The INTACH Logo, based on the anthropomorphic copper figure from Shahabad, Uttar Pradesh, belonging to the enigmatic Copper Hoards of the Ganga Valley

is the perceived brand image of INTACH. The classic simplicity and vitality of its lines makes it a striking example of primitive man’s creative genius. (circa 1800-1700 bc.)

INTACH’s mission to conserve heritage is based on the belief that living in harmony with heritage enhances the quality of life, and it is the duty of every citizen of India

as laid down in the Constitution of India.

The past year 2014-2015 has been a significant landmark year for your Trust. Together we were able to consolidate all the initiatives taken previously during the years 2012-2014. A major new initiative was the launching of INTACH Research Scholarships on many facets of our cultural heritage, as well as the INTACH Heritage Awards for Excellence in Documentation offered at a national level. Documentation is important in order to, understand, analyze and interpret historic structures to sensitize and inculcate heritage appreciation among people.

We are now on the way to becoming a knowledge based centre on heritage related subjects, building upon the experience gathered by conveners, professional members and INTACH Divisions over the last 30 years. I deeply appreciate the selfless contributions, you have made over the years and thank you and exhort you to continue to do your best in the times to come.

I also know that with the explosion in our activities both centrally & in the chapters, more & more members need to come forward to share the responsibilities in Chapters. Hence, Capacity Building courses for chapter members became essential, and we have started a three day workshop for chapter members, other than the conveners.

I would like to draw your attention to a path breaking passion project happening in the little known village of Jolpa in Jhalawar District of Rajasthan, with INTACH as the catalyst. Jolpa villagers have boldly and voluntarily decided to reclaim ownership of a 13th century temple lying in a derelict state without care or ownership of the ASI State Archaeology Department. The villagers raised the funds themselves, and INTACH is providing the technical assistance. We have become their “INTACH Bandhu” – and I am sure there are ample opportunities to replicate such an inspirational example across the country.

There is another critical area which needs our attention, the up-liftment of skilled crafts persons who reside in the inner cores of towns and villages of India in very poor conditions. We need to fill this critical gap in our efforts to upgrade their skills and conditions. They are the repository of traditional knowledge and there is a need to protect them and their precious and creative cultural heritage as well. We must connect and dialogue with them so that their skills are preserved and deployed to produce contemporary designs and products that yield better livelihood opportunities.

We need to build upon partnerships and bring together like minded individuals and institutions, so as to generate greater synergy in INTACH’s efforts to conserve heritage and bring it to the forefront of the national agenda.

Wish you all a very successful 2016 in all your endeavors to take forward INTACH’s mission.

With best wishes, Maj. Gen. (Retd.) L.K. Gupta, avsm

MESSAGEM E M B E R S E C R E TA RY, I N TAC H

The activities of INTACH in 2014-15 continued to build up on the tempo which was generated in the year 2013-14 when INTACH was accorded a higher level of organizational responsibility with the infusion of funds for its Corpus in October, 2013.

In keeping with the needs of the time and challenges of heritage conser-vation, the activities, human resource support and infrastructure had to be expanded and brought to a professional level of functioning. Hence, systems had to be set and plenty of streamlining of procedures and functions had to be put in place to manage and handle a much larger organization.

An important aspect of the expansion has been the emphasis on training and capacity building for the community, government professionals and the Chapters. The INTACH Heritage Academy conducted many courses for sensitizing the PWD engineers in heritage conservation in the States of Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. The Chapters took great interest in conducting the Heritage Academy’s courses and the demand for such courses has been increasing. Similarly, the 3-days Orientation Training Programme for the new Chapter Conveners has been a great success as new Conveners go back to the Chapters with full understanding and knowledge of their functions. In order to build up the capacity in conservation, INTACH has announced 16 conservation scholarships for Indians in research and capacity building which will go a long way in building a team of conservationists and researchers.

As part of the outreach programme INTACH conducted an All India Inter College Heritage Quiz Series covering 16 cities which created great enthusiasm among the various colleges in the country. The quiz programme was telecast by Doordarshan and other colleges have also desired to participate in future programmes. The Heritage Education and Communications Services (HECS) continued to do commendable work with teachers, students and volunteers, relentlessly covering smaller district towns and areas and copiously producing heritage books, manuals and tool kits for schools.

Listing and Documentation have remained the core activities of INTACH and a Listing Cell has been set up with a team comprising the Divisions which do listing and documentation. A committee known as (Technical Advisory Committee for Listing) TAC-L has been set up with a clear mandate to see that there is proper standardization and quality control in the listings which INTACH does. This Cell also functions as a guide to the Chapters by advising them on proper formats to be followed and to maintain good quality of listing. An important documentation programme of Cultural Mapping of Communities was taken up by Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) Division with the Chapters of Dahanu, Rajpipla and Jharkhand on the mapping of the Worli, Bhil and Santhal tribes. Work on the cultural mapping of the Gujjar, Kanuora and some tribes of Nagaland is progressing well. In order to build the capacity of Chapters in documenting intangible cultural heritage, a State Level Documentation Workshop was conducted in Madurai and Tamil Nadu where a large number

of Chapters participated from Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Puducherry.

The new government has provided focus on urban heritage conservation by announcing a scheme known as Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) covering 12 cities to be upgraded around its core heritage essence. Seizing the opportunity, INTACH took the initiative of holding a workshop and invited the Ministry of Urban Development and the National Institute of Urban Affairs (NIUA) in working out the specific heritage challenges and possible conservation solutions for the said cities. The workshop was attended by repre-sentatives of the local bodies from the 12 cities, certain District Magistrates and Municipal Commissioners and the INTACH Chapter Conveners of the concerned cities. This was a meeting of minds workshop which set the tone for local level initiative in the HRIDAY programmes. Subsequently, in June, 2015 INTACH was nominated as an anchor for the HRIDAY Programme for the cities of Varanasi, Gaya and Warangal.

The conservation project of Bassian Kothi for Punjab Government has been completed and a museum set up in the name of Maharaja Daleep Singh showcasing the heritage of Punjab along with landscaped gardens and activity areas for the community. The Punjab Government has set up a Management Committee to take care of the premises and to carry out cultural activities in and around the museum.

The Art Conservation Centres at Bangalore, Delhi and Bhubaneswar were up-graded and essential scientific equipments added. These centres were re-focused to carry on training and research activities besides the projects and conservation work of art and paintings.

Continuing with the Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture, the sixth memorial lecture was delivered by Prof. Madhav Gadgil, a renowned environmentalist. The lecture has been published by INTACH and is available to the general public. The INTACH Foundation Day was celebrated with a performance by the Dance Routes which incorporated the elements of Odishi and Gotipua. A large number of INTACH members participated in the Foundation Day celebrations and Founder Members present were felicitated on that day.

The INTACH Documentation Centre is undergoing a major overall to make it a technically competent and an accessible repository of heritage documentation in India. The Natural Heritage Division has become a nodal point for the documentation and conservation of water bodies, lakes, baolis and kunds and for various water issues. It has taken up the study of ‘Traditional Patterns of Weather Forecasting’ which gains great importance in these times of freak weather patterns as an effect of climate change.

INTACH is presently on a sound footing with a team of young Divisional Heads guided by the Executive Committee and the Governing Council. It is hoped that all the hard work that has been done by all the members and officials of INTACH will continue to bear fruits in the future and the message of heritage conservation gets deeply ingrained in the minds of the youth and the larger community.

I wish all the members a very happy and productive 2016.

Sixth Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture (April, 2014)The 6th Pupul Jayakar Memorial Lecture hosted by INTACH was delivered by Professor Madhav Gadgil on 18th April on the occasion of World Heritage Day. Professor Gadgil, in his lecture titled − ‘Revitalizing India’s Conservation Traditions’ spoke at length about the destruction of nature and people’s livelihood. He emphatically pointed out that scientific practices of nature conservation, in no way represent a real advance over the traditional folk knowledge based systems. The event was organized by the ICH division and a book − ‘Baiga,’ commissioned by the ICH division, was released on the occasion. INTACH Foundation DayINTACH celebrated its 30th year of existence. Foundation Day celebrations were observed by the head-office and many INTACH Chapters. On the occasion, the following publications were released: Tanjavur Marathas: Art, Architecture and Culture; A Momentous Journey: 30 Years of the Architectural Heritage Division; Conservation Manual for Traditional Building Repair in Ladakh Region; Baolis of Bundi; and The Compendium of Good Practices initiated by NIUA in Collaboration with INTACH. This was followed by a dance performance by Danceroutes.

Celebrating Literature The ICH division of INTACH in association with Creative Vistas presented a literary evening titled ‘Celebrating Literature’ on 11th October, 2014. Thespian Tom Alter presented an eclectic mix of English and Indian poetry. The verse of two outstanding poets of the 20th Century, T.S Eliot and Dylan Thomas, matching in brilliance and thought with that of our own poet laureates Mirza Ghalib and Mir Taqi Mir turned out to be an exhilarating treat for literature aficionados, especially fans of Urdu poetry.

One Beat − Music from the North East (March, 2015) The ICH division of INTACH was instrumental in organizing an event titled, ‘One Beat − Music from the North East’ on 20th March, 2015. The programme, in collaboration with the India International Centre (IIC), was brought to Delhi by the INTACH Nagaland Chapter. This was supported by Sangeet Natak Akademi and NEZCC, Nagaland.

Music as intangible culture is important to preserve for future generations, because these create a community’s identity and sense of belonging to a region, a tradition or a way of life. Keeping this intangible cultural value of the rich folk music from the North-East, the programme showcased musical performances by artists from Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.

INTACH ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15

Raja Ka Mahal, JaisalmerRaja Mahal built about 860 years ago is one of the most significant buildings of the Jaisalmer fort. The palace building has a unique construction style wherein the walls are built in dry masonry with huge sandstone blocks. The wall is wide at the base and narrows towards the top. The building shows many signs of ageing, wear and tear and weathering. Cracks have appeared as a result of earthquake and dry masonry construction. To address this, INTACH invited CINTEC engineers who proposed a structural strengthening scheme to prevent cracks in future and arrest widening of present cracks. The emergency retrofitting work which included tying the perpendicular exterior walls at the corner junction was executed in August 2013 and proposal for further conservation works has been prepared.

After completion of the emergency work, World Monument Fund has desired estimate for additional work. An investigation was carried out to evaluate the sub surface lithology up to a depth of 10 m at the proposed locations and to develop recommendations for foundation design. Work was conducted in the following phases.

Drilling of two boreholes at the designated locations to determine soil /rock condition and to obtain representative samples for laboratory testing. Testing of soil /rock samples in the laboratory to evaluate their index and engineering properties. Performing engineering analysis of all the field and laboratory data to arrive at safe bearing capacity. The investigation was followed by restoration work in selected areas which comprised replacing of wooden beams. Grouting and consolidation of masonry walls To inform about the conservation work, a geo-technical investigation and structural tests were carried out.

Conservation and Reuse Proposal of Chhatar Manzil, LucknowChhatar Manzil Complex, located in the heart of Lucknow sprawls over five acres and contains two monuments, Chhatar Manzil and Farhat Baksh. Farhat Baksh was built in 1781 AD by General Claude Martin as his residence. The Indo-French style building also

known as “Martin Villa” was later purchased by Nawab Asaf-ud-daula. In 1798 AD, under the patronage of Nawab Saadat Ali Khan, the highly embellished palace of Chhatar Manzil was constructed. The building was partially destroyed by British in 1857 and used as United Service Club for senior British officials. In 1950, Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) was

established in the building. CDRI carried out several additions and alterations in the building including intermediate floors between the original floors and new structures on terraces. Presently, the building is protected by the Uttar Pradesh State Archaeology. INTACH has been approached by the state Govt. to prepare a conservation plan and undertake conservation of the palace complex. A team of architects from AHD are presently documenting the building in great detail and the conservation plan is under preparation.

DPR Phase-I which includes emergency repairs to Chhatar Manzil, refurbishment of the administration block and the facade has been submitted to the Govt.

Restoration and Conservation of Balaji Ghat, VaranasiThe palace was severely damaged and the wooden portion of the building on the 4 upper stories had completely collapsed in 1999. The building was in ruins with debris and salvage material scattered all around the complex. It had been exposed to the vagaries of nature in this state for more than 10 years, which had aggravated the problems. In September 2009 the floor of the Naubatkhana collapsed. INTACH started the phase-1 work in 2012 and proposed to complete it by June 2015. The second phase will commence in August 2015.

Implementation of the project was difficult as it was cumbersome to get the building materials to the site. The decayed timber components were salvaged, numbered and stacked appro-priately. These were later consolidated by the material conservators from A&MH Division.

In Phase-I the museum section was taken up. It has been reconstructed up to the 2nd floor.

listing of architectural, natural and material heritage was undertaken. In Dadra Nagar Haveli, 65 heritage sites have been identified. While Daman has about 400 heritage buildings, Diu and the neighbouring villages have 467 heritage properties in all.

Listing of all three areas have been completed and submitted to Department of Tourism & Urban Development Daman & Diu.

The Integrated heritage plan for Daman proposes the following projects: Restoration and revitalization of the Moti Daman fort wall and moat and making it accessible for public and tourists. DPR for the same is being made. Heritage and natural walk trails are proposed within Nani Daman and Moti Daman. Also, the revitalization of main streets of Moti Daman and Nani Daman are proposed.

DPR for the restoration and adaptive re-use of heritage structures at Moti Daman fort proposes that the present PWD building is converted into a museum and an art gallery and the jail is converted into cafeteria and used to house other public utilities. DPR for the restoration and revitalization of Bocage house at Moti Daman Fort proposes its reuse as a tourist information centre and the hospital building to be restored and reused as a tourist guest house.

Projects in DiuDiu is a small island situated in the Gulf of Cambay and the town is located at the east end of the island. It was one of the main Portuguese holds in India till 1961. The city still carries the evidences of Portuguese presence in its heritage buildings. Pani Bai School and Fortress of Panikotha are the two landmarks structures,

conservation of which was commissioned to INTACH by the Department of Culture and Tourism, Government of Daman and Diu, and DNH.

Pani Bai SchoolThe school is situated in a narrow street of a crowded residential area, in the middle of the fortified Diu town. It was one of the first schools in Portuguese medium and was started on 1st December, 1927. The building comprises of several ornamental features. The façade is embellished with carved figures and motifs in stone. Since the building is not in use, it has decayed. INTACH is now preparing a detailed project report and a reuse proposal for the building.

Fortress of PanikothaThe Fortress of Pani Kotha was built before the Portuguese rule in Diu. The Portuguese got the domain of the fortress on 25th October 1535, in celebration of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the Portuguese and Sultan Bahadur. The location and setting, itself are the main highlights of the building. It is a long narrow structure that stands like a ship between the island and the mainland.

Layers of cement plaster over the building’s surface during recent interventions have under-mined its authenticity. Scientific Investigations are proposed to identify the original layers and details. INTACH is now preparing a conservation plan to conserve its physical integrity and to increase the tourism potential.

St. Francis Assisi Church and Convent The restoration and development of St. Francis Assisi is in progress, starting from the external plaster work of bell tower. The restoration and adaptive reuse of the hospital building as a museum is scheduled after the hospital shifts to its new premises.

St. Thomas churchThe external façade of St. Thomas church, which is at present an art gallery, is being restored while the waterproofing has been done on the roof.

Setting up of Urban Haat at the site of former Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, AmritsarThe hospital previously known as the Victoria Jubilee Hospital began functioning as general hospital in 1891. Later, the building was abandoned since a new hospital was constructed at another location. The Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA) initiated the effort to conserve and reuse the Hospital Complex and appointed INTACH for design and supervision. Setting up an Urban Haat and Heritage Hotel was found to be most appropriate reuse proposal given the scale of the building and the surrounding spaces. The Urban Haat proposed on the northern part of the site occupies nearly 4.6 acres of the total 9.70 acres and includes space for craft display, sales stall, food stalls, crafts demonstration and appreciation centre, museum and exhibition hall, dormitories for artisans, amphitheatre etc. Execution of the work on site is proposed in 3 Phases.

Onsite Waste Water Treatment of Mantola Nala, East Taj Drain and Circuit House Lake in Agra using Bioremediation Techniques: As in most urban areas sewage and wastewater is finding its way into water channels and lakes resulting in foul odour, eutrophication and discharge of polluted waters into the river. Agra is a prime source of tourism-based revenue and polluted waters feature in most of the tourist attractions. Accordingly, Commissioner [Agra] invited INTACH to carry out the remediation of some critical water features. Thus:East Taj Drain: Crosses the eastern entry to Taj. INTACH put in sandbag weirs and bacteria dozing to successfully remove foul odour and reduce the pollution load at the river outfall from 70 mg/l BoD to <40 mg/l BoD.Circuit House Lake: This foul smelling lake forms part of the Golf Course. It was rich in algal turbidity with almost nil dissolved

oxygen and receiving wastewater from the Police Colony. A settling pond was created within the lake around the discharge point using sandbag weirs. Bacterial dozing was introduced in the Police Colony 500m away in the inflow channel. In situ dozing was carried out for 6 months using a boat. While the smell has been eliminated the DO raised to 4 mg/l and algal turbidity greatly reduced. The activities have enhanced sunlight input into the deeper waters assisting photosynthetic processes in the deeper layers. The BoD in the lake was reduced from 45 mg/l to 12 mg/l.Mantola Nala: This drain crosses the entry to the Red Fort. It carries 14 MLD of polluted water with a BoD level of 160 mg/l. With similar measures as above the BoD level has gone down to <50 mg/l.

ecological studies of the Sambhar Lake and its catchment, biodiversity surveys, threat assessment and stakeholder assessments.

Ganga River Front Development, Patna-II: Under the National Ganga River Basin project, the Govt. of Bihar has taken a decision to actively manage the riverfront. The right bank of the river, in a stretch of 8 km. with almost 300 ha of land, has become available owing to the northward migration of the river course. To prevent the erosion of the bank, the Govt. is proposing to lay geo-tubes with support of the World Bank. The entire area is vulnerable to inundation. INTACH has proposed keeping the entire area green to offer a green lung to the congested old Patliputra areas, improve access and connection to the river, the use of local sedge grass to hold up the riverbank in an inexpensive and durable manner. The greens will also include sacred groves and forests thus creating habitats for faunal biodiversity.

Study of Yamuna Stream Ecology: This project aims at studying ecological characteristics of River Yamuna in Delhi-NCR region from Palla to Okhla. The study documents the current status of riparian vegetation of the floodplains, aquatic plants, zooplanktons and phytoplanktons, water quality, and various other socio-economic linkages. The study forms a baseline against which changes in river ecology would be measured assessing the current health of the Yamuna ecosystem and in figuring out better management recommendations.

Urban Biodiversity Project: Harsh urbanization is destroying biodiversity and distancing humans from nature. NHD has proposed a pioneering approach in enhancing urban biodiversity and habitats with the National Capital Territory as the model. This project aims at biodiversity inventorization and documentation to assess species and associated landscape information in some selected areas. It is proposed to document natural features and habitats and delineate them on a base map of NCT Delhi. The urban biodiversity plan would then be put in the policy domain to influence Delhi’s masterplan and also provide a replicable model for other cities. This work has been completed.

Intangible Cultural Heritage

Cultural Mapping ProjectsDahanuThe Dahanu Chapter undertook a study to document the Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Warli people in order to identify the exact nature of the linkages between the tribal cultures with their surrounding environment.

The Warli are a tribe spread over Bombay, Nashik and Palghar districts of Maharashtra and Dangs and Valsad districts of Gujarat. The present project, by documenting the culture of the Warli people, seeks to illuminate a negotiation between development and

traditional knowledge. Through this study, strategies have been evolved providing a variety of options that can enhance the economic situation of this community as well as preserve their intangible culture which is pitted against urban cultural homogenization.

RajpiplaWith a view to upholding and preserving the harmonious coexistence of diverse cultural traditions, the Rajpipla Chapter of INTACH has sought to document the lifestyle and culture of the adivasi Bhil community residing in the Rajpipla area in Saurashtra, Gujarat along the Sahayadri mountain range.

The project titled ‘A Stroll Amongst Tribal Panorama’ opens up with a narrative of the Bhil community and their symbiotic relationship with nature and their intangible cultural heritage.

The aim of this documentation has been to reclaim the roots of the Bhils and to revitalize certain endangered and languishing elements of this community. The project also aims at encouraging the age old tradition of fun fair, festivities, music and dances of the Bhils.

JharkhandThe Jharkhand Chapter is documenting seven dances of Jharkhand − Daantha, Sarpha, Dasai, Dhonger, Singrai, Langre and Rinjha.

The project brings out the significance of the Santhals’ oral traditions as a major part of their culture, and its transmission to the next generation.

Their habitat, food habits, musical instruments and social lifestyle has been documented. Various festivals that are related to the dance of Santhals have also been documented. The aim of documenting these dances was to protect them from extinction and promoting them within the community. The larger goal was to make government and non government bodies aware of the Santhal Culture and motivate them to take initiatives to keep their creative expressions intact.

Apart from the above mentioned projects there are three more ongoing projects with the Nagaland and Jammu Chapters of INTACH and the Tribal Fund.

The Nagaland Chapter of INTACH has been documenting the Intangible Heritage of two Naga tribes, namely Yimchungru-Naga and Khiamuingan Naga, residing in the frontier district of Tuensang. The state of Nagaland is inhabited by 16 major tribes and many sub tribes. Each tribe is distinct from the other in textiles, language, folklore, origin of stories, customs and social practices, despite the shared affinities.

Amongst various tribal communities living in Jammu, the Gujjars of the plains of Jammu are either nomadic or semi-nomadic and are dependent on their live stock. During summer months they move to the higher reaches of the Himalayas. The ongoing project taken up by the Jammu Chapter seeks to document the Intangible Heritage of this community.

The project on the Kannauras of Himachal Pradesh, taken up by the Tribal Fund, in collaboration with the ICH division, seeks to document the Kannaura Community residing in upper and lower Kinnaur, in Sangla valley in Himachal Pradesh. The Kannaura community is well known for having retained their cultural traditions and practices over many decades. They are a living example of how a community is transitioning in modern times while still being connected with their heritage.

Natural Heritage

Documenting the natural habitat and biodiversity in heritage premises Heritage sites such as sprawling forts offer refuge for biodiversity amidst harsh urban development. INTACH initiated a pilot project whereby biodiversity of Adilabad Fort, Tughlaqabad Fort, Siri Fort and Jehanpanah Forest was surveyed to assess the species and associated landscape level information. The mapping also revealed that these precincts could be linked to each other in the form of patch corridors. Spread in large tracts of lands, old forts and heritage sites in urban areas contribute

to green cover and represent a fair amount of native biodiversity. Such forts with other green areas may be seen as significant green corridors in urban landscapes. The concept can then be replicated in several other urban cities of India.

Documenting lesser known Baolis of Rajasthan Prominent sites are noted whereas lesser known traditional water structures fall through the cracks becoming prey to neglect and ‘development’. INTACH undertook listing of traditional water structures such as wells, kundis, johads, checkdams in Bikaner and Churu districts through field work. The reports have been made available to our Rajasthan Chapter to pursue with the authorities.

Biodiversity management plan for Delhi Cantonment On the request of Army authorities INTACH has prepared a water management plan for deficit 42 sq. km. Cantt. area where several tubewells are running dry. INTACH is also preparing a biodiversity management plan for the Cantt. area. Initial biodiversity surveys of the area revealed presence of invasive species such as Prosopis juliflora (Vilayti Kikar), Laucena leucocephala (White Babool) which suppress the growth and regeneration of native species. Habitat fragmentation due to construction of roads and buildings is also creating a hindrance in genetic exchange and movement of biodiversity in the region. Studies are in process to develop wastelands in the area into biodiversity parks. To further enhance and allow movement of biodiversity, activities like afforestation of native species and wildlife corridors connecting fragmented habitats have been suggested.

Manual for Traditional Construction in LadakhThe local architecture of the region, which had evolved over a period of hundreds of years to counter the harsh climatic conditions, is in danger due to the new construction technology which is being readily adapted by the people. The easy supply of new and “modern” building material from the mainland further threatens the traditional practices. The traditional practice of building has always been a community work in Ladakh. In such a situation, it becomes extremely important to document the traditional knowledge to help continue its practice, which resulted in the publication of manual for traditional construction and repair technologies. the construction, restoration and repair of traditional buildings with local materials and technique. To prepare the manual, an extensive survey and research was carried out in four regions of Ladakh (Leh, Nubra, Zangskar and Kargil). This included case study of ongoing construction, interviews with masons, carpenters etc. We are hopeful that the manual will be a good reference source to the people involved in the field.

State of Built Heritage of India’ initiativeAH Division of INTACH has embarked upon a crucial pan-India initiative: to prepare a ‘State of Built Heritage of India’ report. The objective is to establish the threats and issues that our unprotected heritage faces by collecting ground data on the same, and to recommend effective strategies to address these challenges.

The first phase of this endeavour has been completed as a study from secondary sources. The second phase has commenced now wherein data is being collated from as many regions as possible from across the country. For the purpose, primary studies are being conducted in selected regions based on representative examples of built heritage. Pertinent findings from ongoing and recently completed projects of INTACH are being featured as case studies. Contributions have been invited from INTACH Chapters, professionals and concerned citizens at large for case-studies highlighting various issues. As part of the initiative, a ‘Heritage at Risk’ Register is also being compiled for built heritage facing threats.
