Preface

Department of Tamil Studies

The School of Languages was founded as part of the PG extension centre of the university of

Madras. In the beginning the Tamil studies formed part of the School of Languages. The

Department of Tamil Studies started functioning as a separate Department from 31.03.1988 under the

headship of Professor Dr. M. Ramalingam (Ezhil Muthalvan), a renowned scholar and Sahitya

Akademi Award Winner. He headed the Department till 30.06.2000 and Dr. Radha Chellappan

took of the Department from 01.07.2000. She was the Head of the Department till 30.06.2008. Dr.

A. Alice took charge of the Department from 01.07.2008 and continued upto 26.09.2011. Dr. K. Raja

resumed the charge as the Head, from 26.09.2011 and remained till 27.03.2013. Dr. B. Mathivanan a

renowned scholar took charge of the Department from 27.03.2013 and headed the Dept till

28.03.2016. Dr. U. Alibava, a renowned scholar and the President Awardee, is heading the

Department from 28.03.2016 to till date. He is also the first illustrious alumni of the same

department.

From the beginning, the Department has been functioning as a high level academic centre

imparting M.Phil. and Ph.D. courses. The M.A. programme was started in the year 1996 in

Autonomous mode.

Objectives:

A well design syllabi is put into practice which meets the international standards

which incorporates Gender Equality, Environment, Sustainability and Human

Values.

The Syllabus incorporates the contents which are needed for all the important

competitive examinations like UPSC, TNPSC, NET JRFAL, SET etc.,.

The Department has been organizing seminars by inviting eminent Tamil Poets

and Scholars very often to enhance the knowledge of Research Scholars and PG

students.

It admits students from different undergraduate backgrounds who come from

poor and rural backgrounds.

A good number of books and research articles are published in National and

International levels.

Students from other states are given training in Basic Tamil.

Coaching classes are conducted for the students to take part in the competitive

examinations like UPSC, TNPSC, NET JRFAL, SET etc.,

Students are encouraged to update their knowledge through various online

portals.

Students are well trained to organize the events collectively and develop the

leadership qualities.

Students are sent to the English Department to develop their English

Communication Skills.

For Physical Fitness and spiritual development (Yoga), students are sent to

Physical Education Department.

Moral, Ethical and Human Values are taught to the students for

development.

Vision and Mission

‘An Authentic Version of Bharathidsan’s works with critical notes’ is to be

prepared with the supporting the experts.

A dedicated Separate Linguistics department may be started.

‘An Authentic Version of Tholkkappiyam and Tholkkappiyam Commentaries’ is

to be prepared with the support of the Experts.

‘Translation of Technical Terms in Tamil’ is to be carried out.

A Dictionary is to be prepared for Ancient Tamil Literature.

Example: Meaning of the Word, Meaning of the Phrase, Grammatical Note and

Translation in English.

An Encyclopedia is to be prepared in various fields (Folklore, Music, Drama, Art,

Culture, History, Civilization, Dialects and Encyclopedia of Chozha Region).

Anthologies may be prepared in different Tamil areas with the support of

Experts.

A book is to be prepared in Scientific Tamil with the support of Experts.

Publishing the Palm Leaf Manuscripts related to Grammar with the support of

Tanjore Saraswathi Mahal International Library.

Publishing the Palm Leaf Manuscripts related to Medicine, with the support of

Tanjore Saraswathi Mahal International Library.

Publishing the Chozha Regional Literature with the support of Tanjore

Saraswathi Mahal International Library.

‘Rare Paper Manuscript’ is to be published with the support of the Experts.

Creating Chair for Tamil and Philosophy with the support of the Experts.

Creating Chair for Tamil and Religion with the support of the Experts.

Creating Chair for Thirukkural with the support of the Experts.

Creating Chair for Comparative study of Dravidian Languages and Literature with

the support of the Experts.

Creating Chair for Comparative study of World Classical Language and Literature

may be carried out with the support of Experts.

Achievements

Students’ strength is increasing steadily every year.

Every year many students pass the Competitive Examinations like UPSC, TNPSC

Group I, II, IV, NET, JRFAL, SET etc.,

More than 60 Research Scholars pursued their Ph.D., and M.Phil., programmes

and presently 35 Research Scholars are pursuing Ph.D., and M. Phil Programmes.

50 and above students are studying EDC (IAS, Paper I Tamil), Nearly 300

students are studying in Part I, 45 students in M.A., Tamil.

International students were enlightened during their visit to the department.

Many students got Endowment Fellowship and UGC JRF Fellowships.

Many Seminars, Workshops, Symposiums, Conferences, Orientation and

Refresher Courses were organized for the benefit of students and staff members

at State, National and International levels.

Wednesday Circle’ Seminar is conducted every week. Students and staff

members present their papers and selected papers are published.

Students participate in club activities do Social Service and Donate Blood.

Variety of Elective Courses are offered by the Department so that students from

other majors are also benefitted.
