Highlights of 2012

➤ $2.7 million was contributed to the Foundation family of funds

➤ $1.6 million in grants was distributed to over 350 organizations

➤ $720,000 in scholarships was issued to over 450 Cape Cod and Island students

➤ 13 new funds supporting education, culture, music, recreation and youth activities were created for the overall betterment of Cape Cod

➤ Regional Youth Development strategies were implemented through the Foundation-led initiative, Cape-Wide Youth Action Plan

Dear Friends,

In 2012, the Foundation saw many challenges facing our beloved Cape Cod community – social, environmental and educational issues that demand our collective time and attention.

Yet through your generosity and support, we continue our mission of bringing together people who care with causes that matter to our region. We are inspired by the tireless work of Cape agencies that confront regional issues head-on and offer hope, one person at a time. Our donors have created and supported funds that provide a better quality of life to our residents, such as preserving and protecting our delicate environment, enhancing art and culture throughout the community, and offering vital housing, shelter and human services to those in need.

In 2012, on behalf of our donors, we distributed $1.6 million in grants to over 350 organizations who support critical community needs such as youth development, land preservation and homelessness prevention, to name just a few. We assisted our donors in providing $320,000 in scholarships to support over 100 students in their important pursuit of continued education. We worked with our supporting organization, the Cape Cod Association, to provide another $400,000 in scholarship funds to exceptional Cape Cod and Islands students.

We welcome you to be part of our continued work in building permanent charitable resources to further our community. It is our hope that our future continues to brighten as we support community leaders in addressing local issues and fostering greater giving and volunteering on Cape Cod. Town Funds

The Falmouth Fund (est. 2009) and The Chatham Fund (est. 2011) are area funds designed to meet the unique needs of their respective communities. Both funds are beneficiaries of donations from Community Philanthropists, who have committed at least $5,000 over five years, and other donors. The Falmouth Fund granted nearly $30,000 in 2012. (See Grantees on pages 10-11). The Chatham

Fund is organizing and raising funds to prepare for grantmaking in 2013.

Cape Cod Foundation Funds

Generous, community-minded individuals, families, businesses and organizations such as those listed below have partnered with the Cape Cod Foundation for nearly 25 years to achieve their charitable goals by establishing named funds. Totaling 238 at the end of 2012, these funds

The Foundation also oversees additional funds that will be created in the future from planned gifts. The Foundation manages charitable annuity and trust funds, which provide income to the donor and other beneficiaries and support future discretionary or designated programs in the community.

Financial Stewardship

We are pleased to report that in 2012, the value of our endowed funds reached an all-time high at the end of the first quarter, in excess of $27.5 million. This is a result of four factors – market appreciation; additions to existing donor-advised funds; thirteen new funds established last year; and bequests from some of the more than seventy Keel Society members who have included the Foundation in their estate plans. Taken together, these represent a powerful force that will have a multi-generational impact on the quality of life for residents of the Cape.

Regarding market performance, we enjoyed a recovery to peak levels of most domestic equity indices in April while the bond market, a strong performer during this extended period of artificially induced low interest rates, languished early in the year. International markets have generally lagged for an extended period. As this is written, economic signals are decidedly mixed suggesting the recovery here may pause pending definitive fiscal leadership in Washington. Europe remains troubled, growth in China seems to be decelerating while the central bank in Japan is endeavoring to jump start a long dormant economy.

The risks to financial markets are, as always, many and varied and your Investment Committee is focused on attempting to attain an optimal level of diversification designed to produce positive returns while dampening overall volatility. While the task is challenging, our talented and dedicated Investment Committee continues to work on a common cause. The Foundation and, by extension, the multitude of charities we serve, are fortunate to have their services. I am most grateful for the time and wisdom they bring to the investment process.

In Memoriam

George C. DillonOctober 29, 1922-February 16, 2013

George Chaffee Dillon was a successful businessman and Harvard University graduate who served on the Cape Cod Foundation Board for eight years and truly believed in the mission of the Cape Cod Foundation. He especially enjoyed his extensive work on the Cape Cod Foundation Grants Committee. A native of Independence, Missouri, he was introduced to Cape Cod through his wife, Joan Kent, who had family in the area. A Lt. Commander in the US Navy during World War II, George earned his Masters degree from Harvard Business School and embarked on a thriving career in manufacturing.

Upon his retirement, George settled in to the family’s summer home in North Chatham. He was a deeply religious man and an accomplished tennis and paddle tennis rackets player. George enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling, solving challenging crossword puzzles and taking in the local culture.
