Good readers are like detectives who are using clues to solve a mystery.

Good readers use what they already know.

Good readers put words in chunks.

Good readers are always asking themselves, “Does that word make sense?”

When you come to a word you don’t know, look for a small part of the word that you do know. This is

called putting the word in “chunks.”

As you are putting the words in chunks, think about the story, and ask yourself,

“Does this word make sense?”Since this story is about farmers, that’s what you should be thinking about as you are figuring out difficult words.

The farmer has a busy day. First, he has to feed thechickens and gather the eggs. The dairy cattle need to be fed and milked. Then the farmer goes out to work in his fields. He has to cultivate the soil to get it ready to plant soybeans. When he plants a new crop, he spreads fertilizer on the field.Sometimes he may need to work on his equipment. The farmer has a very busy day!
