The Ocean boys basketball team has a 14 win and 9 loss record this sea-son and have some impressive wins along the way, but in facing Toms River North, who has a 20 win and 2 loss record and are ranked number 5 in the Shore Conference, the task was just too much to overcome. Ocean fought hard all game and never gave up but came up just short losing to the Mustangs by the score of 47 to 36.

The Mariners have now won eleven games in a row and their last loss was over a month ago. Toms River North got off to a fast start and led 15 to 6 at the end of the first quarter playing great defense. Ocean got back in the game outscoring the Mariners in the second quarter and cutting the lead to 7 points. The game remained close

the rest of the way but the Spartans just could not overcome the Mariners.

Solly Stansbury had a fantastic game and led the mariners with 16 points, 20 rebounds, 13 blocks, and 4 steals. Damien Singleton added 14 points and also added 10 assists. Kyle Car-rington scored 7 points while Ron Marciano added six points and had six steals. For Ocean, Alex Cirlincione led the way in scoring for the Spartans with 14 points while Royal Moore add-ed 9 points. Harry Matrazzo and Eric Musto each added 6 points. Toms River North will now move on to face Colts Neck in the next round of the Shore Conference Tournament.

POINT PLEASANT - The duo of Kate-lyn Flaherty and Marina Maybrey have Point Pleasant Beach sitting at 20-1 and a number one seed head-ing into the Central Jersey Group I NJSIAA Tournament.

After capturing the NJSIAA Tour-nament of Champions last season with Manasquan both Flaherty and

Maybrey transferred to Point Pleas-ant Beach over the summer. After a back and forth battle over their eligibility, the pair were granted their playing time and since then the Gulls have not looked back.

After suffering their lone loss of the season this past weekend in the Quarterfinals against St. John Vi-anny, the Gulls still have plenty of success and pride left in the tank to build off of.

Both Katelyn and Marina rank in the top five in the state in scoring, Fla-herty with 30.7 point per game and Maybrey with 24.3 points per game. The duo along with a young sup-porting class should fair well in their NJSIAA run with an anticipated finals game against #2 ranked Meutchen.

Both Flaherty and Maybrey look to join their fellow teammate and sis-ter Michaela Maybrey in winning NJSIAA titles and Tournament of Champions titles with two different schools in four years. Last year the trio lead Manasquan to the schools first ever Tournament of Champions title.

BRICK TOWNSHIP— The goal was clear since the beginning of the season for the Brick Township wrestling team. With seven district medal winners returning from last season’s squad, the Green Drag-ons believed they could not only get back to the state sectional final, but win it. When the Central Jer-sey Group III tournament played out this past week, Brick realized they would face a familiar foe in the final in Ocean Township. The Spartans defeated them last year for the crown.

“We set a goal at the beginning of the year to win here at the end,” explains head coach Matt Opacity.

The Green Dragons took ad-vantage of the opportunity and avenged last season’s defeat at the hands of Ocean. Dan Wojtasek came up with a critical pin in the 170 lb. weight class as Brick came away with a 42-23 victory for the sectional championship. Wojtasek is 24-3 on the season and doing some of his best work down the stretch this year. The Spartans got out to a strong start, but Dan Rack-liffe and Conor Mulligan earned pins in the 106 lb. and 113 lb. weight class to get the Dragons on track.

Brick will move on in the Group III tournament where they could do some damage. The team has depth and talent and was hard-ened by the difficult schedule in the Shore Conference this season. The Green Dragons finished fourth in the Class A South Division, which gives an indication of how tough the competition was.

SCT Boys’ Semifinals are SetBy Ted Kaiser

LINCROFT— The Shore Conference Tourna-ment boys’ semifinals are set. Top seeded Lakewood will meet 5th seed Toms River North on Wednesday at 7:45pm and 2nd seed Point Beach will face 3rd seed Manasquan at 6:00pm. The SCT boys’ final will take place on Saturday, February 23rd at 3:00pm at Mon-mouth University.

In the quarterfinals last Saturday, Lakewood advanced with a solid win over Matawan 57-42. The Huskies, who stunned CBA in the Round of 16, ran out of magic. Guard Tyrice Beverette had 22 points and forward Ben Wat-son had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Toms River North and Colts Neck had a back and forth battle. The Mariners led at the half, then Colts Neck led by six points late in the game. Brandon Federici’s last second shot at-tempt was no good and TR North prevailed 58-57. Damian Singleton had 18 points for the Mariners.

Later on Satur-day afternoon, Manasquan got 13 points from Jimmy Walsh and 12 from J.R. Hobbie to hold off Jackson Memorial 45-41. Point Beach advanced with a 52-45 win over Manalapan thanks to three players in double figures including Matt Farrell with 16 points.

HOLMDEL – Saint John Vianney (SJV) knew that No.1 seed Rumson Fair Ha-ven Regional had been upset by No.8 seed Manalapan earlier in the day when they took to the ice Wednesday night. “We certainly didn’t want to be the second dragon slayed in the same day,” said fourth-year head coach Steve Scanapicco.

Fortunately for Scanapicco and his team, that didn’t happen, as the Lanc-ers (16-1-3) skated past No.7 seed Howell (11-13) 3-0 Wednesday night at the Jersey Shore Arena.

SJV, ranked No.9 in the state and No.2

in the Shore, had their work cut-out for them. Scanapicco noted, “Howell worked extraordinarily hard, right up to the very end. They didn’t give us a whole lot of space to play, so we were forced to take shots from the exterior. We really didn’t get a whole lot of slot activity, they did a great job keeping us on the outside preventing us from get-ting quality stu in the middle. Head coach, Billy Daley (Howell), had them charged up to play.”

After a scoreless first period, sopho-more center, Matt Kidney, scored on a power-play goal with 5:12 remaining in the second period to put the Lanc-ers on top 1-0. The goal was Kidney’s

18th of the year, placing him sec-ond on the team with 32 points.

Junior defensemen, Drew Fisher (2 goals, 16 assists, and 18pts.), and Tim Gelatt (5 goals, 16 as-sists, 21 pts.) assisted on the play.

With the score still 1-0 with 9:36 left in the game, sophomore new-comer, Sam Zietara, scored his first career varsity goal, to give SJV a game-changing two-goal lead. Zietara slammed the puck home on a feed from behind the net. He was sitting right in the slot waiting for it when senior, Michael Davie (14 goals, 16 assists, 30 pts.), found him all alone.

“It was one of the very few mis-takes Howell made in the defensive zone all night. They left Zietara un-touched in the slot for just a split second,” said Scanapicco. second,” said Scanapicco. second,”

“We normally have Kidney paired with his childhood friend, sopho-more forward, Mike Gelatt (16 goals, 18 assists, 34 pts.), and ju-nior forward, Drew Galante (10 goals, 12 assists, 22pts.). That’s our number-one line and top scor-our number-one line and top scor-our number-one line and top scoring line. Galante was out with the u, so we inserted Zietara, a trans-fer, playing only in his second var-fer, playing only in his second var-fer, playing only in his second varsity game into that line. All three goals were scored when that line was on the ice.”

Tim Gelatt put the game on ice, hitting the empty net with 1:55 remaining in this extremely hard fought battle.

Sophomore goalie, James El-lis, stopped 22 shots for his third shutout of the season. Ellis has 257 saves on the year, giving up only 18 goals. Splitting time in the net with Ellis this year is se-nior, John Bonino. Bonino has stopped 206 shots, surrendering only 22 goals. Scanapicco is pleased, “We’re very fortunate to have the goal-tending tan-dem that we have.”

“Our three captains, senior, David Delseni (14 goals, 10 assists, 24 pts.), senior, Michael Davie, and junior, Drew Fisher, provide incredible leadership on ice and in the locker room. They got the guys rolling over the summer and into the fall. When the season opened, the team was ready.”

Scanapicco feels good about his team moving forward, “I’m very lucky to have the nucleus of seniors and under-classmen, including junior center, Joe

Porretta (11 goals, 9 assists, 20pts.) on this team. They are all great kids and they’ve been battle tested.”

“I’ve been here four years now, so this senior class were freshman when I started. I’ve got a little bit of a special place for them; it would be nice to win the whole thing with them. We’re look-the whole thing with them. We’re look-the whole thing with them. We’re looking to bring Saint John Vianney hockey back into Shore Conference promi-nence for years to come.”

The Lancers will face the winner of the Middletown North – Red Bank Catho-lic game in the second round of the Handchen Cup, date and time TBD.

COLTS NECK – No.4 seed Colts Neck (18-3, 12-1) turned a close game into a rout Thursday night, with 64-45 sec-ond round SCT victory over No.13 seed Southern Regional (13-9, 9-5) at Colts Neck.

Senior, Brandon Federici, third in the Shore Conference in scoring with a 21.6 per game average, was the game’s leading scorer with 20 points. He also grabbed a team high eight re-bounds.

Federici was more impressed with his team’s defense. “Our momentum came from our defense today, we were able to adapt to what the game was giving us. Our full-court press created turn-overs and fast-break baskets, Sobieski (James) got the dunk.”

Colts Neck’s game plan was to apply man-to-man full-court pressure from the start, and eventually wear Southern down; it worked. Head coach, Lou Pic-cola, explained, “We decided to press them as soon as they got o the bus; our plan was to wear them down. We made it as dicult as possible for them to get the ball to Gesicki, and to contain penetration. By the end of the game, they were tired; we held them to ve points in the fourth quarter. Our full-court pressure turned the game around in the fourth.”

It was an eight -point game at the half, 30-22, with neither team being able to put the ball in the hoop with any consistency. Federici had nine first-half points, senior, Tim Vangelas, added six, while sophomore, Chris O’Reilly, had five.

Southern cut the lead to five points, 31-26 at the start of the second half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Vange-las and Federici put the Cougars back up by eleven.

At the end of three quarters, Southern again trimmed the deficit to eight, 30-22, but their fatigue was beginning to show.

Vangelas added eight third-quarter points, including two three-pointers. Vangelas added, “We had a couple days o, so we were ready to run. Our game plan was to press full court; we stuck to it and it worked.”

In the fourth quarter, Colts Neck was relentless with its press and Southern was finished. Southern had one basket in the first seven and a half minutes of the quarter, while the Cougars reeled off 14 points, for a 62-43 advantage. The two teams traded baskets in the fi-nal seconds for the 64-45 final.

Senior, Lucas Lulima, did all his scor-ing in the fourth quarter, putting up five points. Lulima had a fine all-around game, dishing out a game-high six assists, hauling in four rebounds and adding two steals.

Piccola was impressed, “Luke’s (Lali-ma) the one who does all the little things, you just appreciate everything he does, he’s relentless. Sobieski (sev-he does, he’s relentless. Sobieski (sev-he does, he’s relentless. Sobieski (seven points, four blocks, two rebounds) just continues to ght, get rebounds and block shots for us, and O’Reilly (11 points, three assists, two steals) made

some big shots for us, especially in the rst half. For a sophomore he’s very, very talented.”

Colts Neck has won six in a row and now appears in good shape for a post-season run. “Right now it’s one and survive, nothing means anything but getting to the next game,” Piccola but getting to the next game,” Piccola but getting to the next game,”lamented.

COLTS NECK ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALS IN SHORE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENTBy Mike Ready

CHICAGO - When it comes to food and nutrition, even the most knowl-edgeable parents can use help making sure their children are eating healthy meals. Each March, the American Di-etetic Association celebrates National Nutrition Month®, and this year's theme, "Eat Right with Color," encour-ages parents to take time to make sure their children are getting all of the nu-trients they need to grow and thrive. The good news is that shopping, cooking and eating healthfully have just gotten easier with assistance from www.kidseatright.org, a new website from ADA and its Foundation.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines Advi-sory Committee recently reported that children, teens and adults have diets deficient in dietary fiber, vitamin D, calcium and potassium, and the Kids Eat Right campaign calls for increased attention to the alarming nutrient defi-ciencies in children's diets.

"Weight is not the only measure of good nutrition and health. Any child — whether they are of normal weight, overweight or obese — can be under-nourished," says registered dietitian Dr. Katie Brown, national education director for the American Dietetic As-sociation Foundation.

"Quality nutrition requires a total diet approach that goes beyond calorie counting alone, to focus on includ-ing those nutrients critical for a child's healthy growth and development," Brown says. "This year's National Nu-trition Month theme is a great remind-

er for parents to focus on that total diet approach by including a variety of foods and colors in every meal, every day."

Brown offers the following guidance for helping your kids "Eat Right with Color":•Give kids whole-grain cereals for breakfast, kid-friendly "white" whole-wheat bread for sandwiches, crunchy whole-grain crackers for snacks and whole-grain pastas for dinner. •Eat more fruits and vegetables at ev-ery meal. At breakfast, enjoy fresh or frozen berries on cereal, slices of mel-on or a glass of 100 percent orange juice; at lunch, serve baby carrots or sliced apples; for dinner, put brightly colored vegetables at the center of ev-ery plate.•Most young people in America are not getting enough calcium or potas-sium. Fortunately, it's easy to consume the three daily dairy servings children and teens need. Try an 8-ounce glass of low-fat milk with breakfast, lunch and dinner; yogurt parfaits for break-fast or an after-school snack; or string cheese for an on-the-go energy snack.•Getting enough protein at every meal and snack helps kids feel satis-fied after eating. Start their day with egg or bean burritos. For snacks, pro-vide peanut butter or sliced deli meat.

Designed around a SHOP, COOK and EAT theme, the Kids Eat Right website provides parents with practical tips, articles, videos and recipes from reg-istered dietitians to help families shop smart, cook healthy and eat right.

BRICK TOWNSHIP-- Brick Memorial Wrestling defeated East Brunswick 58-11 on February 13 to earn the right to defend their title in the Central Jer-sey Group 4 final that they won a year ago at Jackson Memorial. This year, they advanced to meet Howell, who the Mustangs beat 30-28 in last year’s semifinal. They improved upon that margin this year with a 34-19 win to repeat as sectional champions.

This year’s semifinal was a significant departure from the semifinal nail-biter. The Mustangs earned six points each from pins scored by senior, Matt Moore, at 220, junior, Tyler Poling, at heavyweight, freshman, Luke Vescovi, at 106 (in 11 seconds), and senior, Connor Maliff, at 113. Technical falls were awarded to sophomore, Cliff

Ruggiero, at 152, senior, Tyler Richard-son, at 170 and junior, Joseph Ghione, at 120, while sophomore, Rob Ruggie-ro, earned a major decision at 145. Sophomore, Connor Owen (182), ju-nior, Nicholas Costa (195), and senior, Jared Staub, added decision victories for Brick, while sophomore, Jose Bo-calman, was awarded a forfeit victory at 126.

“East Brunswick had some very game wrestlers,” said Brick Memorial coach, wrestlers,” said Brick Memorial coach, wrestlers,”Dan O’Cone. “We are hoping to im-prove our performance in several of the weight classes.”

Moore’s pin of East Brunswick’s Mi-chael Quintin at 2:54 improved his unblemished season record to 22-0. He hasn’t lost since dropping a major

decision to Delsea’s Bryan Dobzanski in last year’s 195 pound state tourna-ment before taking seventh place with a decision win over Nick Gaeta. “Bar-“Bar-“Barring injury, (Moore) should be the third

seed in the state tournament,” O’Cone said.

On February 15, Brick Memorial re-peated as sectional champions. Moore continued his undefeated season with a pin over Howell’s, Joe Sportiello, in 17 seconds, while Ghione earned his 100th career win with a major deci-sion win over Anthony Piazza at 120. At 138, Alec Donovan dealt Howell’s Ben Esposito his first loss of the year with a decision win.

LINCROFT - It was a game worthy of a final, but fourth-seeded Middletown South finally outlasted fifth-seeded Rumson-Fair Haven Regional, 51-50, in an overtime thriller to gain the semi-finals of the Shore Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday at Brookdale.

Coming into the game, South (20-2), wanted to prove a point and proceed-ed to do it after a hard struggle with the Lady Bulldogs.

"We've had good teams," said South coach Tom Brennan, "but traditionally, it always seems to be RBC, St. John Vi-anney, Rumson and Point Boro, but we proved that we belonged there also."

The final seconds in overtime proved to be a wild affair in which Rumson al-most completed a stunning comeback.

Two free throws by South's Jackie Dluhi with 20 seconds remaining in the over-time gave the Eagles what appeared to be a safe 51-46 lead, but Rumson freshman, Nicole Morris, hit a trey from the right corner with nine seconds left to make it a two point game.South turned the ball over on the en-suing inbounds pass, giving Rumson a chance for a tie. Grace Stant was fouled on a drive to the basket. She missed her first attempt, but made the second to cut the lead to 51-50 with six seconds left.

South's Kieran Gannon was fouled on the inbounds pass, but missed the first of a one and one, giving Rumson one more chance. However, the Lady Bulldogs had no time outs remaining and a desperation shot missed at the buzzer.

Rumson grabbed a 41-37 lead with four minutes remaining in regulation time on three-pointers by Emma Miller and Hope LoPresti, but it went score-less the rest of the way and South final-ly tied it on baskets by Olivia Liskowitz and Bluhi, setting up the wild overtime.

Rumson raced out to a 10-3 lead with seven straight points, five of them by Hannah Miller, but South went on a 13-0 run to grab an 18-11 lead as Bluhi and Brianna Gray scored six and five points, respectively. Rumson rallied and finally regained the lead at 33-31 on LoPresti's trey. There were several more lead changes until the thrilling finish, "It was a great ball game and it was a shame that someone had to lose,"was a shame that someone had to lose,"was a shame that someone hadsaid Rumson coach, George Sourlis.

"What hurt us was that we turned the ball over in the nal seconds of both the second and third quarters and South scored both times," he said.scored both times," he said.scored both times,"

The Holmdel girls basketball team is the number six seed in the Shore Con-ference Tournament and with a 15 win and 7 loss record this season the Hor-nets defeated Marlboro (15 win and 7 loss record and the #11 seed) in the first round of the Shore Conference Tourna-ment by the score of 60 to 38. The Hor-nets will move on to play Point Boro in the next round of the Shore Conference Tournament. Point Boro is the #3 seed.

The Hornets had a balanced offensive attack on offense as Tara Inman scored 17 points, Morgan Graziano scored 16 points, and Tori Cardeaci added 10 points. Holmdel also did a great job on defense as they held the Mustangs to 16 second half points while leading by only 5 points at halftime (27 to 22) before taking over the game in the second half and winning by 22 points. Part of that great defense was Holmdel's rebound-ing and steals as Inman grabbed 7 re-bounds and had six steals. Cardaci also had 6 steals and added 7 assists. Fon-tana also grabbed 7 rebounds and she led a key 11 to 6 run in the third quar-ter giving the Hornets a 10-point lead. In the fourth quarter, it was Graziano who finished off Marlboro by scoring 12 points in the quarter for the win.

MANASQUAN— Parity has reigned in the Shore Conference this season, so it is not surprising that the Shore Conference Tournament is looking like one of the more wide open tour-naments in years. Manasquan has been considered one of the top teams all season, but met some stiff compe-tition while battling to a 17-2 regular season record. Their SCT Round of 16 opponent, Long Branch, has been a confusing team to follow during the season. The Green Wave (12-9) suf-fered some losses to sub .500 teams, yet proved capable of defeating top teams such as Point Beach, the SCT’s #2 seed.

Both teams brought strong efforts to their game last Thursday eve-ning. Long Branch came out strong in opening quarter and jumped out to a 17-9 lead. Dwight Clark, who finished with a game-high 25 points,

and Terrell Cox (16 points) paced the Green Wave offensively. They com-bined for five three-point field goals as Long Branch carried a lead into the fourth quarter. But Manasquan was determined not to go down ear-ly in the tournament. Senior Jimmy Walsh poured in eight points in the fourth quarter to finish with 21 on the night. Tom Tolle chipped in with 16 points and J.R. Hobbie reached dou-ble figures with 11. The 3rd seeded Warriors had their best offensive and defensive quarter in the fourth and rallied to a 57-55 victory to advance.

The win set up a Sunday quarterfi-nal matchup with Jackson Memorial (19-4). The winner would earn a date with either 2nd seeded Point Beach or 10th seed Manalapan in the SCT semifinals.

LAKEWOOD-- Top-seeded Lakewood (19-1) survived a scare in the second round of the Shore Conference Tour-nament, rallying from a four-point halftime deficit to overtake No. 17 Middletown North (12-11), 60-44 on February 14. The win set up a quarter-final meeting with upset-minded Ma-tawan on February 17.

Despite the gap between seeds and difference in records between the two teams, the Lions more than held their own in a low-scoring first half that saw the teams join forces to put 34 points on the board. Middletown North rode its first half momentum into the begin-ning minutes of the second half and saw its lead grow to nine points before the Piners exploded for a 12-0 run to

end the third quarter and gave them a 34-31 lead. Lakewood took control from there, outscoring the Lions 26-13 in the final quarter to beat back the upset attempt. Tyrice Beverette was Lakewood’s top scorer in the win with 16 points.

“(Middletown North has) tremendous shooters and in the rst half they gave us a run for our money,” Lakewood coach, Randy Holmes, said after the game. “In the second half, we imposed our will.”

The win put the Piners on a collision course with surprising Matawan, the lowest-seeded team remaining in the tournament. The 24th-seeded Huskies have proven themselves a tough out, knocking off ninth-seeded Red Bank Catholic 45-37 on February 12 and stunning eighth-seeded CBA with a Joe Piscopo buzzer-beater that gave them a 51-50 win on February 14.

“Matawan is a scrappy team; they’re well coached,” Holmes said before the February 17 showdown. “What we’re going to do is play hard, play our pres-sure D, and try to turn them over.”

LINCROFT— Point Beach stepped onto the court undefeated, but St. John Vi-anney made sure they walked off the court tasting defeat for the first time this season. The Lancers defeated the Gar-net Gulls, 76-54, in the quarterfinals of

the girls’ basketball Shore Conference Tournament at Brookdale Community College. SJV, the 2nd seed in the tour-nament, proved to have a deeper, more well-rounded roster than Point Beach. The Gulls were in the game early with the score 36-28 at halftime, but the wheels came off in the second half.

Senior, Lindsay Rowe, a Wagner com-mit, led the Lancers with 22 points and freshman, Emily Uribe, poured in 18. Forward, Katie Beriont, and guard, Jackie Gallagher, also reached double figures with 14 and 13 points respec-tively. SJV used a big advantage on the boards to steadily pull away from Point Beach. Marina Mabrey scored 31 and Katelynn Flaherty had 23 points as they scored all of the points for the Gulls.

Earlier in the Round of 16, SJV rolled past Matawan for a 61-47 win. They extended a 10-point halftime lead to near 20-points by the fourth quarter. Katie Beriont led the way with 14 points. Three other players including Em-ily Uribe, Jackie Gallagher, and Kelly

Campbell ended in double figures. The Lancers, who are playing without senior star, Kat Egan, who is out due to injury, will face Point Boro in the SCT semifi-nals at Brookdale at 6pm on Tuesday, February 19th.

POINT PLEASANT - Through much of last season it was then junior, Kelly Hughes, that pushed the fast paced tempo for the Point Pleasant Boro girls’ basketball team. This season as a senior she has a deeper supporting cast that includes her sister, Lau-ren Hughes.

The sisters have the Panthers’ one game from the Shore Conference Tournament with a rematch against St. John Vianney who handed Boro their only loss back in Janu-ary. Kelly who has been a scoring machine at the Jer-sey Shore for the past four years continued her scoring this season with 24.6 points per game and her sister, Lauren, with 19.3 points per game. The Hughes sisters along with Kerry Malleck and Lindsey Havens have the Panthers offense clicking on all cylinders.

Coming off their impressive win over a highly talented Rumson Fair Haven squad in the finals of the WOBM clas-sic, this group looks primed at making a run at the Shore Conference sweep next week for the Shore Conference Ti-tle. Up first, they will need to slow down a Vianney squad that has revitalized them-selves after the loss of Kat Egan and opened up their offensive play. If the Pan-thers should get by the Lanc-ers they will look at a possi-ble rematch against Rumson Fair Haven.

The Panthers are also on the fast track at another NJSIAA Title shot with a number one seed in the Central Jersey Group II Tournament but once again will have to get the through possibly for the third time this season Rum-son Fair Haven and a hun-gry Manasquan team that is looking to repeat last sea-son’s success.

The Ocean wrestling team has had a successful season with a 19 win and 6 loss record, but coach Cippy Api-celli knew beating Brick (18 wins and 5 losses) would be a tough task and even though the Spartans gave great effort and coach Apicelli tried some moving of the roster, the Spartans came up short against Brick losing by the score of 42 to 23.

Ocean was trying to win a sectional championship that was Brick's second championship.

Brick used wins by their top wrestlers along with some other wins to ensure the title. Dan Wojtaszek (24 win and 3 loss record) got a pin over Viet Le in 1:08. Dan’s brother Kyle was also a winner as he pinned Ocean's Patrick Tracey in 2:37.

When Ocean won the toss and bumped some wrestlers to different weight classes to try and gain an ad-

vantage, Brick was able to answer at every chance they got. Ocean bumped Tommy Lyster, who normally wrestles at 185, up to wrestle at 220 pounds, which meant Jacob Bell would wres-tle at 185. The first part of the move worked as Lyster won his match with a pin, but Bell lost a tough 7 to 4 deci-sion to Anthony Dzugan.

In the earlier matches Ocean won at 138 pounds with an 8 to 2 decision by Zach Hertling over Dean Sherry. T.J. Saldutti lost a hard fought 3 to 0 decision to Brick's Nick Pollara and Nick Colalillo lost a tough pin to Steve Cimmino. Brick's pair of junior great wrestlers also came through as they have for most of the season as Dan Rackliffe and Conor Mulligan both registered pins.

Coach Apicelli was proud of his team and said, " We needed 5 or 6 things to go our way and they just didn't work out."

Matawan sophomore guard Joe Piscopo led all scorers with 20 points and also knocked down a buzzer-beating fade away jumper to lead the 24th-seeded Huskies to a dramatic 51-50 win over the eighth-seeded CBA Colts in a Shore Conference Round of 16 matchup in Lincroft on February 14th.It was the Colts first home loss of this season and also their first home in the SCT since joining the Shore Conference in 1982.

“Piscopo was tremendous,” Matawan “Piscopo was tremendous,” Matawan “Piscopo was tremendous,”coach Tom Stead said. “We used a lot of ball screens to get him open and he shoots the ball very well o the dribble. He’s only a 5’8” sophomore, but he has the heart of a lion.”

With CBA (15-7) leading 24-19 at half-time, Matawan (12-9) used suffocating defense during the third quarter hold-ing the Colts to just eight points and the Huskies ended up going into the fourth quarter with a 33-32 lead. Sophomore guard Jason Dunne provided the spark for the Huskies during the third quarter scoring eight of his 10 points.

“We played very well defensively and we didn’t want to give Pat Andree and Kevin Neller open looks at the basket,” Stead said.

With the Huskies trailing 50-49 with 19 seconds left in the game, Matawan had a timeout to use, but Stead decided not to use it. Piscopo ended up missing a shot and then senior forward, Ian Phillip (eight points), and junior forward, Nick

Tomkins (five points), each had chances at putbacks that came up short. The ball ended up coming loose in the paint and Phillip made a spectacular play diving into the pile and getting a hand on the ball and rolling it to Piscopo. Piscopo then buried a jump shot as time expired making the final score 51-50 setting off a wild celebration by the Matawan stu-dent section who stormed the court in jubilation.

Also having a solid game for the Hus-kies was junior forward, Chris Tawiah, who scored eight points. “We knew go-ing into the game that we had our work cut out for us and playing in front of the Colt Crazies can be pretty overwhelm-ing,” Stead said.ing,” Stead said.ing,”

During the preliminary round of the SCT, the Huskies stunned the ninth-seeded RBC Caseys (13-7) by the score of 45-37.

According to Stead, it was the Huskies first SCT win in at least eight seasons.Tawiah, who netted all his points on four 3-pointers had six points during the third quarter when Matawan outscored RBC, 13-10 to increase a 15-12 halftime lead to 28-22. Piscopo led the Huskies with 15 points, which included three 3-point-ers.

The Huskies were scheduled to face the top-seeded Lakewood Piners on Febru-ary 17th at Brookdale Community Col-lege in a SCT quarterfinal game. Ac-cording to Stead, it was Matawan’s first trip to the SCT quarterfinals since 1958.

MANALAPAN— The opening round of the Handchen Cup got underway last week and it didn’t take long for things to shake up. The 8th seeded Manala-pan ice hockey team stunned top seed Rumson-Fair Haven (15-5-2) by a score of 6-1. The upset immediately sent shockwaves through the bracket with the heavily favored Bulldogs down for the count. The Braves (14-10) used the hot stick for Patrick Gaglione, an opportunistic power play, and stellar goaltending to pull off the upset.

Gaglione, a junior forward, turned in a hat trick with two of the goals com-ing in the second period to help ice the game. He also added an assist. Fellow junior, Mike Lisciandro, scored twice including the game’s first goal to stake Manalapan to a 1-0 lead. RFH an-

The Shore Regional boys’ basketball team is having a great season with a 16 win and 5 loss season and they have been ranked in the top ten in the Shore Conference for most of the season. The Blue Devil's have used an up tempo style of play all season while using the three point shot as a major weap-on in their offense, but against Manala-pan in the first round of the Shore Confer-ence Tournament just couldn't get their of-fense going and fell to the Braves by the score of 73 to 57.

After a slow start, Shore Regional got back into the game and brought the score to 16 to 11 at the end of the first quarter, but the offense was still not enough as the Blue devil's fell further behind and trailed 28 to 15 at halftime.

As they have all season long, the Blue Devil's fought back and kept coming at

the Braves trying to mount a comeback, but Manalapan's Anthony Firkster was too much to stop as he finished with 21 points. Other Braves’ who added to

the victory were Mike Pyzik who scored 17 points and Mike Busto who added 16 points.

The Blue devil's were led in scoring by Dan Pillari who scored a team high 14 points. The rest of Shore's scoring was balanced as Connor Rogers and Brian Dubois each scored 9 points and Ben Hess scored 7 points. Kevin Blood-good and Jack Byrne each added 6 points.

The Blue Devil's will look to get back on the winning track as

they enter the NJSIAA state tournament where they are the number four seed. If Shore gets back to their style of play they should be able to make a run in the state tournament. They will also play some tune up games before the state tournament begins.

JERSEY SHORE— The Dowd Cup and Handchen Cup ice hockey tournaments began last week. The two torunaments are essentially the Shore Conference Tournament of ice hockey, but are divided into two divisions. The top seed in the Dowd Cup is Brick Township who was set to face 8th seeded Toms River North last weekend. Wall, the #2 seed, already advanced with an 8-4 win over Toms River East. J.T. Tarantino had four goals to spark the Crimson Knights back from a 2-0 deficit after

one period. Wall will likely face 3rd seed Brick Memorial in the semifi-nals. Point Boro and Southern were set to face off in the 4th versus 5th seed game for the right to possibly play Brick Township.

In the Handchen Cup, Manalapan already shocked the shore with an upset of top seed Rumson-Fair Ha-ven. Now the Braves will take on 4th seed St. Rose in the semifinals. The Purple Roses were 6-4 winners over Freehold Township. St. John Vianney,

the #2 seed, shut out Howell 3-0 last week to advance. Timothy Gal-lat had a goal and an assist and Mi-chael Davie had two assists to pace the Lancers. Sam Zietara and Matt Kidney also scored for SJV. Goalten-der James Ellis stopped all 36 shots

that he faced. The Lancers will play the winner between 3rd seed Middle-town North and 6th seed Red Bank Catholic. The Lions were favored to win on Sunday led by sophomore, Tom Terranova, as their leading scorer.

LINCROFT - Red Bank Catholic had beaten A Division Central rival Manasquan twice in a pair of regular season games this year and RBC coach, Joe Montano, knowing that it is difficult to beat a good team three times in a row, wanted to start off quickly in Satur-day's quarterfinal game with the War-riors at Brookdale Commnity College.

Montano's game plan was accom-plished with the Caseys coasting to a 45-31 win in which it was never threat-ened after grabbing a 16-4 first quarter lead. That set up a semifinal match with Middletown South, which had beaten Rumson-Fair Haven Regional 51-50 in overtime Saturday. It will be the first

meeting between RBC and South since the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament in 2006.

"I was pleased that we got off to a good start," said Montano. "I didn't want Manasquan to get any condence. Their coach (Lisa Kukoda) is doing a tre-mendous job with that team considering she lost three Division I players." Kukoda she lost three Division I players." Kukoda she lost three Division I players."is a former RBC player who played for Montano a few years ago.

In winning, RBC made use of a solid de-fense and good fundamentals, along with balanced scoring in holding the Warriors to just 10 points in the first half. Alex Alfano, Mary Kate Caverly and Grace Fallon led the way for RBC with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively. "It's hard to pick out a kid every day," said Montano, now in his 22nd year as head girls coach at RBC. “If one of our play-“If one of our play-“If one of our players is shut down,  others have to step up and do some things. Manasquan made a brief run, but could get no closer than 34-23 early in the fourth quarter as RBC slowed up the pace.

"We haven't been to the nal four in a cou-ple of years," said Alfano, one of three se-nior starters on the team. "We worked very hard to get there. We came into the game knowing what we had to do and we did it. We were condent."

LONG BRANCH – It all came down to the final match of the night, with Long Branch (18-5) holding a precarious 27-23 lead over Delaware Valley. Tak-ing the mat at 126 pounds for Long Branch was sophomore, Andy Her-nandez (16-11), with the weight of an-other sectional championship weigh-ing solely on his shoulders.

Delaware Valley’s Mike Adams (12-6) knew he needed a major decision or better for the Terriers to take home their 15th sectional title. He was the favorite to win the bout, but there was immense pressure on both wrestlers.

“I told Hernandez to ‘wrestle to win’,” Long Branch coach Dan George said. “I didn’t want him to wrestle tentative, that’s when you get pinned. So many of these matches could have gone either way, they know how to slow you down and get the pin.”

Hernandez was pinned in Wednes-day’s semifinal bout and that was still fresh in his mind. “I just warmed up re-ally well, and stayed focused on tonight the whole time. Wednesday night I was not prepared, but I had condence to-night. Nick (Pappayliou) gave me a great pep speech, I had to stay calm and wrestle my hardest.”

Hernandez did that and more, har-nessing three takedowns to defeat Adams 6-2, and hand Long Branch a ‘Heart Stopping’ 30-23 victory and their fifth sectional title in the last six years.

“This feels as good as our rst one (2008). We lost so many close matches this year; it’s hard to believe we’re back on top of the mountain. This match

was like our season, a roller coaster.”George said.

The sectional final was close through-out the match. It was 10-10 after four bouts and 16-16 after seven. After 10 weights, Long Branch held a slim 21-19 advantage. With four bouts re-maining, it was anyone’s match to win.

Sophomore, Mike Jones (23-6), was up next at 106 for the Green Wave. His four takedowns held off Kyle Re-falvy for a 10-8 decision, before soph-omore, Tommy Flannigan (15-6), re-strained Terrier Vito Intili, taking a 8-2 decision.

Now ahead 27-19, Long Branch sent freshman, Danny Rios (5-10), to the mat at 120 against Delaware Valleys Ryan Irwin. Irwin out-muscled Rios to gain a major decision win. The win pulled the Terriers to within four points, 27-23, but it wasn’t enough as the Green Wave had Hernandez waiting in the wings to wrap up the match in dramatic fashion.

Senior, Nick George (28-3), gained a fall at 145 and senior, Luke Balina (18-5), earned a major decision win at 152. Senior, Jake George (26-4), followed with a 6-4 decision at 160 before junior, Arturo Rios (16-7), and seniors, Chris Pappaylioiu (26-4) and Joe Guidetti (16-8), won decisions at 182, 190, and 220 respectively.

Long Branch will face Voorhees in a Group II semifinal 10:00 a.m. Sunday, at Pine Belt Arena.
