It is available from your Parts Depot in the following quantities: Part No. 4098522 4098532 409240 Description 5 gallons 6 quarts Hose for 5 gallon package Use only battery grade sulfuric acid electro- lyte with 1.265 specific gravity plus or minus 0.005 corrected to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. IMPORT ANT: Be sure to remove battery from tractor before filling with electrolyte. This will prevent accidental damage to tractor in case of acid spill. Use special precaution when filling this small battery. With battery removed from tractor, pour in electrolyte slowly until visible in the bot- tom of the filling tube. Then charge at 15 amps for 10 minutes or 7 amps for 30 minutes. DO NOT EXCEED RECOMMENDED CHARGING RATE. After Charging, add electrolyte until level with circular split ledge in filler tube. PREDELIVERY CHECK LIST

IMPORTANT: If it is necessary to raise or tilt the tractor for service or installing attachments,tilt only to the right side or rearward as instructed on page 12 in the operator's manual.

[=:J Install steering wheel.

~ Install battery.

Clean and dry battery exterior and positionin battery case. Tighten hold-down wing nuts onlyfinger tight. Coat battery posts and cable clampswith petroleum jelly.

1. Attach solenoid cable to the positive (+)battery terminal with 5/16 x 1/2-inch bolt and nut.

2. Slide rubber boot on cable until positivebattery terminal is completely covered.

3. Attach ground cable to negative (-) terminalwith 1/4 x 1/2-inch carriage bolt and nut.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to connect solenoidcable to positive battery terminal and groundcable to negative terminal as shown. Reversingthese connections may burn out fuse on rectifierpanel or possibi Iy damage other electrical com-ponents.

C:=J Connect rectifier wire.

The rectifier wire is disconnected for ship-ment to protect the rectifiers and fuse fromburning out if the tractor is started manuallybefore the battery is installed. After chargingand connecting battery, connect rectifier wiresat connector "A" on rectifier panel. Be sureconnectors ate pushed together firmly.

oCheck transmission oil level.

DRAINPLUG

Remove oil level (filler) plug on front oftrans-axle and check oil level.

When required, use a pressure oil can to addAM30200 Transmission Lubricant until oil leaksout filler hole. Be sure tractor is on a level sur-face.

John Deere SAE 90 Gear Lubricant or anequivalent SCL multipurpose-type gear oil alsocan be used in the transmission.

oCheck engine crankcase oil level.

Park the tractor on a level surface and stopthe engine. Unscrew the threaded dipstick cap andremove the dipstick.

If necessary, add John Deere Torq-Gard en-gine oil or its equivalent of the proper viscosity(see chart below) to bring oil level up to the full, ,F" mark on the dipstick when the dipstick capis screwed in tight.

NOTE: Oil should not be over fulllF" mark.

DCheck tire inflation. Inflate front tires to12 psi if tractor is equipped with rotarymower. Inflate to 20 psi if equipped withsnow thrower or front blade. Inflate reartires to 6 psi. Use low pressure tire gaugeto check pressure.

oFill gas tank with regular grade or non-leaded gasoline that has an octane rating of90 or higher.

DStart engine electrically and manually (seepage 3). Place shift lever in neutral and setparking brake before starting engine man-ually. Check tractor performance. If anydifficulty is encountered, see "TroubleShooting" section of operator's manual.

DClean and polish tractor. Touch upscratches.

DIf tractor is equipped with attachments,adjust as detailed in attachment operator'smanual.

DAttach operator's manual to tractor.

DELIVERY CHECK LIST

DAdvise customer to change tractor crank-case oil after first two hours of operation.

DInstruct customer in safe operation oftractor and attachments. '

D Explain recommended daily and periodicservice.

D Explain operating adjustments as coveredin operator's manual.

D Stress the importance of using only JohnDeere or engine manufacturer's parts.

DBe sure customer has his operator's man-ual.

DAdvise customer never to use ethyl, white,or high-test gasoline.

Install nut and tighten to a maximum torque of 10to 12 ft-Ibs.

Press cap into steering wheel hub with leaping deerhorizontal when front wheels are positioned straightahead.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to remove battery fromtractor before filling with electrolyte. This will preventaccidental damage to tractor in case of acid spill.

o Install Battery

NEGATIVE (-)TERf'1J.NAL

Clean and dry battery exterior and position in bat-tery case. Tighten hold-down wing nuts only fingertight. Coat battery posts and cable clamps with petro-leum jelly.

1. Attach solenoid cable to the positive (+) batteryterminal with 5/16 x 1/2-inch bolt and nut.

2. Slide rubber boots on solenoid cable to com-pletely cover terminals on each end of cable.

3. Attach ground cable to negative (-) terminalwith 1/4 x 1/2-inch carrlaqe bolt and nut.

IMPORTANT: Be sure to connect solenoid cable topositive battery terminal and ground cable to negativeterminal as shown. Reversing these connections mayburn out fuse on rectifier panel or possibly damageother electrical components.

o Connect Rectifier Wire

The rectifier wire is disconnected for shipment toprotect the rectifiers and fuse from burning out if thetractor is started manually before the battery is in-stalled. After charging and connecting battery, con-nect rectifier wires at connector "A" on rectifier pan-el. Be sure connectors are pushed together firmly.

o Check Transmission Oil Level

Remove oil level (filler) plug on front of transaxleand check oil level.

When required, use a pressure oil can to addAM30200 Transmission Lubricant until oil leaks outfiller hole. Be sure tractor is on a level surface.

John Deere SAE 90 Gear Lubricant or an equiva-lent SCL multipurpose-type gear oil also can be usedin the transmission.

o Check Engine Crankcase Oil Level

Park the tractor on a level surface, stop the engine,and raise the hood. Wipe dust and dirt from aroundthe dipstick. Unscrew cap and pull out dipstick tocheck the oil level.

If necessary, add John Deere Torq-Gard engine oilor its equivalent of the proper viscosity (see chart be-low) to bring oil level up to the full "F" mark on thedipstick when the dipstick is screwed in tight. If oilother than Torq-Gard is used, see page 9 of opera-tor's manual for specifications.

NOTE: Oil should not be over full "F" mark.

o Check Tire Inflation DELIVERY CHECK LISTInflate front tires to 12 psi if tractor is equipped with

rotary mower. Inflate to 20 psi if equipped with snowthrower or front blade. Inflate rear tires to 6 psi. Uselow pressure tire gauge to check pressure.

o Advise customer to change tractor crankcase oilafter first two hours of operation.

o Fill Gas Tank with Gasolineo Instruct customer in safe operation of tractor and

attachments. Point out safety precautions on in-side front cover of operator's manual.

Use regular grade or non-leaded gasoline that hasan octane rating of 90 or higher.

o Start Engine

D Explain recommended daily and periodic service.See page 8.

Start engine electrically and manually (see pages 4and 5). Place shift lever in neutral and set parkingbrake before starting engine manually. Check tractorperformance. If any difficulty is encountered, see"Trouble Shooting" section of operator's manual.

o Explain operating adjustments as covered in op-erator's manual.

o Stress the importance of using only John Deereor engine manufacturer's parts.

o Check Tractor AppearanceD Advise customer never to use ethyl, white, or

high-test gasoline.
