What kind of world do we want for ourselves?And for our kids?Under the Howard Government, Australia has become a less fair place to live. And dangerous climate change is now just around the corner.In recent times, I have been proudly standing side by side with African Australians and speaking out against the government’s appalling statements. We must keep the door to Africa open and share this country with our families and newcomers. In Parliament, only The Greens will push for:

A $30 weekly increase in the pension;Money to go to public schools and health care instead of to the private sector;Getting rid of the harsh Centrelink activity tests, work requirements and assessments;NO WAR IN IRAQ;Ripping up WorkChoices and individual workplace agreements; andTaking URGENT action on climate change by having a large-scale ‘renewable energy’ public works program that will create jobs. We only have 10 years to get it right on climate change, and none of the major parties have any short-term targets to cut greenhouse gas pollution.

The Greens are effective, and we stand on issues of principle. We speak out on the issues that matter – like David Hicks, ‘welfare to work’ laws and the war in Iraq. Help me create a future that our children and grandchildren will be proud of. Please call me on 9328 5784 if you would like to know more.

Labor has no short-term targets for cutting greenhouse gas

pollution: their targets are over 40 years away, by which time it

will be too late. The Liberals have no targets at all. The Greens have

a plan to cut greenhouse gas pollution by 30% by 2020,

and 80% by 2050.

What kind of world do we want for ourselves?And for future generations?Under the Howard Government, Australia has become a less fair place to live. And dangerous climate change is now just around the corner.

As a senior industrial relations lawyer, I’ve seen workers forced to give up entitlements we took for granted only 10 years ago. I have stood up for the rights of clothing workers in particular, taking many companies to court for underpaying their outworkers as little as $5 an hour.

In Parliament, only The Greens will push for:

A $30 weekly increase in the pension;

Money to go to public schools and health care instead of to the private sector;

Getting rid of the harsh Centrelink activity tests, work requirements and assessments;

Ripping up WorkChoices and individual workplace agreements; and

What kind of world do we want for ourselves?And for our kids?Under the Howard Government, Australia has become a less fair place to live. And dangerous climate change is now just around the corner.

As Liberal and Labor hand out tax cuts for the already well-off, and agree on private schools and Medicare, The Greens believe it is time to take a stand.

In Parliament, only The Greens will push for:

A $30 weekly increase in the pension;

I stand for many traditional labour values as well as new green ideas. And I will keep opposing racism, and pushing for a fair go for all Australians.

Voting 1 Green is a safe vote against Howard: your preferences go to Labor. So this election, let’s change the government and send Kevin Rudd a strong message.

Extreme market volatility has continued despite decisive action locally and globally to stabilise the impact of the credit crunch on financial markets.

Panic selling and price instability has made the last few months extremely difficult for investors.

Domestically, the RBA has taken dramatic steps to support the Australian economy by cutting official interest rates by 3% over the last four months, much of which has been passed on to homeowners.

While it is disconcerting to experience the rollercoaster ups and downs of volatile markets, it’s important to keep the performance of your pension in context. The four years ending 30 June 2007 delivered

bumper performance to Australian investors and super funds — so much so, that we are now used to high double-digit returns. Faced with the shock of negative performance, it’s natural to be disappointed.

The key for sound investing is to understand that negative years are a completely normal part of the investment cycle, even if the current performance is worse than we have been used to in recent years.

Remember, investing your super is a constant trade-off between risk and return. It’s important not to lose perspective and make knee-jerk decisions about your long-term finances, even in retirement.

Visit www.transpension.com.au to read more about volatile markets and the investment cycle.

Negative returns mean that pension accounts invested in our Balanced or Equity Plus investment options have decreased in value this year, instead of growing.

This will have implications on your regular pension payments, because a lower total balance means that your minimum payment limit (and maximum payment limit if you have one) will change.

These limits change regularly because you are drawing down on your pension capital by taking regular payments. The change in your pension payment limit may, however, be more noticeable now than it has been previously and the new limits will mean that your pension payments will be smaller than they would be if your investment options had recorded a positive return.

The personal information that TransPension collects is used to administer and correspond with you in relation to your super account, process your application and request, pay your benefits under TransPension and conduct research about how to improve our services and products.

We may arrange to provide other services to you. These services may include information on other products. TransPension may arrange for a financial planner to contact you to offer to assist you with your financial planning in relation to your superannuation.

We may arrange for a service provider or the Australian Tax Office (ATO) to cross-match your personal details with other superannuation funds to help locate any other superannuation accounts in your name. If you choose not to give us your personal information, or provide us with incomplete or inaccurate personal information, we may not be able to provide you with all the benefits of TransPension and may not be able to process your claim or pay any benefits.

Unless required or authorised by law, we will only provide your personal information to authorised advisers, service providers, such as the insurer or the Fund’s administrator, or government agencies that use the information to administer your account and provide services to you or to the Trustee relating to your TransPension account.

You are able to gain access to your personal information or get a copy of the Fund’s Privacy Policy by asking for it. If you would like to request access to the personal information we hold about you, or want further information on how we handle personal information, please contact the Trustee (TWU Nominees Pty Ltd) using the contact details below.

If salary sacrifice is so good, why doesn’t everyone do it?• For a start, not all employers offer salary sacrifice to

their employees. You should ask your pay office whether salary sacrifice is available and for more details.

• Also, the tax treatment of before-tax and after-tax contributions is different so, in some cases, making before-tax contributions may not suit your investment or taxation strategy. You should seek professional advice.

• The amount and effective rate of super contributions that your employer must make on your behalf (including the required SG amount) may fall after a salary sacrifice unless your employer agrees (through your employment contract), or because the award requires, that contributions are to be made at the pre-salary sacrifice amount. This reduction may occur because the amount of your pay on which super contributions are calculated falls.

So, it is important to confirm that your employer will continue to make super contributions for you based on your pre-salary sacrifice earnings.

• Other benefits that are linked to the amount of your salary (such as annual and long-service leave entitlements) may also be reduced as a result of a salary sacrifice arrangement.

• You should also note that law requires that any contributions you make, whether before-tax or after-tax personal contributions, are preserved, meaning that you cannot generally take these contributions as cash until you reach your preservation age (currently age 55) and permanently retire.

Is there a limit on how much I can salary sacrifice?Yes. The Government imposes a number of restrictions on superannuation contributions. The Government has imposed an annual cap of $50,000 on ‘concessional’ contributions. These include:

• contributions paid by an employer on your behalf;

• salary sacrifice contributions (treated as employer contributions); and

• contributions you make when you are self-employed (or substantially self-employed), for which you have claimed a tax deduction.

Any concessional contributions over the $50,000 cap will be taxed at the highest marginal rate plus Medicare levy. Any amount in excess of the cap will also count towards the separate cap on non-concessional contributions. A transitional concessional cap of $100,000 applies to members aged 50 and older until 30 June 2012.

Note that there may be other limits on how much of your pay can be salary sacrificed (eg award minimum pay rates).

Interested? Need a form? As each employer is different, you will need to discuss salary sacrificing with your pay office. If you need it, there is a Salary Sacrifice Arrangement Agreement available from Transuper to help you come to an arrangement with your employer. Visit www.transuper.com.au or contact the Customer Service Team on 1800 808 799.

Need some help?Our Client Relations Team can help you with questions and filling out forms. Find your nearest one by calling 1800 808 799.

What’s the next step?The tax implications of making salary sacrifice contributions can be quite significant so we recommend you seek professional advice.

You can access straightforward professional advice about salary sacrificing into super from Money Solutions on a flat fee-for-service basis. Money Solutions offer phone-based advice so you don’t have to make an appointment. Call us on 1800 808 799 and we’ll put you through to your own Money Coach.

For a comfortable retirement, the experts say that you’ll probably need around 60% to 70% of your annual working income.While the Superannuation Guarantee contributions (9%) your employer must make for you are a good start, they may not be enough. You can improve your chances for a comfortable retirement by topping up your super account with your own money – called ‘personal contributions’.

What are my options for making personal contributions?After-tax contributions (Non-concessional contributions)All Transuper members can make contributions from after-tax salary as either a regular deduction from your net pay, as a direct debit from your bank account, by cheque or Bpay®.

Before-tax (salary sacrifice) contributions (Concessional contributions)If your employer agrees, you may be able to make contributions from your before-tax salary. This is also known as making salary sacrifice contributions. Salary sacrifice contributions must be pre-arranged through your pay office as a deduction from your gross (before-tax) pay.

You should contact your pay office to confirm whether salary sacrifice is available and for further details.

Salary sacrifice contributions can increase your take-home pay!The following example assumes an annual income of $48,000 based on 2007/2008 tax rates. Let’s say you are already contributing $200 a month to Transuper from your after-tax pay and you want to know what would happen if you switch to before-tax contributions.

Let’s assume your gross monthly pay is $4,000 and your marginal tax rate is 31.5% (including 1.5% Medicare levy).

As the following example shows, by switching from after-tax to before-tax contributions, you can increase your monthly take-home pay by $63.

How does take-home pay change?

Salary sacrifice can be a tax-effective way of investing more money in your super.What are the key tax differences?

15% super tax versus up to 46.5% income tax!Salary sacrificing means you forego part of your salary in exchange for your employer making additional super contributions on your behalf.

You pay no income tax on these contributions because they are deducted from your gross pay. But you do pay contributions tax of 15% (deducted from your Transuper account).

For most people, 15% contributions tax is a more generous alternative than income tax, which is usually somewhere between 31.5% and 46.5% (including the Medicare levy). Note that you may also need to take into account the tax payable (if any) when you withdraw your super.

Why we need your Tax File Number (TFN)Under the Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Act 1993, your superannuation fund is authorised to collect your TFN, which will only be used for lawful purposes.

These purposes may change in the future as a result of legislative change. The trustee of your superannuation fund may disclose your TFN to another superannuation provider, when your benefits are being transferred, unless you request the trustee of your superannuation fund in writing that your TFN not be disclosed to any other superannuation provider.

It is not an offence not to quote your TFN. However giving your TFN to your superannuation fund will have the following advantages (which may not otherwise apply):

• your superannuation fund will be able to accept all types of contributions to your account/s;

• the tax on contributions to your superannuation account/s will not increase;

• other than the tax that may ordinarily apply, no additional tax will be deducted when you start drawing down your superannuation benefits; and

• it will make it much easier to trace different superannuation accounts in your name so that you receive all your superannuation benefits when you retire.Calculate the difference online!

The Government has a calculator online that can show you the difference at retirement if you make voluntary personal contributions to your super account. Visit www.fido.gov.au and click on ‘Calculators’.

• You pay no income tax on the contribution because it comes out of your gross pay.

• Tax is payable on the contributions to Transuper (deducted from your Transuper account) at a rate of 15%.

• Between ages 55 and 60, concessional contribution withdrawals over $145,000 are taxed at 15% plus Medicare levy. Concessional contribution withdrawals under $145,000 are not taxed.

• Once you are aged 60 and over, no tax is payable on withdrawal.
