Have you all had a good winter? I hope so and I hope you’re ready to get out and go with me because I have so many great things planned for us.

We’re doing three Twins games this year, one in the favorite Home Plate Box right up home plate on June 28 and one in the Legends Club for their very last game, September 20. Then we’ve added a cheaper one with Grandstand seats on April 19 that will be a great bargain – Buy One Get One Half Off. Cost for the first ticket will be $60 and the second will be $30. We’re hoping some people will bring their grandkids along for this one. Since it is in April, you will need to act fast as the deadline is March 18. CALL NOW!

Then I have four theater trips set up so far this year. In April we’ll go back to the beautiful Ives Auditorium in the Masonic Heritage Hall for Breakin’ Up is Hard to Do on the 23rd and then on August 13 for Piano Man. I’d love to get back to the Ives, everyone loved it the last time we went. On June 3, we’ll see Music Man at the ever popular Chanhassen Dinner Theater. The best is saved for August 22 when we will see the Broadway play Come From Away at the Orpheum. We just saw this in November in New York and it is so heart-warming, sweetly funny and musically entertaining. It tells the tale of the people of Gander, Newfoundland on 9-11 where 38 planes were grounded, stranding 7000 people in a town of 10,000 people and 550 hotel rooms. This does have an early deadline, April 10 so hurry on this one.

There are four extended trips this year – Mississippi River Cruise in March, Cape Cod in June, Canada/New England Fall Colors Cruise in September-October and Austria/Germany for Christmas Markets in December. It’s too late for the March trip but you can still sign up for the other three. Hurry for Cape Cod which is already sold but still has room. That is scheduled for June 14-20. There will be a Travel Show for the Austria/Germany trip on Monday, April 13 at 1 pm in Mankato and 5:30 pm in Fairmont. Come get the information you need on this exciting adventure.

We’ll be offering monthly educational classes called Tuesday Talks on the second Tuesday of each month. Those will be in Owatonna at 9 am, Mankato at 1 pm and Fairmont at 5:30 pm. Our first ones will be on March 10 and will give us information on common questions regarding financial planning. Check out the list on page 17. Please join us wherever and whenever you are able.

Secure Act - Changes to Required Minimum DistributionsYou may have read in the news about the SECURE (Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement) Act that went into effect on January 1, 2020 and wondered if it will affect your retirement accounts. This Act makes some very significant changes to required minimum distribution (RMD) rules as related to Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) and other retirement plans, in addition to changes in other areas.

Some of these changes may have an impact on your financial planning and other financial interests. Although there are some questions that will need to be answered in the future by the Department of the Treasury, you should be aware of the provisions that may impact you.

REQUIRED MINIMUM DISTRIBUTIONS:• You can delay RMDs until age 72. If you

became age 70½ on or after January 1, 2020, you may defer required minimum distributions (RMDs) until April 1 of the year following the year you reach age 72.

• New 10-year “stretch” window for inherited retirement accounts. Previously, the distribution period was the remaining “on paper” life expectancy of the first beneficiary. Under the new rules, a maximum 10-year stretch window applies, but with various exceptions. This means that unless an exception applies, the entire retirement account must be distributed by the end of the tenth year following the retirement account owner’s death. In such case, no annual distributions are required prior to the end the 10-year period.

• Exceptions to 10-year stretch window. Some beneficiaries can continue to use their own life expectancy, including beneficiaries who are spouses (who also retain the right to spousal rollovers), disabled or chronically ill, or not more than 10 years younger than the decedent. For minor (as defined by state law) children of the original owner, age-based RMDs must be taken until the child reaches the age of state-defined majority, then the 10-year rule applies.

• Multiple beneficiaries. For inherited accounts where the original owner died prior to January 1, 2020, the old rules still apply; however, if the original beneficiary dies, the successor beneficiary will be subject to the 10-year stretch rule.

• Trusts. Conduit trusts require the RMD to be distributed fully to the beneficiaries, whereas accumulation trusts allow an accumulation of the RMD in the trust. There are specific additional exceptions for accumulation trusts if the trust benefits a disabled or chronically ill individual.

• Qualified charitable distributions (QCDs). Tax-free distributions up to $100,000 (which may include the RMD amount) made from an IRA directly to certain bona fide 501(c)(3) charities are still available beginning at age 70½. The SECURE Act did not change the rules regarding QCDs.

MISCELLANEOUS PROVISIONS:• New exception to 10% early

distribution penalty. Now up to $5,000 can be distributed penalty-free for a qualified birth or adoption; the distribution must occur during a one-year period beginning on either the date of birth or the finalization of adoption of a child under 18.

• IRA contributions after age 70½. Contributions can be made so long as the individual receives compensation from either wages or self-employment income.

• 529 Plan distributions. Allowable expenses are further expanded to include fees, books, supplies and required equipment for certain apprenticeship programs and for qualified student loan repayments.

• “Kiddie” Tax. The SECURE Act has now once again reverted to the previous rule which taxes a child’s unearned income over a threshold amount at the parents’ marginal tax rate. Additionally, individuals can file amended tax returns and can elect to apply this change retroactively for taxable years 2018 and 2019.

As you can see, there are many new provisions that can affect your overall financial plan for your retirement years. Please contact the office if you have any questions or would like more detailed information about the SECURE Act .

I grew up all over the great state of Minnesota. I started off in Fairmont Minnesota and then moved to Rochester Minnesota with my mother. I then attended Shattuck St. Marys for middle school in Faribault. After my time in Faribault I moved to my father’s house on the East Side of St. Paul, later moving back to Fairmont to graduate highschool. In high school, around the age of 17, I joined the Army National Guard as a 13b (Field Artillery) Cannon Crewmember. Approximately 7 months after graduating high school and completing my training, I was shipped out on my first deployment for a year. I am currently in my 11th year with the National Guard and it is definitely considered my second family. After my deployment I moved to Roseville MN to pursue sales in the workforce. I had worked in sales in the Cities for 5 years after my deployment. My favorite part of sales is the personal relationships that were built and still maintained to this day. I also love offering products with integrity so that they will benefit my customers necessities and when the insurance position was offered to me it fit EXACTLY with how I wanted to sell a product. Profinium has brought that trust between me and an employer along the lines of doing what’s right for the customer. Half of my family is originally from Fairmont Minnesota and the other half is originally from the south side of Chicago, IL. I have a beautiful and intelligent girlfriend Brittany and an energetic and babied german shorthair pointer (Moxxi) who is spoiled rotten. We also have a cat named Big Tom who does whatever he wants whenever he wants. I have a few hobbies that I enjoy partaking in, but my favorite of them all is biking. I have a specialized diverge that I ride almost every day in the summer time. I also have a backpacking bike that I put bags on filled with camping supplies and hit the trails around the Black Hills in South Dakota. I love playing around with new technology and listening to music in my spare time at home. Profinium is beyond the positive atmosphere that I expected!

I was raised in the Truman and Fairmont area. I went to grade school at St. Paul’s Lutheran in both Truman, K-4, and Fairmont, 5-8, then graduated from Fairmont High School. I went to college at the University of South Dakota and graduated with my BS in Business Administration.

I have worked at Profinium for almost 4 years, starting in the Mortgage Department, as a Loan Processor. In June of 2019, I was hired into the Insurance Agency. Prior to working at Profinium, I had been an Insurance Agent for 15 years. I have missed being in the insurance field and this was a dream come true to get back into it.

I have two beautiful daughters, Kaylee and Jenna, and an amazing 19 month old grandson, Landon. They are my pride and joy. My youngest daughter is engaged, so we are busy wedding planning. Some of my favorite things to do are reading, puzzles, spending time with my family and friends, and of course, my most favorite thing is spending time with Landon. Landon and I enjoy reading books together, playing with his blocks and trucks, and watching his favorite movie “Trolls”. He loves to be outside and is enjoying the snow. I absolutely love watching him learn and grow!

I am excited to be back working in insurance. I look forward to meeting all of our current customers and to help them as well as new customers have the best protection! That is what I love about Profinium – the customer comes FIRST!

NEW INSURANCE TEAM

I grew up in Welcome MN with five siblings. I have lived in Fairmont for almost all of my adult life working in many retail positions until ten years ago. I then decided to start a career as an Independent Insurance agent working with the Fairmont community selling many insurance products such as Home, Auto, Commercial and Farm. I joined the Profinium team last October due to the wonderful workplace atmosphere. My commitment to professional development has earned me my Certified Insurance Counselor designation. I am married to Kristin and we have three children, Calvin, Kailyn and Addilyn. In my free time I enjoy coaching my children’s sports teams, outdoor activities such as hunting, boating and camping. My passion is volunteering with the Fairmont Fire department. I look forward to helping our Profinium customers in protecting what is most important to them.

FAIRMONT & TRUMAN MERCHANT DISCOUNTS

Please remember to ask for your discount BEFORE making your purchase. The number one reason merchants have dropped out of this program is that people mention their discount after the transaction is finished. Then the clerk or salesperson has to rerun the transaction. This slows up their service and causes them extra work. The only thing these merchants get from this program is this small amount of advertising in our newsletter and the hope that you will patronize their business because of it. Please DO NOT abuse this PRIVILEGE or we may all lose it! If your business is interested in offering a discount to our Top of the Hill members or you know of a business you’d like to see here, please contact Ellen at 507-235-7577.

We are going to be making the merchant discounts more accessible while you are on the go. We will be moving the merchant discounts to the Top of the Hill Club section of our website. Also, we are printing accordian paper versions that will fit in your wallet so you will always have access to your discounts. Ellen will be distributing those at upcoming events.

14 All Theater trips include deluxe motorcoach transportation, theater tickets and lunch.

“Breakin’ Up is Hard to Do” Thursday, April 23 Sidekick Theater in Bloomington Everyone loved this venue when we went for Frank Sinatra and I’m thrilled to be going back there. It is a very new and beautiful facility and they serve an excellent meal ahead of time. This show is a musical comedy set at a Catskills resort in 1960. It is the sweetly comic story of Lois and Marge, two friends from Brooklyn in search of good times and romance over one wild Labor Day weekend. The score showcases 18 Neil Sedaka classics, including “Where the Boys Are”, “Sweet Sixteen”, “Calendar Girl”, “Love Will Keep Us Together”, and of course, the chart-topping title song.

“Piano Man” Thursday, August 13 Sidekick Theater in Bloomington Everyone loved this venue when we went for Frank Sinatra and this features the same lead singer, Brian Pekol. I’m thrilled to be going back there. It is a very new and beautiful facility and they serve an excellent meal ahead of time. “The Piano Man” is a melodious salute to the 1950s, 60s and 70s, through the classic songs of Jerry Lee Lewis, Elton John, Billy Joel, and more! Brian Pekol is back on the Sidekick stage! And this time it’s not as Frank Sinatra...a role he performed to critical and commercial acclaim in 2018. Together with a grand piano and his band “The Pranksters”, get ready for a fun-filled musical trip down memory lane. Brian’s hands will fly across the keyboard as he sings tunes including “Great Balls of Fire”, “Rocket Man”, “Benny and the Jets”, and of course, ”Piano Man”.

$88 for members, $98 for non-members boarding in Mankato and Owatonna

Broadway’s COME FROM AWAY is a Best Musical winner all across North America! This New York Times Critics’ Pick takes you into the heart of the remarkable true story of 7,000 stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland that welcomed them. Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. Don’t miss this breathtaking new musical written by Tony® nominees Irene Sankoff and David Hein, and helmed by Tony-winning Best Director, Christopher Ashley. Newsweek cheers, “It takes you to a place you never want to leave!” On 9/11, the world stopped. On 9/12, their stories moved us all.

PERSONAL BANKING

There are a number of ways identity thieves may obtain your personal information. An identity thief may dig through trash, open mail boxes, take a wallet, or use a fake email to collect your personally identifying information, such as your name, address, Social Security Number, credit card or bank account information and then sell or use your identity to commit fraud or other criminal acts.

How long should I keep something before safely disposing of confidential information to prevent identity theft? There are some important documents that you should keep indefinitely. These include birth certificates, death certificates, military records, marriage certificates, divorce decrees, alimony/ custody/ prenuptial agreements, life insurance policies, medical records and real estate documents. A safe deposit box is a great place to ensure these documents are secure and in a convenient location if you need them. You can also store passports, certificate of deposits, 401K and IRA statements. Profinium provides six months free on any new safe deposit box rental for Top of The Hill members. It is also a good idea to put a co-renter on the box who will have access to these important documents in the event the box owner passes away. If you are not sure if your current box has a co-renter listed please reach out to a Profinium Personal Banker to learn more.

Typically, the length of time you should keep a particular document depends on the action, expense, or event which the document records. You probably learned that you should keep your tax returns and supporting documents three years after filing it. This time line is set because the IRS has 3 years after the due date of your return (or the date you file it) to initiate an audit. When someone passes away you should keep important documents like W2s, Charitable Contributions respites, and IRS Form 1099 for at least three years after a person’s death or three years after the filing of any estate tax return, whichever is later. Keep monthly bank statements, credit card bills, loans, and other bills for one year. Everything else has as needed life span. Only keep the receipt until you know that it won’t be needed to return merchandise or the warranty expires. Again you shred any papers that you don’t keep. To help you safely dispose of these types of sensitive documents Profinium offers free document shredding once a year.

What about information saved on my electronic devices? The digital era has brought many conveniences and opportunities for a thief to access vulnerable information. Smartphones, laptops, tablets, and desktop computers use a hard drive to stores all of your files and the operating system, which is essential to using the computer. A typical home desktop computer or laptop hard drive can contain your social security number, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and website logins

ID Theft and Shredding Eventand passwords. Neglecting regular software updates and not using a passcode leave you especially vulnerable.

A thief does not have to physically take a hard drive to access the information stored on your electronic devices. If you’re using the internet without update antivirus software and firewall protection you could fall prey to hackers who access your hard drive’s information remotely. Phishing scams occur when a criminal poses as a legitimate entity, such as an auction site, IT administrator, or bank, and requests a target’s information via email or a fake website.

If you’re looking to trade in your phone, or hand it down to a friend or family member, you probably don’t want to hand over your data, pics, music or apps with it. Before you upgrade to the newest device you need to ensure that you get all of your personal data off of the old one first. It’s a great idea to go to the experts to assist you with this process as you don’t want to lose your precious photos and contacts but you also don’t want them available to others.

TUESDAY TALKS

Of course, we are continuing our free monthly movie events but I won’t be devoting space to them in the newsletter except to list them on the Calendar of Events. I have started an email list for each location to inform people of what movie will be showing so be sure to contact me to get on those lists.

I am planning a Mystery Trip for the last week of July but don’t have all the details worked out yet for that. Watch for that in the next newsletter. We’re also going to the Red Wing area for an overnight stay and lots of fun stops. I won’t keep this one a mystery and it is planned for the end of August. Ur very popular Greenhouse Shop Hop is scheduled for Thursday May 7 and you will find details on page 19.

We’ve made a slight change to pricing on our trips this year and will be charging $10 less for our Mankato and Owatonna members when we head north.

Our last extended trip was to New York City with a group of 20 excited adventurers. We took coach tours of the city from Upper East Side to the Financial District and lots in between. Stops included the Frick Collection, Central Park, Times Square, Ellis Island, the 9-11 Museum, and a Brooklyn Pizza Tour. We allowed for lots of free time but also did two Broadway shows – Wicked and Come From Away. Don’t miss your chance to see Come From Away here in Minnesota at the Orpheum theater on August 22. We’re going! Many took in the Empire State Building, Rockettes, Top of the Rock, or a carriage ride on their own.
