SPRING 2012

REOCCUPYING AN ABANDONED BLOCK OF ROW HOMES IN BALTI-MORE TO FORM A SELF SUFFICIENT MIXED USE COMMUNITY.

AROUND 80% OF THE NEIGHBOR-HOOD IS ABANDONED AND A HAVEN FOR CRIME. DESPITE A RICH HIS-TORY, THIS PARK FRONT BLOCK HAS FALLEN INTO A STATE OF RUIN FOR THE PAST 20 YEARS.

THE DESIGN EMPLOYS COST EF-FICIENT ADAPTIVE REUSE OF THE EXISTING STRUCTURES AND DES-IGNATES THEM WITH NEW FUNC-TIONS. ABANDONED ROW HOMES BECOME THE PROPERTY OF THE CITY THROUGH EMINENT DOMAIN LAWS AND ARE SOLD FOR AS LITTLEAS ONE DOLLAR. VACANT LOTS LEFT BEHIND FROM DEMOLISHED ROW HOMES ARE USED FOR URBAN FARMING, PARKS, AND OTHER PUB-LIC AMENITIES.

DEVELOPERS CONCEIVE HOUSING WITH A PARK WITHIN EACH BLOCK. INTENDED TO ATTRACT LABORERS AND CRAFTSMEN, THE INNER PARKS HAVE ACCESS ALLEYS AND WORKSHOPS BEHIND THE HOMES.

HARLEM PARK 2011.

INTERSTATE 40 HAS CUT OFF THE SOUTHERNMOST BLOCK. THE CENTRAL PARK HAS BEEN DIVIDED BY A ROAD WITH A CENTRAL SCHOOL. DENSITY HAS DRAMATICALLY DECREASED. INSTEAD OF PARKS AND WORKSHOPS, THE CENTERS OF THE BLOCKS ARE OVERGROWN DUMPING GROUNDS.

PUBLIC USAGE OF UNCLAIMED VOIDS.

A HIGH DENSITY PREFABRICATED “MICROCOSM” HOUSING COMMU-NITY.

SPRAWL AND POOR ZONING HAVE CREATED A COMMUNITY WITH LIT-TLE SENSE OF PLACE AND LESS SENSE OF COMMUNITY.

PREFABRICATION ALLOWS FOR A HIGH-ER QUALITY END PRODUCT AND LOW-ERS CONSTRUCTION COSTS. SHARED SOLAR COLLECTORS PROVIDE ENERGY WHILE EXCESS IS SOLD BACK TO THE POWER COMPANY AT A PROFITABLE RATE. RAIN WATER IS COLLECTED AND STORED AS GREY-WATER IN AN UN-DERGROUND CISTERN. BY PROVIDING FOUR DIFFERENT UNIT TYPES (EACH AIMED AT A DIFFERENT DEMOGRAPHIC) THE COMPLEX WILL ATTRACT A DIVERSE GROUP AND BE A TRUE MICROCOSM OF THE LARGER SOCIETY LIVING IN HARMO-NY WITH NATURE.

THROUGH A MIXED DEMOGRAPH-IC, SHARED SPACES, AND OPPOR-TUNITIES FOR INTERACTIVE SUS-TAINABLE PRACTICES, A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS CAN BECOME A MICROCOSM COMMUNITY LIV-ING IN HARMONY WITH THE LAND.

The Dogtrot house: This vernacular typology con-sists of two cores with a breezeway between them.

SITE BUILT COMPONENTS INCLUDING POURED IN PLACE CONCRETE FOUNDATIONS, UTILITY LINES, DECK COLUMNS, AND LAND-SCAPE FEATURES SUCH AS THE HEARTH ARE CONSTRUCTED.

THE LOWER MODULES ARRIVE BY TRUCK AND ARE CRANED INTO PLACE. EACH MODULE IS HOOKED UP TO NECESSARY UTILITIES

THE UPPER MODULES ARE PLACED PERPENDICULAR TO THE LOWER MODULES TO SPAN ACROSS THE BREEZEWAY. THIS UTILIZES THE EXTRA STRUCTURE NEEDED IN THE MODULAR SYSTEM IN THE FINAL ARRANGEMENT. THE FINISHED CEILING OF THE LOWER LEVEL ARE INSTALLED. THE BACK DECKS ARRIVE AND ARE PLACED AS COMPLETED MODULES WHILE THE FRONT DECKS ARE COMPOSED OF A PREFAB-RICATED STICKS AND PLANES SYSTEM OF RAILING AND PRIVACY SCREENS THAT ARE ASSEMBLED ON SITE. FINALLY, THE FOUR UNITS TO THE SOUTH HAVE THEIR ROOF MODULES CRANED ON (THE WESTERN SIX UNITS HAVE THE ROOF INCLUDED IN THE UP-PER MODULE).

THE SKYSCRAPER IS A TYPOLOGY MET WITH SKEPTICISM WITHIN THE EURO-PEAN CITY. HANS KOLLHOFF’S MASTER PLAN FOR ALEXANDERPLATZ WAS USED AS A PREMISE AND GROUPS OF STU-DENTS DESIGNED EACH OF THE PRO-POSED SKYSCRAPERS IN THE UNFUL-FILLED MASTER PLAN. AN ADDITIONAL GOAL WAS TO EXPERIMENT BY PLAC-ING THE NON-TRADITIONAL PROGRAMS OF A LIBRARY AND A SCHOOL INTO THE SKYSCRAPER.

THE BASE OF THE BUILDING HOUSES THE LIBRARY. WHILE KEEPING WITH THE FOOTPRINT OF KOLLHOFF’S MASTER PLAN, THE BASE IS BROKEN UP INTO THREE PIECES WHICH DEFINE THREE VOIDS. THESE PROVIDE TRANSITION SPACE THROUGH WHICH TO ENTER.

THE TOWER HOLDS THE VARIED PRO-GRAMS REQUIRED FOR A SCHOOL. IN-STEAD OF A UNIFORM FLOOR PLAN, EACH GROUP OF PROGRAMS IS ORGA-NIZED AROUND A UNIQUE SERIES OF VOID SPACES WHICH PROVIDE A VERTI-CAL CONNECTION.

IN THIS ELECTIVE COURSE THE CLASS WORKED COLLECTIVELY TO EXPERI-MENT WITH FABRIC FORMED CONCRETE AND CONSTRUCT A PERMANENT SEAT-ING AREA ON THE BAUHAUS GROUNDS. THE CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES BE-CAME THE DRIVER FOR THE PROCESS.

FIRST EACH STUDENT EXPERIMENTED IN CREATING A SMALL FABRIC FORMED TILE. AFTER BEING EVALUATED THESE NEGATIVES OF THE ORIGINAL POSITIVE MOLD WERE IN TURN USED TO MOLD THE FINAL SEATING CUBES. THIS RE-SULTED IN CONCAVE SEATING SURFAC-ES.

THE CUBE CAN THEN BE ROLLED, AL-LOWING THE USER TO SELECT WHICH SURFACE TO SIT UPON. THE HOLLOW CENTER REDUCES THE WEIGHT WHILE NOT COMPROMISING THE INTEGRITY OF THE CUBE.

THE SOLAR DECATHLON SERVES TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT SOLAR EN-ERGY AS WELL AS FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT AND SHOWCASING OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES.

10.9 KW PHOTOVOLTAIC ARRAY GENERATING TWICE THE TOTAL DAILY ENERGY USE. THE HOUSE IS TRANSPORTED USING CUSTOM BOOGIE AND GOOSENECK ATTACHMENTS AND REMOVABLE CROSS BRACING. THE DUAL CORE DESIGN IS BASED ON THE EAST TENNESSEE VERNACULAR, THE CANTILEVER BARN.

AS A MEMBER OF THE INTERIORS TEAM, I PARTICIPATED IN DESIGN DEVEL-OPMENT AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS AND SHOP DRAWINGS FOR THE INTERIOR CABINETRY CORES, SPECIFICALLY IN THE BATHROOM, AND FULLY DESIGNED THE DRAINAGE FLOORS IN THE BOTH ENTRYWAYS AND BOTH THE BATHROOM AND MECHANICAL ROOM.

AS A MEMBER OF THE CONSTRUCTION TEAM MY ROLE IN THE SOLAR DE-CATHOLON COMPETITION WAS THE ASSEMBLY OF HOUSE COMPONENTS ON SITE IN DC

THE MAIN STRUCTURE ARRIVES FROM THE STEEL FABRICATOR TO THE WAREHOUSE RENTED AS THE LIVING LIGHT WORKSHOP. THE TEMPORARY CROSS BRACING IS REMOVED.

WOOD BLOCKING AND JACKS ARE INSTALLED AS FOOTINGS TO ALLOW THE DISASSEMBLY OF THE TRAILER COMPONENTS FROM THE HOUSE. THE SECONDARY STRUCTURE OF SPECIAL METAL STUDS WHICH RESIST THERMAL BRIDGING. SHEATHING OF PLY-WOOD AND BACKER BOARD IS INSTALLED.

THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS ARE THEN BEGUN. PLUMBING SUP-PLY LINES ARE RUN FROM SUPPLY TANKS TO THE WATER HEAT-ER AND THEN TO FIXTURES. DRAINAGE PIPES ARE RUN TO SEPA-RATE WASTE TANKS. VENTILATION FOR THE DRAINS IS RUN SO AS TO BE HIDDEN BEHIND THE PARKLEX FACADE. DUCTS ARE IN-STALLED TO ALLOW PASSIVE HEATING AND COOLING BETWEEN THE AIR GAPS OF THE GLAZING SYSTEMS. ENERGY RECOVERY VENTILATORS AND MINI-SPLIT HEAT PUMPS HELP CONTRIBUTE TO AN EFFICIENT SYSTEM.

REMAINING FIXTURES ARE INSTALLED ALONG WITH INTERIOR FINISH SURFACES AND CABINETRY. THE STOREFRONT WIN-DOWS ARE INSTALLED. PARKLEX WOOD PANELS ARE MOUNTED TO Z-CLIPS ON THE OUTER FACADE. THE ROOF-RACK IS COM-PLETED AND PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS ARE INSTALLED. ELEC-TRICAL SYSTEMS ARE HOOKED UP AND COMPLETED.

THE CANTILEVERING PHOTOVOLTAICS AND WATER TANKS ARE REMOVED IN PREPARATION FOR TRANSIT. THE TEMPORARY CROSS BRACING IS REATTACHED AND THE TRAILER COMPO-NENTS ARE BOLTED TOGETHER IN A MOMENT CONNECTION. THE FOOTINGS ARE REMOVED AND THE HOUSE BEGINS IT’S LONG JOURNEY TO WASHINGTON D.C.

UPON ARRIVAL AT THE NATIONAL MALL, JACKS AND BLOCKING IS AGAIN USED FOR FOOTINGS. THE TEMPORARY CROSS BRACING AND TRAILER COMPONENTS ARE AGAIN REMOVED. THE REMAINING PHOTOVOLTA-ICS ARE ATTACHED AND THE EXTERIOR WATER TANKS AND CONDENSER UNITS ARE PLACED SO AS TO BE COVERED BY THE DECK, RAMPS, AND GREEN ROOF PLANTING. DECK COMPONENTS ARE INSTALLED MODU-LARLY AND ARRIVE SEPARATELY. ONCE THE HOUSE IS CLEANED AND TESTED THE COMPETITION WILL BEGIN.

THIS ZEN RETREAT IS SET ON THE BROW OF A “BALD” MOUNTAINTOP AND CAN SERVE UP TO TWENTY GUESTS AT A TIME.

AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE RUSH OF MODERN LIFE, THE ZEN CEN-TERS OFFERS ONENESS AND PEACE WITH NATURE.

THE BUILDINGS EMBODY THE ZEN PRINCIPLES OF HARMONY AND SERVES TO TEACH BY EXAMPLE TO THE OCCUPANTS. RATHER THAN SEEKING THE GLORY OF THE SUM-MIT, THE BUILDING IS SITED ALONG THE BROW. TO REACH THE SITE, THE PILGRIMS MUST HIKE FROM A NEIGHBORING MOUNTAIN, AND DO NOT DISCOVER THE BUILDING UNTIL THEY HAVE PASSED THE HUCKLE-BERRY KNOB SUMMIT.

THE LOW PROFILE OF THE BUILDING, ALLOWS UNHAMPERED VIEWS FOR MILES INTO THE DISTANCE, ALLOW-ING VISITORS TO VIEW THE BUSTLE OF DISTANT CITIES IN CONTRAST TO THE PEACE OF THE SURROUNDING COUNTRY.

SITED NEAR HIS FAMOUS CROWN HALL, THE MIES VAN DER ROHE MU-SEUM EXHIBITS WORKS TO EDU-CATE VISITORS ON IIT’S ARCHITECT. THE BUILDING IS LAID OUT BASED ON THE MUSEUM CIRCULATION.

VISITORS ENTER THROUGH A LOBBY INTO A THEATER TO WATCH A BRIEF MOVIE CLIP. NEXT THEY PROCEED THOUGH THE CONNECTING PAS-SAGE TO THE FIRST SET OF EXHIB-ITS AND THEN ON THOUGH ANOTH-ER GLAZED PASSAGE TO THE FINAL TWO EXHIBITS. THE LARGE SERVICE WING RUNS ALONGSIDE THE GAL-LERIES AND ANCHORS TO AN EXIST-ING FOOTPATH.

THE GALLERIES HAVE AN EMPHASIS ON NATURAL LIGHTING. VERTICAL WINDOW SLITS AND CRUCIFORM SKYLIGHTS EMPHASIZE THE PATH OF THE STRUCTURAL MODULE WITH LINES OF LIGHT.

THE THREE MAIN MASSES OF THE BUILDING ARE SITUATED SO THAT THE APPEAR AS IF TO INTERLOCK WITH HELMUT JAHN’S STATE STREET VILLAGE ACROSS THE STREET.

IN ORDER TO RELATE TO THE DRASTICALLY DIFFERENT SITUATIONS SURROUNDING THE SITE, THE DECKER ADDITION IS SITED SO AS TO BALANCE THE HISTORIC HOMEWOOD HOUSE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE CIRCLE. IN DOING SO THE ADDITION REENFORCES ONE OF THE PRIMARY AXES OF THE CAMPUS AND CITY. TO KEEP WITH THE CONTEXT IT IS NECESSARY FOR A LARGE AMOUNT OF THE BUILDING TO BE BELOW GRADE (JUST AS WAS THE CASE IN THE ORIGINAL LIBRARY). LIGHT WELLS AND TERRACED GARDENS ALLOW LIGHT AND AIR TO THE LOWER LEVELS AND ALLOWS FOR A SECURE OUTDOOR SPACE TO BRING LIBRARY BOOKS OUTDOORS.

THE DESIGN SEEKS TO RESPECT AND INTEGRATE WITH THE EXISTING HIS-TORICAL FABRIC OF JOHN HOPKINS. THE FRESHMAN QUAD LACKS DEFINI-TION, BUT WITH THE ADDITION OF THE NEW BUILDING TWO DISTINCT SPAC-ES ARE DEFINED. THE UPPER LEVEL SERVES AS AN EXHIBITION SPACE FOR THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOP-MENT TAKING PLACE IN THE NEARBY SCIENCE BUILDINGS OF THE NEWLY DEFINED “L” SHAPED QUAD. DEPLOY-ABLE DISPLAY PANELS ALLOW FOR FLEXIBLE ARRANGEMENT OF THE SPACE. THE LOWER LEVEL CONTAINS A FOOD VENDER TO SERVE THE NEAR-BY FRESHMAN DORMITORIES MAKING UP THE OTHER NEWLY DEFINED QUAD.

THE CENTER FURTHER SERVES AS A PERMANENT EXHIBITION OF SUSTAIN-ABLE TECHNOLOGIES. THE SAW-TOOTH ROOF ALLOWS FOR NATURAL LIGHTING WHILE TRANSPARENT PHOTOVOLTAIC PANELS CAN BE MANUALLY ADJUSTED BY HUMAN-POWERED HAND CRANKS TO CLOSE OFF THE LOWER LEVEL AND COLLECT RAIN WATER. THE WATER-FALL AND PUMP, WHILE NOT GENERAT-ING ANY NET ENERGY GAIN, EXHIBIT THE USAGE OF WATER TURBINES.

AS HOUSING FOR VISITING POETS, THE SIX UNITS PROVIDE BOTH PRI-VATE AND COLLABORATIVE SPACES TO FACILITATE WRITING.

THE REPETITION OF PARTY WALLS AND CURTAIN WALLS IS BASED ON THE STRUCTURE OF THE HAIKU. WHILE NOT LITERALLY FOLLOWING THE PATTERN OF FIVE, SEVEN, FIVE, THE WALLS SET UP A RHYTHM OF THEIR OWN. THE IDEA OF THREE LINES IS BROUGHT INTO PLAY WITH THREE BUILDINGS AND THREE LEV-ELS OR REALMS.

THE LOWER EARTH REALM ALLOWS THE POET TO OCCUPY THE GROUND PLANE AND IS OPEN AIR. THE MID-DLE REALM OFFERS AN OVERVIEW OF THE LANDSCAPE AND OPPORTU-NITIES FOR COLLABORATION WITH NEIGHBORS. THE SKY REALM FO-CUSES ON THE HORIZON AND VIEWS INTO THE DISTANCE.
