Innovations

The Big Easy, and Worth ItFor TechLearn 2019, we’ve lined up a roster of experts who consistently harness today’s evolving technologies with great success. They create meaningful, memorable, and motivational learning experiences that make a difference. And they’ve pledged to share how they make their magic happen under realistic constraints. So you can, too. In truth, it’s definitely not as hard to develop great learning experiences as it can appear. So let’s learn what’s essential and what’s not. Let’s make it “as easy as possible,” but please, “not easier.” As professionals, let’s commit to making great learning happen. Every time.

Michael Allen, TechLearn’s

Chief Learning Evangelist

What If?When I was a little girl, we used to play a game called “What If?” “What if we had a million dollars? What if we made the rules?” I encourage you to bring your training “what ifs?” to our TechLearn 2019 Conference, where we’ll help you turn them into reality. You’ll learn from experts in the trenches who are using evolving technologies to design, develop, deliver, and implement engaging, impactful, measurable training. And then you’ll roll up your sleeves and try them out for yourself. What if we could transform training? We can! Join us in New Orleans, and we’ll show you how.

Lorri Freifeld, Editor-in-Chief,

General SessionsFIND SOLUTIONS in interactive general sessions where you’ll be challenged to think differently about learning.

Michael Allen, eLearning Industry Pioneer; TechLearn’s Chief Learning Evangelist

Wow! You Can Do That?Yes, you can! Today’s technologies are breaking down barriers with blinding speed. How can we keep up? And how do we avoid letting seductive novelties divert our attention from instructional foundations that matter? We’ll have fun seeing and playing with some new things. And then figure out how to put the new technologies to work for us.

Lou Tedrick, VP of Global Learning & Development, Verizon Wireless

Transforming Learning at VerizonA recent study found that 91% of Learning and Development professionals believe new approaches to learning and new technologies are needed. Enter virtual reality, which has drastically improved the way individuals learn and retain information. Lou Tedrick will share how Verizon is effectively applying virtual and augmented reality to in-store robbery training; on-the-job performance support; and mobile, bite-size learning.

Anders Ericsson, Author, Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise

Getting Better The world’s foremost authority on peak performance — the expert other experts turn to — psychologist Anders Ericsson offers a science-backed way to correct mistakes, overcome plateaus, adopt new skills, and achieve mastery in any field through his concept of deliberate, purposeful practice. With Anders, you’ll learn why experts aren’t born — and how they’re made.

Ulrik Juul Christensen, MD, Executive Chairman, Area9 Group

Teaching Employees Skills They Don’t Know They LackUnconscious incompetence can be found at every level in organizations. But how do we correct a competency gap no one sees? Ulrik Juul Christensen, a physician who studies cognition, biological variation, and how people learn, believes the solution is an adaptive learning model that combines the best of computer science and cognitive research to deliver exactly the learning each employee needs when they need it.

Questions such as these can help you think more creatively about the tools all around you. In this fast-paced, unpredictable session, our team of experts will use their knowledge, experience, and wit to pose solutions to crazy challenges you help create. You’ll never look at your tools — or your doorbell — the same way again!

Kickoff at NOLA Brewery: The United Nation's 2030 SDGs Game (Offsite Sunday at 5 pm)

Experience the 2030 SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Game, a multiplayer, in-person, card-based game that simulates taking the “real world” into the year 2030, has become a powerful social phenomenon and has been delivered at the United Nations! You’ll play and learn with hands-on gamified action, followed by a debrief, with a side of McClure’s BBBQ (the extra B is for beer).

Monday: You’re Not Playing Games with PlayAttempting to create imagination, innovation, and creativity for today’s learners while ensuring the information is stimulating, relevant, and engaging, is a daunting task. These 20-minute main stage presentations focus on design, innovation, and research for a new regime of gamification designers and facilitators.

Hands-On Learning LabsThe question isn’t if adults can learn from play, but what they learn. These labs focus on innovative ways of thinking and put fun and learning hand-in-hand with gameplay. By actively ‘doing,’ participants will get to experiment with trial and error, learn from their mistakes, and understand potential gaps between theory and practice.

Project ThrowdownThe GamiCon Gamification Project Throwdown Awards recognize excellence in gamification strategy, design, and implementation. You’ll explore a variety of projects and talk with the designers and developers, about the strategies, tools, and processes used to build them. (Application deadline, June 28, see https://gamicon.us/gamification-awards)

Thinking In & Out of the Box (Offsite Monday)

“Think out of the box!” A commonly heard phrase, but no one ever tells you what the box is, how to think out of it, and why you might want to think back into it. Join the creator of “The Box,” a thinking tool that has been used by more than 10,000 participants in 20 countries to improve creativity, empathy, results, and relationships. Plus, enjoy the quintessentially southern experience of Lula’s with appetizers and cocktails.

Tuesday: Formulas for SuccessGet a behind-the-scenes look as the speakers share their transition from ignorance to understanding of the application of gamification in real-world projects. These 20-minute presenta-tions focus on diverse implementations of gamification in L&D.

Gamification Design Build WorkshopIn this 1-hour intensive workshop, you will level up your design skills as you learn about gamification design methodologies, tools, and processes.

Lunch with CelebrityA 60-minute interactive discussion facilitated by a speaker/celebrity/expert of your choice.

iBeacons Ambassador AdventureThrough an interactive progress map, discovered via iBeacons, you will interact with the latest in platforms, applications, tools, games, and apps that the gamification industry has to offer. Think speed dating, but in the world of business and design.

Wrap with TechLearn 2019 KickoffOn Tuesday afternoon, GamiCon 2019 attendees will join in the opening of TechLearn 2019 with a keynote by Chief Learning Evangelist, Michael Allen, followed by a “Mission Possible” event which will end offsite at Barcadia for the GamiCon Throwdown Awards, appetizers, and drinks.

InnovationsCo-Located Event

With one of America's most innovative cities as your learning lab, this exclusive field trip (limited to 50) gives you insider-access to cutting-edge learning organizations throughout New Orleans — and guides you through facilitated creative debriefs to adapt and apply these innovations in your organization.

Kickoff: A Creative Walk into InnovationIf you want to disrupt training, you need to think differently. Innovation requires creative thinking. We will start by wandering into what creativity is — and the mindsets, skill sets, and toolsets needed to make innovation happen. Our first Innovation Chat is with Maxime Ros who shares his experiential learning journey from neurosurgeon to VR entrepreneur and the skills that helped him make this transition.

The Nature of Wine and LearningIn this multi-sensory tasting experience, discover how master sommeliers learn to understand wine, what’s happening in the brain when we taste and smell wine — and how this knowledge and expertise is transferred to others. Practice looking at, smelling, and tasting wines as the experts do — to better understand how the brain perceives and learns. A pop-up dinner and reception is included.

Designing With, Not ForWe visit the Small Center for Collaborative Design at Tulane’s School of Architecture, which brings together creative makers and doers. Learn how they advance community-driven ideas through collaboration, design, education, and scrappy problem-solving to accelerate innovation. In our next Innovation Chat, hear why KPMG has chosen to invest innovation dollars in designing a bricks-and-mortar center in Florida, and how its learner-centric design will foster not only learning, but co-creation, collaboration, innovation, and engagement.

Immersive TechLearn LabThe value and impact of immersive technology for learners is promising, yet can seem complicated, costly, and overwhelming. The key is understanding what skills are needed to develop and implement this type of technology, as well as how it fits into the future of training. Get hands-on with several examples of VR, AR, and other immersive tech from Samsung, Revinax, and others to experience the possibilities first hand!

Leadership Insights from a Police Officer, a Choreographer, and HorsesVisit the New Orleans Mounted Patrol for a demonstration of horse and officer training, followed by an interactive workshop on “physical listening,” strategic thinking, and problem solving with a choreographer whose dance company includes equine and human performers. These examples of interspecies communication will provide deep lessons in personal awareness, innovation, learning, and leadership.

Innovating Teamwork Using SimulationAt the multidisciplinary Ochsner Clinical Simulation and Patient Safety Center, experience how they apply high-fidelity human patient simulators to teach clinical skills to healthcare professionals in a safe, immersive environment, while promoting patient safety.

Changing Our Thinking: A Culinary Kick in the Seat of the PantsWe’ll not only visit Tulane’s Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine — the first teaching kitchen to be implemented at a medical school — but we’ll be cooking our dinner there! Discover how the center delivers hands-on culinary medicine training for medical students and the healthcare and foodservice industries. In this hands-on, team-oriented cooking class, we will be actively involved in preparing and sharing a delicious meal.

Applied Innovation Workshop: Prototyping the Future of LearningHow can you take the innovations you have learned about at IIT and apply them in your organization? Our next Innovation Chat explores how KPMG is moving beyond “one-size-fits-all” learning by defining five distinct personas within its 36,000-person workforce. Then, our facilitators will introduce us to role of personas in gamification and human-centered design, and guide us through a design thinking process to prototype a concrete solution that you can take back and apply.

Radical Brewing, Radical LearningUrban South Brewery will be our learning lab for our final brewery-side Innovation Chat about how to transfer expert and sensory knowl edge! Urban South’s founder and their in-house cicerone (like a beer sommelier) will be our guides. We will learn what makes sensory training different, taste beer, get a VIP tour of the brewery — and discover how all this can help us better innovate training! A pop-up lunch (and beer) is included, followed by a shuttle to the airport.

September 19 (5:30 pm) – 21 (1 pm) at sites throughout New Orleans

Fee: $995 when packaged with TechLearn. $1,195 to attend Innovations in Training ONLY. Includes transportation, two lunches, and two dinners.

P01 Interactivity and Instructional Design for eLearningEthan Edwards, Chief Instructional Strategist, Allen InteractionsCreating great eLearning depends on the combined power of instructional design and inter-activity design. Instructional design builds on what we know about how people learn to guide selec-tion of content, craft objectives, and master powerful delivery. Interactivity design guides us in crafting online experiences that motivate partici-pation, actively engage the learner’s mind, and create meaningful and memorable experiences. You’ll discover powerful ways to analyze content to establish appropriate scope for your eLearning, as well as strategies for content sequencing to maximize learner benefit and interest. Then, apply the powerful principles of instructional interactivity to design irresistible learner experiences. You’ll learn to:

• Create meaningful, instructional context.

• Manipulate risk and consequences to challenge learners.

• Break out of tedious question forms, instead focusing on meaningful behavioral outcomes.

• Employ feedback as a crucial teaching vehicle.

• Apply simple design elements to transform learner motivation.

• Develop interactivity design ideas through sketching and prototyping.

Based on the industry-leading ideas from Michael Allen’s Guide to eLearning, this program will fundamentally change the way you perceive the design and development of eLearning, and the possibilities for success!

BYOD: A WiFi-enabled laptop with PowerPoint is required (or another authoring system such as Storyline or Captivate).

P02 Articulate Storyline FundamentalsDiane Elkins, Co-Founder, Artisan E-LearningArticulate Storyline is an easy-to-learn and easy-to-use eLearning authoring tool. This two-day program covers the very basics up to insider tips

and secrets that even experienced developers don’t know. You’ll learn the basics such as setting up a course and adding content to creating inter-actions and questions, all the way to advanced techniques such as working with conditions and variables. Whether you are a beginner just getting started, an intermediate use looking to pick up a few extra tricks, or someone just curious about the possibilities, this program is for you! You’ll learn to:

• Navigate the Articulate Storyline interface and customize the Articulate Player interface.

• Organize your projects with scenes and slides; work with text; import and format images; incorporate audio and video; build questions and animate slide content.

• Create your own graphics using built-in drawing tools.

• Create learner interactions with triggers, states, and actions.

• Add conditional actions and variables to create advanced interactions.

• Record your screen for software simulations.

• Publish your Storyline project for various delivery methods.

BONUS! Receive the book, E-Learning Uncovered: Articulate Storyline 360 (2nd Ed.).

BYOD: A WiFi-enabled laptop with Storyline installed is required. The program is designed in Storyline 360 (you can use Storyline 2, 3 or 360).

P03 Designing for Deeper Learning in the Virtual ClassroomKaren Hyder, Online Event Producer, Kaleidoscope Training and Consulting; Patti Shank, Founder, Learning Peaks (appearing virtually)You’ve seen online courses that are simply content dumps with quiz questions that attempt to “prove” learning happened. Research tells us that the most important element for meaningful learning experiences is the opportunity for participants to use what they are learning. To get people from content and to application, we need to design for deep learning, where people can learn, remember, AND apply what they are learning.

In this program, you’ll apply Patti’s deeper learning design to Karen’s 20 years of virtual classroom training, coaching, and production work. You’ll experiment with virtual classroom tools and resources to gain the skills YOU need to use the virtual classroom for deeper learning. You’ll use an analysis framework to determine if virtual classroom is the right modality, design effective questions, and script micro instructions. During the two days, you’ll also use the virtual classroom to prepare for success and to deal with common problems; remove barriers to learning; plan out your session using a storyboard; build on prior knowledge to create a foundation for learning; and keep people involved and moving forward. At the end of the course, you’ll know how to use the virtual classroom to get the results your participants and organization need most.

BYOD: A WiFi-enabled laptop with Adobe Connect pre-installed is required. Detailed pre-work will be sent upon registration.

P04 Developing Engaging Learning with Adobe Captivate, XD, Photoshop, and IllustratorJoe Ganci, Owner, eLearning JoeAdobe Captivate is a great tool for creating eLearning. We all know that the best eLearning approaches involve a story, scenarios which branch depending on the learner’s choices, and more. When you use the features of Adobe XD, Photoshop and Illustrator with Captivate, you can improve and streamline the whole process of anal-ysis, design, development, and evaluation all along the way. In doing so, you can make the process of including branched scenarios which revolve around a story much easier to realize. You do not need any experience in any of these applications to take this class. You’ll learn to:

• Build a story and interactive content.

• Design and storyboard branching scenarios in XD, Photoshop, and Illustrator.

• Incorporate the branched scenarios easily from XD.

• Create SVG images for easy scalability and smaller files.

• Assemble it all in Captivate with round-robin editing.

BYOD: A WiFi-enabled laptop pre-installed with the latest releases of Adobe Captivate, XD, Photoshop, and Illustrator is required to take advantage of the exercises in class. You’ll be given completed exercise files if you wish to observe without participating. You may download a 30-day free trial.
