Guitar Instruction: The essence of traditional Irish music is the melody and these melodies (or tunes) were typically unaccompanied until the late 1960’s, at which time the guitar was carefully introduced to the genre via the influence of the folk revival. Since then, guitars have been a common fixture within the music, but the melody continues to be the focal point. Jeff teaches concepts and techniques that focus on how to tastefully accompany Irish tunes in a way that respects the melody and the tradition of the music. What’s more he offers insight into what is expected of guitarists that attend that most integral part of the Irish music tradition, the ‘Session.’ Jeff offers lessons both privately in the Austin TX metropolitan area and in public workshops at festivals and music camps. These are geared toward the individual with a prior knowledge of guitar basics. Some of the topics that may be covered are: - Chords for DADGBE and DADGAD tunings - Basic rhythms for jigs, reels, hornpipes, etc. - Picking and strumming techniques - Session etiquette - Session dynamics for the accompanist - Rhythmic variations - Transitioning between chords - Walking baselines - Modal accompaniment Jeff has taught at the following events: Austin Friends of Traditional Music Mid-Winter Festival Austin TX Austin Celtic Festival Austin TX
