HOWELL – Perhaps Howell’s loss to the Phillipsburg (10-2), ranked #7 in the NJWWA Polls, last Saturday was a good thing moving forward.

You really can’t blame the Rebels (21-2), if maybe they were a little compla-cent. After all, they’d just reeled off 18 consecutive wins, were ranked fifth in the Shore and sixteenth in the State. However, when you go up against a team as rich in wrestling heritage as Phillipsburg has, you have to be at the top of your game.

It was the kind of wakeup call that hits you on the side of the head, letting you know you have some work to do. It was a humbling experience, time to refocus, get back to the basics and be-

ing prepared.

That’s exactly what the Rebels did, as they bounced back nicely Thurs-day night, defeating a determined Neptune squad, 37-23, in the Shore Conference Tournament Pre-Quarters, then handled the Shore’s sixth ranked team and No. 5 seed, Brick Township, 43-19, in the Quarterfinals.

In the Pre-Quarters, the match was tied 15-15 after six bouts. Junior, Na-than Litowsky (17-6), and sophomore, Mikey Sisolak (13-4), registered pins at 182 and 106 respectively. Junior, Steven Boncimino (18-7), added a 6-0 decision over Keysan Johnson.

The Rebels then took control of the

match, winning six of the final eight bouts. Undefeated senior and 2012 District 21 Champion, Ben Esposito (21-0), won a major decision, 11-3, over Tareeq Hamilton. 2012 District 21 Camp, Senior, Ashanti Maurice (21-4), followed Esposito with a hard fought 4-3 decision over two-time District 23 runner-up Sekou Harris.

In the Quarterfinals, Brick Township was without two starters and forfeited three weights as Howell rolled to a 43-19 victory and a trip to the SCT Final Four.

Nick Lurski won by forfeit in the first match to hand the Rebels a quick 6-0 lead. Junior, Kyle Cocozza (18-5), then won a 3-2 decision over Mike Nasen at Heavyweight, and freshman, An-thony Gagliano (17-4), added a 4-1 decision over Daniel Rackliffe at 106 for a 12-12 tie after five matches.

Howell then won the next five bouts to take a commanding 34-12 lead. Se-

nior, Nick Braiuca (6-7), pinned Zack Botnick at 3:25, sophomore, Anthony Piazza (15-9), and Ashanti Maurice won decisions, and freshman phenom, Kris Lindemann (24-2), added a major decision win during the five-match run.

Junior, Joey Schultz, holding an im-pressive 23-5 season record, added a 10-3 decision over Dante Vega-Anfuso before Litowsky’s forfeit win, for the fi-nal margin of victory, 43-19.

The fourth seed Rebels will take on the No. 1 seed Toms River South Indians, Saturday at 3:00p.m. @ Pine Belt Are-na on the campus of Toms River North. The winner will move on to face the winner of the Brick Memorial (2 seed) vs. Jackson Memorial (3 seed) match-up.

The Indians (19-2-1) are the Shores number one ranked team, and fourth in the NJWWA Polls, so it shapes up to be a tremendous dual.

There are many reasons, beyond tal-ent alone, why the Jackson Memorial wrestling program is so successful, not just over the course of a few years, but over several decades.

The student-athletes on the Jaguars' roster believe in themselves, their teammates, their coaches and they are

committed to continuing the fine tradi-tion on the mat.

This winter Jackson is paced by solid leadership and has newcomers mak-ing positive impacts throughout the lineup. Not surprisingly, the Jags are once again a top notch squad in the state.

“Brian Hamann (senior, 138 pounds) leads through his work ethic and per-formance on the mat,'' Jackson Memo-rial head coach, Aaron Gottesman, said. “Spencer Young (senior, 145) is a vocal leader who continually reinforces the values of the program. Ken Brad-ley (junior, 195) leads due to the high respect that his teammates give him.

"Our team has a bunch of new faces, who did not have much varsity time in the past, if any. Fred Terranova (sopho-more, 106), Hunter Reese (sophomore, 126), Jarret DiGiantomosso (sopho-more, 132), Brandon Carroll (senior, 152), Connor Bohringer (sophomore, 160), Sean Leahey (sophomore, 138), James Langshultz (junior, 182), Bro-die Graham (freshman, 220), Daylan Wellstead (senior, 170), Zack Baker (junior, 113), Vin Falzarano (senior, 120) and Max Mondello (senior, 285) have all improved in all aspects, from conditioning, to strength, to mat awareness and just overall toughness and desire to win.''

Once again, Jackson will be a ma-jor force in the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV Sectional Tournament. The Jags last won the Central Jersey Group IV as well as the State Group IV cham-pionships in 2011.

For fans of high school wrestling in the Garden State, it may feel as though the season is simply flying by - indeed District Tournaments are scheduled to get underway on February 15.

Colts Neck High School, a pro-gram that struggled out of the gates this season, seemed to have found its stride a bit toward the end of January. The Cougars who dropped eight matches in row from the beginning to the middle of January, found some footing by going 3-0 in a recent quad-meet with triumphs over Red Bank Regional (34-27), Saint Rose (42-18), and Monmouth Re-gional (44-25). The success that the Cougars are earning is coming at a crucial time in the season as teams and individuals gear up for the post-season. Colts Neck, now under the guidance of first year head coach Brett Jankos, has some in-dividual wrestlers to watch at the District 21 Tournament.

Nick Ottaviano (junior, 113 pounds), Pete Ottaviano (senior, 120) and Dylan Campbell (junior,

132) anchor the lower weight classes. Senior, Frank Lefkowitz, is having a solid season for the Cougars at 220 pounds.

Jankos himself had a very suc-cessful career while at Brick Me-morial, including a fourth place finish in the State Tournament in 2002. Colts Neck's last State place winner was Tyler Fraley, who placed second in the 103-pound class in 2010.

The Brick Township wrestling team is off to an 11 win and 5 loss record so far this season and they are ranked number seven in the Shore Confer-ence. The Green Dragons were able to reach the quarterfinals of the Shore Conference Tournament before losing to Howell (21-2) by the score of 43 to 19. The Green dragons reached the quarterfinals by defeating Manalapan (12-9) by the score of 40 to 32 in the round of 16.

Entering the Shore Conference Tourna-ment, the Green Dragons won matches against Raritan, 33 to 26, and Lacey, 45 to 21. Entering the Shore Confer-ence Tournament on a two game win-ning streak, Brick beat Manalapan (40

to 32) with Kyle Marino (106 lbs.), Nick Pollaral (152 lbs.), Dan Rackliffe (113 lbs.), Kyle Wojttaszek (132 lbs.), and Tony Dzugan (220 lbs.) all recording pins. Mike Nasen (200 lbs.), Connor Mulligan (120 lbs.), Tom Wright (126 lbs.), Steve Commino (145 lbs.), Bill Scott (160 lbs.), and Dan Wojtaszek all recorded wins.

Moving on to the quarterfinals of the Shore Conference Tournament, the Green Dragons put up a valiant fight, but could not outmatch Howell (21-2) with Tony Dzugan and Con-nor Mulligan each earning pins, while Kyle Wojtaszek, Bill Scott and Dan Wojtaszek able to register winning de-cisions.

The Long Branch Wrestling team is having a successful season with a 14-4 record and by being ranked num-ber six in the Shore Conference. The Green Wave also reached the quarter-finals of the Shore Conference Tourna-ment before losing a hard fought 32 to 28 decision. Long Branch did win their round of sixteen match ups against Toms River North by the score of 40 to 18.

Leading up to the Shore Conference Tournament and the match against the Jaguars, the Green Wave had con-vincing wins against Christian Broth-ers Academy, 40 to 23, and Haddon Heights, 57 to 12.

In the win over CBA, Long Branch started by splitting the first four weight classes before winning five consecutive weight classes in a row to secure the victory. Nick George (145 lbs.) won a 16 to 0 decision, Jake George (152

lbs.) won a 20 to 5 decision, Nick Pap-payliou (160 lbs.) won a 17 to 2 deci-sion, Arturo Rios (170 lbs.) won a 8 to 6 decision, and Chris Pappayliou (182 lbs.) won a 11 to 3 decision. After fall-ing at 195 pounds, the Green Wave scored a victory with a pin by Vincent Roselli at 220 pounds and Gianna Au-gustin won a forfeit at 285 pounds.

Long Branch was even more dominant in their win over Haddon Heights. They recorded 6 pins in the match with Ja-son Hernandez , Jake George, Nick Pappayliou, Vincent Roselli, and Joey Jasio. Nick Menkin, Nick George, and Arturo Rios also recorded wins.

In the Shore Conference Tourna-ment match against Jackson Memo-rial, Long Branch's Nick George lost a tough match at 145 pounds to Brian Hermann and the Jaguars went on a roll through the middle weights with Spencer Young and Alex Huxford re-

cording victories. Long Branch had defeated Toms River North to start the evening and advance to the quarter-finals against Jackson Memorial. Head coach, Dan George, said, "Our kids competed again, but you split 7 to 7, you have to find a way to minimize the bonus and the bouts you can win. Jackson did a better job of that".

LINCROFT – Christian Brothers Academy’s (CBA) inexperience was too much to over-come as the young Colts (7-1,4-1) lost a 42-18 match to Howell Township (15-1,5-0) Friday night in Lincroft.

The loss drops the Colts into second place in the Shore Conference Class A North Divi-sion. Howell, ranked 14th in the state and 5th in the Shore, takes over sole possession of first place.

CBA is coming off one of its most success-ful seasons in school history. The 2012 Colts (23-8) ranked 23rd in the state and 8th in the Shore Conference in season ending polls.

However, the Colts graduated seven starters, including the Shore Conference.com Wres-tler of the Year, Hayden Hrymack (42-2). Hrymack placed fifth in the NJSIAA Tourna-ment and first in the District 22 and Region 22 championships.

Combined, those seven seniors accounted for 188 wins in the 2012 season, and the Colts were expected to transition into a re-building year.

CBA is stacked with underclassmen, includ-ing eight freshman, three sophomores, seven juniors and only one senior competing this year. Regardless, they do possess a small, but very talented nucleus of experienced grap-plers.

Juniors, Eric Beshada (126) and Christian Casselli (138), are back after tremendous 2012 campaigns. Beshada (35-5) won the District 22 Tournament and placed second in the Region 6 Tournament. This year he won the Colts Classic and placed second in the Walter Wood Tournament.

In Friday night’s featured match, Beshada upped his season record to 12-1, with 3-0 decision over freshman, Kris Lindeman (19-2). Potentially, these two extremely talented grapplers will see a lot of each other in the upcoming post-season tournaments.

Casselli placed second in the District 22 Tour-

nament last year and won this year’s Colt Classic along with placing third in the Walter Woods Tournament.

In another spotlight match Friday night, Cas-selli (5-2) lost a hard fought 3-1 overtime decision to undefeated Ben Esposito (19-0).

Another pair of juniors, Mike Oxley (182) and Tyler Mabry (145), provides the Colts some added experience. Oxley, 11-6 last year, has been a force while posting an im-pressive 14-1 record so far this year.

Oxley registered one of the Colts two pins Friday night, finishing off junior Nathan Litowsky (12-5) at 2:22 of the match.

Mabry (138), who registered 12 wins against 15 defeats last year, lost a major decision Friday night to senior, Ashanti Maurice (16-4).

Lone senior, Nick Mellon (132), who missed all of last season with an injury, is back after placing third in the 2012 District 22 Tourna-ment.

Mellon is back to 2012 form as he tabled the Colts second pin of the night, dropping se-nior, James Sisoiak (10-7), at the 1:47 mark of the match. With the win, Mellon’s record improved to (9-2).

Freshmen, Sebastian Rivera, Carl Vasti, Dylan VanSickell, Ben Kuhn, Jack LaCorte, Chris Koutzen, Will Oxley and Bill Hroesbeck, have combined for 37 wins this season, while sophomores, Nick Koutzen, Justin Kieslor and Alex Petrocelli, have contributed seven wins.

VanSickell (6-5) lost a grueling 10-8 overtime decision Friday night to junior, Jimmy Slen-dorn (18-2).

With so many talented underclassmen, the future is very bright for this Colt’s team. How-ever, don’t be shocked if they continue to surprise as the season progresses and make a statement in the post season.

MIDDLETOWN NORTH - Despite playing against a smaller school, Middletown North's 43-26 girls’ bas-ketball win over Mater Dei meant a lot to Middletown North head coach, Ed Jones, and his team. "Mater Dei is only a mile away from us," said Jones, now in his 27th season as a head coach. "The kids know each other and this was important for us."

Middletown North (11-4) started slowly and trailed 8-6 late in the first quarter, but North scored the final

six points of the period starting with a three-pointer by Nicole Tellevsen and never looked back. It led, 27-14, at the half and built the margin to 20 points late in the third quarter.

"I wasn't happy at the start," said Jones, who picked up his 400th var-sity coaching victory with a win over Delsea two weeks ago. He coached at Red Bank Catholic for a few years be-fore taking over at Middletown North. "We played better after the first quar-ter and concentrated on defense," said Jones. "We lost to three teams in our division and another to Matwan. I wasn't happy with that and we had to work on our concentration. We have one more division game Tuesday against Colts Neck. "We have a bal-anced offense," said Jones, "but Ni-cole, Mia Ehling and Emily Lavin have been playing well for us."

Mater Dei (6-9) in contrast, is strug-gling with a very young team, but new coach Tom Weston is optimistic about the future. "We're a very young team and are a work in progress," Weston

pointed out. "I'm getting used to them and they are getting used to me. I'm trying to implement my system. I'm pleased with our execution and hustle. I'm hoping for a couple of wins down the road, but our schedule has hurt us," he noted. "We have only one se-nior, but this is a great group of kids to work with and we've come a long way. "I'm excited about the future and we just have to keep it going." .

LONG BRANCH— It has been a banner season for the Long Branch girls’ swimming team. The Green Wave are putting together perhaps the best season in school history with a top five finish in the Mon-mouth County Championships and a host of school records falling. Long Branch was brimming with confidence, the team finished 4th in the Shore Conference champion-ships on Saturday. Brenna Strollo qualified for states in the 100 back-stroke and the team qualified in the medley relay.

“I feel blessed with the group of swimmers we have on our team. They all have a super work ethic, great attitudes, and are dedicated swimmers,” says head coach, Jere-my Julio. “Long Branch is moving in the right direction and I know these swimmers are excited to create their legacy. The girls will finish with the best team record in Long Branch history. Every meet we lost came down to the very end of the meet. This year has been exciting and we hope to keep it going in the Shore Conference and states.”

Every school record other than the 100 breaststroke has been broken this season. As a team, they’ve shat-tered the 200 medley, 200 freestyle, and 400 freestyle records. Junior Hannah Elliott is now the top pace setter in the 100 fly (1:00.13) and the 500 freestyle (5:21.20). Hayley Masi, another junior, has the re-cords for the 50 freestyle (0:24.79) and the 100 freestyle (0:53.42). Senior, Brenna Strollo, now owns the mark for the 100 backstroke (1:01.69). Emily Balina, a freshman, is the fourth swimmer who has been a part of the record breaking relay teams.

“It’s rewarding to look up at the re-cord board to see that my team and I broke so many of the records that were standing for so long,” says Hannah Elliott. “Jeremy (Julio) was the coach last year and this is his second year. He does a great job of getting us excited to play and get pumped.”

Elliott and her teammates will also take part in the upcoming state tour-nament. The Green Wave will have their relay squad in the 200 freestyle relay. Elliott will also be in the 200 medley and the 100 fly and Hayley Masi will be in the 100 freestyle. Coach Julio is proud of his team be-cause they compete despite not hav-ing the depth that many teams have. Just competing with the top teams at the state level is a huge accomplish-ment in the eyes of the coach.

“It’s the first time in a long for Long Branch to have a relay team going to states.” Elliott explains. “It’s nice that my teammates and I also quali-fied for some individual events. We are really looking forward to it.”

TOMS RIVER— It was a fierce battle between two wrestling heavyweights going for the Shore Conference Tour-nament championship. Brick Memo-rial prevailed with a narrow 32-29 win over Toms River South for the title. The Mustangs outlasted the top seed with a strong effort that included one pin and two major decisions. Cliff Ruggiero’s pin of Garrett Applegate in the 152 lb. weight class was perhaps the big-gest outcome of the night. Tyler Poling (heavyweight) and Alec Donovan (138 lbs.) recorded the major decisions for the Mustangs.

Brick Memorial held off a rally by Jack-son Memorial to reach the final with a 37-23 victory. The Jaguars shook off an early deficit and took a 23-22 lead briefly after four wins in a row begin-ning with Alec Huxford (126 lbs.) and

ending with Spencer Young (145 lbs.). But the Mustangs proved their mettle and won out for the rest of the match. Rob Ruggiero (152 lbs.) and Tyler Rich-ardson (170 lbs) earned pins in two of the final three bouts to clinch a berth in the finals.

The Indians advanced to the final with a 28-26 win over 4th seeded Howell. The win was not quite the nailbiter that the score would indicate but the Reb-els kept it close. TR South enjoyed a solid lead until a pair of wins by How-ell thanks to Kris Lindemann (126 lbs.) and Ben Esposito (132 lbs.). With the match tightened, the Indians reeled off three straight bouts with Matt Theobold getting it started at 138 lbs. The 2012 state champion B.J. Clagon earned a major decision at 145 lbs. and Garrett Applegate earned the win at 152 lbs.

TOMS RIVER— After finishing in a tie for the Class A South Divi-sion title, the Toms River South wrestling team turned its attention to the Shore Conference Tourna-ment. The Indians were awarded the top seed and with that came a bullseye and the pressure that goes along with it. It also meant a matchup with scrappy 8th seeded Ocean Township in the SCT quar-terfinals last Thursday. The Spar-tans came out strong and took an early six point edge, but Owen McClave (106 lbs.), Kevin Corri-gan (113 lbs.), and Brandon Mur-ray (120 lbs.) won their bouts and combined for 17 bonus points to turn the tide. TR South went on for a 43-25 victory to advance.

“You got to win a couple of those close bouts. In close matches, you have to avoid giving up bonus points and on the opposite side, getting them is a big advantage,” explains head coach, Ron Lay-cock.

Ocean tried to battle back after

the bonus points setback. They rallied to win three straight bouts, but TR South’s state champion wrestler, B.J. Clagon, put a stop to that streak. Clagon, who went 41-0 last year and won the state championship at 138 lbs., earned the pin in just 23 seconds at 145 lbs. Garrett Applegate then sealed the win with in the 160 lb. weight class. The victory earned TR South a meeting with 4th seeded Howell in the SCT semifinals on Saturday.

“I think we’ve got a few guys who can get us some bonus points (in the semifinals/finals) and we have to neutralize the other team’s top wrestlers,” says coach Laycock. “We feel good. We’ve proven that we belong this year and we’ll have everybody back in our lineup to-morrow (Saturday). We had a little flu bug this week, but everybody is fine now.”(Please see our article on last Sat-urday’s SCT wrestling semifinals/final to see how TR South fared)

BRICK – After beating Point Pleas-ant Beach 42-27 Tuesday in the SCT Preliminary Round, the Eagles lost to state power, Brick Memorial, 50-16, in a Pre-Quarter Final match Thursday night at Brick Memorial High School.

Brick Memorial (18-2) is ranked num-ber five in the state, and number two in the shore. Their two losses came against Toms River South (18-2), ranked fourth in the state and first in the shore, and Bergen Catholic (16-1), ranked second in the state. The Mustangs will face Jackson Memorial (13-5), ranked 13th in the state, in a semifinal match on Friday.

It was a daunting task ahead for the Eagles as they took to the mats for their first match. South hung tough, winning three of the first six matches, and only trailed the Mustangs 15-10 at that point.

Junior, Connor Spreen (13-11), won a 6-4 decision at 195, Heavyweight, Tyler Tomanek (7-7), added a major decision win (14-5), and junior, Dom Franciosi (21-4), won a 5-0 decision at the 113-weight class.

Brick Memorial then took seven of the eight remaining matches for the fi-nal margin of victory. Senior, Andrew Blasco (22-2), pinned Tim Santiago at 1:05 in the 152-weight class for the Eagles final points.

The Eagles had won six straight match-es before Thursday’s loss to Brick Me-morial and Tuesday’s win against a

very good Point Pleasant Beach (14-4) team was a tremendous win for South.

Connor Spreen and junior, Taylor Henrickson (4-1), got South out to a fast start with pins in the opening matches. Heavyweight, Trevor Finn (18-5), made it three-straight taking a 4-3 decision and a 15-0 South lead.

Point Beach then won four of the next five matches by pins to take a 24-18 lead after eight bouts. In between, ju-nior, Dom Franciosi (21-4), won a 9-3 decision.

Senior, Jon Cook, pulled the Eagles to within three, with a 3-2 decision over Jake DeLorenzo to set up the match of the day.

Trailing 24-21, South sophomore, Matthew Best (17-6), pinned Point Beach star, Riley Kelly (19-2), at 3:18 to hand the Eagles the lead for good, 27-24.

South went on to win three of the final four bouts for a hard fought 42-27 victory. Freshman, Trent Giglio (8-11), won a 2-0 decision and senior, Mo Jrad (10-9), pinned Pat Waldman at 0:26. Andrew Blasco won by Forfeit.

The Eagles are loaded with under-classmen on this year’s squad. With 10 freshmen, 3 sophomores, and 7 juniors all having wrestled this year, the future looks very promising.

MIDDLE TOWN SOUTH GRAPPLERS FALL IN SHORE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT ACTIONBy Mike Ready

On Friday, January 18, 2013, Junior Jason Bryan of Rumson-Fair Haven Re-gional High School (RFH) threw 52 feet, 9 inches to win the shot put at the Mon-mouth County Indoor Track Champion-ships in Toms River, New Jersey. Bryan had the longest throw of the meet, set a new school record and helped the boys team to a 7th place finish.

“Jason is hav-ing a great win-ter season so far,” said Bob Keogh, one of the RFH coaches for winter track. “He has won two invitational meets and the Mon-mouth County Championships and, in the process, shattered the RFH school indoor shot put record by more than 10 feet.”

At the Colts Neck Invitational the week before, Bryan finished first on a toss of 50 feet. He also won the Merli Invi-tational on December 29, 2012 with a throw of 52 feet 6 inches. Teaming with his brother Jordan, a sophomore at RFH, he won the shot put at the Monmouth County Relays, with a RFH school record of 82 feet, 4 inches.

“It's fun to watch the success of some-one who is so dedicated and disciplined and who works so hard every day to perfect his technique. We anticipate even greater things from Jason as we

enter the cham-pionship part of the winter season,” added Keogh.

At the Janu-ary 18th M o n m o u t h County Cham-pionships, three RFH girls were able to score for their team.

In the 3200 meter race, Junior Jacque-line Gottuso finished in 3rd place with a personal best of 11:27.64. Senior Isa-bella Maita finished in 4th place with a personal best of 11:43.14. Sophomore Nora Ryan tied for 6th place in the high jump with a final height of 4-10, a per-sonal best and RFH school record. On Friday, January 25, 2013, the Boys and Girls RFH winter track teams will be competing at the Shore Conference Championships at the John Bennett Indoor Sports Complex in Toms River. On February 6, 2013, the teams will be competing at the NJSIAA State Section-als at the same venue.

By Jim HintelmannWEST LONG BRANCH ¬ A good reasonfor the success of the Neptune boys’ bas-ketball program over the years has been anexplosive up tempo offense. Overlooked, though, was the fact that the Scarlet Fliersare historically strong on defense and thatwas on display in Friday’s ShoreConference championship game withColts Neck.

Shutting down a potent Colts Neckoffense, the Scarlet Fliers outlasted theCougars, 37-33, before a sellout crowd atMonmouth University. “This has beengreat series with them,” said NeptuneHead Coach Ken O’Donnell. “It wasn’tthe prettiest game, but we were able toforce them out of their zone. We playedgreat defense.”

Neptune’s defense was at its best in thefinal two minutes of the game when itmade three key stops to prevent ColtsNeck from tying the score. The first cameafter Colts Neck had scored five straightpoints on a three-pointer by BrandonFederici and a drive from Lucas Lalima tonarrow the deficit to 33-31.

With two minutes remaining, theCougars got the ball again, but Neptune’sKeith Kirkwood stole the ball and scoredwith 1:48 left to make it 35-31.ColtsNeck’s Tim Vengalis dropped in two foulshots to make it a two-point game again, but Neptune’s Ikie Calderon missed thefirst of a one-and- one to give Colts Neckanother chance, but once again they turnedthe ball over.

Jaheem Woods of Neptune was fouledbut he, too, missed the first of a one-and-one with 30 seconds to go, giving ColtsNeck one more opportunity.

Colts Neck worked the ball down to 10seconds and the ball was passed to HunterWysocki in the paint, but good defense byKirkwood resulted in a miss with FuguanMcDonald grabbing the rebound. “Wewere going to go for either a three or getthe ball to Hunter in the box,” said ColtsNeck Head Coach Lou Piccola. “I thought

that he gotfouled but itwasn’t called. This was avery physical game, but both teams lefteverything on the floor.”

McDonald was fouled with five secondsleft and made both to clinch the win. “I’ma good foul shooter,” said McDonald. “Iwas confident that I would make them. Ijust wanted to help my teammates. I feltlike I was in the gym by myself.”

For Calderon, the championship washis second of the year. He was a key play-er for Neptune’s NJSIAA Central JerseyGroup III champion football team lastfall. “I want to make it three rings now,”said Calderon, in looking ahead to thestate tournament.

The first half saw both teams finding alid on the basket with Neptune making on6 of 31 from the floor while Colts Neckwas 4 for 25. Overall Neptune shot 25percent from the floor while Colts Neck

hit 22.7 percent. Both teams had one longscoring streak in the first half. Colts Neckscored nine straight points, five by SeanO’Reilly to open up a 9-2 lead in the firstperiod.

Colts Neck moved out to an 11-5 advan-tage early in the second quarter onWysocki’s layup, but Neptune answeredwith 10 in a row capped by three-pointersfrom Kirkwood and Calderon. That madeit 15-11. Neptune took the lead for goodin the third quarter, 23-20, on a trey byCalderon which started a 7-1 run by theFliers.

The title was a 22nd Shore Conferencerecord win for the Scarlet Fliers who lastwon the team title in 2008. It was also thefourth for O’Donnell in his 23 years asHead Coach for boys’ basketball.

TINTON FALLS – Senior forward, Jimmy Walsh, scored 19 points, including 12 in the second half, guiding fourth ranked Manasquan (14-2,11-1) to a 68-46 victory over Monmouth Regional, Thurs-day night in Tinton Falls.

Walsh, the states leading rebounder with a 16.9 per game average, grabbed a game-high 19 boards, while dominating the paint on this special night.

With two seconds remaining in the half, and Manasquan up by six points, Walsh corralled a missed shot under the boards, and laid it in for his historic 1000th point. The game stopped while his appreciative teammates mobbed him at midcourt, and the Warrior faithful stood and cheered in the overflowing bleachers.

“It feels great, I was relieved, I had a number of family members in the stands and I wanted to get it for them. I needed six points coming in, and I saw it as just another six points. 1000 points is a

great milestone, but really, it’s just another point.” Walsh said.

In anticipation of Walsh’s big shot, the Warriors might have been a little tight in the first half. “We were sloppy with no consistent pace in the first half. In the second half, we found our game, and it paid off, we went on a couple nice runs,” Walsh recounted.

Head coach, Drew Bilodeau, agreed, “Monmouth Regional is scrappy, tough and athletic. The have very quick guards that play well together. They did a good job slowing us down in the first half when we were a little sluggish. After halftime we got it going a little bit, made some shots, and started playing our game.”

Senior guard, JR Hobbie, added a game high 20 points, including four first half three’s. Hobbie, who leads the shore in scoring with a 22.5 per game average, also dished out six assists.

Junior guards, Jack Fay (6) and Tommy Toole (7), handed out 13 assists between them. Toole added eight points and seven rebounds, while Fay grabbed six boards. Fay is fourth in the Shore in assists, with a 5.5 per game average, while Toole checks in at number ten in the Shore, with 4.7 as-sists per game.

Freshman forward, Ryan Jensen, looks like the ‘real deal’ as he adds energy and toughness to this veteran team. Jensen pumped in 11 points, nine in the second half, and pulled down eight boards.

Hobbie hit the 1000-point milestone earlier in the year and I asked Coach Bilodeau how it felt to have two players hit the 1000-point career mark in the same season. “It feels special, it’s great for them, they’re close friends and really hard work-ers. They’ve played in summer leagues together for a long time. It’s funny, Hobbie hit his 1000th point with a three pointer, while Walsh got his on a rebound and a put-back. God has a sense of humor.”

Hobbie, known for his three-point shooting, has committed to play for Brown University next fall, while Walsh, known for his rebounding and inside the paint play, has committed to Stonehill College.

Follow me on twitter @getmreadyWALL-- Following a 7-1 win over Freehold Boro on Janu-ary 30, the Wall Township High School ice hockey team finds itself one more victory away from earning a Shore Conference B South Champi-onship. They’ll look to secure that victory on February 6 when they meet Manasquan, which holds a 3-6 division re-cord.

After outscoring their last two division opponents by a total of 10 goals, thanks to back-to-back seven goal efforts and the strong goaltending by starter Troy Klahre, the Scarlet Knights will carry a lot of momentum into their division finale. Predictably, Wall’s offensive onslaught of the last two games has been led by sophomore center, Jeff Morgan, who potted five of his team leading 31 goals in the last two games, including a hat trick against Freehold Boro, and also added to his team lead in assists (32) by

setting up new teammate JT Tarantino, formerly of CBA, on two of the four goals he’s scored since joining the Knights.

Senior, Luke Stohrer, who’s tied with senior defenseman, Tom Panico, for second on the team in assists with 17, has also gone on something of a scoring binge, more than doubling his season goals total, now at five, with three scores in the last two games. Junior, Alex Wuestneck, third on the team in goals scored with 13 (trailing Morgan and Panico [14]), has also taken a different route for accumulat-ing points recently by nearly doubling his season total in assists by accumulating five of his 11 in the last two games.

A Wall victory over Manasquan would give the Knights their eighth divisional championship under coach, Mike Dianora.

RUMSON— Rumson-Fair Haven ice hockey earned their 10th win of the season in style with an 8-1 victory over Toms River North (6-9-1) last Tuesday. Charlie Gravina scored a game-high four goals and senior forward, Brian Robinson, added a pair and an as-sist. Leading scorer Hunter Rotchford notched an assist to up his point total to 22 on the season. The defense locked down the Mariners who did not score until late in the third period after RFH held an 8-0 lead. Junior, Dominic Pad-ula, made seven saves in goal.

On Friday, the Bulldogs hit the ice against Montgomery (5-14-1) in a non-conference contest. Montgomery brought their “A” game for this meet-ing and surprised RFH by holding a 2-1 lead with under 10 minutes remaining

in the third period. But Hunter Rotch-ford produced a timely goal to tie it up and then assisted on a goal by forward, Brendan Ban, with just over one minute left to lift the Bulldogs to a 3-2 win. Ban also added an assist and Brian Rob-inson tallied a pair of helpers. Senior defenseman, Adam Sheridan, chipped in with the other goal for RFH. Padula recorded 23 saves between the pipes to keep Montgomery in check.

The victories helped the Bulldogs im-prove to 12-4-1 overall on the season. They are undefeated with a 5-0-1 mark in their last six games. RFH is set to face St. Rose this Friday and host A.L John-son on Sunday at the Red Bank Armory at 8:15pm.

The Shore Regional boys’ basketball team is having a very successful sea-son posting a 15 win and only 2 loss record and are currently ranked #4 in the Shore Conference. The Blue Devil's have won six games in a row and ten of their last 11, with their last loss coming at the hands of Manasquan (ranked # 3 in the Shore Conference). Shore will get a chance at revenge when the two teams face off at Manasquan this week with the "A" Central division title on the line. Head coach, Dave Emory, has his team ready for the rematch and said, "This is the biggest week of the season and the kids are looking forward to the challenge".

Some of Shore's latest wins have been over Raritan (3-13) by the score of 66 to 50. The Blue Devil's started out slow and trailed by four at the end of the first quarter before taking control of the game late in the second quarter and in the third quarter. Ben Hess led the Blue Devil's in scoring with 20 points and he also grabbed 14 rebounds. Dan Pillari added 15 points, while Kevin Blood-

good added 11 points.

In an earlier win over Monmouth Re-gional (6-12), the Blue Devil's trailed once again throughout the game and were trailing by one point with 2:05 left in the game when Connor Rogers hit a key three pointer putting the Blue Devil's ahead for good. Rogers scored all 7 of his points in the fourth quarter. Shore was led in scoring in the game by Dan Pillari's 19 points, while Jack Byrne added 14 points.

With games this week against Manasquan and Holmdel The Blue Devil's can lock up a strong seed in the state tournament as they have put them-selves in great position to challenge for a Shore Conference Tournament cham-pionship and a state tournament title. Coach Emory said, "We are not going to surprise anyone anymore as everyone knows we are a quality basketball team. We as a coaching staff are very proud of what these kids have accomplished and we are looking forward for this special season to continue".

POINT PLEASANT-- The Point Pleasant Boro girls’ basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with wins over Pinelands Regional 61-29 and Atlantic City 80-55 on February 1 and 2. The Atlantic City win was the 90th for the Panthers’ senior class of Kelly Hughes, Lauren Hughes, Kerry Malleck and Jess Macchi.

Kelly Hughes led the Panthers’ domina-tion against Pinelands, posting more points on her own (34) than the Wild-cats did as a team to go along with seven rebounds and ten steals. The game’s result wasn’t in doubt for long, with Point Boro outscoring Pinelands 22-2 in the first quarter and never look-ing back. Kelly Hughes led the way again the following day in Atlantic City with a team-high 30, while senior Kerry Malleck poured in a career-high 25 in the win.The Boston College-bound Kelly Hughes’ scoring prowess has been the biggest subplot of the season for the 19-1 Panthers. The forward surpassed Christie Rampone for the school scoring record in a 29 point effort over Jackson

Liberty on January 22 and now has her sights set on the all-time Shore Con-ference mark of 2,534 held by former Shore Regional star, Patty Delehanty. She also averages 10.1 rebounds per game.

Despite Hughes’ individual pursuit of history, the primary focus remains on team success. “Kelly’s pursuit of the Shore Conference record is one thing, but we have unfinished business in Group II,” said Point Boro coach, Da-vid Drew, “and I know she wants that championship more than anything else.”

While Kelly Hughes is the team’s most prolific scorer, the Panthers have the luxury of two other seniors who com-monly post double-digit scoring totals. Through February 1, Kelly’s sister Lau-ren was averaging a shade over 11 points per game while Malleck scored an average of 10.8 a game. Macchi is second to Kelly Hughes in rebounds per game with 8.9 and leads the team in blocks with 32 as of February 1.

By Eric BraunLONG BRANCH- Coming off a frustrating 5-5 season in2011, the Green Wave from Long Branch High Schoolhave gotten back to their tradition of ground and pound. The Wave has rushed out to a 2-0 record with wins overManasquan and Monmouth, relying mostly on the legs ofJosil Jackson and the arm of Avery Griffin.

Long Branch took a hit during their final pre-seasongame when senior tailback Dwight Clark went down witha broken left ankle. Clark is expected back by midseasonbut Coach Dan George needs to keep his team focused andmoving forward to get back to Class B North dominanceand be eligible for the NJSIAA tournament. CoachGeorge also lost senior tight- end and linebacker Dominic Mincieli when he suffered a knee injury in the spring, butMincieli should be back in the first couple weeks of the

season.Minus the injuries, the Green Wave is in prime posi-

tion to challenge Neptune, Wall and Ocean in the ShoreConference B North division. Top to bottom this is thetoughest division in the Shore Conference. Coach Georgewill look to get additional contributions from juniorShabazz Shuler and seniors Curtis Gunther and TreySmith at wide outs. On defense, the Wave will look forChris Pappayluo and senior safeties Corey Morris andBrett Roach to shutdown opposing offenses.

By Brian DanemanThe Howell Rebels might have known they were in

for a rough night at the swamp when they were calledfor a delay of game penalty before the game even start-ed. The penalty was rightfully called because theRebels did not enter the field until well after 7pm leav-ing the home team to wait on the sidelines.

The game was riddled with penalties on both sides ofthe ball. Nineteen penalties were called to be exact andfive were on just the first series. But otherwise, it wasa well-played game. Howell’s passing efforts actuallylooked quite sharp on their first two possessions withsix completions and four first downs. On their thirdpossession, the relentless Eagle defensive line sackedRebel quarterback Connor McGlynn at the Rebels ownthree- yard line. In doing so, they knocked him out ofthe game and into an awaiting ambulance with a pos-sible neck or shoulder injury.

From this point late in the first quarter MiddletownSouth began to soar behind the power running of JakeRipnick scoring on three subsequent drives. Ripnickran for 157 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. The Eagles took advantage of the loss of the Howellquarterback and pressured his substitute Aaron Trimblefor the rest of the night leading to five sacks and twointerceptions; one by junior Andrew Wisialko for sixyards and one later in the second half by speedsterElijah Smith for a 60- yard touchdown return. TheSouth defense was tenacious all night and gave theoffense great field position on every series.

The offense led by Ripnick and quarterback Kyle

Bray moved the ball well throughout the game relyingheavy on the run but also sprinkling in a few passesto shake things up. Bray’s throws were accurate espe-cially the 25- yard bullet he threw to junior wide outTaylor Hendrickson late in the second quarter for thethird score of the game. The two connected on four

passes for the entire game. The South offensive anddefensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage foralmost the entire game and helped to earn the lopsidedvictory.

The Rebels did manage to score a touchdown late inthe fourth quarter on a 24- yard throw from Trimble to

BRICK TOWNSHIP— Things are shap-ing up for a winner-take-all showdown on the ice when two crosstown rivals meet again. Brick Township and Brick Memorial are headed for a battle on February 10th that will decide the Class A South Division title. The Green Dragons are on a roll as of late. They have not lost a game in 2013, a streak that began with a 6-1 victory over Brick Memorial. Now they will gear up for what amounts to a division champion-

ship game when they square off with the Mustangs on Sunday.

The Dragons skated out last week to a challenge against Point Boro (11-3-2). The game went wild in the second pe-riod after a scoreless first. Both teams put up three goals and exchanged leads. The outcome would end up be-ing a 4-4 tie. Brick’s Ryan Price had a goal and two assists and David Kearns had two assists. Tyler Iannarone, Ni-

kita Klinisove, and Brian Lange each scored for the Dragons. Point Boro junior forward, Steven Kovaleski, had four goals to lead his squad.

On Tuesday, Brick traveled up to the Red Bank Armory and defeated Red Bank Catholic by a score of 4-3. Four different players scored the Dragons including Price, Iannarone, Nicholes Auriemma, and Ryan Mooney. Brick finished the week with a 7-2 rout of

Jackson Memorial. Mooney scored a pair of goals while Price and Iann-arone each had a goal and two as-sists. Jake Lampiasi made 19 saves in net.

Brick will play two roads games this week. They will be at St. John Vianney on Tuesday and at Montville on Satur-day. The showdown with Brick Memo-rial looms for Sunday evening.

RED BANK - Red Bank Catholic started fast and finished the same way Thursday in scoring an impressive 49-34 win over Rumson-Fair Haven Regional and clinching its first A Central Division title since 2007.

In winning, the Caseys (16-1) had to overcome a stunning third quarter scor-

ing drought in which it managed only one point, but they finally rediscovered their shooting touch in the final quarter by scor-ing the final 15 points of the game.

"We have had trouble all year coming out in the third quarter," said RBC coach, Joe Montano, "but Rumson is a tough team

with skilled players. Fortunately, the team came together and regrouped."

Taking advantage of RBC's poor shooting, Rumson, trailing 28-14 late in the first half, slowly narrowed the deficit. They finally tied up the game at 31 on a jumper by Jess Harvey with seven minutes left. "We didn't

make many changes in the second half," said Rumson coach, George Sourlis. "We played a little better defense and the kids didn't quit."

Alex Alfano dropped in two foul shots for RBC but Harvey tied it again with a drive. Caroline Corcoran drilled a three to put RBC up 37-34, but Rumson's Grace Stant answered with a three of her own to tie it at 37.That, however, was to be Rumson's final points of the game as RBC ran off the last 15 points of the contest beginning with a three-pointer by Grace Fallon. Corcoran had five points in this streak, "We spent a lot of energy coming back and might have been a little tired," said Sourlis, "but they came back and made some big shots down the stretch. That is why they are the No.1 team in the Shore, but I'm proud of the way my team rallied."

"I'm happy with the way my kids came back (after Rumson tied the score)," said Mon-tano. "They showed a lot of composure and toughness These girls have been great and care for each other all the time. Winning this division is very satisfying because of the caliber of the teams in the division,""It feels amazing because this is the tough-est conference in the state, "said Corcoran. “We played our hearts out in every game. This game went back and forth until we came out on top."
