After the ICGe meetin~ DOU~ aasi£ned me to Work un~er Paul in the gathering of performance statistics . Accordin~lY I have begun some proKra m changes that people 8hoUl~ know about although they are still pr eliminary -see (LJOU HNAL , 12793.1 and (lJOURNAL. 12800,1- I have also taken a look at some information gathering commands that were al r eadY in the system. The purpose of t his note is to report on the status of all this.

1. CURRENT PLANS. ) There is a new command in NLS that is intended for general use and ie

called~ ~{o to} f{requency statistics}

This command curren~lY has two sUbmodes. RESET and DISPLAY. The first one re_initializes a ma trix in~o Which we store the command frequency cou~ters. The second one diSPlays the counters in a very rough form that won 't be meaningful to you for a While (until we decide on the most appropriate waY to for mat this as a table for gene ral use). The next step, before more detailed de!i~n is attempted, is for Pau l an d me to begin usin g t his mechanism in some test sitUations and define the most Profitable lessons we could draw from it . We'll welcome your i deas an that.

II. NLS PE RFORMANC E MEASURES : AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE. While dig~inK in the da rk recesses of NCTRL lIve f ound an obscure command called

e{xecuteJ W{SI Measurements} The si~n1ficance of the ancient symbo l "WSI" has apparently been lost, but BOme old~timers remember an early tradition about this command, and it .oes liKe this:

"Back in the Old daYS ( ••• ) the time stamp on each character wa9 r eturned along with the character. NoW, with big characters, the time stamP i3 inclUded in the "character" only if a monitor OPtion is inv~ked. (Charles Irby, I'm tOld , knows about this OPtion) APParently, this option is not ~urned on now, BO the command described ( ••• l Cannot do its thing. "

The command (ew) causeS NLS to display the average time (tor t he whole ) seSsion) required before a character typed by the user is given to the

NtS program. A OA returns t o the previous state.

DVN. <MJOURNAL>13110.NLS;1 2

In addition to the above , the real and jOb times r equired t o execute various type s of NLS commands can be cOllected and saved on a file,

) Which must later be pr ocesse~ bY ~ use r orogram t o interpret and format the results. This is invoked bY:

)

)

O{o to) U{s~ Measurements) Begin is then the defaUlt, e{nd) stops t he measurements an~ writes the file whose name WaS deClared at Be~in time. A sampling interval 1n minutes is also requested. I intend to spend some tine trying these programs (although the¥ do not quite dO what Paul and I need) with a view of possibly merging them with the new st.tistics . As an old Journal article puts it,

"each of these meaSu rement tech niq ue s was added to NLS ~ t diffe~' ent times a nd 1n response to differen t questions we were aSking about system actiVity. No a tte~pt wa s made to integrate neW measurement facilitie s wi th extant one s, eo itl s a mot ley lot."

III. STATUS 0. IMPLE MENTATION . The current experimental system (rel-nls) has both the I'goto freoUency" command - with a display problem te mporarilY preventin g output fro m t hiB version- and t he 'I gato Use Me asurements" commands Where two earli e r bugs haVe now oeen fixed . It generates a file that we ' ve successfully printed out.

It 1s look inA,: as if the N!iC p roject Is g oing to become a much heavier user o~ ~he Ne twork tLnd that, since my concerns are with documentation, [ wilt be relying on the NIC much more.

Additionally, my interests Include the psychology o~ COID p ut e r use (man-machine interfacing ), which the ARC is rather (I g ather) enthuSiastIcalLy studyin~.

Two things come of~ of these £acts .

Tbe second is that 1 would like to he able to r'complain tl (or rather, suggest operatlonal improvements} ~requently, but paln"lessly (painless to you, that is). You all are unusually receptive t10 use'r-feedback, but recurrent "complaInts" are no-doubt hard to dea~ wIth.

Dick ... In response to your note on des i g n review procedur es ( 13055,):

It's my opinion that the desl a D process requires the foltow l nA Ingred l e n's :

2 ) at the end o~ eac h stage there should he a review by a comm J tt ee se t up tOI" that p ur pose;

3 ) only a£ t ~r al l ~our stages reviewed and co~pteted s houl d proceed .

r'm Bure you 'll r eco g nize that the implemen t ation process also requIres reviews, because Ilot everythin g about the deB l ~n can be anticipated In the design p r ocess . In this note, however, the question at how to handle ~he ~evlew of the Implementatlon p rocess I s not covered . On ly that o~ the deslg n process.

The :four s1.ag es o~ the des i g n are ~hese:
