WELCOME

The motorcycle presents you a challenge to master the machine, a challenge to adventure. You ridethrough the wind, linked to the road by a vehicle that responds to your commands as no other does.Unlike an automobile, there is no metal cage around you. Like an airplane, a pre-ride inspection andregular maintenance are essential to your safety. Your reward is freedom.

To meet the challenges safely, and to enjoy the adventure fully, you should become thoroughly familiarwith this owner's manual BEFORE YOU RIDE THE MOTORCYCLE.

As you read this manual, you will find information that is preceded by a symbol. This information is intended to help you avoid damage to your motorcycle, other property, or theenvironment.

When service is required, remember that your Honda dealer knows your motorcycle best. If you havethe required mechanical “know-how” and tools, your dealer can supply you with an official HondaService Manual to help you perform many maintenance and repair tasks.

Pleasant riding, and thank you for choosing a Honda!

MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION Your motorcycle can provide many years ofservice and pleasure - if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you can meeton the road.

There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find manyhelpful recommendations throughout thismanual. Following are a few that we considermost important.

Always Wear a HelmetIt’s a proven fact: Helmets significantly reducethe number and severity of head injuries. Soalways wear an approved motorcycle helmetand make sure your passenger does thesame. We also recommend that you wear eyeprotection, sturdy boots, gloves and otherprotective gear (page 2).

Make Yourself Easy to SeeSome drivers do not see motorcycles becausethey are not looking for them. To makeyourself more visible, wear bright reflectiveclothing, position yourself so other drivers cansee you, signal before turning or changinglanes, and use your horn when it will helpothers notice you.

Ride Within Your LimitsPushing the limits is another major cause ofmotorcycle accidents. Never ride beyond yourpersonal abilities or faster than conditionswarrant. Remember that alcohol, drugs, fatigue and inattention can significantly reduceyour ability to make good judgements and ridesafety.

Page 16: Cbf 600 owners manual

2

Keep Your Bike in Safe ConditionFor safe riding, it’s important to inspect yourmotorcycle before every ride and perform allrecommended maintenance. Never exceedload limits, and only use accessories that havebeen approved by Honda for this motorcycle.See page 4 for more details.

Don’t drink and rideAlcohol and riding don’t mix. Even one drinkcan reduce your ability to respond to changingconditions, and your reaction time gets worsewith every additional drink. So don’t drink andride, and don’t let your friends drink and rideeither.

PROTECTIVE APPARELFor your safety, we strongly recommend thatyou always wear an approved motorcyclehelmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, longpants and a long-sleeved shirt or jacketwhenever you ride. Although completeprotection is not possible, wearing proper gearcan reduce the chance of injury when you ride.Following are suggestions to help you chooseproper gear.

n WARNINGNot wearing a helmet increases the chanceof serious injury or death in a crash.

Be sure you and your passenger alwayswear a helmet, eye protection and otherprotective apparel when you ride.

Page 17: Cbf 600 owners manual

3

Helmets and Eye ProtectionYour helmet is your most important piece ofriding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould fit your head comfortably and securely.A bright-colored helmet can make you morenoticeable in traffic, as can reflective strips.

An open-face helmet offers some protectionbut a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protect youreyes and help your vision.

Additional Riding GearIn addition to a helmet and eye protection,we also recommend:• Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to help

protect your feet and ankles.• Leather gloves to keep your hands warm

and help prevent blisters, cuts, burns andbruises.

• A motorcycle riding suit or jacket for comfortas well as protection.Brightcolored and reflective clothing canhelp make you more noticeable in traffic.Be sure to avoid loose clothes that couldget caught on any part of your motorcycle.

LOAD LIMITS AND GUIDELINESYour motorcycle has been designed to carryyou and one passenger. When you carry apassenger, you may feel some differenceduring acceleration and braking. But so long asyou keep your motorcycle well serviced, withgood tyres and brakes, you can safely carryloads within the given limits and guidelines.

However, exceeding the weight limit or carryingan unbalanced load can seriously affect yourmotorcycle's handling, braking and stability.Non-Honda accessories, impropermodifications, and poor maintenance can alsoreduce your safety margin.

The following pages give more specificinformation on loading, accessories andmodifications.

LoadingHow much weight you put on your motorcycle, and how you load it, are important to yoursafety. Anytime you ride with a passenger orcargo you should be aware of the followinginformation.

n WARNINGOverloading or improper loading can causea crash and you can be seriously hurt orkilled.

Follow all load limits and other loadingguidelines in this manual.

Page 19: Cbf 600 owners manual

5

Load LimitsFollowing are the load limits for yourmotorcycle:Maximum weight capacity:180 kg (397 lbs)

Includes the weight of the rider, passenger, allcargo and all accessories.Maximum cargo weight:14 kg (21lbs)The weight of added accessories will reducethe maximum cargo weight you can carry.

Loading GuidelinesYour motorcycle is primarily intended fortransporting you and a passenger. You maywish to secure a jacket or other small items tothe seat when you are not riding with apassenger.

If you wish to carry more cargo, check with yourHonda dealer for advice, and be sure to readthe information regarding accessories on page6.

Improperly loading your motorcycle can affectits stability and handling. Even if yourmotorcycle is properly loaded, you should rideat reduced speeds and never exceed 130 km/h(80 mph) when carrying cargo.

Follow these guidelines whenever you carry apassenger or cargo:• Check that both tyres are properly inflated.• If you change your normal load, you may

need to adjust the rear suspension (page22).

• To prevent loose items from creating ahazard, make sure that all cargo is securelytied down before you ride away.

• Place cargo weight as close to the center ofthe motorcycle as possible.

• Balance cargo weight evenly on both sides.

Accessories and ModificationsModifying your motorcycle or using non-Hondaaccessories can make your motorcycle unsafe. Before you consider making any modificationsor adding an accessory, be sure to read thefollowing information.

AccessoriesWe strongly recommend that you use onlygenuine Honda accessories that have beenspecifically designed and tested for yourmotorcycle. Because Honda cannot test allother accessories, you must be personallyresponsible for proper selection, installationand use of non-Honda accessories. Check withyour dealer for assistance and always followthese guidelines:

• Make sure the accessory does not obscureany lights, reduce ground clearance andbanking angle, limit suspension travel orsteering travel, alter your riding position orinterfere with operating any controls.

• Be sure electrical equipment does not exceedthe motorcycle's electrical system capacity(page 135). A blown fuse can cause a loss oflights or engine power.

n WARNINGImproper accessories or modifications cancause a crash in which you can be seriouslyhurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this owner’smanual regarding accessories andmodifications.

Page 21: Cbf 600 owners manual

BRAKESBoth the front and rear brakes are hydraulicdisc types. As the brake pads wear, the brake fluid leveldrops. There are no adjustments to perform, but fluidlevel and pad wear must be inspectedperiodically. The system must be inspectedfrequently to ensure there are no fluid leaks. Ifthe control lever or pedal free travel becomesexcessive and the brake pads are not wornbeyond the recommended limit (page 108),there is probably air in the brake system andit must be bled. See your Honda dealer for thisservice.

Front Brake Fluid Level:

With the motorcycle in an upright positioncheck the fluid level. It should be above theLOWER level mark (1). If the level is at orbelow the LOWER level mark (1), check thebrake pads for wear (page 108).

Worn pads should be replaced. If the pads arenot worn, have your brake system inspectedfor leaks.

The recommended brake fluid is Honda DOT4 brake fluid from a sealed container or anequivalent.

COOLANT

Coolant RecommendationThe owner must properly maintain the coolantto prevent freezing, overheating, andcorrosion. Use only high quality ethyleneglycol antifreeze containing corrosionprotection inhibitors specificallyrecommended for use in aluminum engines.(SEE ANTIFREEZE CONTAINER LABEL).

Use only low-mineral drinking water ordistilled water as a part of the antifreezesolution. Water that is high in mineral contentor salt may be harmful to the aluminumengine.

Using coolant with silicate inhibitors maycause premature wear of water pump seals orblockage of radiator passages.Using tap water may cause engine damage.

The factory provides a 50/50 solution ofantifreeze and distilled water in thismotorcycle. This coolant solution isrecommended for most operatingtemperatures and provides good corrosionprotection. A higher concentration ofantifreeze decreases the cooling systemperformance and is recommended only whenadditional protection against freezing isneeded. A concentration of less than 40/60(40% antifreeze) will not provide propercorrosion protection. During freezingtemperatures, check the cooling systemfrequently and add higher concentrations ofantifreeze (up to a maximum of 60%antifreeze) if required.

Page 43: Cbf 600 owners manual

29

InspectionThe reserve tank is below the seat.Check the coolant level in the reserve tank (1)while the engine is at the normal operatingtemperature with the motorcycle in an uprightposition. If the coolant level is below theLOWER level mark (3), remove the reservetank cap (2) and add coolant mixture until itreaches the UPPER level mark (4). Alwaysadd coolant to the reserve tank. Do notattempt to add coolant by removing theradiator cap.

If the reserve tank is empty, or if coolant lossis excessive, check for leaks and see yourHonda dealer for repair.

31

Petrol Containing AlcoholIf you decide to use a petrol containing alcohol(gasohol), be sure it’s octane rating is at leastas high as that recommended by Honda. There are two types of “gasohol”: onecontaining ethanol, and the other containingmethanol. Do not use petrol that containsmore than 10% ethanol. Do not use petrolcontaining methanol (methyl or wood alcohol)that does not also contain cosolvents andcorrosion inhibitors for methanol. Never usepetrol containing more than 5 % methanol, even if it has cosolvents and corrosioninhibitors.

Fuel system damage or engine performanceproblems resulting from the use of fuels thatcontain alcohol is not covered under thewarranty. Honda cannot endorse the use offuels containing methanol since evidence oftheir suitability is as yet incomplete. Before buying fuel from an unfamiliar station, try to find out if the fuel contains alcohol. If itdoes, confirm the type and percentage ofalcohol used. If you notice any undesirableoperating symptoms while using a petrol thatcontains alcohol or one that you think containsalcohol switch to a petrol that you know doesnot contain alcohol.

Page 46: Cbf 600 owners manual

32

For E,F,EK,ED, IIIED,VED,VF,VIE,VIIEK,VIIIED:Use unleaded or low-lead petrol with aresearch octane number of 91 or higher. Werecommend that you use unleaded petrolbecause it produces fewer engine and sparkplug deposits and extends the life of exhaustsystem components.

Use unleaded petrol with a research octanenumber of 91 or higher. The use of leaded petrol will cause prematuredamage to the catalytic converter.

If “spark knock,” or “pinking” occurs at asteady engine speed under normal load, change brands of petrol. If spark knock orpinking persists, consult your Honda dealer.Failure to do so is considered misuse, anddamage caused by misuse is not covered byHonda's Limited Warranty.

ENGINE OILEngine Oil Level CheckCheck the engine oil level each day beforeriding the motorcycle. The level must be maintained between theupper (1) and lower (2) level marks on the oilfiller cap/dipstick (3).1. Start the engine and let it idle for a few

minutes. Make sure the low oil pressureindicator goes off. If the light remains on,stop the engine immediately.

2. Stop the engine and hold the motorcyclein an upright position on firm, levelground.

3. After a few minutes, remove the oil fillercap/dipstick, wipe it clean, and reinsertthe oil filler cap/dipstick without screwingit in. Remove the dipstick. The oil levelshould be between the upper and lowermarks on the oil filler cap/dipstick .

4. If required, add the specified oil (see page 78)up to the upper level mark. Do not overfill.

5. Reinstall the oil filler cap/dipstick. Check foroil leaks.

Running the engine with insufficient oilpressure may cause serious engine damage.

TUBELESS TYRESTo safely operate your motorcycle, your tyresmust be the proper type and size, in goodcondition with adequate tread, and correctlyinflated for the load you are carrying. Thefollowing pages give more detailedinformation on how and when to check airpressure, how to inspect your tyres fordamage, and what to do when your tyres needto be repaired or replaced,

Air PressureKeeping your tyres properly inflated providesthe best combination of handling, tread lifeand riding comfort, Generally, underinflatedtyres wear unevenly, adversely affecthandling, and are more likely to fail from beingoverheated.Overinflated tyres make your motorcycle ridemore harshly, are more prone to damage fromroad hazards, and wear unevenly.

We recommend that you visually check yourtyres before every ride and use a gauge tomeasure air pressure at least once a month orany time you think the tyres might be low.Tubeless tyres have some self-sealing abilityif they are punctured. However, becauseleakage is often very slow, you should lookclosely for punctures whenever a tyre is notfully inflated.

n WARNINGUsing tyres that are excessively worn orimproperly inflated can cause a crash inwhich you can be seriously hurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this owner'smanual regarding tyre inflation andmaintenance.

Page 49: Cbf 600 owners manual

35

Always check air pressure when your tyresare “cold”—when the motorcycle has beenparked for at least three hours. If you check airpressure when your tyres are “warm” — whenthe motorcycle has been ridden for even a fewmiles — the readings will be higher than if thetyres were “cold”. This is normal, so do not letair out of the tyres to match the recommendedcold air pressures given below. If you do, thetyres will be underinflated.

The recommended “cold” tyre pressures are:

InspectionWhenever you check the tyre pressures, youshould also examine the tyre treads andsidewalls for wear, damage, and foreignobjects:

Look for:• Bumps or bulges in the side of the tyre or

the tread. Replace the tyre if you find anybumps or bulges.

• Cuts, splits or cracks in the tyre. Replace thetyre if you can see fabric or cord.

• Excessive tread wear.

Also, if you hit a pothole or hard object, pull tothe side of the road as soon as you safely canand carefully inspect the tyres for damage.Front 250 kPa (2,50 kgf/cm2)

Tyre RepairIf a tyre is punctured or damaged, you shouldreplace it, not repair it. As discussed below, atyre that is repaired, either temporarily orpermanently, will have lower speed andperformance limits than a new tyre.

A temporary repair, such as an externaltubeless tyre plug, may not be safe for normalspeeds and riding conditions. If a temporary oremergency repair is made to a tyre, youshould ride slowly and cautiously to a dealerand have the tyre replaced. If possible, youshould not carry a passenger or cargo until anew tyre is installed.

Even if a tyre is professionally repaired with apermanent internal patch plug, it will not be asgood as a new tyre. You should not exceed 80km/h (50 mph) for the first 24 hours, or 130km/h (80 mph) at any time thereafter. Inaddition, you may not be able to safely carryas much weight as with a new tyre. Therefore,we strongly recommend that you replace adamaged tyre. If you choose to have a tyrerepaired be sure the wheel is balanced beforeyou ride.

Page 52: Cbf 600 owners manual

38

Tyre Replacement: The tyres that came on your motorcycle weredesigned to match the performancecapabilities of your motorcycle and provide thebest combination of handling, braking, durability and comfort.

The recommended tyres for your motorcycleare:

Whenever you replace a tyre, use one that isequivalent to the original and be sure thewheel is balanced after the new tyre isinstalled.

39

Important Safety Reminders• Do not install a tube inside a tubeless tyre

on this motorcycle. Excessive heat buildupcan cause the tube to burst.

• Use only tubeless tyres on this motorcycle. The rims are designed for tubeless tyres, and during hard acceleration or braking, atube-type tyre could slip on the rim andcause the tyre to rapidly deflate.

• When changing tyres, use only the typerecommended (see page 38) and checkthe labels on the new tyres. Using othertypes of tyres in conjunction with the ABSsystem can cause damage to the operationof the system. The ABS systemmicroprocessor operates by comparing thespeed of the two wheels. Tyres of anunapproved type can affect the relativespeed of the wheels and therefore causeincorrect readings by the ABS system.

STARTING THE ENGINEAlways follow the proper starting proceduredescribed below.

This motorcycle is equipped with a side standignition cut-off system. The engine cannot bestarted if the side stand is down, unless thetransmission is in neutral. If the side stand isup, the engine can be started in neutral or ingear with the clutch lever pulled in. Afterstarting with the side stand down, the enginewill shut off if the transmission is put in gearbefore raising the side stand.

To protect the catalytic converter in yourmotorcycle’s exhaust system, avoid extendingidling and the use of leaded petrol.

Your motorcycle’s exhaust containspoisonous carbon monoxide gas. High levelsof carbon monoxide can collect rapidly inenclosed areas such as a garage. Do not runthe engine with the garage door closed. Evenwith the door open, run the engine only longenough to move your motorcycle out of thegarage.

Do not use the electric starter for more than 5seconds at a time. Release the starter buttonfor approximately 10 seconds before pressingit again.

Page 73: Cbf 600 owners manual

59

PreparationBefore starting, insert the key, turn the ignitionswitch ON and confirm the following:• The gearshift is in neutral.

The relative neutral indicator light illuminates.• The engine stop switch is set to (RUN).• The engine oil pressure indicator is

illuminated.• The ABS indicator light is illuminated (see

page 21 – only for CBF600SA/NA)

The low oil pressure indicator should go off afew seconds after the engine starts. If the lightkeeps flashing, stop the engine immediatelyand check the engine oil level.

Operating the engine with insufficient oilpressure can cause serious engine damage.

NOTICE

Page 74: Cbf 600 owners manual

60

Starting procedureTo restart a warm engine, follow theprocedure for “High Air Temperature”.

Normal Air Temperature10° - 35 °C (50° - 95 °F)

1. With the engine cold, pull the choke knob(1) fully out.

2. Start the engine, leaving the throttle closed.

Do not open the throttle when starting theengine with the choke ON. This will lean themixture, resulting in hard starting.

Operating the engine with insufficient oilpressure can cause serious engine damage.

3. Immediately after the engine has started, activate choke knob (1) to keep idle speed

at:1.800 - 2.500 min-1 (rpm)

4. Approximately 30 seconds after the enginehas started push the choke knob (1) fully inuntil it is completely closed.

5. If idling is unstable, open the throttleslightly.

NOTICE

Page 75: Cbf 600 owners manual

61

High Air Temperature35 °C (95 °F) or above

1. Do not use the choke.2. Open the throttle slightly.3. Start the engine.

Low Air Temperature10 °C (50 °F) or below

1. Follow steps 1-2 under “Normal AirTemperature”.

2. When engine speed starts to increaseactivate the choke to maintain fast idle at:1,800-2,500 min-1 (rpm)

3. Continue to warm up the engine until it isrunning smoothly, responding correctly tothe throttle and with the choke knob (1)pressed fully in.

Extended use of the choke may impair pistonand cylinder wall lubrication and damage theengine.

NOTICE

Page 76: Cbf 600 owners manual

62

Flooded EngineIf the engine fails to start after repeatedattempts, it may be flooded with excess fuel.To clear a flooded engine, leave the enginestop switch on (RUN) and push the chokeknob in to Fully OFF (B). Open the throttle fullyand crank the engine for 5 seconds. If theengine starts, quickly close the throttle, thenopen it slightly if idling is unstable. If theengine does not start, wait 10 seconds, thenfollow the Starting Procedure.

RUNNING-INHelp assure your motorcycle’s future reliabilityand performance by paying extra attention tohow you ride during the first 500 km (300miles).During this period, avoid full-throttle starts andrapid acceleration.

Page 77: Cbf 600 owners manual

63

RIDINGReview Motorcycle Safety (pages 1- 7) beforeyou ride.Make sure you understand the function ofthe side stand mechanism.(See MAINTENANCE SCHEDULE on page72 and explanation for SIDE STAND onpage 100).Make sure flammable materials such as drygrass or leaves do not come in contact withthe exhaust system when riding, idling orparking your motorcycle.1. After the engine has been warmed up,

the motorcycle is ready for riding.2. While the engine is idling, pull in the

clutch lever and depress the gearshiftpedal to shift into 1st (low) gear.

3. Slowly release the clutch lever and at thesame time gradually increase enginespeed by opening the throttle.Coordination of the throttle and clutchlever will assure a smooth positive start.

4. When the motorcycle attains a moderatespeed, close the throttle, pull in the clutchlever and shift to 2nd gear by raising thegearshift pedal. This sequence is repeated toprogressively shift to 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th

(top) gear.5. Coordinate the throttle and brakes for

smooth deceleration.6. Both front and rear brakes should be

used at the same time and should not beapplied strongly enough to lock thewheel, or braking effectiveness will bereduced and control of the motorcycle willbecome difficult.

64

BRAKINGFor normal braking, gradually apply both thefront and rear brakes while downshifting to suityour road speed. For maximum deceleration, close the throttleand apply the front and rear brakes firmly. Pullin the clutch lever before coming to acomplete slop to prevent stalling the engine.

Important Safety Reminders:• Independent use of only the front or rear

brake reduces stopping performance.• Extreme braking may cause either wheel to

lock, reducing control of the motorcycle.• When possible, reduce speed or brake

before entering a turn; closing the throttle orbraking in mid-turn may cause wheel slip.Wheel slip will reduce control of themotorcycle.

• When riding in wet or rainy conditions, or onloose surfaces, the ability to maneuver andstop will be reduced. All of your actions

should be smooth under these conditions.Rapid acceleration, braking or turning maycause loss of control. For your safety, exercise extreme caution when braking, accelerating or turning.

• When descending a long, steep grade, useengine compression braking bydownshifting, with intermittent use of bothbrakes. Continuous brake application canoverheat the brakes and reduce theireffectiveness.

• Riding with your foot resting on the brakepedal or your hands on the brake lever mayactuate the brakelight, giving a falseindication to other drivers. It may alsooverheat the brake, reducing effectiveness.

Page 79: Cbf 600 owners manual

Anti-lock braking system (ABS)(CBF600SA/NA)

This model is also equipped with an anti-lockbraking system (ABS) designed to help preventwheel lock-up following sudden braking onirregular or loose terrain while following a straight-line direction. Even though the wheels may notlock, braking suddenly on a bend may cause themotorcycle to skid resulting in loss of control.

In certain conditions, on uneven surfaces orloose terrain a motorcycle with ABS may have alonger stopping distance than a motorcyclewithout ABS.

The ABS system cannot compensate for roadconditions, errors of judgement, or improper useof the brakes. It is always the responsibility of therider to adopt a suitable road speed in relation toweather conditions, the road surface, and thetraffic levels, while leaving an ample margin ofsafety.

The ABS system is self-regulating and alwaysactive.

• The ABS system may be engaged by suddenupward or downward level differences in theroad surface.Make sure you observe the prescriptionsconcerning tyres (page 38). The ABScomputer acts on the basis of thecomparative speeds of the front and rearwheel. The use of non-approved tyres canaffect the speed of the wheels and supplyconfusing information to the ABS computer.

• The ABS system is not active at low speed(around 10 km/h (6 mph) or slower).

• The ABS system will not work if the battery isdischarged.

65

Page 80: Cbf 600 owners manual

66

Indicator light (ABS) (CBF600SA/NA)

This indicator light normally illuminates whenthe ignition switch is set to ON and isextinguished when the motorcycle is ridden at aspeed of more than 10 km/h (6 mph) .If there isa problem with the ABS system, this lightflashes and remains on. When the indicator lightis illuminated the ABS system is not operative.

If the ABS indicator light illuminates whiletravelling, stop the motorcycle in a safe placeand switch off the engine.Return the ignition switch to ON. The indicatorlight should illuminate and then switch off afterthe motorcycle has been ridden at a speed ofmore than 10 km/h (6 mph). If the indicatorlight fails to switch off, this means the ABSsystem is not working, although the normalbraking system will continue to work andsupply the normal stopping power. In theseconditions however the system should bechecked over by an authorized Honda dealeras soon as possible.

The ABS indicator light may illuminate if therear wheel is driven at high speed for morethan 30 seconds when the motorcycle isupright on the stand. This reaction is perfectlynormal. Set the ignition switch to OFF andthen return it to ON. The indicator light shouldilluminate and then switch off after themotorcycle has been ridden at a speed ofmore than 10 km/h (6 mph).

Page 81: Cbf 600 owners manual

67

PARKING1. After stopping the motorcycle, shift the

transmission into neutral, turn the handlebarfully to the left, turn the ignition switch OFFand remove the key.

2. When parking, support the motorcycle on theside stand or centre stand.

Park the motorcycle on firm, level ground toprevent it from falling over.If you must park on a slight incline, aim the frontof the motorcycle uphill to reduce the possibilityof rolling off the side stand or overturning.

3. Lock the steering to help prevent theft(page 46).

Make sure flammable materials such as drygrass or leaves do not come in contact with the exhaust system when parking your motorcycle.

Page 82: Cbf 600 owners manual

68

ANTI-THEFT TIPS1. Always lock the steering and never leave the key in the ignition switch. This sounds simple but

people do forget.2. Be sure the registration information for your motorcycle is accurate and current.3. Park your motorcycle in a locked garage whenever possible.4. Use an additional anti-theft device of good quality.5. Put your name, address, and phone number in this Owner’s Manual and keep it on your

motorcycle at all times. Many times stolen motorcycles are identified by information in the Owner’s Manuals that are stillwith them.

Engine Oil and FilterEngine oil quality is the chief factoraffecting engine service life. Change theengine oil as specified in the maintenanceschedule (page 72).When running in very dusty conditions, oilchanges should be performed morefrequently than specified in themaintenance schedule.

Please dispose of used engine oil in amanner that is compatible with theenvironment. We suggest you take it in asealed container to your local recyclingcenter or service station for reclamation.Do not throw in the trash or pour it on theground or down a drain.

Used engine oil may cause skin cancer ifrepeatedly left in contact with the skin forprolonged periods. Although this isunlikely unless you handle used oil on adaily basis,it is still advisable to

thoroughly wash your hands with soapand water as soon as possible afterhandling used oil.

Changing the oil filter requires a specialoil filter tool and a torque wrench. If youdo not have these tools and the necessaryskill, we recommend that you have yourHonda dealer perform this service.

If a torque wrench is not used for thisinstallation, see your Honda dealer as soonas possible to verify proper assembly.

CLEANINGClean your motorcycle regularly to protect thesurface finishes and inspect for damage wear, and oil or brake fluid leakage.

Avoide cleaning products that are notspecifically designed for motorcycle orautomobile surfaces. They may contain harsh detergents orchemical solvents that could damage themetal, paint, and plastic on your motorcycle.

If your motorcycle is still warm from recentoperation, give the engine and exhaustsystem time to cool off.

We recommend avoiding the use of highpressure water spray (typical in coinoperatedcar washes).

High pressure water (or air) can damagecertain parts of the motorcycle.

Washing the motorcycle

1. Rinse the motorcycle thoroughly with coolwater to remove loose dirt.

2. Clean the motorcycle with a sponge or softcloth using cool water.Avoid directing water at muffler outlets andelectrical parts.

3. Clean the plastic parts using a cloth orsponge dampened with a solution of milddetergent and water. Rub the soiled area, gently rinsing it frequently with fresh water.Take care to keep brake fluid or chemicalsolvents off the motorcycle. They will damage the plastic and paintedsurfaces.

The inside of the headlight lens may beclouded immediately after washing themotorcycle. Moisture condensation inside theheadlight lens will disappear gradually bylighting the headlight in high beam. Run theengine while keeping the headlight on.

4. After cleaning rinse the motorcyclethoroughly with plenty of clean water.Strong detergent residue can corrode alloyparts.

5. Dry the motorcycle, start the engine, andlet it run for several minutes.

6. Test the brakes before riding themotorcycle. Several applications may benecessary to restore normal brakingperformance.

7. Lubricate the drive chain immediately afterwashing and drying the motorcycle.

Braking efficiency may be temporarilyimpaired immediately after washing themotorcycle.Anticipate longer stopping distance to avoid apossible accident.

127

Finishing TouchesAfter washing your motorcycle, consider usinga commercially-available spray cleaner/polishor quality liquid or paste wax to finish the job.Use only a non-abrasive polish or wax madespecifically for motorcycles or automobiles.Apply the polish or wax according to theinstructions on the container.

If a surface on your motorcycle is chipped orscratched, your Honda dealer has touch-uppaint to match your motorcycle's colour. Besure to use your motorcycle's colour code(page 77) when you buy touch-up paint.

Removing Road SaltThe salt contained in seawater and the roadsurface freezing prevention substance whichroads are sprayed with in winter, causes rust.Wash your motorcycle following the pointslisted below when your motorcycle has beenexposed to these conditions.

1. Clean the motorcycle using cool water(page 126).

Do not use warm water. This worsens theeffect of the salt.

2. Dry the motorcycle and the metal surfacesprotected with wax

Painted Aluminum Wheel MaintenanceAluminum may corrode from contact with dirt, mud, or road salt. Clean the wheels afterriding through any of these substances. Use awet sponge and mild detergent. Avoid stiffbrushes, steel wool, or cleaners containingabrasives or chemical compounds.

After washing, rinse with plenty of water anddry with a clean cloth.

Apply touch-up paint to the wheels wheredamage has resulted.

Exhaust Pipe MaintenanceThe exhaust pipe is stainless steel but maybecome stained by oil or mud. If necessary, remove heat stains with a liquid kitchenabrasive.

STORAGE GUIDEExtended storage, such as for winter requiresthat you take certain steps to reduce theeffects of deterioration from non-use of themotorcycle. In addition, necessary repairsshould be made BEFORE storing themotorcycle - otherwise, these repairs may beforgotten by the time the motorcycle isremoved from storage.

STORAGE1. Change the engine oil and filter.2. Make sure the cooling system is filled with

a 50/50% antifreeze solution.3. Empty the fuel tank into an approved petrol

container using a commercially availablehand siphon or an equivalent method.Spray the inside of the tank with an aerosolrust-inhibiting oil.Reinstall the fuel fill cap on the tank.

If storage will last more than one month, carburetor draining is very important, toassure proper performance after storage

n WARNINGPetrol is highly flammable and explosive. You can be burned or seriously injuredwhen handling fuel.

• Stop the engine and keep heat, sparks, and flame away.

• Refuel only outdoors.• Wipe up spills immediately.

4. To prevent rusting in the cylinders, performthe following:• Remove the spark plug caps from the

spark plugs. Using tape or string, securethe caps to any convenient plastic bodypart so that they are positioned away fromthe spark plugs.

• Remove the spark plugs from the engineand store them in a safe place. Do notconnect the spark plugs to the spark plugcaps.

• Pour a tablespoon (15-20 cm3) of cleanengine oil into each cylinder and cover thespark plug holes with a piece of cloth.

• Crank the engine several times todistribute the oil.

• Reinstall the spark plugs and spark plugcaps.

5. Remove the battery. Store in an areaprotected from freezing temperatures anddirect sunlight. Slow charge the batteryonce a month.

6. Wash and dry the motorcycle. Wax allpainted surfaces. Coat chrome with rustinhibiting oil.

7. Lubricate the drive chain (page 97).8. Inflate the tyres to their recommended

pressures. Place the motorcycle on blocksto raise both tyres off the ground.

9. Cover the motorcycle (don’t use plastic orother coated materials) and store in anunheated area, free of dampness with aminimum of daily temperature variation. Donot store the motorcycle in direct sunlight.

Page 145: Cbf 600 owners manual

131

REMOVAL FROM STORAGE1. Uncover and clean the motorcycle.2. Change the engine oil if more than 4

months have passed since the start ofstorage.

3. Charge the battery as required. Install thebattery.

4. Drain any excess aerosol rust-inhibiting oilfrom the fuel tank. Fill the fuel tank withfresh petrol.

5. Perform all Pre-ride Inspection checks(page 56).Test ride the motorcycle at low speeds in asafe riding area away from traffic.

CATALYTIC CONVERTERThis motorcycle is equipped with a catalytic converter. The catalytic converter contains precious metals that serve as catalysts, promoting chemicalreactions to convert the exhaust gases without affecting the metals. The catalytic converter acts on HC, CO, and NOx. A replacement unit must be an original Hondapart or its equivalent.

The catalytic converter must operate at a high temperature for the chemical reactions to takeplace. It can set on fire any combustible materials that come near it. Park your motorcycle awayfrom high grasses, dry leaves,or other flammables.

A defective catalytic converter contributes to air pollution, and can impair your engine’sperformance. Follow these guidelines to protect your motorcycle’s catalytic converter.

• Always use unleaded petrol. Even a small amount of leaded petrol can contaminate the catalystmetals, making the catalytic converter ineffective.

• Keep the engine tuned-up.• Have your motorcycle diagnosed and replaced if it is misfiring, backfiring, stalling or otherwise

not running properly.
