I am pleased to present the second issue of Journal of Advancements in Library Sciences

(Vol. 1, Issue 2). This issue has eight contributions which are maturely researched and original in nature.

“An Introduction to Social Media Tools for Academic Libraries” is the first paper which deals in the digital

environment which continues to become more pervasive in the libraries. The academic libraries are

transforming their spaces into new environments with the information needs of the 21st century users. This

paper discusses and provides exploratory study investigating on the use of various social networking and

social media tools that are of great significance to the present day libraries. The second paper entitled as

“Assessment of RFID Enabled Libraries: A User Perception” which talks about the level of awareness about

Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) among library users and reveal the impact of the same on

various library procedures performed by users in library. The paper provides an insight about future

processes to enhance the use of this technology in libraries. “Library 2.0 Services in the Information

Technology Era” is the third paper, which is contemporary in nature. The authors say that Web 2.0

technology site gives its users the free choice to interact or collaborate with each other. This paper is an

attempt to explain the concept of Web 2.0 and how Web 2.0 Tools are applicable for providing Library 2.0

services in Information Technology era. The fourth paper is on “Utilization of Directory of Open Access

Journal by Faculty Members of Government First Grade College, Kushalnagar, Karnataka: A Case Study”.

The findings of the study reveals that all the respondents are aware of the DOAJ abstracts for their study

purpose and they agreed that there is an impact of DOAJ abstracts on their study. “Citation Analysis of

Open Access Medical Journal “JK Science” is the fifth paper. The study is carried out for a period of 5 years to

analyze growth of research output and understand the relationship between citing and cited documents by

medical practitioners. Multi-author contribution is maximum and Single-author contribution amounts to

revealing increasing trends towards collaborative research. The sixth paper is again novel and current in its

scope. It is entitled as “Webometric Analysis of Library Websites of Indian Institutes of Technology”. The

purpose of this study is to analyze the library websites of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) through

webometric indicators including URL analysis, Web Impact Factor (WIF) calculation, link pattern analysis

as well as file formats analysis. The seventh paper is about the “Opinion of Young Adults towards Collection

Management of Public Libraries in Karnataka”. The paper aims to look at the Young Adult Public Library

(YAPL) users' opinion towards collection of public libraries in Karnataka. A well thought-out questionnaire

was administered to gather data by using random sampling method and collected data were analyzed with

the help of SPSS version 16. The last and the eighth paper is “Big Data and Libraries”. This is one of the hot

topics in computer science today. This is being talked about very much among computer scientists. In this

paper the authors deal with the 'Big Data' and its relevance in libraries. The contents reveal that very large

amounts of data are being generated due to digital technologies and online activities. The Editorial team at

STM Journals looks forward for your support in future. Also welcome further suggestions in bringing the

Abstract The paper aims to examine the level of awareness about Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) among library users and reveal the impact of the same on various library

procedures performed by users in library. To address the research objectives articulated

in this study various departments from the faculty of science, University of Kashmir were selected on randomly in order to study the level of awareness about RFID technology.

The survey method based on questionnaire was applied to reveal the impact of the same

technology on students. A 15 item, closed-ended questionnaire was distributed amongst 80 Students. However, only 56 students returned the filled questionnaire, thus the

response rate is equal to 70 percent. The students cite many features for using RFID like there is no checking while leaving the library, Self-Issue/Return, save their time, easy

access to information and self-checking of personal records. In enhancing patron

experiences libraries should conduct training and orientation programmes. This study arrives at conclusion that most of the student learnt to operate RFID by themselves,

followed by friends/colleagues and library staff and found it more interactive than

barcode technology. The paper provides an insight about future processes to enhance the use of this technology in libraries and how it aids users to carry out routine based library

procedures. The study takes into account how and what the users perceive of RFID technology and its impact on day to day procedures and activities carried out by patrons

in libraries.

Webometric Analysis of Library Websites of Indian

Institutes of Technology

Akhandanand Shukla*, Vanlalfeli Department of Library and Information Science, Mizoram University, Aizawl, India

Abstract The purpose of the study is to analyze the library websites of Indian Institutes of

Technology (IITs) through webometric indicators including URL analysis, Web Impact

Factor (WIF) calculation, link pattern analysis as well as file formats analysis. The survey was conducted for all IITs library websites for three rounds having the gap of

fifteen days in each round. Search engine “Google” has been found suitable for the

survey due to its capability to support webometrics search expressions. Very low WIF has been found for all the IITs library websites. Linking pattern amongst IITs library websites

is also found very poor. The study is oriented mainly to webometric analysis of library websites. The problems and solutions have been suggested for the increase of web

presence of IITs library websites.

Abstract The paper aims to look at the Young Adult Public Library (YAPL) users’ opinion towards

collection of public libraries in Karnataka. A well thought-out questionnaire was

administered to gather data by using random sampling method and collected data were analyzed with the help of SPSS version 16. The key findings of the current study are;

Majority of the respondents numbering 775 (75.9%) are male, nearly 457 (44.8%) users are UG degree holders, majority scoring 852 (83.4%) of users were unmarried. Users

have a good opinion about the print collections like reference and educational books and

they are also satisfied with general magazines. Users are not satisfied with non-print collections of the library. So public library needs to concentrate on build up non-print

collections to serve the users effectively.

Abstract Very large amounts of data are being generated due to digital technologies and online

activities. Traditional database solutions, which were used as intelligent tools to handle

small data, are ineffective in handling the present day big data which has the

characteristics of high volume, velocity and variety. Big data analytic tools are employed

to get useful insights out of big data. There are some open source big data analytic tools

which can be used by librarians for various operations and studies in library environment.

Some possible areas include user studies, research, bibliometric studies, searching etc.
