I am pleased to advise that John Paul College will have a very full roll next year. I have been impressed, once again, by the calibre of students seeking a place at the College. The priority for families wanting a solid, high quality, Christian education in a safe learning environment, where academic excellence and extra-curricular achievement is promoted. Please be advised that applications for 2018 have now closed and any received from now will be placed on our waiting list pending available places at the end of the year. Because of the numbers on our waiting list, please advise the school as soon as possible if your child will not be attending John Paul College next year. ACADEMIC AUDIT: YEARS 11-13 At present Deans, Faculty Heads and teachers are identifying students at risk of the following:

1. Insufficient credits to pass NCEA Levels 1, 2 and 3 2. Not achieving University Entrance 3. Insufficient literacy and numeracy credits 4. Not handing in assignments or seeking reassessment opportunities

If you are contacted by school staff on any of the above, please give them your full cooperation and support. It is in your child’s best interests. SCHOOL FEES & ATTENDANCE DUES

It is important to note that there are two distinct charges to parents whose children attend John Paul College. Attendance dues are charged by the Hamilton Diocese, largely for buildings, while school fees contribute to resources and running costs of the school. The Hamilton Diocese have spent well over $10million on buildings for JPC over the last decade, including the new technology block, costing $3.3million, which has been greatly appreciated by staff and students. RUGBY 2017 The weekend just gone saw all the JPC teams play with a mixed bag of results. The U14's WHHS/JPC team travelled to TBC to play the top of the table Stripes team. They have certainly improved as the season has gone on but were unable to beat the TBC Stripes who were all class in the win. The U15's gave up home advantage to play RBHS and were looking to finish their season on a high note. They pushed RBHS to the final whistle where a kick would have won it for them. Unfortunately this did not come off and they were beaten. This team has played in the tough premiership and has improved as the season has continued. There is certainly some talent that will be looking at 1st XV duties next season. Our REP/JPC team played RBHS U15A at RBHS also. Some of the U15's stepped up to play to give them valuable experience. The result did not go our way. There are two games left to play in their season. The 1st XV travelled to Aquinas with the knowledge that they needed to get a bonus point win to have any chance of qualifying for the finals this weekend. They would also need other results to go their way to be in the top 4. Opotiki did not help things when, on Friday morning, they withdrew from their game with Bethlehem handing them 5 points and 20 points. Aquinas knew everything was on the line and played to their strengths. The JPC had a stirring pregame haka and also came out firing. It was all on! After a physical first 10 minutes, JPC took the lead with a well taken try out wide which was converted. They then managed to score another 2 unanswered tries to take the score out to 21 nil. Aquinas finally decided to play some rugby and they were the next to score with a great individual effort, followed up with a team try to go into half time 21 - 10 down. The second half was a torrid affair and JPC suffered two serious injuries that put the pressure on the others. They succeeded in crossing the Aquinas try line in the last 5 minutes of the half to score that all-important 4th try. The final result was 26 - 10 to JPC. We had done everything we could to get into the top 4 and were eagerly awaiting other results. Unfortunately, Trident had not managed to beat RBHS in a close encounter and our fate was sealed, no finals rugby for this season. This team has come on leaps and bounds and deserves congratulations in the way they have conducted themselves and the brand of rugby that they have played. Thanks to the coaching staff, sponsors, supporters and the school for their support. We will continue to train Tues and Thurs as we are looking to have a couple of post season games to finish the year off. This week's games 12 August 2017 U14 JPC/WHHS Vs Rotorua Boys Black WHHS @ 10.30am 2nd XV Rep/JPC vs Tarawera TBC

FROM THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS CENTRE John Paul College is very lucky that we will be having the Absolute Dental – Mobile Clinic here at school from 28th August 2017-29th September 2017. At this stage, the mobile unit will only be for students from year 9-13, but hopefully in the future, we may be able to offer something for Years 7 & 8 next year. We will be seeing year 13 students first and working our way back to the year 9 students. This is because the dental treatment is FREE for students until they reach 18 so it is important the students nearer that age are seen first and any treatment they need is seen to before they reach 18. Please see the Fact Sheet 3 regarding “The Age of Consent and Informed Consent for Children”. If you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact the School Nurse Cathy Flavell 3478795 ext 8806 re your concerns. E: [email protected] Students will need to collect an enrolment form from the nurse and return to her as soon as possible before the above dates so appointment times can be arranged for them.

DENTAL CARE IS FREE EVERY YEAR UNTIL YOU TURN 18 SO DON’T MISS OUT !!!

Scholarships to students already in tertiary

education. As the end of the school term is just

around the corner, we thought it would be a good

time for students to start work on their Study

Award applications.

The Keystone Study Awards are one of the most

premium scholarships offered in the property and

construction sector and come with three years of

financial assistance, together with mentoring and

networking opportunities, across all our sponsor

family.

The application process can be completed in

hardcopy or accessed and completed on our

website, after Friday 30 June 2017

Closing date for Study Awards is 31 August 2017
