sound or whatmusic you listen to orTV shows you enjoy.Everybody is veryopen and willing tohear your side of things.”

David hopes people will be open to hearing his side of music. To check itout, visit either of David’s MySpace pages: www.myspace.com/timidlittle-souls and www.myspace.com/takersleavers.

David said in Mira Mesa he sees groups of people together that hewould not see living in Orange County. Bre agreed. She said it stretch-es beyond the people and encompasses the infrastructure. She said, “Ithink there’s individuality to each family and home here.”

David is on a journey. His dream destination is wherever he can bestshowcase his music. He believes there are 1,000 ways to get frompoint A to point B. He said, “I prefer the path of Mira Mesa becauseit is gorgeous.”

Teens will serve on the Advisory Council to provide their voice, creativity, and leadership in planning the direction of the pro-grams at the Epicentre. This will be achieved through partnershipwith program staff and community leaders who will provide sup-port for professional development and entertainment of skillsneeded for their transition to adulthood.

“We want to learn leadership skills.”“We want to have fun and be creative.” “We want to tackle the issues of gang violence, substance abuse, and relationships.”

These are some of the goals that teens down at the Epicentrewant to accomplish through the Teen Advisory Council, but mostimportantly, they want their “VOICE” to be heard throughout thecommunity.

The Teen Advisory Council is a great way for teens to express theirideas and let their voices be heard. It develops their leadershipskills. Teens suggest ideas for future activities and events gearedtoward teenagers. It is also a chance to work as a team to enhanceEpicentre programs and fulfill community services and needs.

The vibe of the program is energetic, whimsical, and loving.Currently, there are thirteen members of the Teen AdvisoryCouncil. They are between the ages of 14 -19. There is greatdiversity within the group. It consists of students from differentschools, Mira Mesa, Scripps, Westview and Cathedral Catholichigh schools. They have varying backgrounds, interests and tal-ents. The group has athletes, singers, dancers and other artists.Together they have an eclectic playlist in their MP3s, everythingfrom Pop, Dance, Hip Hop, Rock, etc.

The differences are celebrated within the group. Every meetingincludes members sharing their experiences. Currently, we areplanning a dance to celebrate the start of summer, “School’s OutDance!” The theme of the dance is cliques. People dress up as acertain clique at school such as jocks, rocker, goths, or nerds. Thepurpose is to get rid of the stereotypes and for all to come togeth-er at a social function and become united as one group.

We are also planning other events. We hope to have bonfires, field-trips, contests, Hip Hop events, car washes, selling concessions atcommunity events, and open mic performances. These are someawesome ideas that the teens have developed at the Epicentre.

For more information or if you would like to join the TeenAdvisory Council please contact Sigrid Batara at (858) 271-4000,come by the Epicentre, 8450 Mira Mesa Blvd, 92126 or go to ourlink and download the application form http://www.harmoni-umsd.org/services/youth-epicentre.

Schools

On April 9, Mira Mesa High School senior TiffanyTran was told that she earned the spot as theschool’s class of 2010 valedictorian. The valedicto-rian said she was surprised. Tiffany said, “I felt likethe underdog.”

But really her accomplishments are astounding.Tiffany holds the same qualities that parallel thestandard valedictorian. She is a member of promi-nent clubs on campus, such as Class Council, KeyClub and National Honor Society. Her schedule isfilled with AP classes.

She confides that she tries extra hard, but she is quick to make a joke.Tiffany said, “I do get lost (at times). I am not afraid to admit I am wrong. That’s the problem with super smart people.”

Outside school Tiffany embodies a completely different persona than heracademic one. Friends describe her as silly and funny, and she has ran-dom outbursts of crazy dance sessions with her close friends TraceyNguyen and Elizabeth Maraan.

Tiffany thanks her father for his constant presence in her academic life. She said, “He was my coach. School was my sport and I was the MVP.”Tiffany plans on attending UCSD Muir and to pursue her goal of becom-ing a pharmacist.

Tiffany has advice to people who undergo stress in school. She said, “It’simportant to have a balance between having a free sprit and hard workbecause if you focus too much on competing with others, it is all down hill.”

A True Valedictorian By Cathy Dela Cruz (Marquee Newspaper)

Founded in 2004, and run completely by volunteers, the Mira MesaHigh School Foundation has been working hard to financially supportour community’s senior high school. Over the past six years, theFoundation has donated over $50,000 to classrooms, athletics, clubsand parent boosters.

Mira Mesa High has long been one of the lowest funded schools in theSan Diego Unified School District. With even more budget cuts loom-ing, we strive to offset the losses our school has to endure. People askme why our school gets so little, and the answer is really hard to under-stand. Our students are doing well overall, so the district believes theschool does not need as much help as some of the inner-city schoolswith more issues.

Founding President, Kathy Madsen had big goals for the foundationbefore passing on the baton. “I’d like to see us having the capacity to doso much more for our school and our community in the future,” shesaid. In order to move forward we need strong leaders and faithful part-ners to help out.

For now, the Foundation has three main venues for earning funds. Oneis from the Farmer’s Market which occurs in front of the high schoolevery Tuesday from 3pm until 7pm. This has become a great communi-ty gathering place as well as the hot-spot to pick up fresh, healthy ingre-dients for meals. Market Manager Ron La Chance said, “The Mira Mesa

Farmers Market has been more successful than we had dreamed of.”

The second main source of income for the Foundation comes from theTaste of Mira Mesa, an exciting event showcasing restaurants fromaround Mira Mesa, Miramar and Sorrento Valley. This year theFoundation opened the earnings from Taste of Mira Mesa to all the clus-ter schools in our area. As a result, we have more enthusiasm for theupcoming years. Most important is our Membership. Without the helpof other parents and community members, it would be impossible forus to grow.

If you’ve driven down Black Mountain Road recently, you may havenoticed massive construction upending the 120-acre Miramar Collegecampus and wondered, “What’s going on?”

Thanks to the successful passage in 2002 and 2006 of facilities-specificbond measures benefitting the San Diego Community College District, more than $350 million is being used to fund 24 projects at Miramar, transforming the 40 year-old campus into a college of the future withnew state-of-the-art classroom buildings, a massive library learningresource center, ample parking, and more.

According to college president Dr. Patricia Hsieh, “Miramar is in anexciting period of expansion, building new facilities to better preparestudents for transfer to four-year universities and for high demand, wellpaying careers.”

At completion of the facilities master plan, the college will be positionedto serve 25,000 students, almost double the current enrollment. Severalmajor projects have already been completed (science and technologybuilding, automotive technology center, Hourglass Park field house/fit-ness center), with the remainder to be constructed within five years.

All projects are designed to achieve Leadership in Energy andEnvironmental Design (LEED) certification by the United States GreenBuilding Council (USGBC), which promotes design and constructionpractices that reduce the negative environmental impacts of buildings, while improving occupant health and well being.

Current construction includes:
