NEW! FOREMAN SKILLS TRAINING COURSE
FOREMAN SKILLS TRAINING:
Developed jointly by Labor and Management, this course is designed to provide current
supervision and prospective supervision with information to develop their performance and
leadership skills. This course will focus on the importance of Planning, Documentation,
Leadership and Teamwork. The participants will also gain insights on effective Task
Organization, Job Productivity Strategies, People Skills and Communications. The True
Cost of an Hour of Labor and how to properly deal with reports of Sexual or Ethnic
Harassment will be discussed. There will be a third party proctored multiple choice exam.
The Foreman Training manual is required at a cost of $82.00.

ADVANCED PLAN READING & RELATED DRAWING:
This is a 9 week course that will be held on Wednesdays from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. An overall
view of modern plans and job coordination will be presented. Advanced Plan Reading and
Related Drawing text is required at a cost of $77.00. Students are required to bring two (2)
different colored highlighters and a simple function calculator to the first day of class.
(Note: This class will be a prerequisite for registration in
Drafting and Field Coordination and CAD classes)

DRAFTING AND FIELD COORDINATION:
This is a 40 week course that will start on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 from 5:00 to
9:30 p.m. This course is designed to familiarize the student with the additional concepts,
problems and required skills of the draftsman. The emphasis will be on traditional drafting
and coordination. Hand sketching will be reviewed. The reading and interpretation of
contract drawings with full integration of architectural, structural, and mechanical drawings
will be explained. Integration of written specifications, fixture and equipment cuts,
supports, pads and hanging systems will be explained. Creation of shop drawings, slot &
sleeve drawings, coordination drawings, as – built drawings, and close – out charts and lists
will be explained. Layout of mechanical rooms, foundation penetrations, and coordination
of water main and sewer connections will be explained.
Revisions, addendums, and architect’s supplemental instructions
will be explained with discussion of their impact on change orders,
extras, and deletions from the original contract.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS: This is a 9-week course that will be held on Mondays from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. This course
will provide an overview of computer technology, theory and concepts including an
introduction to microcomputer terminology. Functions and capabilities of word processors,
spreadsheets, databases and graphics are covered through lecture, discussion and hands-on-
assignments. Concepts include types of software and hardware, data structure and
management, communications and network fundamentals will be discussed.

CAD - LEVEL I: INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING
Pre-requisite: for this course you must have previously completed Advanced Plan
Reading AND Introduction to Computers This is a 12 week course designed as an introduction to computer aided drafting (CAD) and
the CAD environment. This course will examine the fundamentals of CAD software as
applied to two – dimensional CAD piping drawings. The U.A. Auto CAD 2011 Level I
binder is required at a cost of $164.00. Also available for purchase will be Auto CAD 2011
Software at a cost of $235.00

CAD - LEVEL II: COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING
Pre-requisite: for this course you must have previously completed Auto CAD Level I This is a 12 week course which will examine the more advanced capabilities of AutoCAD
drafting software as applied to two – dimensional CAD piping drawing production. The
UA Auto Cad Level II binder is required at a cost of $164.00.

MULTI-PURPOSE DOMESTIC & FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEMS:
This is a 9-week course that will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. This course
will cover the ASSE Series 7000 Standard for plumbing based fire protection systems for
one and two family dwellings. ASSE 7000 covers an integrated multi-purpose domestic
system providing potable water and fire protection. The course will include general
plumbing, basic fire science, approved domestic fire sprinklers, approved products and a
working knowledge on location, sizing and installing domestic fire sprinkler systems.
Additionally, standpipe systems and NYFD testing will be discussed. There
will be discussion of the various licenses and certificates required such as
City Wide Maintenance of Sprinkler Systems for Testing.

OSHA 10 and INDUSTRY SAFETY:
This course will focus on the recognition of workplace safety hazards, with emphasis on
accident prevention. Among other subjects, proper use of personal protection equipment
such as safety glasses, dust masks, proper work clothing, etc., will be discussed. Proper
lifting and carrying techniques to prevent employee injury will be taught. Ladder, scaffold,
and power tool safety will be addressed. Proper handling and disposal of common
hazardous materials will be covered. The NEW Hazard Communication Standard
explaining the format of Safety Data Sheets will be discussed. This is a 13.5 hour course.
Classes will be held from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. All classes will run for three weeks.
10 Hour OSHA certification cards will be issued.

NYC-DOB 4 - HOUR SUPPORTED SCAFFOLD USER:
This course will provide the scaffold user with the basic safety requirements to help in
identifying the hazards associated with work on and around supported scaffolds. Users will
be informed about OSHA and ANSI standards. Recognition of electrical hazards, fall
hazards and falling object hazards in the work area are reviewed. Proper handling of
materials on the scaffold and proper scaffold climbing procedures will be discussed. This
course will introduce common hazards associated with aerial lifts and will discuss safe work
practices to prevent these common hazards. Upon successful completion of this course,
students will earn a New York City Department of Buildings (NYC-DOB) Four Hour
Supported Scaffold User Certification.

*OSHA 30 HOUR:
This course provides complete information on OSHA compliance issues as well as an
intensive review of OSHA standards dealing with specific hazards. Participants will
become familiar with navigating and applying the OSHA construction regulations found in
29 CFR 1926. The student will gain an understanding of standard construction safety and
health principles that prepare them to recognize and abate a variety of hazardous conditions.
OSHA regulations as they pertain to electrical safety, fall protection, scaffold safety,
stairways and ladders, personal protection equipment, health hazards and lifesaving
equipment will be discussed. The NEW Hazard Communication Standard explaining the
format of Safety Data Sheets will be discussed. Upon successful completion of this course,
students will earn a 30 Hour OSHA card and a New York City Department of Buildings
approved Four Hour Supported Scaffold User Certification card, and will be equipped to
act as a competent person on their jobsite.

STANDARD FIRST AID WITH CPR/AED:
This 8 HOUR course will provide you with the skills necessary to prevent, recognize and
provide basic care for injuries and sudden illness until advanced medical personnel arrive.
The class’s dynamic hands on practice sessions and real life scenarios make learning
exciting and first aid techniques easy to remember.

BACKFLOW - INITIAL CERTIFICATION:
This course covers the required practices for inspection, annual required testing, repairs and
maintenance of backflow prevention assemblies used in the cross – connection control
program of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. Course material
includes information needed for identifying cross - connections, understanding how
backflow occurs and the dangers they present, methods used to control backflow and the
recommended applications for each type of backflow assembly. Students successfully
completing the course will be Certified Backflow Prevention Device Testers as per the
regulations of the New York State Department of Health and The American Society of
Sanitary Engineering. There will be a third party proctored written and practical exam.
There is an additional $110.00 ASSE Fee which includes the Backflow Manual and Test
Fee. The Test and Manual Fee is payable by Money Order or check made out to:

BACKFLOW RE-CERTIFICATION:
To maintain your Certified Backflow Prevention Device Tester certification you must
complete a 16 hour renewal training course. You should begin this process three (3) months
prior to your certification expiration date. There will be a third party proctored written and
practical exam. There is an additional $85.00 ASSE Test Fee to take the exam. The fee
includes a handbook of test procedures and troubleshooting guidelines. The Test and
Manual Fee is payable by Money Order or check made out to: Trade Education Fund.

MEDICAL GAS:
This is a 9-week course that will be held on Friday, from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. This course
covers NFPA – 99 2012 Edition. This course includes code interpretation, correct piping
installation and testing, requirements for installer qualification, and requirements for brazer
qualification in accordance with ASME Section IX. There will be a third party proctored
written exam and a two position brazing test required for certification as installer and brazer
of Medical Gas Systems. Three courses will be held. Practice and test materials will be
supplied by the school. There is an additional $116.00 Test Fee to take the exam.
The Test Fee is payable by Money Order or check made out to: NITC.

UA STAR PLUMBING MASTERY EXAM:
This course is a review / prep for the UA Star exam. The course will be 18 hours long,
spread over four nights. All of the subjects covered by the exam will be reviewed. The
subjects covered in the examination consist of: Piping and Tubing, Inspection and Testing,
Plumbing Fixtures, Water Supply and Distribution, Drainage, Waste and Vent Systems,
Pumps, Welding, Gas, Safety, Related Science and Code, Blueprint Reading, Mathematics
and Measurement. This comprehensive exam is designed to test the knowledge of the
experienced plumber who has a minimum of five years of field experience. The
examination consists of 199 questions. To pass this exam you must answer at least 158
questions correctly. The passing score is 79.4 %. This is a closed book exam. NOTE: You
may use a standard non recording calculator during the class and during the test; all other
electronic devices are prohibited. There is an additional $136.00 Test Fee to take the exam.
The Test Fee is payable by Money Order or check made out to: NITC.

CRANE SIGNAL PERSON CERTIFICATION COURSE:
This is an intensive course that will give the crane signalperson candidate the basic
knowledge of crane operations and limitations, understand specific considerations
concerning the construction site, and know applicable standards and regulations. This
course will give the crane signalperson candidate the knowledge to give accurate visible and
audible signals to the crane operator. Signals for both mobile and tower cranes are tested.
There will be a third party proctored written and practical exam administered by the
National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators. Successful candidates
will receive their NCCCO Signalperson Certification. There is an additional $95.00
NCCCO test fee which includes the Student Manual for the course. The Test and Manual
Fee is payable by Money Order or check made out to: Trade Education Fund.

GREEN TECHNOLOGY COURSES FOR JOURNEYMEN
INTRODUCTION TO SOLAR THERMAL WATER HEATING:
This 9 week course will cover all of the unique aspects of design and installation of solar
water heating systems for both commercial and residential applications. Topics will include
scientific principles, collector design, storage tank considerations, system components,
operation fundamentals and layout, site assessment, testing, startup and maintenance. The
UA Solar Water Heating Systems and Fundamentals Textbook is required and will be
available in class. Competency in this material will be determined through periodic quizzes
and a final written exam.

SOLAR THERMAL WATER HEATING INSTALLATIONS:
Pre-requisite: for this course you must have previously completed Introduction to Solar
Thermal Water Heating This 9 week course is intended to provide journeymen with the hands-on experience
necessary to successfully install a solar thermal water heating system on the jobsite. In this
class, students will work together to install three different system designs. A drainback
system utilizing a flat plate collector, a pre-packaged system with a pump station, back-up
water heater and a flat plate collector, and a commercial style system utilizing an evacuated
tube collector, heat dissipator and an external heat exchanger in conjunction with a back-up
electric water heater will all be installed by the class. Collector installation will take place
on a residential style pitched roof and a commercial style flat roof. The remaining
components will be installed in a mechanical room below. Discussion of proper safety
equipment and techniques will be a key element of this class. Proper jobsite attire is
required. Students will also be required to bring safety glasses, work gloves and a rule.

G/PRO: FUNDAMENTALS OF BUILDING GREEN and GREEN PLUMBING:
This 5 week course is designed to teach the journeyman the principles of sustainability
combined with trade specific green construction knowledge. This course was developed by
the New York City Chapter of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and
the United Association with the goal of making the G/PRO credential a requirement on
LEED and sustainable jobs throughout the country. This course will provide the
journeyman with the additional knowledge needed to understand the Fundamentals of
Building Green as well as the new regulations for green building as it applies to plumbing.
There will be a third party proctored written exam required for G/PRO certification. There
is an additional $75.00
G/PRO Test Fee to take the exam which includes the Fundamentals and Plumbing manuals.

is designed to aid the student in understanding and navigating through the International
Plumbing Code most recently adopted by the City of New York. A 2014 NYC Plumbing
Code book is required which will be available at a cost of $77.00.

CONFINED SPACE ENTRY SAFETY – GENERAL COURSE:
This course will be 18 hours long, spread over four nights. This course is designed to
enable students to: recognize if a space is a confined space; identify the characteristics and
hazards associated with the confined space; properly evaluate the confined space as either
permit required or a non-permit space; review and become familiar with confined space
entry procedures and permits; determine appropriate control measures for
ensuring a safe entry. This course will cover topics including air
monitoring and ventilation. The student will be able to identify proper
rescue procedures, practices and equipment.
PLEASE BE ADVISED: This course is only a general knowledge course about
Confined Space Safety. SITE SPECIFIC supplementary training is needed before
attempting entry into confined space areas. The CONTRACTOR is to provide SITE
SPECIFIC procedures/safe work practices for employees required to enter confined
spaces.

RIGGING COURSE
RIGGING:
This is a 9 week course that will be held on Tuesdays, from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m. This course is
designed to enable students to understand the proper rigging techniques to be used on
typical plumbing jobs. This course will focus on the proper planning and precautions
required when lifting materials and equipment. It will enable the student to understand safe
rigging of loads, proper application of slings and rigging hardware. Knot tying, rope
handling, and basic hand signals will be covered. Classroom
instruction will be blended with time in the rigging shop, where
these principles can be put into practice. During shop time,
proper jobsite attire is required. Students will also be required to
bring safety glasses, work gloves and a rule. A Rigging manual is
required which will be available at a cost of $22.00.

ARC WELDING I: (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) SMAW
This course will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays of every week from 5:00 to 9:30
p.m. This course will be for the beginner welder. This course will provide you with a
thorough understanding of arc welding, welding safety, arc welding power sources,
electrode classifications and selection. It will also provide training to develop the skills
necessary to make welds in all positions on mild steel plate using E6010 and E7018
electrodes.

ARC WELDING II: (Shielded Metal Arc Welding) SMAW
This course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every week from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m.
This course will be for the beginner pipe welder. This course will provide the student with
a thorough understanding of uphill pipe welding and weld quality. It will also provide the
necessary training to develop the welding skills necessary to produce quality multipass
welds on pipe in the 2G and 5G positions, using E6010 and E7018 electrodes. This course
will provide the student with the fundamentals for layout and fabrication of typical pipe
connections and to use mathematics, basic equations etc. for properly fabricating these
connections.

Pre-requisite: Uphill Welding Certification A.S.M.E. Section IX B 31.1 This course will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every week from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m.
This course will provide the welder with a thorough understanding of Gas Tungsten Arc
Welding, arc characteristics and welding safety. It will provide training to develop
the skills necessary to make quality gas tungsten arc welds on mild steel plate, leading to
the skills necessary to produce quality welds on pipe.

ORBITAL WELDING TECHNOLOGY:
This course will be held on 4 consecutive nights from 5:30 to 9:30 P.M. This course will
provide the welding operator with a thorough knowledge of how the
Automated Orbital Welding process operates. The welding operator
will learn how to program the machine which controls the functions
of arc current level, travel speed, arc voltage and power supply. The
welding operator will develop the skills necessary to prepare the
tube ends, center the components to be welded in the fixture block,
mate the weld head to the fixture block, initiate purge and shielding
gases and signal the machine to begin the welding process.

GASFITTERS LAYOUT: This is a 6 week course that will cover the welding, pipefitting and tool
safety related to WELDING in the Plumbing Industry. Review of pipe
schedule chart, pipe stands, pipe leveling techniques and how to correctly
cut pipe using Orbital Track cutter will be discussed. Correct use of oxy /
acetylene torch and how to prepare bevels for proper fit-up of pipe and
fittings will be explained. This course will include the correct way to install
threadolets, sockolets and weldolets. The use of different types of fit-up clamps and proper
rigging techniques will be reviewed. There will be discussion on unique ways to lay out
pipe and fittings in the field without math or manuals, the mitering of pipe and fittings and
the fabrication of specialty tools for the trade. This is a “Hands-on” class requiring proper
work clothes.

Introduction to On-Line Learning
This is an introductory class given to prepare students who have little or no experience with distance
learning to take on-line courses. This class is offered by the U.A. through Washtenaw Community
College, in Michigan. There is no charge for U.A. members.
Requirements/Prerequisites: Participants must have High Speed Internet access and be familiar with
a computer, navigating the Internet and using email.
Labor History & the UA: 1800 to Present
Labor History and the UA is a course covering the struggles of the labor movement from 1800 to
Present. This course will cover events and people through time that have played an important role in
labor history. The required texts are: "Skilled Hands, Strong Spirits" $15.00,” Labor in America"
$25.00 and the Building Trades CD for $7.00.
