THE JPK NEWSLETTER

JULY 2018

Patron: Dame Jane Gow, DBE

Sponsored by Ann and Robert Lindsay

‘A member of the Mission to Seafarers, famous for their Flying Angel symbol, told me that he believed people fell into three categories:

“Some are like ancient canal barges because they only move forward when towed. Others are like sailing boats who only operate and function properly when there are

favourable winds.”

“And what’s the third kind?” I asked.

“They are like lifeboats,” he said. “They travel through all waters and all weathers, often against the tide, because they have not only the power within but a distant goal too, that

includes helping others out of trouble.”

I liken the JPK to one of these lifeboats. We have undertaken a courageous endeavour to provide a much-needed Supported Living Centre, against great odds, for people with a learning disability. People, who, through no fault of their own cannot help themselves to be able to learn and need support to live an independent life and become a part of

the community. WEALDEN DISTRICT COUNCIL: I am delighted to announce that Councillor Chris Hardy and Councillor Pam Doodes were re-elected to stand as Chairman and Vice Chairman for a third consecutive year of Wealden District Council at their Annual General Meeting on the 16th May. I was also delighted to learn that the chosen charities will continue to be The JPK Project and Wealden Works. Our sincere congratulations and grateful thanks for their continued support. PROGRESS REPORT: The JPK Palm Court Tea Room has been in operation now for three months and our customer base has increased over the months. We are delighted that we find our many supporters visiting the tea room and bringing their friends, who in turn have been ‘spreading the word’ of the warm welcome they receive and the delicious ‘home’

produced cuisine, including specialist teas and coffee, scones, cakes and a varied selection of light lunches. We have also had several private functions and parties for Cream Teas which proved very successful. One special Cream Tea was held by the newly elected Mayor, Cllr Gill Maddock, who held the first of her Cream Tea and Interview afternoons, as a part of her fundraising initiatives for her chosen charities during her Term in Office. Jill Parker was interviewed by Michelle and she was asked questions about her life. The Mayor will be holding several events like this and interviewing other local women. The Palm Court Tea Room now has its own Telephone Number 01323 304591 should anyone wish to make enquiries for bookings. The Tea Room is currently open from 10am – 4.30pm Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. There is an answer machine should you wish to leave a message with contact details and we will return your call at the first opportunity. None of the above would have been possible without the wonderful support of our fabulous volunteers who are currently running the Tea Room and producing the delicious refreshments. “Snowflakes are one of nature’s most fragile things, but just look what they can do when

they stick together! I doubt if any of our volunteers have thought of themselves as snowflakes, but everyone who has been willing to lend a hand, has made a difference,

which in turn makes the world a better place.” The Symbol Trust The JPK continues to liaise with the Symbol Trust. The Symbol Trust, led by Tessa Duffy, has a 20-year history of excellence in providing high quality, leading-edge services across the UK for people with a learning disability. They consistently achieve outstanding ratings in their regulatory inspections and demonstrate high levels of user satisfaction. Symbol shares the vision and values of the JPK Project and brings the expertise to match our drive and enthusiasm for the new services and housing options we aim to achieve in the Eastbourne area. They are currently undertaking a Feasibility Study, which entails liaising with L D Adult Social Care and Planning for the required changes to the internal reconfiguration of the supported living aspects, together with up to date costs for the new build. They are also investigating a loan facility, along with Roger Bevan, the JPK Financial Advisor, which would enable the JPK to be completed sooner, rather than later!

It is anticipated that Symbol will undertake the Care Management of the JPK when established. Ongoing Activity:

• Student Training - The JPK Project is working hard to fundraise in order to employ qualified training staff. This will enable us to start recruiting Students for training programs commencing this Autumn. We are also liaising with the local Colleges and Employment Services for a working partnership as a ‘two-way’ involvement process.

• DBS Checks - These are currently being undertaken by the JPK Project for all Trustees, Volunteers and eventually Staff.

• Supported Living - Fundraising also continues for the residential aspects of the JPK Project. It is hoped that work on the first three-bedded apartment will be able to commence shortly. In addition, the JPK Project has a further funding stream in progress for the furniture and equipment for this apartment. This is progressing well thanks to the support of several local clubs, societies and organisations.

FORTHCOMING EVENTS AND FUNDRAISING: Sunday Fun Day, 8th July, 12 – 4pm - at Sevenoaks Park, Sevenoaks Road, Langney, BN23 7LT. This is an annual event run by Eastbourne Homes Area Panels. It is an inexpensive ‘fun’ event for all, with everything costing only 50p. The JPK Project are delighted to announce that we have been selected as one of four local charities to benefit from the event proceeds. Beach Life Festival, 17th July - at Princess Park is unfortunately a non-starter for the JPK Project. The event features a Sponsored Bungee Jump but only one person signed up for it. Thank you Rochelle, but we will find another challenge for you in due course. Afternoon Tea, Raffle & Other Attractions, Friday 13th July - at The Cottage, Dittons Road, Polegate, BN26 6HS. This event is kindly being organised by Maureen & John Males & Nicky Powell. It’s not to be missed ‘whatever the weather’ and a lovely opportunity to be able to sit and relax with friends in beautiful surroundings, with delicious tea. You will also be waited upon ‘by gorgeous waitresses’! (Don’t hold your breath on the latter but the rest is correct!) Please contact Maureen on 01323 482011 to book a table or space. We look forward to seeing you. East Sussex Women in Business Awards, Friday 20th July - The JPK Project have been invited to attend this prestigious event which includes dinner and an awards ceremony and will take place at The Cavendish Hotel. The JPK Project was nominated by Richard Dew under the category of Lifetime Achiever’s Award, one of several categories. We aren’t holding our breath, but wonderful to be invited and our thanks to Richard. The JPK Annual General Meeting, Thursday, 16th August - at the JPK Community Training Centre, Church Street, Eastbourne, BN21 1HP. Refreshments on arrival at 6.30pm with the meeting to commence at 7pm. We are being honoured this year with the presence of The Chairman of Wealden District Council, Councillor Chris Hardy. Should you wish to attend please fill in the attached notice and return this to Jill Parker MBE, Secretary, at the address on the form, or email [email protected] (including your name, address & email) or telephone 01323 486179. On receipt I will send you all the papers for the meeting in advance. Should you wish to comment on the Accounts we would need to receive your questions at least one week before the meeting so that we can forward these to our Accountant. An AGM is perhaps not the most exciting item for your diary, but we would welcome your support at this event. You will learn more about the JPK, its achievements,

progress and future proposals, and you will also be able to meet the Trustees and the Project’s advisors who are the driving force behind the JPK. I look forward to seeing you. The JPK Charity Golf Day, Friday 7th September – We are glad to announce our 14th annual golf day which will take place at Willingdon Golf Club once again. We are extremely grateful to Mark Bennett, JPK Project Trustee, and his Golf Day Committee Team. They are working hard to arrange and recruit the golf teams for this event, and to line up sponsors and obtain prizes for the Auction and Raffles. It is always a very well organised and attended event and thanks to the generosity of everyone who attends we normally raise over £10,000. Over the past 13 years this has totalled in excess of £130,000. We have an added attraction this year with a Citroen Car as a Hole in One Prize on the 7th Tee by kind permission of Wilmoths Citroen Garage, The Triangle, Willingdon. (We had the car last year but rain stopped play so we are hoping for better weather this year!) Concentus Choir Saturday, 8th December, 4pm - at St Leonards Church, Seaford. Retiring collection for the JPK Project. Concentus Choir Carol, Sunday 9th December, 1.30 – 3pm - Singing in the Arndale Centre and collecting for the JPK Project. Further details in the October Newsletter. Eastbourne Local Lottery The JPK Project has subscribed to this local fundraising initiative for charities. 50% of all tickets sold from our page goes directly to the JPK, 10% to local good causes and the remaining 40% goes to the management and running of the Lottery. I have to say Eastbourne Borough Council are very efficient and helpful and provide all the advertising flyers and updates on a weekly basis including the number of people who have subscribed to our page. To date the JPK has sold 35 tickets with 11 supporters and only 2 who have ‘opted out’. To date, with your help, we will be raising £910 per year! You are also eligible to win up to £25,000! Win! Win! To start supporting the JPK with £1 per week just visit:

www.EastbourneLocalLottery.co.uk and search for the JPK Sussex page. Our target is to have sold 50 tickets. Good Luck and thank you in anticipation of your support. FURTHER NEWS AND INFORMATION: Learning Disability Adult Social Care Cuts I notified you all about the cuts proposed to services for people with a learning disability in the last Newsletter. The consultation stage has finished and I understand that the consultation document went to East Sussex County Council Cabinet last month for their decision. I believe the cuts will remain as proposed but understand that no changes will be made until April 2019. I hope to arrange a meeting with Stephen Lloyd, MP, to discuss this matter shortly in the hope that he can take this serious issue up with Central Government. Gift Aid The JPK Project has recently made our Gift Aid and GASDS (small collections) Return to HMRC with total value of:

• Gift Aid Donations £11,365.22 • GASDS £4,704.25

The Gift Aid reclaim from HMRC to the JPK Project should therefore be in the region of £4,017.37. This is a wonderful bonus and my grateful thanks for letting me know if you are eligible for us to reclaim tax. As you can see, at the end of the year it can certainly make a difference. My grateful thanks to Robert Gausden who assists me every year in undertaking our online reclaim. Phew, another year over. Please remember you have to pay tax, above the donation that you make, and that Council Tax and VAT are not included. For new subscribers the JPK Project needs to receive a signed Gift Aid Form which can be found at the end of this Newsletter or by downloading the Gift Aid Form from our website - see www.thejpkproject.co.uk UNWANTED GIFTS: We are ever grateful for the unwanted gifts we receive which are used for our many fundraising events, especially Raffles and Tombolas. We are now selling your unwanted donated items in our Daisy Chain Gift Shop within the Palm Court Tea Room. Items have been ‘flying off’ the shelves and since the last Newsletter your gifts have raised £1,158.00! Fabulous and what a difference this is making. Thank you for your support and please keep them coming!

USED INK CARTRIDGES AND MOBILES: Jenny Frampton has continued to collect used mobile phones (mobile phones only, not chargers). These can raise 50% of the market value for the JPK Project which she sends to Recycle4Charity. Jenny has recently learnt that we can now collect empty Ink Cartridges but only a particular type. I have a 3-page list of the cartridges that they will receive (too many to list here) but basically any make but they have to be the ‘small square box shape’ which will fit in the palm of your hand. £1 is donated to the JPK Project for every cartridge. So………..please start collecting again and pass the word to friends and family – it will all make a difference. You can deliver to Jill or she will collect. THE JPK PROJECT WEBSITE: The JPK Project website, having been refreshed by Julie Bennett, continues to be updated on a regular basis and is gradually getting more information included. You can still send information to me or you may send directly to Julie on [email protected]. More pages of information are being designed as we progress and we are grateful to Julie for managing this digital part of our development. Julie will also contribute to our facebook page so do send us news of anything regarding the Project that you think might be of interest to our supporters and members, or even some ‘good comments’! We would also be grateful for photographs of any JPK events. Pictures say so much, particularly online. DATA PROTECTION: By necessity the JPK has had to comply with the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The JPK has always kept our Newsletter subscribers and any other data secure and have never passed on individuals’ information to a third party, unless with consent. Everyone on our contact list has given me their contact details so as they can receive the Newsletter so in my view you have given your consent. However, this is no longer sufficient and since the last Newsletter you have all received emails from the JPK Project to kindly ask you ‘opt in’ so that we have a clear trail of your consent to hear from us. No response prior to the GDPR implementation at the end of May means we are no longer able to send our marketing updates by email, including the JPK Newsletter. I’m pleased to confirm that many of our contacts opted in but, to date, 83 contacts have not responded.

This is, in the main, likely to be that some people forgot to respond, didn’t know what to do with the notification or didn’t receive the emails. I will contact you those people personally, if I can. In the meantime, if you are aware of anyone who is no longer receiving emails from the JPK Project and would like to do so please refer to them to the website where you can sign up (scroll to the bottom of the homepage). With regard to those of you who receive our Newsletter by post, this new legislation refers to you too. If you are happy to receive it by email instead (which saves on postage and printing for the Project) please sign up online as above. If you would like to continue to receive this by post OR no longer wish to receive communication at all please let me know and I will delete your information from my database. I appreciate that this is time-consuming, but failure to comply could compromise the JPK Project and place us, ultimately, at the risk of being fined. I thank you for your support in this matter. GRAPHIC DESIGN: Mick Cooke continues to assist the JPK Project with graphic design services as required for our posters, flyers, invitations and tickets and everything I ask of him, on a voluntary basis. He also comes up with some brilliant ideas for raising the profile of the JPK. His flyers to promote the Palm Court Tea Room are always in production. Thank you. IT SUPPORT: Cliff continues to support me and, in turn, the JPK Project with all my IT requirements and assistance ‘at the drop of a hat’ when I get into trouble, either by Team Viewer or in person! Recently, my ‘tower’ blew up and he had to build a new one. During this period he provided an alternative so that I could still ‘keep connected’. All this on a voluntary basis and at no cost to the JPK. Now that the JPK Palm Court Tea Room is operational it is necessary for this area to have an IT Service and Cliff will be providing a new computer and installing all the programs we require. We are also extremely grateful for the recent donation of a superb office printer from Judy and Russell Colbran of Colbran + Wingrove, Building Contractors. It’s an essential for our Centre office alongside our new computer. Thank you so much for your generosity and support.

JILL PARKER recommends Community Fundraising with Utility Warehouse Discount Club

We're Utilities Brand of the Year

Together, as one team, we’ve scooped the BIGGEST and BEST Which? award ever.

This is a huge achievement we should all be immensely proud of. It means you can confidently go out there and tell everyone we’re officially the BEST for our main

services.

"Utility Warehouse consistently receives praise from their broadband, energy and mobile customers for its customer service which has been called first class"

Peter Vicary-Smith, Which? Chief Executive We just wanted to make sure you got this amazing news ‘hot off the press’.

Well done, #TeamPurple. Together, we’re No.1!

Most people take all the services and have the following benefits: Fixed Energy Rate for 2 years. 10% off your landline and broadband, every year, and not just an introductory offer. Free LED Light Bulbs with free fitting (15% saving on your electricity bill). Do count your bulbs, as the best quality are supplied and will always be supplied free, all the time you are a customer. You never have to buy a bulb again (value £8 ea). Jill has had 60 high quality LED light bulbs supplied and fitted free, giving a 15% saving on her annual electricity bill. Jill’s energy has also been fixed with a further saving of £300.00 p.a. PATRICK PARKER finds the one bill “very convenient”.

JACQUIE DAVIES - my late husband, Paul Davis, and I were introduced to Jill Parker and her daughter Katie at a dinner with mutual friends. Paul and I became interested in Jill's JPK Project and subsequently we put on our 17 piece Big Band concerts at a Hotel in Eastbourne. The raffle proceeds and money from the ticket sales went to the JPK Project. When I received the JPK Newsletter and learned about the Utility Warehouse and all its benefits I began making enquiries. Via Valerie Garner, I have now moved over to U.W. my broadband, landline, mobile phone, Gas and Electricity making huge savings and life so much easier with one itemised overall bill. I cannot fault the service I have received, Everyone has been helpful, considerate and patient with me as technology is certainly not my forte! Added to all this they supplied and fitted free, over 30 LED light bulbs for my house so I will never have to buy another light bulb again. It will also help the JPK at the same time which I am delighted with, as UW pay each month a small percentage of their profits from my bill back to the JPK and this will go towards the building and upkeep. So I save and the JPK receives money. It's win win. Special arrangement You too can save money every day using Utility Warehouse, while automatically raising monthly funds for J.P.K. (without any effort) as the Utility Warehouse offers guaranteed savings on your household bills. Also switching to UW, will cause them, via our special arrangement, to donate approx. 5% of your bill spend to J.P.K. every single month. Community Fundraiser Please ring Val Garner on 01275 856203 or 07942860173 – We have been customers for over 12 years and would love to give you a free quote and save you money on your household bills and help the charity too with no ‘high pressure’ sales talk. IN SUMMARY: The JPK Project has certainly made much progress in the last 3 months and all thanks to the generous support and with donations from so many people. There is still much to be achieved but we are now ‘on a roll’ and who knows what I shall be reporting on in October. Watch this space. “Our erstwhile ‘dream’ is gradually becoming a reality and all thanks to the many, many people who have supported us in the past and continue to do so. We thank you all for your ‘faith’ in our endeavors. ‘Hang on in there’, as it is you that gives us the strength and encouragement to battle on to see the JPK completed and commissioned, for those that need our help on the Pathway to their Independence.” JPK CONTACT DETAILS: Mrs Jill Parker MBE, Chairman to the Trustees 7 Wannock Avenue, Willingdon, Eastbourne, East Sussex, BN20 9RP Business: 0834 289 3624 Home: 01323 486179 Email: [email protected] Website: www.thejpkproject.co.uk
