ASABE S572 Droplet Size Classification

The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) developed the ASABE S572 standard to measure and interpret spray quality from tips.

Spray Quality* Size of Droplets Retention on Difficult to Wet Leaves Used for Drift Potential

Very Fine Small Excellent Exceptions High

Fine Very Good Good Cover

Medium Good Most Products

Coarse Moderate Systemic Herbicides

Very Coarse Poor Soil Herbicides

Extremely Coarse Large Very Poor Liquid Fertilizer Low

*Always read the pesticide label to determine which spray quality is required.

7

JOHN DEERE SPRAY PARTSSpray nozzle information

The ASABE S572 standard uses six droplet classification categories, six of which are common for agriculture and horticulture:

Very Fine , Fine , Medium , Coarse , Very Coarse and Extremely Coarse .

Most agrochemical applications recommend a fine, medium, or coarse spray.

Fine sprays provide enhanced retention for directed spraying on the target including:

•Foliar-acting weed control

•Contact-acting fungicides and insecticides

Medium sprays are the most widely used spray type.

•Used by default by most applicators when spray quality is not defined by the label.

•Systemic-acting fungicides, insecticides and herbicides

Coarse sprays are used with systemic, residual, and soil-applied herbicides.

Suggested minimum spray heights — Flat fan spray nozzles

Droplet sizes are expressed in microns. One micron equals .001 millimeters. Other than the effects of the specific material being sprayed, the four major factors affecting droplet size are:

• Spraynozzlestyle—flatfan,floods,cones,discs,cores• Capacity—lowflowproducessmallerdroplets;highflowproduces

larger droplets• Pressure—lowpressureproduceslargerdroplets;highpressureproducessmallerdroplets• Spraypatterntype—eliptical(flatfannozzle),band(banded/floodnozzle),conical(cone

JOHN DEERE SPRAY PARTSWear and Chemical Compatibility

CERAMIC (C) — Highly resistant to abrasive and corrosive chemistry, and pro vides superior wear resistance in abrasive applications and high pressures. Nozzle orifices are made of pink sintered ceramic and reinforced by special oxides.

POLYACETAL (P) — Provides good resistance to most chemicals and superior resistance to wear with most agricultural chemistry. Susceptible to strong mineral acids and a few organic solvents. Resistance to most alkalis is excellent. Organic solvents usually cause slight swelling without any other harmful effect.

POLYVINLYIDENE FLUORIDE (PVDF) — Should be used with acid-based agricultural defoliation chemistry. Good resistance to wear. Resists many reagents and high temperatures (up to 300º F , 148º C). Susceptible to high temper-atures above water boiling (210º F , 98º C) in combination with concentrated sulfuric and nitric acids. Preferred in industrial spraying applications.

STAINLESS STEEL (SS) — Good resistance to chemicals and average wear resistance.

BRASS (B) — Average resistance to most chemistry and poor wear resistance. Susceptible to corrosion, especially with fertilizers.

Ultra Low-drift Air (ULA)

ULTRA low drift — The ULA nozzle with dual air-eduction technology produces large air-filled droplets, optimizing drift control and target coverage. The wide 120-degree spray angle enables the boom height to be lowered to further reduce drift. The UL is ideal for use with pre-emergence and broad-spectrum systemic products. Unlike other air-aspirated nozzles, the UL is precision molded completely out of polyacetal. Independent tests show that polyacetal wears up to two times longer than stainless steel, providing superior wear resistance. The UL’s small, compact size reduces the chance for breakage.

• Creates air-filled droplets which significantly reduces spray drift• Wide 120° spray angle enables boom height to be lowered to further decrease drift• Engineered for superior spray uniformity at all pressures• Ideal use with pre-emergence and broad spectrum products• Precision-molded in tough and durable polyacetal• Small, compact size reduces the chances to of accidental breakage
