confluencecon>flu>ence combines art, science and technology to take a look'behind the scenes' of the Biosphere. Live online environmental datawas collected from locations along the River Torridge, using remotesensors called Ecoids, and the four project artists have used the datastreaming from these to create new hybrid artworks, as well asworking with eight schools and communities along the river tovisualise aspects of their local environments. This has all been madepossible by the unique partnership of University of Plymouth's i-DAT(Institute of Digital Arts and Technology), The North Devon BiosphereFoundation, Beaford Arts and Appledore Arts.

5metre portable/inflatable Go Dome you will be able tosee visualisations created with the schools using the environmentaldata gathered. Alongside the dome, St Mary's Hall will play host tonew work created by the artists.

Tidal Forces

Simon Warner & Simon Ryder

Simon Warner says “I am interested in the dynamic nature of rivers;we tame their wildness at our peril. On the Torridge I amparticularly fascinated by the rhythm of the tides. I have also beenseeking out viewpoints over the river, trying to articulate therelationship between what we appreciate at a distance, and what isactually happening at the waterline.”

teamed up to create a new work. They placed cameras and data recorders on a raft in the tidalstream letting the tides float them up and down the estuary overthe course of a day.

Simon Ryder, Tranquility - Walking through the Torridge Valley in searchof tranquility and inspiration, free from the chatter of moderntechnology, the rhythm of my footsteps allowing my mind towander...but...can you measure this? How might my personalimpressions (measured and turned into digital data) fit in with theenvironmental data from the scientists? What might this look like? So,with mobile data recorder in hand, a blog to show where I have been(www. .com) I set out...in search of Tranquility.

Simon Warner is a landscape filmmaker and photographer based inYorkshire. Solo exhibitions include A Guide to Yorkshire Rivers atImpressions Gallery and Leaving Home at the Brontë ParsonageMuseum. Active in museum education he also lectures on earlyphotography. Simon held a Research Fellowship with NESTA 2006-8,and was long-listed for the Northern Art Prize 2011. Jon Pigott is a sonic artist who has presented his work nationally andinternationally. He currently teaches at Cardiff School of Art andDesign. His practice and research looks at sound and technologythrough electromechanical and kinetic sound sculptures. By openingthe black box of technology and exploring the intrinsic musicality ofthe materials within, Jon's work explores past technologies, andcritiques present ones used for creating music and sound.www. .co.uk

Antony Lyons draws on a hybrid art and science background, producinglandscape-based sculptural works and video/sound installations. Hisapproach is grounded in fieldwork, ecological understanding anddetailed research. In the past three years, he has undertaken creativeresidencies in England, Ireland and the USA. On-going artisticcollaborations include Deiseal - in Ireland - and the UK-based NOVAgroup of artists. He is an associate of the PLaCE Research Centre,in Bristol. www. .net

During the Confluence project, have assumed theroles of 'Green and Geek' respectively, leaving no stone unturned intheir investigations of the relationships between data, community, artand the natural environment. Focusing on the river itself, and on batsas a sensitive indicator species, they have developed ways ofcommunicating ecological information in tangible, accessible andinspiring ways. Their collaborative work weaves together a range oftechnologies, local voices and a year of creative explorations of the

Torridge, with the aim of fostering more intimate connections.

Karen Hawkins makes site -specific work for public places, likeschools, festivals, libraries, parks and public events. The projects areoften designed as collaborations with the community. Takinginspiration from our maritime heritage and the sea, Karen's hilltopinstallation celebrates this years' LANDMARKS theme. Referencing thechalk drawings of the Dorset Downs, the 3 Galleons image reflectsthe culture and identity of the estuary. Karen invites you to meet her, share some refreshments and launch a paper boat at the private viewon the Quay on Thursday 7 June 1900 – 2030.Sponsored by Tapeley Park and The Bar Restaurant at Instow withstudents from University College, Falmouth.

To celebrate the fishing industry and marine life, you can help makean installation of underwater fish, visible under the sea as the tidesubmerges the work. As more people get involved the installation willgrow to form a 'shoal', an impressive sight in any ocean.www. .org.uk
