Principal’s Message
Hi families,
Once again, it has been a busy couple of weeks at Hymba Yumba. We have been focusing on a
designated timeframe during lunch breaks for jarjums to sit together and eat their lunch before
play. Our aim is to ensure our jarjums are taking the time to refuel before heading back to
class. We have also been encouraging our jarjums to bring their hats to school. Can I please
ask families to write their jarjum’s name on their hats so if they go missing we will find their
owners. In addition, Miss Connie has a large assortment of clothing in the Lost Property Box.
Please encourage your jarjums to come and check if they own any items.
Finally, I would like to thank families for their support in ensuring that there are no jarjums at
school before 8am.
Warm regards,
Michelle Campbell

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day at Hymba Yumba
We were all very excited to celebrate National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day at
Hymba Yumba Community Hub on Friday 11th August. We had Indigenous games, arts and crafts, kite
flying, boomerang painting, stalls, Torres Strait Islander drumming and dancing and heaps more.

National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children’s Day celebrations.
SPORT
Interschool Sport: For the last three weeks, jarjums in year 4, 5 and 6 have participated in interschool sports playing AFL. We nominated one girls’ team and one boys’ team. At the beginning of the days, jarjums were able to participate in clinics to sharpen their AFL skills. Each week both teams won some games and loss some games. They were able to play a variety of positions and were super competitive each week. At the end of the three weeks the boys finished 3rd and the girls finished 2nd out of all the teams. Well done to all that participated. We may have some future AFL stars in the making!
Bandji Program
The Bandji boys is our men’s group
consisting of boys year 7-12. The main
emphasis for the group is their
cultural, social and emotional
wellbeing. Traditional protocols and
practices are woven through every
fabric of the Bandji boy group. The
main focus of the group is leadership,
guidance and skills to enhance
student development. All bandji boys
are encouraged to participate in all
group activities.
Deadly Choices (healthy lifestyle),
Njaru Cultural Fitness
(strength/conditioning/health & well-
being), Headspace Inala (building confidence/social and emotional well-being), all will continue
providing information sessions to the Bandji Group this term.
Discussions have commenced with the Bundamba TAFE College to re-commence the 2nd Phase
of the Vocational Plans for the Bandji boys. This will involve field visits back to the Bundamba
TAFE College this term, to re-focus on individualised group career paths for the students.
Fundraising will recommence soon and the Bandji Boys have a Meat and Seafood Tray Voucher
each worth $150. Each voucher will be raffled off individually for two (2) weeks. Tickets will be
$2 each and $5 for three (3). The Bandji Boys would ask that when purchasing a ticket, that
your name and contact number be written on the stub of the ticket book, so that the potential
winner can be contacted and pick up their prize from the school.
Also, Father’s Day is coming up and the Bandji Boys have several Father Day items up for sale
such as: key rings, coasters, mouse pads, gift cards, picture frames, etc. The sale will be on
Friday 1st September, at the 1st and 2nd lunch breaks. All items for purchase will be $5 each.
During the last term school holidays three (3) of the Bandji Boys attended the Broncos training
day. The day involved a tour of the Broncos gym and training facilities, followed by training drills
on the Broncos training field. Light refreshments were supplied and the boys enjoyed the day.
The Bandji Boys would like to thank Sam from Deadly Choices, for including them in this activity.
The Bandji Boys Group would like to encourage any grandfathers, fathers, uncles or
predominant male figures in the boy’s life’s, to participate in the Bandji Boys Group.
