JPy supports all women who follow their dreams Every issue we put a spotlight on a woman whorsquos living her dream in Los Angeles In this issue wersquore featuring a hairstylist Kana and asked her the secret to making your dream come true JPy totally fell in love with her bright smile girly style and a bit manly opinions

ldquoItrsquos all in your mind The rest is whether you try it or notrdquo

What made you move to Los AngelesIn 2005 I came to California to study English After

graduating from a beauty school in Japan I stated

working at a hair salon as a hairstylist and makeup

artist But I always felt like I needed to study English

and was curious about life in overseas Also since

my mom was an English teacher and has done study

abroad I grew up being exposed to foreign cultures

and dreamed of living abroad one day We used to host

foreign exchange students from Europe and Oceania so

I had opportunities to learn about different cultures and

ideas even while living in Japan Once I started living

in California I fell in love with its weather and culture

and didnrsquot want to leave My study abroad was initially

for 6 months so I changed some plans and enrolled in

college I decided to get an American beautician license

and started working at the hair salon I currently work

now Irsquove been living in California for 9 years and I feel

like my personality fits better here than Japan And

nothing can beat the amazing LA weather

Why did you decide to become a hairstylistmakeup artist Since I was young I always loved creating things and

being creative so it was only natural for me to pursue

a career in a creative field Irsquom sure my parents just

wanted me to graduate from a prestigious university

and work for a well-known corporation But I was always

interested in ldquocreating somethingrdquo Since I graduated

from a beauty school and started working I genuinely

love all the work Irsquove ever put my hands on lol Irsquom so

lucky to do what Irsquom passionate about and get paid for

it Some of my clients who work in the entertainment

industry started asking me to work for their photoshoots

or others have offered me to do hair and makeup for

their weddings This is how I started working as

a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist as well

Whatrsquos the difference between working environments in Japan and in America When you work as a hairstylist in Japan you dedicate

yourself to the salon or the company Of course there

are pros and cons about that On the other hand in

America even if you belong to a saloon you work as

an individual hairstylist and yoursquore responsible for

taking care of each client They value individuality and

give you more freedom and flexibility to work but in

return it does come with more responsibility But I

believe American working environment suits me better

What do you think separates someone who lives abroad or studies abroad from someone who wants to do those things but chooses not to Whether ldquoyou make it happen or notrdquo lol I think all the

successful people started accomplishing things ldquoanybody

could accomplishrdquo at first Itrsquos important to ldquojust tryrdquo and

I believe thatrsquos what separates people Also there are

pros and cons for everything But which side you focus

on could drastically change the result There were times

when I struggled with language barrier or obtaining my

visa but nothing good comes out of being negative so

I only focused on positive things Every time I hit a wall

I try to remember the phrase ldquoGod only gives what you

can handlerdquo But I used to think that ldquoGod does give me

a really tall wallrdquo lol Plus I try not to concentrate on

negative things and I think there are many places you

can go in LA that help you switch your mood Almost

everyday the sky is clear and blue Just looking up to

the sky makes you feel like whatever bothering you is so

small Nature can heal you and you can always feel the

nature if you go Hiking and to national parks

What do you love most about your career To me working in a salon and doing hair and makeup as

a freelancer are two completely different jobs When you

work in a salon you work one on one with your client and

my goal is to create what she or he needs But when you

do hair and makeup for corporations or a group of clients

itrsquos important to listen to their vision and work closely

with the crews At my salon I get the most pleasure

when I communicate well with my client and successfully

execute the hairstyle she asked for As for doing hair and

makeup the process of creating something together

with the group is always fun Our job as hairstylists and

makeup artists is to make our client look beautiful Wersquore

always focused on that and not competing against each

other Itrsquos an amazing career that everybody can be happy

What are your goals I want to improve myself so that I can enjoy life wherever

I am Also instead of a big vague goal I set a few small

goals I can easily accomplish by the end of the year When

you accomplish small goals you feel more confident

and if you couldnrsquot accomplish them it gives you an

opportunity to review and revise them Lately I started

feeling like my experience might be beneficial to younger

professionals who are pursing the same career and I

began to want to be an advisor for them one day I would

love to guide them by sharing my skill and experience

Do you have any message to JPy readersrdquoStay Positiverdquo I think everything is all in your head For

example I struggled with language barrier at first but I

overcame that by changing how I dealt with it When it

comes to speaking English itrsquos important to throw away

your pride lol Pride is unnecessary to speak English

Speaking English fluently doesnrsquot make a person better

or other way around Speaking English is an absolute

requirement if you work in this country but I feel like

Asian people often mistake the ability to speak English

to be superior While yoursquore practicing English just show

your willingness to communicate Itrsquos important in any

type of communication Nobody can read your mind You

have to speak up whatrsquos on your mind in English or in

Japanese I believe this is the key to survive in this country

Kana IshiiFrom Yokohama Japan After graduating from a beauty school in

Japan she started working as a hairstylist and makeup artist In

2005 she came to the United States to do a short-term study abroad

program and totally fell in love with Southern Californiarsquos weather

and culture This experience inspired her to get an American

beautician license and ever since then shersquos been working at a local

hair salon She has over 300 American clients at the hair salon and

also works as a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist She does

hair and makeup for weddings photoshoots and fashion shows and

also volunteers to do hair for a non-profit organization GirlsInc In

2013 she won a prize at the biggest hair expo in Los Angeles called

International Salon and Spa Expo and in the same year she was

awarded another prize at Premier Orland a hair expo in Florida

2005年に「語学を習得したい」という思いで短期留学の予定

でカリフォルニアに来ましたそれ以前は日本で美容系の短

大を卒業し美容師ヘアメイクとして美容室で働いていた

のですが今後の人生のために英語の必要性も感じていて

海外を見てみたいという思いもあったからですまた母が英語

教師をしていて彼女自身も留学経験があり海外の文化を積

極的に取り入れる家庭で育ったため子供の頃からどこかのタ

イミングで留学したいと思っていました実家はホームステイ

のホストファミリーとしてヨーロッパやオセアニアの留学生を

受け入れるようなこともあり日本に暮らしながら海外の考え

方や感覚に触れる機会は多かったと思いますそして実際に

カリフォルニアで生活を始めてみるとこの気候とカルチャー

にすっかり魅了され「もう少しここにいたい」と思うようにな

りましたそこで半年の予定だった短期留学のプランを変更

しカレッジに編入長期的に暮らすためカリフォニア美容師

免許を取得して現地のサロンに就職しました現在カリフォ

ルニアでの生活は９年目になりますが性格的にもこの街が

日本より合っていると感じていて特にLAはこの気候が他に

は代えられない魅力だと思います

美容師ヘアメイクのお仕事を選ばれたのは

子供の頃から絵を描いたり何かを作ったりというクリエイティ

ブなことが好きで将来はそういう道に進みたいと思っていま

した両親は割と固く手に職というよりは「良い学校に進ん

で良い会社に就職を」と願っていたと思いますが私は美大

に進むことを考えるくらい「何かを創り出す」というアーティス

ト系の職業に惹かれていました実際に美容学校を出て美容

師として働き始めてからは仕事の全部が好き（笑）好きなこ

とをして喜んでもらってお金をもらえるなんて素晴らしい仕事

だなと常々思っていますサロンワークをしているうちに芸能

関係のお仕事をされているお客様が撮影現場に呼んでくれた

りお客様からウェディングの仕事を依頼されたりするようにな

り自然な流れでサロンワークの傍らフリーランスのヘアメイ

クとしてのキャリアを積むようになりました

日本とアメリカのワーキングスタイルの違いはありますか

美容師として働く場合日本では会社組織となった美容室でサ

ロンの名前を背負って働くのが一般的でそれはもちろん良

い面も悪い面もあります一方アメリカではサロンに所属して

いてもヘアスタイリストの私個人としてお客様と１対１で仕

事をしているというイメージです個が尊重されている分自

己責任の範囲も広いのでとてもアメリカらしいと思いますが

自分にはこちらの働き方の方が合っていると感じています

留学や海外生活をしている人としてみたいけどしない人の一番の違いはどこだと思いますか

それはもう「やるかやらないか」だけ（笑）何かを成し遂げてい

るように思える人も最初はrdquoやろうと思えば誰でもできることrdquoを

してきた人だと思います「やってみること」が一番大切で違い

があるとするならそこしかない気がしますまた物事にはポジテ

ィブサイドとネガテイブサイドがありますがどちらにフォーカス

するかで同じ出来事でも全く違う捉え方ができます私も語学や

ビザの取得で大変だった時期がありましたがネガティブに考

えてもいいことは何もないのでポジティブなことだけに目を向

けるようにしていました壁にぶつかった時は「神様は越えられ

る人にしか試練を与えない」という言葉を思い出すようにして

いますが「それにしても（神様は）よく壁作るなー」と思ってしま

うようなこともありました（笑）ただ「嫌なことは忘れる」は私

のモットーでもありLAには忘れさせてくれる環境が揃っている

気がしますほとんど毎日青空な空を見ていると「まいっか」と

思えるしハイキングや国立公園などで大好きな自然に触れて

癒されると嫌なことも忘れられます

お仕事をしていて楽しい時はどんな時でしょう

まず私はサロンワークとヘアメイクという自分にとっては全く

異なる二つの仕事をしていますサロンワークはクライアント

さんと1対1で相手の求めるニーズを実現するのに対しヘア

メイクは企業さんを相手に彼らの求めるイメージをクルーと

協力してチームで創って行きますそれぞれ楽しいと感じる部

分も違いますがサロンワークではコミュニケーションがきちん

と取れてクライアントさんが理想とするスタイルを創り上げられ

た時が一番嬉しいですまたヘアメイクでは共同作業で作品を

創る過程が楽しいですねヘアスタイリストもヘアメイクもクラ

イアントさんを美しくするのがお仕事誰かを負かして自分が何

かを掴んだりする種の仕事ではないのでみんながハッピーに

なれる素晴らしい職業だと思っています

今の目標を教えて下さい

どこにいても自分の人生を楽しめるように自分自身に力をつけ

たいなと思いますまた漠然とした大きな目標というよりも例

えば年内に達成できるような小さなマイルストーンを常に設定

することを大切にしています小さな目標を成し遂げられれば

成功体験が積み重なって自信にも繋がりできなければ軌道修

正をしていくこともできますまた最近今まで自分がやってき

たことがもしかすると同じ分野を目指す後輩たちにとって役に

立つのではという考えから似たような境遇の方々のアドバイ

ザーになりたいと思うようになりました自分が経験したことを

ノウハウとしてシェアすることでこれから目指す人がよりトラ

イしやすくなるのであれば是非伝えて行きたいです

JPy読者の方々にアドバイスをお願いします

rdquoStay Positiverdquo何事も考え方次第だと思います例えば私も

最初は語学に苦労しましたがそれも考え方と捉え方で乗り

越えましたまず英語に関して言えばプライドを捨てること

が一番大切（笑）英語を話すのにプライドは必要ないし英

語が話せるから偉いわけでも話せないからダメというわけ

でもありませんもちろん英語の取得はこの国で働くための

絶対条件ですが特にアジア圏の人は 英語圏の人の方が強

いみたいな感覚があるような気がします 英語がまだまだの

間はとにかく「伝えたい」という気持ちを見せることそれはど

んなコミュニケーションでも大切なことです英語でも日本語

でも言わなくてはならないことは言わなくてはならずその妥

協はしないということもこの国で生きていくための秘訣です

横浜市出身山野美容芸術短期大学を卒業し首都圏内で美容師ヘアメイクとして勤務した

後2005年に渡米語学取得を目的とした短期留学を予定していたが南カリフォルニアの気

候とカルチャーに惹かれアメリカ美容師免許を取得し現地のヘアサロンに就職するサロン

ではローカルアメリカ人の指名顧客を300人以上持つ傍らフリーランスのヘアメイクアーティ

ストとしても活躍中ウェディングをはじめ撮影やファッションショーのヘアメイクまたNPO法

人GirlsIncでボランティアヘアスタイリストをすることも2013年にはロサンゼルス最大のヘア

エキスポInternational Salon and Spa Expoのコンテストで入賞同年にフロリダ州で開催され

たヘアエキスポ Premier Orlandoでも入賞するなど輝かしい活躍で注目される

どこにいても自分の人生を楽しめるように自分自身に力をつけ

たいなと思いますまた漠然とした大きな目標というよりも例

えば年内に達成できるような小さなマイルストーンを常に設定

することを大切にしています小さな目標を成し遂げられれば

成功体験が積み重なって自信にも繋がりできなければ軌道修

正をしていくこともできますまた最近今まで自分がやってき

たことがもしかすると同じ分野を目指す後輩たちにとって役に

立つのではという考えから似たような境遇の方々のアドバイ

ザーになりたいと思うようになりました自分が経験したことを

ノウハウとしてシェアすることでこれから目指す人がよりトラ

イしやすくなるのであれば是非伝えて行きたいです

JPy読者の方々にアドバイスをお願いします

rdquoStay Positiverdquo何事も考え方次第だと思います例えば私も

最初は語学に苦労しましたがそれも考え方と捉え方で乗り

越えましたまず英語に関して言えばプライドを捨てること

が一番大切（笑）英語を話すのにプライドは必要ないし英

語が話せるから偉いわけでも話せないからダメというわけ

でもありませんもちろん英語の取得はこの国で働くための

絶対条件ですが特にアジア圏の人は 英語圏の人の方が強

いみたいな感覚があるような気がします 英語がまだまだの

間はとにかく「伝えたい」という気持ちを見せることそれはど

んなコミュニケーションでも大切なことです英語でも日本語

でも言わなくてはならないことは言わなくてはならずその妥

協はしないということもこの国で生きていくための秘訣です

Because Sleep Apnea Syndrome happens while we are asleep many of the

patients donrsquot even realize that they have it It is estimated that there are quite

number of potential patients who have not yet been diagnosed nor treated for

it This sleep disorder is serious because the episodes that happen during sleep

affect our lifestyle and activities while wersquore awake It can cause problems to

our everyday life without even noticing it

In order to identify potential patients of Sleep Apnea Syndrome our

clinic has them fill out a simple questionnaire first If the patient shows

any sign of the disorder we then perform an exam have a specialist

diagnose the result and based on that treat the patient accordingly

Usually the treatment of Sleep Apnea Syndrome is done by having a

patient wear an oxygen mask called CPAP (refer to the photo below)

while sleeping However this is not the most comfortable device for

many patients

Therefore at our clinic we adopted a device called Appliance which

to be mounted in the oral cavity This method significantly improves

the condition was newly approved by Medicare and is covered by

most of the insurance All you need to do is to mount what we call

ldquoNight Guardsrdquo on your teeth These are more comfortable compared

to CPAP and they also help prevent snoring

On average smokers are said to live 7 to 9 years shorter than non-

smokers However some data has shown that patients with Sleep

Apnea Syndrome lives 12 to 15 years shorter compared to healthy

people It is indeed a very serious dangerous disorder

生じる無呼吸が起きているときの私たちの活動に様々な影響を及ぼすこと気付かない

当医院では無呼吸症候群の可能性がある患者さんを認識できる簡単な問診票を

記入してもらうことによりもし患者様に無呼吸症候群の可能性があった場合そ

の患者さんの検査を行いその結果を専門医に診断をして頂きそれをベースに適

切な治療を行います

通常の治療法はCPAP (写真参照）と

呼ばれる強制的に酸素を送り込むマ

スクを装着してお休みになってもら

うのですが患者さんにとっては邪

魔になります

そこで当院ではMedicare （国の保険機構）が新たに承認したアプライアンス

という口腔内に装着する装置を導入していますこれにより無呼吸症が著しく改

善され多くの場合は医療保険でカバーされますナイトガードと呼ばれるもの

を上下の歯に装着するものでCPAPに比べ格段に快適で無呼吸症の治療だ

けでなくいびき防止の役割も果たします

喫煙者はタバコを吸わない人より7〜9年寿命が縮むと言われていますが無呼

吸症候群患者は健康な人に比べて12〜15年の寿命が短縮されるというデータ

もある恐ろしい病気なのです

ldquo睡眠時無呼吸症候群（Sleep Apnea Syndrome）rdquoとは寝ている間に呼吸が止まり10秒以上の無呼吸状態が繰り返される病気です睡眠中に下顎が引力で下がり気道が著しく狭くなるあるいは閉鎖してしまうため呼吸困難に陥るという症状で脳梗塞患者の９割が患っているとも言われる深刻な病気です

waiirdquo describes what Streetlight Cadence is all about

Violin cello guitar and accordion all come together to

create their unique style of music which is quite hard

to explain unless you hear them play Band members

all seem like ldquogood guysrdquo and play a relaxing classy

music that makes people feel at home Although itrsquos

been only 5 years since they formed the band Street-

light Cadence seems to have their act together They

regularly play shows at Hard Rock Cafeacute in Waikiki

and last year they competed against 10000 bands

at Hard Rock Rising Intl BOTB and went home with

the 13th place When the band first started all the

members were still in university and were playing live

shows on the streets of Waikiki Now theyrsquove become

one of the most iconic Folk Pop bands in Hawaii

They also have a strong connection with Japan Two

of the band members are half Japanese and thanks

to the support of United States Consulate General in

Okinawa they got to tour in Okinawa in July 2015

Perhaps some of their songs are inspired by Japanese

culture or their trip to Japan Their interesting style

of music covers anything from pop to classic and

their performance is also unique For example one

member playfully holds and plays his violin as if itrsquos

a ukulele Now you understand why the locals love

this band Their beautiful harmony and sweet voice

is bringing in new kind of island breeze to the music

「バトルオブザバンド」にて1万バンドが競う中13位とい

を受け着実に成長し今ではハワイを代表するフォークポ

ップバンドとなったのだまた彼らの日本との関わりはと

ても深く４人のメンバーのうち2人が日本人とのハーフ

今年7月には在沖縄米国総領事館の支援を受け沖縄での

ツアーも行ったこう聞くと楽曲の中に日本のバイブを感

じられる気分にさえなるまた手がける音楽のジャンルが

幅広いことも魅力のひとつでポップやフォーククラシッ
