The Martin Harris Centre is fully accessible. There are 2 entrances, one on Bridgeford Street and the other on Coupland Street which has a ramp. Both entrances to the building have auto-opening doors. There is a level floor entrance to the performance space. There are wheelchair spaces in the performance space. The performance space is fitted with induction loops.

rIsk assessMenT

We have conducted a risk assessment which will be supplied as part of the Teacher’s resource Pack but we would recommend that group leaders visit The Martin Harris Centre prior to their visit and conduct a site risk assessment.

TIMIng

We recommend you leave adequate time for travel. Please aim to arrive at least ten minutes before the performance is due to start.

The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama is situated at the heart of The University of Manchester’s campus, behind The Manchester Museum, which is located on Oxford Road. It is approximately 1 mile south of the city centre.

By Bus: Direct routes to Oxford Road run regularly from Piccadilly Gardens in Central Manchester. The Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama at The University of Manchester is served by many bus routes. For local bus information check www.gmpte.gov.uk or call 0161 228 7811.

By Train: Oxford Road station is a ten minute walk away. Train enquiries 08457 484950.

By Coach: On arrival coaches can drop off on Oxford Road (outside Cafe Muse) or Higher Cambridge Street but drivers will then need to find an area to park their coach.

WhaT WILL The InTeracTIve PerForMance InvoLve?

John Hegley will enchant the children with his poetic genius and silliness, delivered in his unique performance style. Rhyming expertise is interspersed with simple ditties that will have everyone singing along in a performance with lots of audience participation!

The 40 minute interactive performance will provide a safe, fun learning opportunity for the children, delivered by a highly commended poet.

John’s heritage is both French and English and he reads versions of his poems in both languages.

It is a tried and tested performance which has already been delivered to several primary schools across the country.

This specially adapted performance will be themed around the Living World exhibition at The Manchester Museum.

WhaT are The LearnIng oBjecTIves and ouTcoMes?

This event is tailored to complement Key Stage 3 Learning Objectives.

Performance:

• The chance to hear and experience poetry in an actual performance by a professional poet.

• They will get an insider’s perspective on authorial intent/author’s craft/author’s viewpoint and how it is conveyed.

• To analyse how writers use linguistic and literacy features to shape and influence meaning.

• Back in school they can then respond, analyse and evaluate the poetry they have heard.

• The experience of being ‘on campus’ at The University of Manchester.

Since 1994 National Poetry Day has engaged millions of people with poetry through a range of events and activities for people young and old throughout the country. It is intended to give a focus to events and stimulate attempts at writing in schools and amongst others who need that extra spur to awaken their creativity.

Natural History/Living Worlds Exhibition:

During the performance John Hegley will select objects from the Museum’s Living Worlds Exhibition and ingeniously craft poetry from them.

To enhance the natural history learning objectives from your visit why not tie in a trip to The Living Worlds Exhibition whilst you are on campus?
