In the Philippines, it is always advised to bring clothes for hot weather. Bring light clothes. It’s al-ways safe to have those handy white shirts around. Like in any foreign country, be careful of pickpock-ets. Always bring that handy insect-repellant. When shopping, always haggle. Mingle with the locals. They always give the best tips. Be adventurous!

Pack light. Bring only essentials like sunscreen, medicine, at least two swimsuits, extra plastic bags, a pair of slippers, one formal clothing (just in case), toiletries, camera and extra money. Plan your outfits

prior to leaving to avoid packing too much or too little. Write down all you intend to do to be more organized.

Keep your cash hidden in different places just in case you lose something. Make sure you leave some room in your luggage for souvenirs or other purchases.

Research about the place before traveling. It's best to be informed about weather conditions, local customs, hangouts, etc.

Teddy Cruz, IIIPUBLISHER

“I shall be telling this with a sigh. Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I...I took the one less traveled by. And that has made all the difference.” – an excerpt from Robert Frost’s The Road Less Travelled.

I remember trying to memorize this poem for an oral presentation back in highschool. Right after that, I fell in love with this poem. It talks about how life is an adventure. Well, that’s my take on it. With that in mind, we welcome you to our April-May Issue—our Summer Issue. We would like to thank all of you who answered the call to “Be JUAN of us”. We really appreciate your comments and emails of support. Trust that every issue we make, we have you all in mind. We’re excited as we put out another issue of JUAN Philippines Magazine. We have come upon our own “two roads diverged in a wood.” We will update you on our Facebook Fan page and on our website what those are.

Anyway, it’s Summer Time, it’s time to have fun in the sun!

In this issue, we head out on our first Road Trip Feature which hopefully will become a staple in every issue. Check out the Do’s and Dont’s for an enjoyable trip. We also let you experience Bugsy’s mouth-watering treats and allow you to explore the streets of Singapore in Manila through Makansutra.

Also in this issue, we give one of our readers a chance to be a writer. Check out the winning entry to our Best Beaches in the Philippines writing contest and also the winning entry of our “Get a Chance to have your Photo featured in our Parting Shot section.”

Join us at Two Seasons Boracay, as we enjoy their delicious food & extraordinary service. Believe us, they’re not just a beach resort in Boracay. The food is really, really superb too!

Also in this issue, we celebrate the Filipino’s entrepreneurial spirit as we highlight online sellers on Multiply in a special feature on their travel and local products. We will also have our first-ever party in time for the elections dubbed as “JUAN sa 2010!” on April 10 at TYA Bar and Resto. It’s going to be a thanksgiving party for our readers, advertisers and friends who have been loyal to JUAN and our endeavors.

We would like to thank Mr. John Penaloza for accommodating us at Two Seasons Boracay. Our special thanks goes to Ms. Tina Santos of Makansutra, Mr. Bug Warren and Perry Quimbo of Bugsy’s Bar and Bistro and Mr. Ramon Cabrera of The Manor Hotel at Camp John Hay for hosting our Road Trip Dream Team.

Our special thank you also go to Mr. A.L. Henson, as he officially joins us as part of the JUAN Road Trip Dream Team.

We travel far and wide to bring you the best of the Philippines. With more than 7,107 islands, imagine the possibilities.

JUAN Philippines Magazine is charting another adventure.

Page 15: JUAN is your Ultimate Travel Guide!

There are only two things that can make me wake up in the middle of the night—fire AND Bugsy’s Buffalo Tenders.

Ask my brother.

So when I found out that we were going to be doing a food review on Bugsy’s Makati, I couldn’t sleep! I was imagining chickens flying over and around me and with the dip chasing them! Man, that was a weird night. It only got me hungrier. Poor bed sheets.

Don’t worry, I won’t narrate how I brushed my teeth and washed my face before going to work that day because I actually don’t remember all that and just remember one thing from that day—the Bugsy’s Buffalo Tenders. Among other dishes.

That day was probably the fullest and most satisfied I was. I’m not ly-ing. I can still remember the smell of my burp. Excuse me.

Now in two locations (the first one in City Golf Plaza in Ortigas and now one along San Agustin St. in Salcedo Village, Makati), Bugsy’s Bar and Bistro is certainly gangster. And we mean this in the most positive of ways. It’s just gangster. From the name of the bar to the environment inside. It really is gangster.

The food is great and the people who are behind it are even better. Visit the place once or twice and the staff already know you by name. And that’s what the owners want the place to be known—a neighbor-hood bar. Where you can just come in shorts and sandals (c’mon, don’t come in a sando, you wise guy!) and relax with your friends and your officemates after work. Beer

is just P55 and the food choices are stomach-boggling (get it? Instead of mind-boggling, I used “stomach.” Get it now?).

Aside from the Buffalo Tenders (only P175!), Bugsy’s is also famous for its

Warren’s Dip and Chips (P185). The dip is an old family recipe of Miguel and Bug Warren, co-owners of the bar. Yes, a lot of customers (includ-ing us) have been trying to get the two drunk so as to spill the beans (no, beans are not part of it…or are they?) on the recipe of the dip but to no avail. Just another reason for you to drink at Bugsy’s. Other must-try’s are the Bugsy’s Famous Cured Beef Surprise (more popularly known as tapa), the Bugsy Siegel (steak that is truly mouth-watering)

Oh, sorry, about that, we had to wipe something off the magazine.

Anyway, other heavenly dishes are the Bugsy’s Ultimate Oven-Baked Burger (P305), the Lamb Chops (P395) and the Fish and Chips (P185).

More than the food, it is the feel of the place when you’re there. Everyone seems friendly. For us, it’s the perfect place to relax after a hard day at work. There’s also a smoking area. And it’s open from 11 a.m. (yes, they serve lunch too!) until 5 a.m. (breakfast?).

We must warn you though. You might not want to go back to the of-fice once you’ve settled in for lunch.

Bugsy Malone:Have you eaten? Blousey Brown:Ever since I was a kid. Bugsy Malone:Then how come you’re so skinny, wisey? Blousey Brown:Because I watch my weight. Bugsy Malone:Yeah, I do that when I’m broke too.

The Philippines, being an archipelago, is surrounded with crystal blue waters, pristine white beaches and colorful marine life. Every region boasts their famous beaches and it’s always a tough decision to make which one to choose because every island offers something different and exciting – from island hopping, water sports, scuba diving etc. The beaches in the Philip-pines are truly a perfect complement to the tropical weather we have and as they say it’s always fun to play under the sun, just make sure to apply enough sunblock.

So here’s my top three beach destinations in the Philippines, from its three major islands: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

Luzon: A different world in El Nido

Being in El Nido is like being in a scene from the movie Waterworld. Imagine yourself riding the banca and being transported into a different world - the soaring high cliffs are the majestic gates of the kingdom and as your vessel moves in, towering rock formations and crystal clear lagoons welcome you. And as you look into the water, a multitude of colorful fishes are swimming as if they are following you on your ride. El Nido is simply a paradise where one can truly savor fresh air and appreciate the beauty of nature. It’s no wonder why El Nido was hailed as UNESCO’s Protected Heritage Site. Everything is just perfect, it’s like everything has been properly placed – the clear blue waters amidst the towering rock formations – a perfect backdrop for a magical sunset.

Visayas: Island Adventures in Bantayan Island

Bantayan Island in Cebu is a new addition to the best beaches in the Philippines. Although, the island is flocked by both local and foreign tourists, the place is still less populated and commercialized compared to

other well-known beaches in the country. The island of Bantayan is approximately three hours away from Cebu City and from the ferry going there, you will notice a spread of white sand beach lined with tall green

coconut trees. One of the activities you can do in Bantayan is island hopping to the Virgin Island. Its clean shores and white sandy beach is a testament to why the island is called “virgin”. The island is free from estab-

lishments and usual crowd noise – just the sun, sand and the sea. The whole virgin island is yours to enjoy by listening to the crashing waves or simply enjoying an afternoon with family and friends.

Mindanao: Water Playground at the Malipano Beach (Davao)

Just across the Pearl Farm Beach Resort in Davao is the Malipano Beach. An island with towering coconut trees, a chapel and nipa huts. But aside from this, the island boasts of powder-like white sand – a perfect complement to its blue waters. One can truly enjoy the waters of Malipano with different water activities like kayaking, jet skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling. A jumping board is also situated in the middle of the ocean where one can enjoy unlimited splashing fun. But aside from this, the Pearl Farm Beach Resort also offers spa services to relax sore muscles from a whole day of water fun. But if you can’t get enough of water, then enjoy the resort’s infinity pool overlooking the Samal Sea – a perfect spot to enjoy Davao’s sunset.

There’s a beach front resort conve-niently located in Station 1, along the stunning 4 kilometer powdery white sand it’s called Two Seasons Boracay. It’s less than a minute walk to Bora-cay’s famous Willy’s Rock.

Upon your arrival in this beautiful resort the courteous staff will meet you with a warm smile and a cold welcome drink--definitely a sign of good things to come. Upon checking in, you’ll be greeted by an incredible view—a site to behold—Boracay’s beach front. It’s one of those things that dreams are made of. Take note, the experience is just the beginning.

Two Seasons Boracay offer a total of 34 rooms. All their rooms are minimal-

ist in design. Upon settling in, feel free to be acquainted with your room. It’s equipped with all the amenities you need—a private veranda (avail-able in some rooms), an iHome alarm clock with an iPod docking station. The resort also has a breath-taking swimming pool, a 20-meter Koi pond, a restaurant called BarLO Resto Lounge (Euro/Asian eclectic cuisine) and Sky Bar (located at the roof top). All of these plus two back up genera-tors for guaranteed uninterrupted power supply.

Now it’s time to enjoy and relax. Walk towards one of the beach front cabanas and order a Basil Mojito and another must try, the Barman Kiss Cocktail. Indulge yourself with

the view. Help yourself to their wide array of choices on their menu. We recommend you try their Pepperoni Pizza, Nachos, and Smoke Fish Roll to accompany that Mojito. Not to forget, you should also try their Jello shots. For sure this will add a bounce to your step. You’ll soon notice how they attend to you with utmost courtesy; you’ll soon fall into a spell that will make you feel like royalty. Their staff is so well-mannered, you’ll just love to stay and never leave the resort. That’s just the beginning. Just a footnote, their bar’s happy hour is from 4pm to 6pm.

After an afternoon of relaxation and fun, it’s time to fuel yourself for the night ahead. Check out BarLo’s

offerings. You’ll be astonished by the menu they offer not to mention the flavors they incorporate in all their dishes. It’s a mix of European slash Asian flare—Yum! We recommend the Chef‘s Angus Burger, Four Cheese Pizza, BBQ Crocs, Crocodile in Coconut Milk (my personal favorite), Prawns Maricudo and Lamb Ribs. Our compli-ments to the Chef.

After a hearty meal, walk it off on the beach and gaze upon the stars (don’t trip though). Revert to the bar and order more drinks—Cheers! We recommend you try their Frozen Margarita, Cilantro Mojito. Don’t worry about anything, you’re here to enjoy. Well, that’s not hard to do in Two Seasons Boracay.

After that long day, hie off to your room to rest and prepare for tomor-rows activities. Don’t be surprised to receive a call from the front desk ask-ing you if you would want to indulge in a massage before you go to sleep. That’s service for you.

After a night’s rest wake up to a scrumptious buffet breakfast and, of course, piping hot brewed coffee. But if you want to go ala carte, we sug-gest you try their Two Seasons Sunrise Special. What a good way to start a long and relaxing fun-filled day.

I have never been so delighted to be in one place especially here in Boracay which has so many things happening at the same time.

Definitely, Two Seasons Boracay is an experience in itself, not to mention their food and especially their service is extraordinary. I have to say its worth adding to your list of reasons to go to Boracay especially to those first timers who will definitely remember the experience.

JUAN FOR THE ROAD

26 Philippines · April-May 2010

Page 27: JUAN is your Ultimate Travel Guide!

This is the JUAN Road Trip Series.

First stop—the Summer Capital of the Philippines—Baguio.

Before we left, we made sure that we won’t be Flintsone-ing our way up the zigzag roads. Hence, the automatic car check up.

HeRe ARe SOMe CAR CARe TiPS BeFORe yOu START THAT enGine:

•  Check all the fluids. From the engine oil to the gas (duh!) to the brake fluid. Everything that can dry up (oh, you brought your grandma with you!), you check it.

It was whatever came our way for sure as JUAN embarked on its first road trip of the year. Manila to Baguio. 250 kilometers or so of traffic (along EDSA), habal habal’s, buses that get maneuvered like cars (damn you, bus driver!), wide open roads, the joy that is SCTEX and the beauty of the lush green spaces along the road as we zipped by.

•  Tires. Make sure that they’re thicker than your face and that the tire pres-sure is set to the one written on your manual. Check also if your shocks are still in place (if not, tell your overweight cousin that the trip got cancelled).

•  Security. Are your spare tires in place or were you a victim of another practi-cal joke? Go check now. Don’t forget to bring the jack and wheel wrench too.

•  Drive carefully. There’s no substitute to being alert on the wheel. Don’t be crazy. Wait for the next best pass and be patient. Overtaking one car is not worth your life and those with you in the vehicle.

•  Free Falling by Tom Petty. Then imagine yourself looking like Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire.

•  Overdrive by Eraserheads. Who does not know this song? And who does not want to sing along with it?

•  You Give Love A Bad Name. Yeah, this was a hit too in our trip. Release all your angst against your ex’s here.

•  Highway to Hell. At your own risk.

WHAT ARTiCLeS OF CLOTHinG SHOuLD One BRinG?

•  Sunglasses. To hide your sleepy eyes for pictures and also to protect the windows of your soul from the heat that is the center of the solar system. It makes some girls pretty too.

•  Sneak-ers. Either for walking or for your casual ware. You can’t beat having sneakers.

OKAy, nOW FOR THe GADGeTS yOu HAVe TO BRinG:

• MP3 Player. Yup, no endorsements here, hehe. Set up a Road Trip playlist too. Ours were full of 90s songs (Eraserheads, Stone Temple Pilots, Guns n’ Roses, Nirvana, Parokya ni Edgar and Boy George—kidding!). Oh, you need an FM transmitter too to be sure.

•  Digicam. To document all the places you visited and also to catch those embarrassing moments. Haha. There are so many beautiful sites in the Philippines. Capture them all.

•  Cellphone. So you can contact your loved ones when you get lost. Kid-ding. For emergency purposes. And also if your phone has a nice camera or video recorder.

•  Laptop. If you need to check your email or need to send some proposals or if you really love writing, then a laptop or a netbook would be a great companion too.

•  Board shorts. Just in case you pass by a lake, a beach resort or a swim-ming pool. Better safe than have wet underwear.

•  Jacket. Don’t forget. You’re going to Baguio.

Then, thank you to Manor Hotel ([email protected]/(632) 845-0892/ (6374) 424-0931 to 43) in Camp John Hay in Baguio, our stay was truly restful and full of adventure. Aside from being full in our itinerary, our stomachs were truly satisfied as well.

What a perfect road trip.

To pack light this summer season is a challenge, especially when the stuff you have to bring are quite bulky to get you fab as we say hello to the sweet, smiling sun. The au-thority in making travel accessories, United Kingdom’s Design Go recog-nizes the need to give one’s traveling experience a personal touch.

Boring gold and silver locks for your luggage? DesignGo has them in an array of colors – in pink, turquoise, green, red, and other vibrant colors. Even one’s essentials are made travel-friendly – foldable hair-dryers, anyone?

Whether by air, sea, or land, Design Go has an entire line-up of products built to protect the smallest, but most valuable and most expensive items. A wallet that can safeguard your cash, cards, and passports – you can have them cling on to you be-neath your clothes. There’s also the

Dry-Pod, an item that could seal your iPod, small digicam, and cellphone air and water-tight.

Travel-size kettle heaters are also avail-able – so you could turn your hotel/inn room into a more comfortable, homey place with all your needs good to travel around with. You can even do your laundry with a travel clothesline!

Design Go even has a SIM card saver that can back-up all your SIM contacts. In the event that (knock on wood!) your cellphone gets lost or phone memory gets full, this SIM card saver will ensure that you wouldn’t have to say “Who’s this?” for every unregistered number.

Summer is everything but colors – screaming, shocking colors, that would make our journey to that perfect, sun-kissed tan fun and col-orful with our lovely crews. Share

IT’S THE LITTLE, COLORFUL THINGS – DESIGN GO TRAVEL PRODUCTS

the little things and put it in mind to freely accessorize your summer with Design Go travel accessories.

Design Go travel accessories are available at The Travel Club, Brat-pack, R.O.X and leading department stores nationwide. Design Go is exclusively distributed by the Primer Group of Companies.
