Spanish Language Safety & Health Resources

Just for Fun

• Puerto Rico has been part of the US since 1898– (Captured during the Spanish-American War)

• Since 1917 Puertorricans have been US citizens by birth

Challenge: Language Barrier

Hispanics from different countries, or even different regions of the same country, often have slight differences in dialects (name of industrial equipment).

Language Barrier

• Tex Mex versus Spanish

– Tex Mex adopted English terms in their vocabulary. They may have difficulty reading correct Spanish

– Many Hispanic workers use slang (Anglicism) in their vocabulary (especially names of machines and technical terms)

Language Barrier

• What is a normal word in one Hispanic country could be obscene in another

• Example: the word for “Cake” in Puerto Rico means something else in Mexico!

– It can be VERY embarrassing

Language Barrier

• Cannot translate literally from English to Spanish

• Some words have more than one meaning– Example: Seguridad means Safety– But it also means Security
