Northern Road Upgrade CompleteMotorists can now benefi t from safer travel on the Northern
Road at Cranebrook with work completed on a major upgrade which aims to improve access to the Jordan Springs development.
Stuart Ayres said the Northern Road was upgraded from two lanes to a four lane divided road from north of Andrews Road to north of the Borrowdale Way intersection.
“The improvement work which started in 2013 aims to reduce crash risk after 39 people were injured in 47 crashes in the fi ve years to 1 July 2012,” Stuart Ayres said.
Stuart Ayres said Lend Lease carried out the upgrade on behalf of the NSW Government as part of the Jordan Springs urban development project.
“The Penrith region is a growing community with new residential suburbs and employment districts and upgrading Northern Road is vital to accommodate future traffi c increases.
“The 1.9 kilometre road upgrade also included new pedestrian and cyclist facilities, new traffi c lights, street lighting, noise barriers and concrete retaining walls.
“A wider, safer Northern Road will improve travel times for all road users between Windsor and the M4 and to Penrith, Cranebrook and new residences at Jordan Springs,” Stuart Ayres said. Road users are thanked for their patience while this work was carried out.

Well Winter has arrived. Time to pull out your winter
woollies, rug up and keep warm as the aroma of fresh home-made soup wafts through the home.
This month, our cover story details the completion of the Northern Rd upgrade, while page 7 centres around a very unique invasion, of another kind!
It is without doubt that there is a strong sense of community in this special place we call home. Only last month I witnessed a resident ‘Paying It Forward’ at a local business.
Something entirely unexpected by the recipient, but a true act of kindness. Not only did it warm the heart of the lucky recipient, but all those that witnessed this amazing gesture.
Share your ‘Pay It Forward’ stories with us! Email: [email protected]
This month we have ‘The Best Hot Chocolate’ in ‘What’s Cooking’ on page 8; it’s bound to keep the winter chills at bay.
Remember, ‘The grass isn’t greener on the other side, it’s greener where you water it!’

Penrith On The World StagePenrith has been put on the world stage as a movie-
making destination after the release of Mad Max: Fury Road which used the Penrith Lakes sand mines as a location for thrilling car chase scenes.
NSW Minister for the Arts, Troy Grant, said the NSW Government had played a key role to ensure fi lming of the biggest movie produced in Australia could take place at Penrith Lakes.
“Screen NSW worked closely with the production company to secure Penrith Lakes and another Western Sydney site, Potts Hill at Bankstown, as fi lming locations for Fury Road,” Mr Grant said.
“Fury Road has generated $80 million in production expenditure and hundreds of jobs for the State, and further boosted Sydney’s reputation as Australia’s number one movie-making destination.”
Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said that Penrith is emerging as a location for major screen and television productions in NSW.
“Having more fi lm production in Sydney’s West is helping to create new jobs and boost the local economy, as well as raising the profi le of our community to national and international audiences.
“People from the West know what we have to off er and through opportunities like these fi lms so will people around the world.
“The NSW Government is committed to strengthening the arts in Western Sydney, we made that clear throughout the election. With that focus from government we can expect to see more and more jobs come in the arts space.”

Since time began and humans emerged onto the scene there has been the desire for peaceful and prosperous living. This is driven in particular by the fact that the family has always played a pivotal role. Wars and disaster, human failures often determined by greed are but a few factors that mitigate the achievement of that desire. But through
it all the family has remained a constant. No matter what religion or philosophy all essentially are governed in the end result by addressing the fact of the family being the core of any given society.
Marriage then arose because without it the family would not exist. A simple given in any discussion on the subject because essentially everyone desires peaceful and prosperous living in particular for their children.
So what is marriage? A simple question but one that requires serious consideration. There is so much breakdown in marriage; divorce, separation, domestic violence, in which sadly it is not only the individual that is hurt but also the children of the broken marriage. That is why in the marriage service is the statement; ‘marriage is not to be entered into lightly or unadvisedly’. This is because the individual enters into a life time of sharing each taking the vow to love, comfort and to honour until death separates.
It is marriage down through the years that has regulated life because the fruit of marriage is children to which parents are then drawn into a loving responsibility to create a promising
environment to develop the best in their children. When the child often fails, particularly in the teen ages, it is the marriage bond that provides strength to the parents to continually see the potential for good in the child. This can be a real test in which the meaning of love takes on new dimensions.
It is marriage that has provided in every society, in every race of humanity, the reason for society to exist. The poet once said “no man is an island”. The family as the core of society looks to society to achieve the desire for a peaceful and prosperous life. Politics plays its part.
Government has that responsibility. But here again history sadly records that over and over again power politics can be very destructive.
There is at present a debate about the definition of marriage although one suspects not many are paying attention. The discussions are not unimportant because marriage itself whatever is determined remains the constant in society and that what effects the children [the major outcome of marriage] ensures the viability of society at large. That is why it is argued that marriage is the loving bond established between a man and a woman which they share ‘for better for worse, for richer or poorer, in sickness and health, to love and to cherish until death parts’

An invasion of a different kind recently took place in Jordan Springs, with local resident Michelle Kirk, waking to two separate gnome invasions at her residence. The first invasion involved 12 garden gnomes, whilst the second involved 72.
Dumbfounded as to why the gnomes chose to turn up twice in her front yard, Michelle soon found out that she was on the receiving end of an elaborate prank, instigated by friend and resident “Gnomer” Callan Wilkins.
Although the person for the first gnome invasion has not come forward, the second was undertaken by Callan, and involved purchasing garden gnomes from nearby hardware stores and placing them in Michelle’s front yard in the still of the night whilst everyone was asleep.
The Jordan Springs Gazette is sure to be hot on the heels of any gnome adventures in the future.

Fish & ChipsCapable Cooks • Time 1 hour 50 min • Serves 4
Ingredients • 1 Cup (150g) Plain Flour, Plus Extra to Dust• 1 1/3 Cups (330ml) Good-Quality Beer (Lager), Chilled• 4 Large Floury Potatoes (Such as King Edward, Russet), Peeled• 12 (About 50g Each) Flathead Fillets• Sunfl ower Oil, for Deep-Frying• Lemon Wedges & Tartare Sauce, to Serve
Method1. Place the fl our, 1 teaspoon sea salt and some freshly cracked black pepper
into a large bowl, and make a well in the centre. Slowly start pouring the beer into the well, whisking to combine, until all the beer is added and a smooth batter forms. Strain batter through a fi ne sieve to remove any small lumps of fl our. Place in the fridge for 1 hour.
2. Dry the potatoes with kitchen paper and cut lengthways into chips about 1cm-thick. Half fi ll a deep-fryer or large heavy-based saucepan with oil and heat to 160°C. (If you don't have a deep-fryer thermometer, test a cube of bread - it will turn golden in 30 seconds if the oil is hot enough.) Fry chips in batches for 5-7 minutes or until soft but still pale, then drain. The chips can be prepared to this stage ahead of time.
3. Preheat oven to 170°C. When you are ready to cook the fi sh, increase the temperature of the oil to 190°C (a cube of bread will turn golden in 15 seconds). Fry chips again, in batches, for a further 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden. Drain on kitchen paper. Keep warm in the oven.
4. Maintain the oil temperature at 190°C. Dust the fl athead fi llets in the extra fl our. Dip into batter, one at a time, allowing excess to drain off . Carefully place into the hot oil. Depending on the size of your fryer, cook fi sh in batches. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crisp, then drain on kitchen paper.
5. Remove chips from oven. Sprinkle fi sh and chips with salt. Serve with wedges of lemon and tartare sauce.

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Student – Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood ServicesPh: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
‘Resilience’ is a Bit of a Buzz Word These Days
We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is defi ned as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship.
The problem, I think, we have when talking about resilience is that we treat it as something separate to our parenting and teaching. We treat it as something separate that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. It is treated as something that we do to, or for, our children.
But really, resilience is learnt within environments through children feeling heard and feeling that they belong. Children learn coping skills in relationship with parents and teachers. They learn about feelings and how to manage them, from birth, in relationship with us. The most optimal environment is a positive one, in which parents and teachers regard themselves as guides and educators.
There is no point learning how to apply resilience in environments that are harsh, punitive, or unyielding, and having caregivers that shame children on a regular basis. It’s like applying a band aid to a gaping wound. For this reason, I think that parenting programmes like Circle of Security and Triple P are better programmes for promoting resilience in our children that any resilience programme available for children.
There has been a steady decline of resilience and mental health in young people over the past 3 decades. What I am increasingly fi nding in my work with children, is that they feel they cannot bring their struggles and problems to their parents. The message from parents to their children resoundingly is “build a bridge and get over it”, “stop being a drama queen/wuss/sook”, “suck it up princess”, or “man up”. Up to 90% of the children I work with feel they cannot talk to their parents, or when they do they are dismissed, rescued, punished, or ignored. The majority of Year 6 children I speak with, young people heading into high school and adolescence, feel their parents don’t listen to them. No wonder 1 in 4 of our young people will go on to develop clinical depression. In this ‘lucky’ country. Too sad.
As an Aboriginal woman said to me many years ago, “you can’t be a strong tree, if you don’t have strong roots”. So how do our children grow strong roots? Australian psychologist, Andrew Fuller, cites the research and advises that those children who are most resilient have been found to have three factors in their life (https://vimeo.com/43821184):
1. Feeling love, connection, and belonging within their family;
2. Having a few friendship groups, so that if they fall out with one group they can align themselves with another group;
3. Having an adult outside the family that likes them.Parenting is the most important factor in children’s resilience.
Children grow up in the context of family. I would like to see the resilience debate going forward as placing an emphasis on parents to learn positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to bear the responsibility for learning resilience skills. How are you creating an environment in which your children can grow strong roots?
More Parking For Penrith StationStuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that
construction is under way to provide 65 more commuter parking spaces at Penrith. The spaces, on Jane Street, will be converted from rail staff parking.
“These spaces are in addition to the 97 commuter spaces that were opened earlier this year on Lord Sheffi eld Circuit and the northern end of Jane Street,” Stuart Ayres said.
“This will bring the total number of new converted spaces available for Penrith commuters past 160, which is a big win for customers.
“From talking with the community, we know that a lack of parking around train stations is one of the big issues our customers face every day,” Stuart Ayres said.
The spaces are being provided as part of the NSW Government’s initiative to release rail staff car parking to customers at almost 100 locations across the state, Stuart Ayres said.
“This has been a successful initiative with more than 675 extra spaces already provided at over 60 locations across the state.”
At Penrith, improvements to this site will include fencing, asphalting, additional lighting and CCTV.
The parking spaces will be available to customers by the end of this year. This work is being delivered as part of the NSW Government’s Transport Access Program, delivering modern, safe and accessible transport infrastructure.
“The NSW Government is full steam ahead to deliver better quality public transport infrastructure for the people of Western Sydney,” Stuart Ayres said.
“Planning and investigation work continues to deliver a further 300 commuter spaces close to the station and in coming months we will be inviting the community to have their say on the major upgrade of Penrith Station and the bus interchange.
“Construction is due to commence later this year, with completion scheduled for 2018,” Stuart Ayres said.

It is amazing to realise that it is already halfway through Term 2! Henry Fulton PS is, as usual, a very exciting and busy place to be.
Our students have been involved in many varied activities including commemorating ANZAC Day; congratulating our Cross Country and Swimming
Carnival placegetters and champions; learning about road and bike safety at CARES; learning about recycling and caring for the environment; creating Claymation short fi lms and acknowledging our four School Captains at the Schools Leaders’ Mayoral Reception at Panthers.
Kindergarten also enjoyed their fi rst excursion to the Joan Sutherland Centre to watch a performance titled the ‘Incredible Book Eating Boy’.
Our four school dance groups are busy practising their routines in preparation for the Cranebrook Learning Community Performing Arts Festival and the Blue Mountains Nepean Performing Arts Festival.
Ten of our senior students will be attending a leadership camp and will have the opportunity to participate in activities to develop their leadership skills at the same time as developing a school action plan.
Stage 3 will be heading off to camp in mid-June enjoying themselves at the Great Aussie Bush Camp. The P&C also organised a wonderful Mothers’ Day Stall for our students to purchase lovely gifts for their Mums and are currently preparing for the school disco at the end of this term.
Our school sports teams have also been competing in Netball Gala Days, the Greg Alexander Shield and AFL competitions. Henry Fulton PS – what a great place to learn!Sharon Crowley, Relieving Principal Phone - 4730 4136 Fax - 4730 4160

Perhaps I can help you if you’ve been thinking:• We must reduce our loan repayments,• I wonder if we could consolidate some of our debts,• We really need some additional funds to renovate, install a pool or purchase that signifi cant item you’ve been trying so hard to save for (holiday?),• I’d love to be able to purchase an investment property.
Please pick up the phone and call me on 4732 5888 or 0423 661 196 for a free no obligation assessment of your current situation and borrowing capacity. Just think about what you could do with a spare $500 cash each month? A lot no doubt! Don’t just think about it, let’s see if we can fi nd it for you!
I look forward to hearing from you.Matthew Townley-Jones

An exciting, new and revolutionary game has just been released in Australia, and it’s already got tails wagging. “Why Revolutionary” you say? Even before you strip off the packaging you’ll notice some of the Design and Quality reasons ‘why’.
HorsePLAY has been created by some proud Aussies doing what Aussies do best – take on the stuff ed shirts and seriously raising the bar on what we can expect from a ‘game’.
Whether you love action, challenges, to answer trivia, mime, draw, sing badly or well, HorsePLAY has something for everyone! And if you’re not into games or don’t have anyone handy to play with, don’t worry. HorsePLAY is great value for money as it is TWO of our favourite products in one – exciting adventure game PLUS veritable coff ee table book in a box.
There’s loads of entertainment options packed into this sexy elegant plastic game box. Portable, playable and durable that honourable trait of yesteryear of being Built to Last – is back!
No wonder HorsePLAY has just been awarded the Australian Top 100 Smart Products Award for 2015. What makes this game truly impressive is that it has only been released in the last few months and already it has won this prestigious award.
What a great name. As it name suggests, the game is based on all things fun and entertaining. Horses are hard wired to have some horseplay every day – now so can we.
A huge array of global talent, experts, artists and celebrities, has been harness together for our pleasure. And who’d have guessed featured in HorsePLAY is Mulgoa local Charlie Brister.
Charlie is indeed a colourful character who chose to study a Bachelor of Political, Social and Economic Science at Sydney University primarily because it’s “Hogwarts” - the sandstone buildings!
This beautiful adventure game includes works by artists such as Tim Flach, Robert Vavra, Sir Alfred Munnings, Sidney Nolan and Pablo Picasso. It is the fi rst time the Picasso estate has said yes to a Picasso image being included in a game before. A massive achievement in itself for this brilliant Aussie game.
The objective of the game is simple. The winner is the one with the most points at the end of the game time. Game time can be 10 minutes, 10 hours or 10 days! Whatever time you want. There are 385 adventure cards with over 1,200 fun experiences. That’s hours of memory making fun to be had solo or with others.
We invite you to have a look at the game teaser video and listen to the game song. You can download the song for FREE at www.horseplaygame.com. This singalong song was created by none other than Tony King, winner of the International Songwriter of Year Award.

The Conversation You Don’t Want to HaveLet’s start a conversation with people who are grieving, so
they don’t feel isolated and alone. Why is it so diffi cult to have a conversation with a grief stricken
person? It feels uncomfortable to talk about death because in some way we think that’ll bring it closer. Let’s encourage people to grieve the way they need to and support them through their grief rather than ignoring them or wanting them to feel better. This makes people feel crazy.
Do we not talk because of our own feelings and the things it triggers in us? Or is it that we don’t want to upset them? FYI you can’t make them any more upset than they already are but you can help them. Let them cry as long and as hard as they want, don’t expect them to stop because you feel uncomfortable.
Be compassionate, people need to work through their grief in order to create their new life without their loved one. It takes a lot of energy to work through emotions.
The trouble with grief is –You have to feel it to get through it. So, don’t feel that you’ll make it worse by talking to someone about their loved one. PLEASE talk to them, say their loved ones name and always remember that they’ll be touched by grief for the rest of their life.

7 Ways To Burn More Fat! Ready to burn your way to a leaner you? Dropping fat tends to be
a tedious process that’s slow and steady. There are, however, 7 ways to add an extra boost to your results. Keep reading to fi nd out how...
Boost Your Burn #1: Track Everything
Counting calories, weighing out food portions, and keeping tabs on how far and fast you run isn’t the most exciting thing to do. But if you want to burn more fat, you need to do it. Without tracking your intake and outtake, you will never be able to fi gure out the weaknesses in your fat-burning program.
Once you grow accustomed to keeping track, it becomes very rewarding when you have a good day. And since you live in the 21st century, tracking the amount of fat you consume and burn is made easier thanks to all sorts of electronic devices and apps. So make use of those that make the most sense to you and stay on top of your fat-burning game.
Boost Your Burn #2: Power Up with Protein
Every time you eat a meal, toss some protein in for good measure. Whether you go with lean chicken or beef, beans or lentil, or Greek yogurt, plugging protein into every meal helps your body stay full and fuelled. When you keep protein in your system, it’s much easier to say no to whatever unhealthy temptation comes your way.
Boost Your Burn #3: Eat and Work Out
You don’t want to gorge yourself on everything you can shove in your mouth before working out, but eating a bit beforehand can work wonders. With a protein-rich snack 90 minutes prior to working out, you’ll fi nd yourself to be more focused and better able to push your body harder and longer than usual, leading to faster fat burning success.
Boost Your Burn #4: Forget Your Weight
This may seem contrary to burning fat, but if you really want to turn up your body’s fat-burning potential, you’re going to need to ignore what the scale says. When the goal is burning fat and toning up, you’re going to want to add muscle, which weighs more than fat.
Boost Your Burn #5: Get Weighty
Since you read the last tip, you probably saw this one coming. If you want to burn more fat off your body, you need to hit the weights. That doesn’t mean you have to become a professional body builder or push yourself until you can bench press a small car. What it does mean is that you need to include weights and strength training in your routine a few days a week. If you’re new to lifting weights, reach out to me and I’ll assess your goals and get you on a program that’s just right for you.
Boost Your Burn #6: Go Green
It may seem like magic, but green tea is rumoured to aid in fat burning. Actually, the connection between drinking green tea and burning more calories is well documented in research.
Boost Your Burn #7: Change It Up
Been eating the same stuff and doing the same workout routine for a few months? Not seen any fat melt from your love handles lately? Then your body may be asking for some variety. Changing up your exercise routine on occasion will work your body in new ways, forcing it to respond with extra fat burn. So if your fat loss has plateaued, variety will get the burn heated up once again.
Bonus Tip! Want one more fat-burning method to get your body sleek and slim? Here it is: stop drinking fattening, sugary drinks! Whether your weakness is fl avoured coff ee with all the goodies, sweet tea, or beer, these drinks pile useless calories onto your body, forcing you to have to work even harder to burn fat. Avoid this dilemma by going with water.
Remember that the most eff ective fat burn comes as the result of a consistent and challenging exercise program. Call or email today to get started on an exercise program that will change your shape forever!
