“It brought us what we hoped but never expected” -- ‘It all started in 1983 in my own small garage. My car and tools had to move so I could stock my first motorcycle gear! My former employer decided to quit his company “Vrijetijd BV”. I bought his stock and started my own company: Jopa Racing Products.’

I bought a car and started to visit customers. These customers were located in the Netherlands and Germany; Many of them were customers of my old boss, but I also expanded my dealer network thanks to Herman Hoff’s connections. Herman helped me out quite a lot in those days. He was speaker at the bigger MX GP’s and knew quite a few people in this business. I visited almost all GP’s and tried to sell my products to local dealers. We travelled from Denmark to Switzerland and back to the Netherlands within a week, something which only a few people did in those days’. Johan and his wife Ine, enjoyed those days as their holidays.

‘We had no GPS or mobile phone, we needed to find our way with maps and directions of people. This took a lot of time, especially in big cities where we probably took many different routes to the same customer; you never knew where to start, because we were always depending on the directions of others’.

Crossing borders was different those days; ‘There was no European Union, so we needed to clear customs to get in or out a country. Sometimes we bribed the customs with a nice cap or something small, so we could take some samples with us across the border; Something that was actually prohibited’.

Once Johan sold many products to one of his clients. Johan got the message that this client couldn’t pay. ‘I Jumped in my car and took all our products back from his store; After packing the products into my van, I could hardly sit in it because it was stacked with products. Products were even under my seat, the passengers compartment and anywhere you could think of. Once I was at the border to get into the Netherlands, I had no papers ready and I had no idea what I’ve had taken with me. Let’s say I had a whole bit of luck there; I could clear the customs two days later for once.

Not only traveling was exciting; The MX GP’s were also a big adventure. One of the most memorable GP’s was the one of Rotenturm. It had probably the best atmosphere untill a group of men visited the GP to tear it to the ground. Bottles, glass, chairs, tables; Everything was flying around. That was the end of the GP of Rotenturm.

‘I began labeling all my product with the “Jopa” label from the start. My former employer had his own brand, but I preferred to start my own to create something hon-orable myself. In that sense he could never take credit for my hard work. It is nice to see your own brand back on the track, it still gives me a rush; my products are widely accepted by dealers and consumers’.

The company grew and Johan had to give up his great passion of moto-cross. ‘I finished third in my last year Dutch Enduro 4-Stroke Championship. I more or less stopped racing Enduro’s and Motocross competitions once I became too busy with my own company’.

‘My garage became too small at some point, which led me to the decision to buy an old office from a former bank in the center of the village Enter. From our new building we started to sell more and more motorcycle clothing. This led to the idea to make our own. Around 1988/1989 I hired a few sewers to sew my own brand. I started together with my sister in law. Later my wife Ine joined’. Ine started to lead the sewing studio. ‘Ine is incredibly creative with fabrics and sewing, she enjoys every bit of it. She just started working with patterns and cutting without even following any education!’

Ine was working at a local supermarket and finished her job at 4 PM. After that she was still able to help Johan with his new passion: Jopa Racing Products!To indicate how fanatical they were as a couple: For the TT Assen GP we needed to

deliver 6000 caps. In the days before the GP, Ine pressed 130 caps an hour to finish them on-time.

‘As we grew steadily, we hired some sales representatives. Through my connections I became aware of the brands Sidi and AGV, which I start importing for the Netherlands and Germany. We became bigger and bigger once we had the Sidi and AGV brands; These big steps resulted in a lack of space. Each corner of the building was used; the studio was in the basement and we build an extension where we stacked some more helmets. We even had a little photo studio in our central heating room. The old safe suited perfectly for carton boxes to send packages. Due the lack of space we decided to open a second warehouse in Germany. On this location we could have a bigger stock, which was an big advantage buying Sidi and AGV products.’ The production of the Jopa clothing brand grew steadily as well; ‘In our best days we even had 12 sewers.’

To promote the brand Jopa we decided to sponsor the “Normaal” team, a group of motocross riders with Bennie Jolink, a Dutch celebrity. ‘We had a lot of champions in the side-car championship such as the combination Wenninger/vd Wiel, whom reached a second place in the World-Championship. They were very loyal; At some point they could get better sponsor contracts, but they decided to stay with us. Hansi Bachtold, 4-time World Championship Side-Car cross, was also riding with our gear until he could get a better contract. We accepted his choice, but what’s great that he’s still wearing our gear now-a-days; He remained loyal!’ At this moment Jopa is among other riders, sponsoring Daniel Willemsen, 10-time World Champion Side-Car cross.

‘Jarno, one of the current sale representatives, works for me since he was eight years old.’ Jarno is the son of the hired accountant and back in the days often joined his father to his work. ‘An instant click between me and Jarno resulted in a cooperation that still exists today; Jarno never left! He packed stickers for us and tried to sell it to our customers. He insisted to join me at fairs and events and always tried to sell posters. When I was in a meeting with customers he always waited in the living room until he couldn’t wait anymore; the garage door opened and he joined and tried to sell products to our customers. He couldn’t sit still!’

‘Another person we will never forget is “Robje”, our neighbors their son.’ He became Chief Paper Shredding, one of the ‘most important’ tasks within the company. ‘The fun and coherence found in for example Rob and Jarno are illustrative for the fun which we like to have and to keep at Jopa.’

Five years ago Jopa moved into a new building. ‘This was 5 years later than expected, but some conflicts with the local municipality kept us from expanding. But it was all worth it. We finally have more space and to work much more convenient and economic.

‘Despite all successes I personally had some troubles with my health. Problems with my stomach kept me from leading Jopa. Nowadays it is getting better.’ Despite this problem, the company grew steadily. ‘We were always able to pay everyone on-time; Employees and our import brands, mainly by working hard, being economic, but mostly by believing in what we are doing. Working 80-100 hours a week to do what we like the most; to sell our products!’

‘Ine has a big role in the success of Jopa. She was always standing by and always stimulated me continuing my passion. Always a nice dinner after a hard day of work-ing, I never had to do dishes, do the garden or anything; I only needed to mow the lawn, because it was too hard to handle for her. Not only Ine, but my employees play a big role too.’ Their commitment together with riders and relations whom always sup-ported the company, helped Jopa reaching their 30th year anniversary. ‘We expanded step by step with loyal brand such as Sidi, which we distribute for almost 25 years now and AGV, which we have distributed for 16 years. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would have done it exactly the same. It has been a long time and I hope tolead the company for many years to come.’

‘We hope to stay healthy in the future and continue what we do. It brought us what we hoped but never expected!’

craftmanshipin-house production ensuring high-qualityMany people don’t know that Jopa produces all MX and BMX Gear in their own studio in Enter, the Netherlands. Each day our team commits itself to test, develop and create the most durable clothing on the market.

We can only maintain this high quality by keeping the production in-house, which is an unique fact in this low-cost production era. The efficiency and expertise of our team allow us to create the most durable clothing while keeping it affordable.

Fabrics

We have a large stock of different fabrics and colors for all kind of products.

Cutting

The fabric is cutted in-house with precision to maintain our gears’ fit.

Product Development

All our patterns and products are created in-house giving us the possibility to adjust and improve products continuously.

sublimating

The print and fabric are joined together at our heat-press.We press the print (color) directly into the fabric, creating bright and durable colors.

Non-sublimated parts

All zippers, elastics and kevlar pieces are collected to prepare the product for the final stage.

printing

All graphics are printed in actual size and by order, giving us many possibilities for teamwear. We can put your name and number directly on your jersey if needed.

Sewing

Each and every sew and stitch is put by our commited team.

Finalized product

The final product can be found on the MX or BMX track, we have a few testriders that test our new products before we take them in production.

Ready for sewing

A product is complete and ready to be sewn.

Jopa MX

It’s possible to print your own name and number directly into the Jersey (Sublimation). Jopa does not use any stickers to customize your Jersey.

The ‘Rain’ jersey is made of a special water- and windproof fabric. The jersey has the same sublimated prints and fit as a regular MX/BMX Jersey, but keeps you dry in rough weather conditions.

Optional fitted with a Leattbrace Collar and your own name and number.

The ‘Light’ version of our MX pants specially developed for BMX, made from a strong lightweight fabric and Cordura.

BMX Pants

MX pants with the print directly sublimated in the fabric guarantee-ing you the brightest colors. Made of Cordura, Stretch materials and Kevlar.

MX jerseys with the print directly sublimated in the fabric guarantee-ing you the brightest colors. 100% made of Coolplus.

Optional fitted with a Leattbrace Collar and your own name and number.

step 1Before taking shape, each Airoh helmet is developed for a long time by the Airoh Staff together with the industrial designer and carefully studied as well in the planning phase and selection of the materials. The first samples are made on the operational feedbacks coming from our testers and professional riders, who are entrusted with the task of evaluate every feature of our helmets, wearing them on the racetrack and in their daily commutes. Their always precious ratings allow the company to re-calibrate and improve the performances of its final products.

step 2Each Airoh helmet is tested in the wind tunnel by highly specialized technicians, who evaluate their aerodynamics according to specific benchmarks, in order to characterize them with the maximum internal ventilation and ergonomics degrees ever.

step 3The outer shells of the Airoh helmets in thermoplastic take shape through a so-phisticated fusion process, which perfectly combine a set of polymers of poly-carbonate in special injection molds; the models in carbon fiber and Kevlar are instead the final outcome of a meticulous handmade process stratified as per the Multi Axial system. The inner EPS of our products is obtained through a steammolding process at high temperatures. The Airoh visors are printed and then treated with scratch resistant processes.

step 4The outer shell of every Airoh helmet is painted and treated with a UV filter for ful-filling the highest standards of quality and design, in the complete respect of the environment: endurance, durability and colour luster are guaranteed over time. The graphics of the outer shells are made by the manual application of decals, through a scrupulous and careful process able to give to any Airoh helmet the unique design that sets it apart. The latest-generation inner fabrics are highly tran-spiring and sewn by experts, as proof of the great attention that the enterprise has always paid to quality.

step 5At the main Locatelli S.p.A. factory is placed the accurate assembly of the parts which make up an Airoh helmet. Before and during this process, completely ex-ecuted by hand by skilled personnel, each component is meticulously controlled and possibly discarded if presents even the slightest imperfection.

Energy reduction - Most neck braces rest on your shoulders which means that upon impact, the pressure is directed to a small area. Often your collarbone and sternum suffer the brunt during impact. Energy Transfer - Upon impact, the top plate of the brace starts to slow down and reduce the energy. The Corax Jacket series have been studied to defend from collisions the spinal column, the top-limbs and to give a good kidney support to the adult/junior. These items are provided with back and top-limbs guards that offer a great advantage: The user can perfectly regulate them according to its own sizes, thanks to a Velcro-elastics regulation system. The chest guards have been realized with an innovative material, the Elastollan 660 DU, very resistant from bumps, twisting and abrasion.

The polyurethane plates are splinterproof in cases of blows or crashes; thenumber of plates is variable according to the zone to protect and to thelength of the user.

The structure underneath the plates has a Memory System of Cells which guarantees high shock absorption level. The plates are joined to a drop a wire system which guarantees the impact distribution throughout the whole protec-tion surface. The coupled material of P.E. + tissue, which is support of the protective system, is soft, Transpiring and Anti-Bacterial. The lumbar belt waist closing with its double elastic regulation system is excellent and comfortable.

The back protector is comfortable becaue it follows and satisfies the naturalforward movement of the spinal column, limits the reward twisting and givesan excellent protection.

Jopa is for many years known for their MX brand ‘Jopa MX’. What most people don’t know is that this clothing is completely produced in the Netherlands, creating a lot of possibilities for teamwear. We travel to Enter, a little village in the east of the Netherlands, where in 1983 a new company was founded with passion..

Jopa, a name that comes from the first two letters of the first- and sur-name of the owner Johan Paus, founds his company in the garage that is attached to his house in 1983. By importing small and starting brand such as Sidi, he was able to create a dealer network throughout the country.

Johan himself was also a motocross rider and quickly saw a growing market in moto-cross clothing. Therefore he started the production of his own clothing. The bright and cool colors were a big hit back in the days, which helped Jopa gain market. The brand still exists today and is working hard to re-life the old days.

In the meantime Jopa has grown steadily and is now housed in a 6000square meter building, just 2 kilometers from the old garage, where Jopa also functions as whole-saler of the brands Sidi, Airoh and Furygan. The building also houses the production facilities of the MX brand and Jopa Teamwear.

We speak with Ryan, responsible for customer-service and the production, about how the Jopa MX and teamwear facility works. “Teamwear customers come here through various ways. Most of the orders come through our representatives, our website or through our steady customer base. We have a large network of clients that come back every year to get their hands on the new collection. They like to have an update of their own jersey or they prefer something completely new. The collection we develop here in-house is created with our own branding-style combined with the latest trends in the market. We also look at what has sold well before or what teams like to wear. It

may happen that none of the colors we offer appeals to the team; Then we can easily adjust it! We can also design a completely custom design to the requirements of our customer. This does not stop by making a custom jersey design, which is the case at many other brands, but we can also add custom pants and jackets if required. If a team wants, we also deliver it’s team wear or free time clothing, flags and banners, the possibilities are enormous.”

Marco, once also an active motocross rider, makes all the designs for the clients. “We create the designs as best-fit to the customer needs and taste. They need to feel com-fortable wearing it. We have clients coming regularly to our studio, so we can create the design easily and quickly together. The best part is that we design for both teams and individual riders, creating a lot of variation in needs. I can honestly say that its really rare that we cannot help a customer. Many teams struggle with the fact that they are stuck to the mass-produced pants of the big brands. It’s not rare to see a team wearing a jersey that mismatches their pants, which I personally think is sad. That makes us different; We can make that matching gear, we can adjust pants, jackets..., anything! And we’re not stuck to big quantities, we even can produce one-piece only if needed.”

“That brings me to another advantage!” Says Ryan. “It gives us the possibility to de-liver an additional pant, jacket or jersey afterwards, a problem many BMX clubs strug-gled with. We not only produce MX, but also BMX gear. BMX clubs love our advantage; They regularly get a new member who needs a club-outfit quickly.”

It has been told shortly, but Jopa also develops its own collection, how does that work? “We primarily look towards the color-use and the styles of the moment” Says Marco. “Like everyone in Europe, we look at the USA, where Motocross is at its best. But logically we also look at our own markets, the Netherlands and Germany, where most of our riders go ride every weekend.”

“Due our production is literally around the corner, and not in the Middle East, we can start relatively late with the development of our gear for next year. This gives us the possibility to spot the latest trends and create unique styles, an advantage no one has. Many brands determine their collection for next year before the current collection is even in the shops. That’s also an advantage for our customers; They don’t need to pre-order at the moment the current collection needs to be sold, not knowing if it will sell well or not. Once the sea-son is half-way, we start with our development. We do plan big things ahead, but most of it is done in a short time-span. This is our big advantage as small organization and we’d like to use it as much as possible. Each year we improve and add products on different levels, keeping up with the competition.”

“Once the collection is ready, we produce it and we make photos in our own photostudio! Yes,” Ryan laughs”, we have that in-house too! We also produce in short notice our own catalog and do a photoshoot on the track. We have all qualities and facilities here at Jopa, helping us to do things fast.”

But how does this production process works exactly? “We create all designs digitally in the original size. These designs are printed on our huge printer in the space next to this office. If something appear to be wrong in the print, we can adjust it directly before we have a finished product. This helps us preventing from any failures but also a longer delivery time for our customer.”

“In the mean time we cut the patterns out of the fabric. The pattern differs with each product, just like the fabric itself. We collect all pieces for the needed product, of which a part goes to the printing office.”

“After printing, we put the pieces of fabric on the prints. The large paper roll will go straight into a heat-press with the fabrics placed on it. The heat ‘presses’ the color into the fabric. This pro-cess is called sublimation, what means that the color is really in the fabric, and does not lays on the fabric. This helps our colors to remain bright, even after time. The color does not peel off.”

“The fabric with print is ready, but we don’t have a finished product yet. All pieces need to be put together still. We do this in our own studio, where a few ladies put the pieces together to create an high quality pants. They ensure the product matches all our quality standards. For example, our MX-pants are triple stitched and we use a high quality Kevlar for our pants. It’s not without means half of the teams in the World Championship Sidecar Motocross racing are riding with our gear.”

“Once all products are finished, we send it to our customer who can be sure of a top-notch product. Depending on the time and amount of orders, we can deliver mostly within 3 weeks.”

“It’s actually a really simple process which we can perform quickly,” says Ryan. “We can offer our clients everything they want, something we are very proud of.”
