Chairman’s CommentsMany of our current supporters only know us for what we

are today. The model for our success was developed over time but the roots of the organization were planted in 1976. To help provide a better understanding of our organization we are reprinting an article that was written for our 30th anniversary in 2006:

As we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we are proud of our past accomplishments and are confident as we address the challenges of the future, which include increasing adoptions, increasing spay/neuters, expanding TNR programs, and decreasing the number of abandoned animals.

A critical new national effort exists to reduce and eventually eliminate the number of healthy and treatable animals that are euthanized in shelters. American Humane calls this, “Getting to Zero” with a goal of 25 years. As a no-kill shelter, the HHHA has been a leader in this movement, demonstrating that, with the right resources and with people willing to be responsible for their companion animals, euthanasia can be eliminated.

In the mid 1970s, Adkins and Eleanor Lowell, who had retired to Hilton Head from Short Hills, New Jersey, became dismayed about the proliferation of homeless dogs and cats in the area, many in obvious need of medical care. Eleanor vowed that, unless her husband and friends helped her develop an organization to handle stray and abandoned animals, she would leave the island. Thus, the Hilton Head Humane Association was born.

The HHHA was incorporated on June 21, 1976 with Adkins Lowell as President, Alvin Schlenker as Treasurer, Dawn Ladd as Secretary, and Bette Lee Valko as Corresponding Secretary. The Board of Directors consisted of an additional ten men and five women, including Eleanor Lowell. The declared purpose of the organization was prevention of cruelty to animals.

Over the 30 years, the HHHA has utilized these 2.4 acres to the fullest, with continuous development of facilities to provide healthy and safe living quarters for animals.

Population increases in Bluffton and Hilton Head have affected the HHHA. In 1979, when Hurricane David threatened, 36 animals were evacuated from the shelter. Today, there are

approximately 225 animals in the shelter’s care. The HHHA, supported by the community for thirty years, has saved tens of thousands of animals.

As Beaufort County evaluates the addition of a second government-controlled shelter, “South of the Broad”, we offer our support in helping them study no-kill shelters that respect the value of animal life while at the same time, enhance the stature of the community. The 20th Annual Dog WalkBy Franny Gerthoffer

The Dog Walk celebrates 20 years on Saturday,

April 29th! This favorite community event has brought together hundreds of animals and their owners over the years and its lasting power is a tribute to our animal loving community.

The event has proven that if you give Hilton Head Humane a sunny morning with people and their dogs on the beach a good time is inevitable!

Over the years we have played hundreds of contests, danced to just as many songs, raised a lot of money and most importantly found lasting homes for so many of our animals!

We are grateful to our sponsors and participants who have committed their support year after year and have brought their friends to join in the fun and fundraising!

In honor of our 20th anniversary, we invited 20 local celebrities to comment on the Hilton Head Humane Association and its effect on our community.

We hope to see you all on Saturday, April 29th at the Coligny Boardwalk/Beach beginning at 8:30am.

“I can’t wait for the Dog Walk so I can run on the beach with my fellow

four legged friends!”Jake The Salty Dog

Garfunkel’s DiaryENTRY 1.Dear Diary,

Today I was relocated to the Adoption Center so I could be the official adoptable “Office Cat”. While I am pleased to have a fancy title, I am more excited to have all this room to myself! Every morning and afternoon I get to run around without anyone telling me what to do. The staff even gives me rides around the Adoption Center in an office chair. I love being the center of attention!

ENTRY 2.Dear Diary,

Slept all day so that I could annoy the staff with fake incessant pleas for food even though I already ate twice. Maybe they did not notice I woke up for chow time?

ENTRY 3.Dear Diary,

I have been stalking an insect on the wall for the past three days now. All of my attempts to capture it have been thwarted. However today, on further inspection I have found out that the insect was in fact a thumb tack. There is no logic in this place.

ENTRY 4.Dear Diary,

The squirrel was back today. It mocks me from the window. I will try and release my mind from this torment and groom myself. For four hours. That will teach him to mess with Garfunkel!

ENTRY 5.Dear Diary,

I no longer want to be an Office Cat. I want to be a House Cat. There has got to be someone who loves snoozes, silky coats, food, snuggles, and did I mention I have experience in Microsoft Excel? Well not really, but I will help keep your keyboard warm. Garfunkel here looking for his Simon. Over and out!

Hazel is the sweetest and happiest girl you will ever meet. She was found abandoned in a ditch on the side of the road! Her ears were cut off and her skin was covered in sores and cuts. But, Hazel’s past did not affect her personality! From the beginning she always has been a happy go lucky pup! Thankfully she is all fixed up and ready to find a loving family of her own.

Zora came to the shelter in 2011 when her owner could no longer care for her because of her medical needs. Zora has severe skin allergies and she needs to be on medication and special food. Zora is 11 years old and she is looking for that special family who will love her even with her medical needs.

None of this is possible without animal lovers like you! We need your help! Please join us and

6 Hilton Head Humane Association

Are you looking for some company to sit with you when you read or watch TV? Look no further. DOLPHIN is your girl! Dolphin is a sweet, petite, tabby girl who came to us from another shelter. She was extremely shy when she first arrived, but over

time she has really started to blossom. She will come out of her kennel now and loves to be petted and have her chin scratched. Dolphin will even roll over and show you her belly! She has the softest fur and likes to play with the cat dancer (a piece of fleece on a stick) and loves her catnip! Dolphin would love to be in a home and seems to be fine with other cats. She would probably do best in a home without small children. Dolphin is a year and a half old and weighs 8 lbs.

This handsome boy is so mellow. COLT is a 6 year old tabby and he has the most interesting pattern in his coat. Along with the typical stripes, there are black spots all over him! Colt came to us when his owner’s circumstances changed. He would make

a great family cat as not much bothers him and he also gets along with other cats. He has been with us far too long and we can’t understand how this big, easy-going guy keeps getting over looked! At almost 19 pounds, he could stand to lose a couple pounds, but who couldn’t? Colt would fit into just about any home and you can’t say that about just any cat. Come see Colt and you will be mesmerized by his gorgeous green eyes!

PEPPO is a very handsome orange and white tabby and is a great conversationalist. Of course, the first thing he will say when you come to visit him is “Please take me home!” When you talk to him he talks back, but also listens and

he promises to be the keeper of all your secrets! Peppo is still pretty active at 7 years old! He likes to play and is very curious. This goofy orange guy is pretty laid back and would fit right in with any family. He really likes to be near you. Peppo is a little picky about his feline friends - he seems to prefer the ladies, rather than the gentlemen. He’s a tall, lanky fellow and weighs about 12 pounds.

CHOCULA is a beautiful Siamese mix who came to the shelter because her owner could not keep her. She has a beautiful coat - a rich chocolate brown with the tan Siamese highlights. Chocula is an independent lady and has

the typical Siamese personality. She is quite the talker and while she is not overly fond of other cats, she does ok with them. When you come to see her she will hypnotize you with her gorgeous blue eyes. Chocula is on a weight reduction program as she came in quite overweight. She is 7 years old and weighs 16 pounds and would do best in a house without small children.

A beautiful angel dressed in white, LILIL loves to be with you. This 10 year old beauty is so friendly and enjoys being brushed and petted. Lilil came in as a stray and seems so grateful for all the great care she is getting. Pet this green eyed girl and

she will give you head butts back. Lilil has an old injury to her right ear and it looks a little smaller than the left, but nobody is perfect! She is also diabetic, but her glucose is being well controlled with a low dose of insulin twice a day. Don’t let that stop you from adopting this beautiful soul - the shots are easy to give (we will teach you how) and we will also assist with the first month’s insulin.

Like her British counterpart, FERGIE is one sassy lady! This pretty, 4 year old brown and white tabby is very chatty and loves to play. She likes to jump up in your lap and give you some head butts for a few minutes and then she wants to play! She

loves to run and jump after toys on a string. Fergie has a very unique personality and is so comical! Her tail is very upright when she runs around and she has a cute little snort at times when she’s playing. She promises to keep you constantly entertained and make you smile every day!

Are you looking for a wonderful dog? This 5 year old, 54 pound beauty is a staff favorite! CINNA is such a gentle girl and would be a great family dog. She wiggles with delight when she meets you and loves everyone! Cinna is very good on a

leash and is crate trained. She is very eager to please and will gently take a treat from your hand. Cinna likes other dogs and would do very well in almost any home. She is ready to make your home complete!

Do you need a beach buddy who loves to chase balls on the beach? Then CLYDE is the dog for you! If you look up the word retriever in the dictionary, you will see a picture of Clyde! You would never believe this guy is 9 years old.

He runs and plays and still has lots of energy! Clyde is also very sweet and takes treats gently from your hand. He loves to ride in the car and is ok with cats. Clyde likes other dogs, but does not like to share his ball with them, so a home where he is the only dog, or he is with a submissive dog would probably be best for Clyde.

True to his name, SHARPIE is one sharp looking dog and he is also very sharp mentally! He is so smart, and is learning all kinds of things in training class. Sharpie loves to play and walks very well with a gentle leader harness. He

gets along well with other dogs, but does not like cats. Sharpie is 2 years old, weighs 45 pounds and would be a great addition to any home.

JASMINA is all about her people! She loves to be with you and is so eager to please. This 37 pound girl is 6 years old. Jasmina loves car rides and is doing very well in training class. She is a very smart girl and is good on a leash. Jasmina

loves playing and would fit into most households. She does not like cats and is a little selective about her canine friends, but she promises to be a loyal, loving member of your family and she will love you forever!

KANTI is a lovely tri-colored hound. She is great with other dogs and loves to ride in the car. Kanti is a little shy when she first meets you, but rub her velvety ears and she will quickly be your friend! She enjoys being out and about and

would make a wonderful addition to any family. Kanti weighs 39 pounds, is 9 years old and has beautiful, soulful eyes.

Do you want a dog that enjoys sitting in your lap? LITTLE MAN is your guy! This chocolate and cream little chihuahua mix came to us from Beaufort County where he was surrendered by his owner. Little Man is 15 years old and was very overweight

when he came to us and he has very few teeth, but despite some health issues, he loves to be with people and he’s very alert. He loves to give kisses, too! This little old guy deserves a nice place to live out his golden years - could that be with you?
