How He Became President

• John Tyler never ran for President. He was the Vice President to William Henry Harrison, who died 32 days after becoming President. After Harrison’s death, John Tyler replaced him as President.

• Many sources say that Texas was annexed during Tyler’s time in office. However, Texas was annexed on December 29, 1845, months after Tyler left office. Based on this information, it can be assumed that Tyler was a strong advocate for the annexation of Texas, but this was not achieved until Polk took over office after Tyler.

Important Terms• Tyler vetoed a banking bill proposed by Whig members of

• Independent Treasury System Repealed (1841): Only one year after its creation, the Independent Treasury Act was repealed. The Whig party repealed it hoping to create a new central bank. • Brook Farm Established (1841): This farm was created under the transcendentalists. They believed that physical labour was essential for mental wellbeing and health. The main purpose was to allow everyone to have an equal chance for spiritual, economic and intellectual growth. • Oregon Fever (1841): Americans wanted to settle in Oregon because of how beautiful and rich the land was. Huge numbers of people travelled on the Oregon Trail. Most settlers were antislavery, which would support antislavery causes (as well as the Civil War) in the future.

The Webster-Ashburton Treaty: Settled a land dispute between the US and Britain over boundaries between the Northern states and Canada. The US gained some land because of the treaty. The land defines our northeastern border with Canada. (1842) http://www.u-s-history.com/pages/h357.html

Slave Mutiny on the Creole: 134 slaves on the Creole rebelled and sailed the ship to the British port of Nassua. The British refused to hand over the slaves and ships to America because slavery was outlawed by the British. It was an example of foreign opinion and laws effecting the US. Contributions• Florida was added to the Union. This increased land in the country and,

because it was originally owned by Spain, created more cultural diversity. (Positive)
